There's one significant problem with your argument, csim: A single Parent and their child is recognized by the government. A single, heterosexual, Parent or individual may get legally married and be recognized by the government. HOWEVER, a single homosexual individual may NOT be legally married and therefore would not be recognized. Even unmarried heterosexual couples may get married to be recognized. So your argument is missing some valuable facts to back it up. Even if Guest WANTED to marry his partner, because of bigotry and ignorant hatemongering guttertrash in the government, he can't marry his partner. Can that single mom (or dad) marry their heterosexual partner legally? Andrew

There are quite a few "unfair" situations out there, but you never hear about them. Single moms? Uneducated kids? Yet, this guy who is making 6 figures at the State Dept. quits and I am supposed to be upset? No, I am not. More people die of MRSA infections each year than die of AIDS, yet what do you hear about all the time? Don't ignore AIDS, just give important matters their fair time. This guy's choice to quit is not important. It is just another example of media political correctness expecting me to be upset about a matter that is personal to that one person, not public to us all. Who would be upset if I choose to be a Methodist rather than a Lutheran? No one. It is my choice. It is not everyone's concern. We are a bored nation that thrives on watching other people rather than making it happen in our own lives. We judge others in a manner we would not like used on ourselves. I am supposed to care about this guy? No, I do not. I prefer to do the things I need to and should do, rather than living vicariously through someone else. Grow up America. Amercia is almost 250 years old and we act like we are children. Everyone of us expects, demands, our gov't take care of us. Sounds like a 2 yr old and its Mommy. Have a "rich uncle" fix everything for you and suddenly everything is a good choice. Live with your choices and you realize there are bad choices and good choices.

Why would any gay person want to work for a group of right-wing, fundamentalist zealots like the Bush regime? And if they so chose, why would they expect their basic human rights to be honored by a group of thugs who haven't shown any hesitation to lie, deceive, torture and murder?

A man has do do all he can to effect changes for the better. If all efforts are stonewalled, what choice does that leave him? Good luck in the private sector, I am sure you will do well.

If your gay don't join the State Dept. pretty damned simple as I see it. If they wanted to keep you they would have made the changes nessassary. Either you don't play well on the negotiating table or your a liablitiy. Either way in some way the Gov thinks you're a weak link. Maybe they are right maybe they aren't. Try the private sector I hear they get paid well to catch bullets and negotiate rediculus contracts.. Halliburton?

sure thing deansmith, that is, IF the doublmint twins CONSENT, which I highly doubt.
But then, there was the couple of 74 year old sisters who seemed to be looking for a man in one o fhte double-mint commercials, maybe they would have you, but I somehow doubt that as well.

Trying to compare Michael Guest's problem to someone...below...talking about marrying the double-mint twins is an example of stupidity when one cannot place a clever veil over discrimination. When this country recognizes gay marriage as a human rights issue and not a religious sanctity, then these problems will cease to exist. Get Over It, America is the name of one of my new books. Look for it in the Fall. E.M. Albano

All I want is whatever the gays get. If boys can marry boys, then I should be able to marry the double-mint twins. And you bet I want benefits for both of them. And a tax right-off for both as well. And given a little time I can come up with all the other "equal" things you "owe" ME, ME, ME !!!

That's situation show that, just like the fact that discrimination against gays at work by firing them is permetted in 30 states how much, this country is going in the wong direction urder the ritgh-wing rebublican leadership. Let's all *** out those religious extremists who encourage discrimanation for years by theirs politics out of our goverment by electing a democrat goverment. Who''s the best person to solve this issue and bring justice, respect and equality for all gays and lesbiens in america as they deserved for long. The awser is Hillary Clinton ! Vote Hillary Clinton in 2008

The irony here is that it is extremely likely that Secretary Rice is a ***.

I give Mr. Guest my repect and best wishes. Our country boasts tolerance and equality and yet sometimes these blessings are discouraged Open up another door for yourself and your partner and enjoy...PEACE

I give mr.guest my respect and best wishes This country of ours boasts tolerance and equality. it would be nice if we could find these freedoms when we need them the most.

Secreatry Rice should be deeply ashamed. As a supposedly religious woman she has chosen to deny equal workplace rights to all Americans in the foreighn service. As an African-American woman, she should know even more than most the pain of discrimination and the tiring struggle it takes to overcome it. Gays and lesbians face such obstacles daily. Where is the fairness, decency and "Christian love" of Secretary Rice and the Bush Administration? Nowhere. January 20, 2009 cannot come soon enough.

The bit alluding to the family pet is treated better with apparently more respect than the same sex partner and the comment about free travel not allowed reeks of somehow its a "right" to have these perks applied equally???...
