To pinkpanther: you are saying that a technological attack from China or a destablized Russian nuclear arsernal should be of no concern, Instead you point out that Bush is the real threat. It is obvious you are not AMERICAN. You know nothing of our missle defense sytems. We actually have moving defense systems. Believe me when I tell you we can shoot down anything the enemy has to offer. We as Americans will not be caught with our guards down again, ;you should give Bush some credit. There has not been one attack on the U.S. since 9/11. AWARENESS has a lot to do with that fact. Ask India about Bush.

Then explain our fear of Iran if nothing they have or could get could come close to our soil?? which is true but we still fear-why. gimmi a reason why should the USA bleed for the strongest country in the region nuclear at that!

      • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:40:38 PM

Perhaps because Iran is one of the countries that calls for the destruction of the U.S. and the western way of life, erasing Israel from the face of the earth, and setting up a global caliphate to usher in the13th Imam. Which, if they got their way, you wouldn't be allowed the right of free speech that you so freely exercise here now.

Yeah there haven't been any attacks on America after September 11.... but what attacks happened to America BEFORE September 11 ???

      • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:38:41 PM

Perhaps you're forgetting the attacks on the world trade center of '93? How about the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole? The Marine barracks in Lebanon? The Achille Laurel? Should I go on, or are you starting to see a pattern of Americans being attacked by Islamic fundamentalists yet?

  • Posted By: mecory @ 12/14/2007 10:08:29 AM

The posts from conservatives... are to be expected. It's the same blind-sited narrow minded, refuse to accept that America IS NOT the only country out there attitude that is crippling our nation. If you have been to China, then you know the global attitude towards America is brewing with hate and disgust... which WILL come back to bite us in our.... We need to realize that we can't just ride into every country on a horse with our cowboy boots and guns and say "settle down ...the laws here now" in a Texas accent (as every little cowboy fantasizes about). We need to realize that our actions affect the entire world and start taking that into consideration. It is only a matter of time before Asia, the EU, or the rest of the world come back and put America in its place and say... NO you're NOT going war... and be strong enough to actually stand by its remarks.

And as for global warming.... I was very sad to see that that ignorant remark was made today. It's a comment I expected to see made about 10 years ago... but then again that???s a conservative for you. How can ANYONE refuse to acknowledge global warming and make a joke of it!? Or do you prefer just to ignore the already disastrous effects like Katrina, the animals endangered because lack of food from warmer waters, the towns destroyed from tsunamis, and the melting of ice around the world that is ruining habitats for cold and warm weathered animals? All of this is just a knock on the door from global warming and all conservatives want to do is act like no ones home. Well guess what.. global warming isn't going to wait.

Hopefully America can repair its tainted image and actually come together with other nations (they really do want to help us!!) instead of being stubbornly ignorant and refusing to adapt to the new world. You know what happens to a species that doesn???t adapt? ???.. It dies out.

    • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:34:53 PM

Conservatives don't deny global warming, what we deny is that it is man made. There is more than enough evidence from dissenting scientist to show that there have been periods of warming and cooling throughout history, and that these periods of warming just happen to coincide with periods of increased activity on the sun. You know, that giant orange ball in the sky that provides warmth to the Earth.

This article is the biggest waste of cyberspace I've ever seen. All America has done over the last one hundred years is protect and save the "WORLD." If that can be compared to a "caged animal" then so be it. Let me see, Iraqis now have FREEDOM, Muslims are not being exterminated in Croatia, and the Somalis aren't starving in Somalia (at least when the Americans were there). South Korea can call itself a country because Americans are on the 38th parallel. I could go on and on but why bother. I don't see how what we have done and are doing in the world is synonymous with being afraid. "I would rather you just Thank You and went on your way."

    • Posted By: nycanon @ 12/14/2007 11:46:04 AM

The World wonders why America is not saving 'Darfur' and realizes the lack of oil. The World opens up History books and concludes that most conflicts America was involved in was in Americas best interests while being sold as 'saviors' in the media and to the UN. You can care less what the World thinks, but don't expect Thank-You for being hypocritical.

      • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:29:50 PM

The U.S. does not have the resources to solve every conflict in the world. But when U.S. interests are at stake, then yes, we must do what we can to protect those interests. As soon as you can come up with a society that doesn't run on oil, then you can criticize the U.S. for protecting its interests in the mid east.

I take issue with the point that it is not Dubya's fault because he has contributed to it with his "My way or the HIghway" atitude to the rest of the world. He is like a spoiled child who likes those who agree with him but when others disagree then it is alway he who is right and everyone else is wrong. Invading Afghanistan was right, invading Iraq was wrong. If he is such a tough guy and strong leader, why did he purse the weakest link by a long shot in his Axis of Evil? Anyone could have taken out a 4th rate dictator like Saddam. He lied about WMD, he suppports torture while criticizing others for doing similar things because he chooses to define what he does as intelligence gathering. No one likes a hypocrite. Now the Repub candidates are running as Dubya clones, all trying to outdo the others with their religiousity while saying nothing about real issues like hunger in the US, medical insurance costs, the environment, and ending the war. there well may have been a reputation problem for the US in the world pre Dubya but he has exacerbated it several times over in the last 7 years. We can only hope for a change come 11-08.

      • Posted By: nycanon @ 12/14/2007 11:58:40 AM

I can just picture Bush at the War-Crime Tribunal in the future 'I am not a crook'.
Meanwhile Gore won the Nobel Peace prize. The Conservatives should be out defaming the Liberal Swedish Nobel committee very soon.

        • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:28:18 PM

If you'll notice, he won the peace prize, not anything that has to do with science. And Bush will never be at a war crimes tribunal, because he followed the rules, went to congress, and was granted authority to invade Iraq. Those would claim this is an "illegal" war are really just showing how little they understand the constitution.

IF WE CONSIDER OBJECTIVELY THE HISTORY OF EMPIRES, AND THE U.S.A. IS AN EMPIRE, THERE'S ONE COMMON THREAD THAT BINDS THEM AND IT'S NOT THAT THEY ALL DOMINATED THE GLOBE MILITARILY , ECONOMICALLY AND SUCH, BUT IT'S THAT THEY ALL MET THEIR DEMISE AS A RESULT OF THE ARROGANCE, THE DISREGARD AND THE IMPUNITY EMPIRES BEGIN TO OPERATE WITH.
AS SCARY AS IT IS, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF "DUBBYA" U.S.A. HAS DEMONSTRATED THESE TRAITS MORE THAN EVER. EVEN TOWARDS IT OWN CITIZENS, NATURAL BORN AMERICAN, UNDER THE DISGUISE OF PROTECTION HAS BEEN SUBJUGATED TO THE "PATRIOT ACT" AN ACT THAT IS IN DIRECT CONFLICT WITH SOME OF OUR MOST BASIC RIGHTS AND MOST REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS AS NATURAL BORN CITIZENS.
IN THE LAST 7 YEARS WE HAVE MANAGED TO DESIMATE PRACTICALLY EVERY MEANINGFUL FOREIGN RELATIONSHIP WE'VE SPENT THE LAST DECADE FOREGING. "AMERICA NEEDS TO REFOCUS HER FOREIGN POLICY" NOW THOSE ARE THE TRUEST WORDS I'VE HEARD TODAY

      your right on the mark

      • Posted By: dweiskir @ 12/15/2007 5:24:24 PM

You're missing one of the major elements of an empire; they exist to expand, i.e The Roman Empire, the British Empire. The United States does not gobble up nations into an Empire. The United States, when it invades, pumps billions of dollars into a country to help it improve itself, set up its own government, and rule itself. If the U.S. were an Empire, there wouldn't be an EU, there would be U.S. territories in Europe, and the same goes for Japan. The U.S. still has a presence in these countries, but it is not in control of these countries. We help to defend them from the same aggressors who seek to destroy not just the U.S. but all western ways of life. This is not America being scared, as the author of this article would like us to believe. This is recognizing a threat and taking the proper steps to mitigate the risk from that threat.

Pink panther your comment make no sense. It is like you a writing just for writing sake. Is it because I caught lying about your military experience, or is it because you think people are stupid. I always tell people if you can't prove what you say you are in trouble. YOu have no experience in missle defense systems or the military. You porbablly went to bootcamp where everyone just STUMPED ON YOU like and empty pepsi can.

  • Posted By: umarpathan @ 12/15/2007 7:15:37 AM

Thats true no body is hating American people or America but its the bush admiinstartion and its foriegn policy playing havoc with millions of people lives and making the world a dangerous place to live.

  • Posted By: PerryM @ 12/15/2007 5:18:02 AM

Who the hell cares what the rest of the world thinks of us ??? I sure don???t. Most of the world is enslaved by two-bit dictators or immoral political systems and if we are a stick in the eye to them so much the better. Bush is not the reason others hate us; it???s our freedom that they envy and that frustration foments hatred towards the super power that makes their very existence stone-aged. The author is a typical weenie liberal who whines and moans about not being liked ??? screw the rest of the world when it comes to our defense. The solution to getting folks to like us more is to export more freedom/capitalism to the rest of the world. That's why many folks die trying to get here - they really love what we have.

Is the left really right ? Let us think about this fear. The possibility that the terrorists could come to our country post 9/11 from an appeased President and Congresswould certainly have brought another attack at some point in time, (study in history of other attacks). They could have takesn our complacence as a sign of weakness. They could have secertly come into our country by the thousands with lots of weapons. They could have waited and planned another attack, say in New York City. Possibility beginning at some of those liberal media centers where the offices of say, The New York Times, or Newsweek are located. Oh but wait, they would be smart enough not to attack anyone on their side of the issues, wouldn't they. Let's see, Washington D.C., now there is a place where they could find enemies and friends. As long as they were Killing the Republicans, they could find save haven with the Democrats and get lots of information. Oh well, I could never imagine that terrorists would ever attack us more than ONCE. Can You? No Nation on earth will ever have a media as bad as ours.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/14/2007 5:05:43 PM

you post so well, now we all know -why was Bush elected a second time! Bush has had [had] friendly relations with Bin-Lauden for over 25 years, but you are correct about our media they truly prove everyone has a price. They HAVE BEEN comming into our country from the late 70s-89+ and haven't we seen enough school killing with AK-47s to figure we are also the black markets favorit shopping store! As there is nothing you can't find on any given American street corner. Frankly im glad gangs and mobs have not formed one group, and took power, there are enough of them well armed, The Russians are close to there own goal, to build a nuke inside our borders, to blackmail this country to sell there products, and protection. Greed still is the gasoline of the world. If you need to prove GOP dominance your in the wrong place, as we did not even invade the right country who took out the WTC, the Saudis! Bush had Iraq in action, prior, to 9/11, to start a war,,jump start our economy, [only works when NOT outsourced] and all because of Enron and Worldcom! As a sitting President cannot be tried for civilian crimes during a time of war-on an adjective, which describes a fighting tactic not a way of life! Today it does not even include the KKK or any gang and if they ain't terrorist, then there is no description for them. In 7 years a Democrate cannot be a Christian? A Democrate is yellow. Democrates offer a safe haven? So when did the GOP find Bin-Lauden?

  • Posted By: LibsHaveNoBalls @ 12/14/2007 2:50:49 PM

America in fear? Are you kidding me? If we are afraid - then who is intimidating us? If our leaders have to scare us into recognizing the dangers, can you blame them? We certainly won't be able to read about it in trash periodicals like Newsweek. You're too busy attacking conservatives, Bush, and America to give us REAL JOURNALISM. Yet more America-bashing by Newsweek and America-hater himself, Fareed Zakaria. It's total garbage, but enjoyable to read because it does give insight to how 'the other half' thinks. But rest assured, this is how our enemy portrays us. Yes, American wrote the document that changed the world on 7/4/1776, liberated the slaves, gave women the right to vote, liberated Europe TWICE, freed 50 million Muslims, while defeating Fascism, Communism, and (go ahead and include) Islamo-fascism into the mix - but Mr. Fareed Zakaria would never know it. I guess that's just window dressing to this idiot.

so nice to see someone completly forget what Clinton did in 96, saved our arss while walking into Iraq with his actions which were not done to protect us while invading but did none the less!

  • Posted By: ArmandoG @ 12/14/2007 9:45:20 AM

Yet again surprised by Newsweek's endless run to the hills mentality. Americans are not afraid of the new world, Americans are concerned about 10 million suicidal muslims. 9/11 WAS NOT the equivalent of gas station robbery. It was planned and plotted for years. Every federal agency failed us, two administrations over looked the gun aimed at our heads and 3000 people were murdered. I am frankly shocked at how many of you refuse to admit that there are serial killers for a religion living amongst us - just because you can't get over the fact the Gore LOST.

Sr. armed, trained and funded Lauden, the USMC,CIA,SAS,IMI funded trained armed Frankenstein, as Lauden was refered to during this same time, as he and his people traveled freely to and from the USA in the late 70 to late 80s!!! The strategy of most Conservative these days is to blindly support all proposals from Republicans and oppose all proposals by the Democrats. Anaylzing any proposal on merit is dead. If tomorrow Bush admits to significant Global warming, conservatives will change their mind too. In that sense, Liberals are a lot more 'free' to think for themselves.

    • Posted By: ArmandoG @ 12/14/2007 9:52:20 AM

Well show me one good proposal from a democrat, wait Lieberman has alot why don't you help him out

      • Posted By: nycanon @ 12/14/2007 9:58:41 AM

Plenty related to Education, Taxes, Healthcare and Environment. Conservatives today have stopped thinking on their own and blindly repeat what they are suppose to.

          • Posted By: nycanon @ 12/14/2007 10:13:31 AM

My guess is, like most Conservatives you will wait for the GOP response to any proposal that will trickel down to Cable news and talk radio before you form your 'OWN' response. Now if you want specific poposals then do some research, there are plenty of them, or you want me to spoon feed you that too.

            • Posted By: ArmandoG @ 12/14/2007 2:39:58 PM

You can't name one or else you would have already and if your such a fan of "research" then how can you claim the dems have any good ideas. Because "research" would have shown you the folly of that statement - wait do you read the NY Times?

To those who think Hillary or Obama will be America's savior, I have news for you. Obama has nill foreign policy experience. Living overseas during his childhood does not equip him with the knowledge necessary to deal with the world, regardless of many times he says it. And Hillary, well I don't have enough time remaining in my life to inform you of how bad she HAS BEEN or would CONTINUE TO BE bad for America. For starters, Americans seem to have short memories. It was her philandering husband who all but handed over nuclear secrets from Los Alamos to the Chinese. Short of gift wrap, his minions handed over secrets that will only help propel (no pun intended) Chinese ballistic missile technology for years to come. Sandy Berger's theft from the National Archives of secret documents around the time the 9/11 commission was investigating is a bit of a concern. And this may be trivial to some, but doesn't anyone remember when the first Clinton administration left the White House, only to remove (read 'STEAL') all of the furniture and paintings, and spray painted the walls like an Arkansas trailer? No? Don't remember that? What short memories Americans have. Well, I didn't forget and I'm hopeful at least 51% of all voting Americans remember come Nov. 2008.

"Thus global capitalism is producing its own well-funded anticapitalists. Environmental degradation proceeds in much of the world on a colossal scale. And these problems get exacerbated by changes in climate, rainfall and habitation. Scarcities of water and wheat and other grains might turn out to be the fault lines of the future as populations move in search of secure and arable land."

It seems as if the author's real objection is not fear itself, but rather the object of that fear? Hmmmm...seems that fear mongering cuts both ways, now doesn't it?
