"Thus global capitalism is producing its own well-funded anticapitalists. Environmental degradation proceeds in much of the world on a colossal scale. And these problems get exacerbated by changes in climate, rainfall and habitation. Scarcities of water and wheat and other grains might turn out to be the fault lines of the future as populations move in search of secure and arable land."

It appears as if the author's objection is not to fear itself, but rather to its object? Hmmm...seems fear mongering cuts both ways, now, doesn't it?

Zakaria is a pure internationalist. For these people America is the keel that keeps the world from capsizing, and it is nothing more than that. If real free trade does not exist except within the borders of the US, that???s fine, pretend it does anyway. For Fareed and his kind America is the engine that runs the world and they will write anything, say anything to keep that engine running, no matter how ruinous becomes the yearly trade deficit. I thought his article merely another left-wing screed until I got to the part where he thinks China may one day take up the ???mantle??? of world leadership; then, I began to wonder how many more Zaharias there are out there.

This conservative long-time Republican thinks Mr. Zakaria has written an 'right on the mark' (thanks pinkpanther) commentary. i don't agree with everything, even don't like some of it. But in the full analysis it sure it sure rings true and clearly presents a picture of the present, and future trends, that we Americans really need to incorporate into our strategic planning. If one "follows the money", it leads to China... India... and South America. In 30 years that is where a large increase in human activity will be taking place. America needs to be positioned to be a part of that, and provide leadership by example.

the remark "right on" did not refere to the author, and GOP im not, but as you said some of what the writter of the comment i responded to said has some weight. i could care less as long as we start to care for ourselves, so we can once again lead the world by example, not my way or the highway

Zakaria's perspective is that of an internationalist. For these people America is about being the keel that keeps the world from capsizing and it is not much more than that. These people will write anything, say anything to keep that Globalist ball rolling, no matter how much the American people have to pay for it. And pay for they do with an internationalist trading system that is increasingly staked against them. Does it matter to people like Zakaria that 'free' trade exists only within the borders of the United States? I thought his article just another left-wing screed until I got to the part where he envisions the Chicoms as one day taking up the "mantle" of world leadership from the US. Then, I began to wonder how many more Fareed's there are in the US.

The current admistration has made its share of mistakes but pursuing and attempting to eliminate fundamental terrorists is the right call...check out www.obsessionthemovie.com and you decide! The liberal minds can't seem to get their brains around the fact that the terrorists simply want us to convert to their brand of faith or die.

I don't think I have ever read a more biased news report in my whole life. Americans are completely wrong to feel afraid after 9/11, tainted toys, the rise of dictators like chavez et. al. Republicans are the ones making us fear? Not the people who blew up the world trade center nope, its those crazy republicans......And then to portray the democrats as too scared to stand up the mean rotton scaremongering republicans. Right, hillary, ted kennedy and charlie rangel are all quaking in their boots. Is this author KIDDING ME????? And then there are those sweet innocent other countries just trying to get out from under the imperialist rule of the big bad US. Ack. I can't believe this magazine allowed this article in it.....

Chaves is a twice democraticaly elected head of state, not a dictator, unless your lumping in {a none aggressive militarly country} with Bush a twice democratly elected head of state type dicktator

IF WE LOOK BACK OBJECTIVELY AT THE HISTORY OF EMPIRES, AND THE U.S.A. IS AN EMPIRE, THERE IS ONE COMMON THREAD THAT BINDS THEM TOGETHER AND IT'S NOT THAT THEY ALL DOMINATED THE GLOBE MILITARILY, ECONOMICALLY AND SUCH, BUT IT'S THAT THEY ALL MET THEIR DEMISE AS A RESULT OF THE ARROGANCE, THE DISREGARD AND THE IMPUNITY EMPIRES BEGIN TO OPERATE WITH.
AS SCARY AS IT IS, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF "DUBBYA" THESE TRAITS HAVE BECOME MORE APPARENT THAN EVER BEFORE WITH THE U.S.A... EVEN TO THE POINT WHERE THE VERY RIGHTS GRANTED TO THE (NATURAL BORN) CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY THROUGH THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE ARE BEING COMPROMISED (PATRIOT ACT).IN THE LAST 7 YEARS WE HAVE DESIMATED PRACTICALLY EVERY MEANINGFUL FOREIGN RELATIONSHIP WE'VE SPENT THE LAST DECADE BUILDING "AMERICA NEEDS TO REFOCUS IT'S FOREIGN POLICY" THE TRUEST WORDS I'VE HEARD TODAY.

The herd narratives from pundits like Zareed Zakaria that portray America's leadership as ascending or receding once again find themselves lagging behind events. President Bush and the American GI are ascending in the world, but the clique keep clicking yesterdays news. Having been burned from their qualified support of the Clintons' and Bush's war against Iraq, now they must stubbornly adhere to cheap-shotting Bush, while pretending to be taking the world view. The American GI's role in the Middle East will prove to be a truly progressive microcosm of how peace and prosperity can be achieved through the elimination of tyranny and terror, but Mr. Zakaria will have to wet his finger some more before he feels that wind blowing right under his nose.

    Breaking Story:

    Conflict in the Middle East.
    Going badly for the Palestinians.
Islamic militants without armies resort to terrorist tactics to fight on.
They strike America for favoring the Israelies with economic benefits and military hardware.
    9/11.
Zionists in America use 9/11 to put America on a path to eliminate the threat to Israel by military force.
The use of overwhelming military force against an Islamic nation state exascerbates the problem.
Discover that the problem is ideological and has no national identity nor any international boundaries.
Civilian casualties and collateral damage win terrorists new friends.
We have in fact gone as far as fear can carry us.
Now we must rely upon methods intended to heal and restore and reconstruct the social positives.
And we must redeploy political power in America to favor those who truly put America first.

Fear saves a man,is a wellknown saying. Those who fear not, progress not.But it is a fear of different kind ,not discussed by Mr.Zakriya.It is fear of loosing the dominance all over the world not the fear of becoming poor. Moreover no progress in any field of life is piossible without competition or animosity. Those who don,t have an enemy or its fear can not prepare themselves for the future ventures. So what is being popularized is correct and eye opener for the nation.

You could not have served in the American Army. That is very obvious pinkpanther

I served six years in the Army National Guard in an infantry unit so I am a trained killer ( somewhat tongue in cheek. ) You remind me of a guy who returned from Nam (another famous flop) who was extremely proud of the 7 gooks he killed and who would carry on for hours when drunk about how those of us who had never killed anyone were somehow lacking. Just wearing a uniform does not give you a great insight to the wrold's problems nor does not wearing uniform limit your view.

The world is a big allegory to evangelicals. The devil and hell have been replaced with despots (devil) we must overthrow and mushroom clouds (hell) we must avoid. The constitutiion is their bible and founding fathers are the apostles. Bush is god I guess.

  • Posted By: Corkyfoiles @ 12/14/2007 11:29:31 AM

The us is led by evangelical movement in country who have converted our constitution into some kind of bible, our finding fathers into apostles, and our military into missionaries who spread democracy around the world--places where there is the most resources. They lead by fear--not of the devil and hell, but of despots and mushroom clouds. These people think the world is a great big allegory. We need to get rid of them.

  • Posted By: Corkyfoiles @ 12/14/2007 11:27:12 AM

America has taken on the evangelical mindset because we have so many evangelicals in power now. They think we need to be "missionaries" to the rest of the world --spreading "democracy" . Nevermind that we only want to target our missionary soldiers on those countries that have the most resources that we need.

It is ironic the richest and most powerful country in the world spends billions of dollars fighting wars which they will win by military might only, not ideologically. In the hearts and minds of people all across the world, America has become a symbol of fear; a fear sparked by local inhibition to protect their natural resources from foreign exploitation. All Bush has to do is send two destroyer ships to any of the non-major power and alas, it's an invasion. If Bush can do it once in Iraq, what's to stop him from doing it again? He still has another whole year in office...who knows what he is capable of?

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/14/2007 11:25:43 AM

your right there. just like any peace talks in the middle-east, two men can agree, but it does not mean the people will. We are lost, and need to lead by example not fear, and we will have a larger impact by example, than fear!

  • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/14/2007 10:49:39 AM

I served from early 79 escorted 79 hostages from Iran and then turned around and traind armed and funded the mujahideen and 100,000others with the S.A.S. I.M.I. and C.I.A till 83 when i bagged and tagged 241 Marines in Beruit and don't ever tell me im Army, its not safe to mess with a messed up mind or would feel good if you shok Bin-Laudens hand in the early 80s to have him do to us what he did don't ever question my intell or service. The missle system i reply to, is the same they have tried on many occations to hit the target in 2000, when it hit zip! It may work now but as long as parts read "Made in China" how could one say it will work in any battle to come and currently its all made somewhere else or the 2 billion we spend a day would come back to the American economy and alas it don't!!! I only use the word EX cause if it should be needed i will not follow anyones rules of engagement to get them out from my country!!! No rules just plain fun!

The old saying, "clean up your own backyard first" hits the mark. We could bring ALL of our troops home, close all bases outside the USA and stop expanding the war machine and giving Billions to "Allies". We could then put all of our efforts (and money) into our country's improvement instead of trying to "fix" everyone elses issues. Notice how we rallied together as a country to "defend" ourselves from terror, let's try rallying together to be a country people across the globe will respect and admire not a country to be affraid of.

well put also we do need to get back to our core LEAD BY EXAMPLE NOT BY THREAT
