Ron Paul is the ONLY candidatem, Republican or Democrat, who is not fearmongering and tells Americans that we don't have to be fearful of a nuclear Iran. Why do you continue to ignore him??

lets just understand that in amerika conservative means reactionary and liberal means progressive..reactionaries like fascism, control , returning to hte past, and fear, progressives like change, inclusion and trying new things.. As long as congress has enough republican reactionaries to overturn every proposal put forth by the dems to try to address the new problems of emerging markets and global warming caused by our own greed and consumptive intransigent, and belligerent behavior behavior.. we are on the losing side of history. and we will not retain our power but instead we will become( as we already are) like every other reactionary and fascist empire that ever existed, we will collapse from within..Time to leave here if we cant vote these reactionaries out of office.

You no nothing about missle defence. You are talking about missle defense systems of the 1960's. Our missle defence is not just NORAD Our missle defense systems are far more sophisticated now than they were ten years ago. How long ago did you serve in the army. I question that you are an ex-marine. You could have proved that you had knowledge in missle defense systems without mentioning you were an ex-marine. Even the fact that you used the word ex-marine, sounds fishy to me.

WHY are we scared? EASY "How do we rule the world on our buck, while trying to make it, seem, like your just running your own country, to it's own people" not an easy task but GW pulled it off , and as long as we interfere Iraq will only be the first of many attempted invasions.

INDIANS from INDIA have thrived under the BUSH ADMINISTRATION. They have gone from third world(which they still are) to a first "world-like" nation. Many peasants have moved up to middle class status. INDIANS in CANADA are doing very well I hear AH. INDIANS in America have been dominating the technology sector and have invested heavily in INDIAN Companies throughout the world. Today much of our customer service jobs are handled by the INDIANS. Considering this is not their first language, I think they should be applauded. Having a democratic President like Edwards who would probablly reduce outsourcing jobs to India especially in the technology field, would cause the Indian government to lose billions. In order for India to become a First-World nation they must do away with their caste system. A lot of brilliant Indians in India never get to realize the American dream like Fareed Zakaria. They instead are stuck in a life of poverty. If you study the Indian culture you will notice the light skined Indians usually discriminate against dark skinned Indians. The light skinned Indians own the technology companies in Virginia and the dark skinned Indians own the seven elevens. Just as America has gone through it's civil rights stuggle, so must India. It is wrong that someone is destined to poverty because of their caste. Indian-Pakistan relations have cooled since Bush has been in power. WHY? FEAR. They never feared the Clinton regime and in the 1990's these two countries were on the brink of full out nuclear war.

To eddiewhere: Give Bush credit? Yes, credit for wrong direction. Remember, 9/11 attack came when Bush was in charge. Only after the disaster, Bush paid some attention. I wouldn't give too mush credit for that. Almost anybody can do job like that. Even eddiewhere might be able to do it.

The media puts fear in the minds of people......Fear of global warming, fear of the bird flu, fear of terrorists also, fear of economy, fear of US dollar, fear of Muslims, fear of oil crisis, should I go on???????

  • Posted By: connieo500 @ 12/14/2007 10:16:04 AM

The media and no other source has brought us to this point of fear. Fear of the bird flu, fear of global warming, fear this, fear that. I've quit taking anything seriously from any source. Thank you very much.

  • Posted By: rcglad @ 12/14/2007 9:35:50 AM

If you want to have a real discussion on about the spreading of fear, Mr. Zakaria, you might include your own magazine and the media as a whole. The media thrives by selling negative, fear laden stories. Scandal, shock, war, economic dislocation is what you're all about. How many cover stories about global warming has your magazine run over the years? How many stories about how China is overtaking the world? How many stories about the next big bio terror or nuclear terror threat. Newsweek of all media outlets can hardly complain that its readers are sometimes fearful when you so effectively peddle the sky is falling fear.

As a conservative, I don't fear the future. I've been to China and seen the widespread poverty. I don't fear China. I don't fear the terrorists, because I know my leaders aren't afraid to confront them even when the public at large grows weary of the fight. I'm not worried that we're running out of energy, because I know that our energy future is more about human ingenuity. Global warming? If I had a penny for time someone claimed the world was coming to an end, well, I think you know the rest....

Here we go again -- it's the media's fault. Why can't the media just report happy news?

      • Posted By: ArmandoG @ 12/14/2007 9:55:35 AM

Well answer your question. Why can't they? I get it your still in "Intellectually Dishonest" mode. But if Hillary or Obama get elected I guarantee they will implement the exact same policies regarding terrorism that Bush has, because they work. Frauds your all frauds.

To pinkpanther: you are saying that a technological attack from China or a destablized Russian nuclear arsernal should be of no concern, Instead you point out that Bush is the real threat. It is obvious you are not AMERICAN. You know nothing of our missle defense sytems. We actually have moving defense systems. Believe me when I tell you we can shoot down anything the enemy has to offer. We as Americans will not be caught with our guards down again, ;you should give Bush some credit. There has not been one attack on the U.S. since 9/11. AWARENESS has a lot to do with that fact. Ask India about Bush.

Stopandthink: I wish to heck we still had traditional live-and-let-live conservatives: from Iraq to Guantanamo to immigration, today's Republican leaders are almost all appealing to fear, ignorance, and stereotyping of the whole rest of the world. The casual, happy discussion of torture and reliance on war at the drop of a hat would be horrifying to most traditional philosophical conservatives, and is un-American in the deepest sense: people around the world look at us and think we've lost our minds. (And they're right.)

Where among the Republican candidates do you see anything like a real strategy for helping America to be viewed as the positive force it was for generations? Who is saying anything that could actually lead us to a "safe and peaceful world" in our lifetimes or those of our children? Where in the Republican base do you see an interest in such a strategy? We've lost something precious and irreplaceable, and today's Republican party seems to think that it either doesn't matter (who cares what the world thinks, we can and should do exactly what we want, no matter what) or can be fixed by just hiring the right public relations person. (With Karen Hughes gone, we've just picked James Glassman to represent us in the Islamic world -- the guy best known for writing that brilliant, prescient book "Dow 36,000.")

Zakaria has nailed it. He is one of our few really thoughtful press commentators. I find him both moderate and hopeful. A coalition built around his ideas could really help fix this country. Personally, I'm far less hopeful. With the dollar collapsing, nations worldwide losing billions because they invested in U.S. based debt, the U.S. military in shambles, and our respect in the world gone (watch the global warming meetings in Bali if you doubt it), America is on the verge of a major loss in power. It will affect all of us in our pocketbooks and it will be visible to even the most provincial. Given the level of ignorance in this country about what's going on in the world, we are in danger of an explosion in blame, nativism, and hatred in response. All you have to do is listen to Michael Savage, Lou Dobbs, et al, to see it coming. It will not be "liberals" who these folks' followers choose to elect. When powerful nations fall victim to fear, some very ugly things can happen.

It is very sad state of union. People like Rudy Giuliani, who is married 3 times and was doing sexual adventure while in the office, is a leading candidate for the President. And so called a leader of right wing christian movement, Pat Robertson, is endorsing the immoral, corrupt person like Giuliani.
    What a joke!

  • Posted By: commypinko @ 12/14/2007 9:29:36 AM

Wow, another great generalized article by those "impeccable" journalists at Newsweek. Please people, wake up. I wonder what special interest group or country this so called journalist is funded by. Oh yeah, forget the BILLIONS of dollars the U.S. Government gives in aid to so many other countries. Wasn't America just named the most generous country in the world? Sorry, I forgot, the thought-police at Newsweek say America is bad and afraid. It must be true. I live overseas and see the blatant corruption, poverty and lack of infrastructure that still plague many parts of this world. The difference is America is one of the last countries willing to sacrifice people, capital and time into helping other parts of the globe. The real cowards are those who expect America to be the world police and then turn around and lecture as if they know better. Just like Mr. Zakaria. Bravo.

  • Posted By: stopandthink @ 12/14/2007 8:57:57 AM

The author's obvious ignorance on Conservatives' stances is appalling. That is like a Conservative saying that all Liberals are Socialist and Communist sympathizers that would just prefer to surrender our boarders and give up sovereignty. We all want a safe, peaceful world. Bush isn???t the enemy and until highly unbalanced journalists begin to use their first amendment right with the responsibility that it deserves, we will continue to see a split in America and an indefinite distrust between the ideologies.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/14/2007 9:27:40 AM

That is like??? just as you ARE NOW as this is what we are being called by conservitives and Bush is way more unbalenced than this author along with the entire GOP and with view as yours and theres you bet we will divide i want this country run, not own the world on our buck and nuclear threat

  • Posted By: Sonoluma @ 12/14/2007 8:48:07 AM

Would it kill Newsweek to fill the pages with more words vs more ad's...the last page containing one paragraph is pathetic.

  • Posted By: owiz @ 12/14/2007 8:40:34 AM

George W. Bush did the right thing when it became necessary. Just when he was being inauguarated, something really bad happened. The terrorists struck! Even the most sane person would go mad and turn into a beast. I like Bush because he has continued to tore a principled line. As for the next Amrican President, it will be a tough time because opinions are not what shape reality. Reality and opinions of people are strange bedfellows. The media should not cheat us.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/14/2007 9:22:26 AM

but thats not to say the ONLY reason the WTC was hit was due to Bush so vote moronicaly if you wish Jeb will be running if you want another Bush killing our country as the First Bush ARMED THEM the Second Bush MAKES THEM RICK and the third will GIVE THEM THIS COUNTRY so vote Bush till the end of days cause if another gets into office the eand will come quick
