Zakaria is right, on many different levels. The politicians preach fear when we are the most powerful
country in the world. (Who has the most weapons of mass destruction?) We went to war in Iraq not
because of their threat to us but the threat they posed on the Saudi's border. The Saudi's who have
been such good allies to us and care takers of the world's largest oil deposits. Imagine those oil fields
in the hands of Saddam. WMD's were an excuse to take action. While thousands of jobs go to India
and China, we are suppose to quiver and fear because of a small group of terrorists. Yes they are
dangerous but is this a reason to divert our resourses and attention on such a grand scale? I think
a bigger threat is posed by the economies of India and China.

Let us not forget most of the terrorist who took out the WTC were Saudi!!! Not one country over there did not dance on that day, they the ones we die for and the Israeilis all danced they all danced and we bleed still!

I agree with this, we have a compulsory sensation that other countries sharing, if not taking power from the United States is to be feared and fought. This is, in some cases, with merit.

I believe that unless the European Union starts producing nationalized results, and other unions are created and do so as well we will be opening the door for outwardly oppressive nations to come into higher power.

I believe we fear China the most, as they have an interest in every first world nation (not to mention ours) and they are not evolving as other powers like the United States towards a more free and democratic nation. I fear that China is the new Rome, and they intend to force their goverment strategies elsewhere. It is with merit that we feel so threatened by non-democratic nations, as democracy is the standard by which we live and it has been a good standard for hundreds of years.

As an American I will say that it is no wonder that we fear and attempt to opress the outside world, as we all grew up knowing that we are the most powerful nation in the world. Given that fact, I feel that the problem lies with a gut reaction we have with being the "planetary police".

What we need to do is influence cultural changes that guide us to help change the world in peaceful and humanitarian ways. The only way to do this is to change our view from "most powerful" to "most influencial". We also need to realize that it is our responsibility to reach out worldwide in humanitarian efforts to effect change.

Adding to that, we also need to teach our people to hold a higher respect for the U.N., as they are the tie that binds us to many nations. I live in Utah, and we all of course know what Utah thinks about the United Nations. We are only so lucky to have a body of nations coming together to speak, and not legislate. The U.N. should take a primary view in American classrooms with stress given to the fact that they are our chance for a better, more culturally enhanced future.

Do you really believe, "China is the new Rome, and they intend to force their government strategies elsewhere." There is no evidence to support this comment. I don't see China doing much "nation building" around the world! I think we should do some self assessment before we go pointing fingers.

you got that right we need to look in the mirror as we have become what we left, to found this country, what i see i want i get britts, and ya the Roman empire, Khan, and the USA, conqueres, invaders and horrific.

I wonder if Zakaria was experiencing this "fear" he discribes when he supported using military force against Iraq.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/13/2007 8:04:22 PM

concidering we were ALL lied to most likely as Bush used fear to get our but into it . we ALL feared from a lie!

Zakaria is a bright man and advocate of free markets, globalization, and internationalism...I don't think he bought the false intelligence. It's seems he is just a verbal/emotional opportunist. By making negative assertions such as in the title of his article he creates a narrow view of his larger philosophy.

pinkpanther87413, I'm not sure what you are saying. Zakaria is from India and currently lives in New York...

The greatness tempered and burneshed in the core of Americans, rooted in culture will continue as in the past to provide true liberated leadership to the world through our savior Jesus Crist.

I consider myself an independent but in all honesty I lean heavily towards the left. I disagree w/ the Bush administration 100%. That said...I think your views are delusional. If you are trying to inform the "American" people, you should not say things like Americans are "acting like a caged animal".

    • Posted By: 2cents @ 12/13/2007 7:51:26 PM

He didn't say Americans are caged animals. He said that the rest of the world sees American foreign policy to be similar in action to that of a caged animal. That is why they fear us. They see Bush's policies for what they are - similar to a wounded dog. Our policies seem irrational, aggressive, counter productive, purely emotional, and lacking any logic or forethought.

        just profit

        • Posted By: newspeak123 @ 12/13/2007 8:32:19 PM

It seems a bit "irrational" to speak for the opinions of the rest of the world. It also seems a bit "aggressive and counter productive" to compare Americans to an animal in whatever fashion you do it. I disagree w/ the semantics and the connotations. I think his views are nullified because of the fact that he was a participating member of a group that produced a report for G.W. Bush regarding Middle East policies at the request of Paul Wolfowitz.

In your next assessment of foreign policy alternatives, please include the position taken by Republican Ron Paul and our founding fathers - that we should avoid unconstitutional preemptive war and entangling alliances with other nations.

Fareed Zakaia is mistaken. American isn't scared of the new world. It isn't a surprise that a person with the name of Fareed has written an article like this. So this is who speaks for America today. Zakaia. Zakaia sometimes I wonder if American hasn't already lost the World War On Terror because people like yourself have been place in a position to speak to the masses.

okaay, so we should not fear al qaeda or iran, but we should fear india and china? how about getting more specific? how is the rise of india, china, and some latin american and african countries hurting the US? and what are some specific things that the author suggest we do about it? what are the "new solutions" that this world needs? more regulations on raw materials and energy? more anti-communist rhetoric and a new cold war against china?

If we are not afraid: Why does Bush need pre-emptive strike authority at the drop of a dime or better yet for a thought? Because of ,maybe, they might,or because 2012 is in his life span?

You have just tip-toed around the words MIC - Military-Industrial Complex. Some of this "fear" can be attributed to the fact that many entities profit from this new world wide conflict. Moreover, US has not been indiscriminate in retaliation but has been more precise - Afghanistan, Somalia, Pakistan are perfect examples of this. Lastly , NDTV of India is a Hinduism-baiting mouthpiece of India's Communists. Your articles rarely reveal something new, they just summarize various popular view points. Shouldn't you do some good research to come up with good news analysis?

Seems like most want a changed, have voiced their desire for a change, but nothing changes. Makes me wonder if we truly live in a democracy. We scream and pound our fists, but no one listens. If we all go out and vote for change in 08 and no change comes, we will then know without a doubt, we the people have no voice.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/13/2007 6:28:56 PM

to true to true Bush and listening do not go in the same sentence. lets [hope] as that is still free, that the next does listen.
