Food vs. Fuel

The world's food system may be about to go into crisis, and the U.S. government's energy policy may be partly to blame.

Comment: DKNY: The ecological movement, if thats what you mean by 'treehuggers' have been pushing for Ethanol made from agricultural waste products, not edible corn. The Bush administration and the corporate agriculture its aligned with, such as ADM, are the ones who have been pushing for this food vs fuel form of ethanol production, and not because the don't know about economics, but because their economic plans only serve themselves.

Comment: Thre is no balance between both side and the lack of farsightness is deffently lacking in planning food production and alternate energy production. In orhter words lack of common sense.

Comment: It doesn't take an economist to understand that corn-based ethanol is a ridiculous idea. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line, we decided to listen only to the tree-huggers, and not to people who have a clue about economics. Corn-based ethanol is an inefficient solution and will get us nowhere near where we need to be in terms of alternative fuels. In the end, it will cause higher prices for food, and it will fool farmers into building expensive infrastructure for corn-based ethanol, which will ultimately be unused.

Comment: Sugar canes are the most efficient for ethanol production. It requires the least hectares for a given amount of fuel. I think corn comes after sugar and wheat.

Comment: One can only hope that on the serious environmental challenges that we face that we will find leaders with more spine than the current crop of presidential candidates. To my knowledge, only one has had the guts to step up and suggest that corn ethanol does not make sense. I'll leave it to you to discover which one.

Comment: Food is one commodity that should never be used for anything other than nutrition to generate life. Let these so called bioengineer's find new jobs, quite possibly in the electronics field so they may someday soon convince the auto industry that they already have the technology to make and use electric cars that can regenerate and recharge the very batteries that power these cars they say are electric. Hah, if they are so concerned, they should start doing the right things to bring about the real changes that are nesessary to build a better world for the people that will need to get to work and travel in the future. Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
