"Based on my experience as a liver transplant specialist and my anecdotal observations both personally and with family members, as a supplement the Cheerz product has significant beneficial biological effects in assisting the liver in the metabolism of alcohol, and is remarkably effective in reducing the symptomatic effects of alcohol toxicity with moderate social use."
Dr. Dirk P. Slaker, M.D., gastroenterologist, hepatologist

"As a physician and a scientist the Cheerz product appeals to me as it specifically targets acetaldehyde metabolism. In this respect it is completely different from other purported anti-hangover products, many of which are simply activated charcoal or repackaged vitamins. There is growing evidence that acetaldehyde is a main cause of hangover symptoms and also Asian flush. By helping to remove this toxic chemical from the body, Cheerz can alleviate hangover and flushing symptoms."

Comment: here's a good hangover 'cure' . 1 large red bull (sugar free) or other energy drink (make sure it has tourine and arginine) mixed with one serving of emergen-C or Air-borne ( its the vit. C thats important) and 1 asprin w'/8 0z of water. take this the second you wake up and you'll feel better in no time. then eat a good breakfast.
FYI miw the drink and vit C supp. in a oversized glass cause it will fizz up and spill out the can if you don't.

Comment: Maybe it's getting better since bars have gone smoke-free, but I'm convinced much of the hangover misery I felt in my university days came from breathing in second-hand smoke while drinking. Yet it doesn't even get mentioned. I'm no doctor, but doesn't it make sense that anything that robs the body of life-giving oxygen can't can be good for you?

Comment: Good to see that there are other people out there (unfortunately not this author) who have discovered Cheers. I read this article in print the first time and couldn't believe that they didn't mention it. As a scientist I think it is unfortunate that all anti-hangover remedies are lumped into the same category. There is a big difference in formulations that target known toxins like acetaldehyde and products that are essentially just activated charcoal.

Comment: have a guarnateed remedy: when you get home at night from a rough night of drinking, eat two-pieces of bread (or something like that, maybe pizza or such), drink two-glasses of water, and take a tylenol, and make sure you brush your teeth and wash your hands and face (to get all the smell of alchohol and cigarettes off you-this just adds to nausea in the morning). set you alarm for 7am, no matter how difficult it is to wake up, take a pee (your water from the night before will help flush out the alcohol), drink two more glasses of water, take two-extra strenght tylenols (this will also help you sleep), take one-hit of some marijuana (help you fall back asleep and cure the nausea), and go back asleep for anther four hours. when you wake up at 7 you will feel like death, but when you wake up around 11:30 or noon you will feel much better, hydrated, and head-ache and nuasea-free. i promise this works!!!

Comment: I was hired to evaluate two (2) ???sober-up??? supplements ??? we let people get hammered with whatever they wished to drink ??? both genders, all ages, beer, wine and spirits or combinations of each. All subjects signed an informed consent. There were a total of 15 individuals in each evaluation. Once inebriated, I then had them breath 3 times into a breathanalyzer ( this unit was calibrated with alcohol saliva testing) and took an average value. All subjects had a BAC > 1.0 (were legally drunk) all subjects were given three capsules of the supplement with an 8 ounce glass of water. The BAC was repeated using the same breathanalyzer in 30 and 45 minutes. All subjects reduced their BAC to below 0.08. Most of the subjects were called the next morning (some had already gone to work, gave a wrong number or checked out of their hotel). All subjects responding reported little if any ???hangover???. These products are currently being refined and could be ???on the market??? in early 2008. Think of the lives that could be saved or the accidents prevented if either one of these were routinely used.

Comment: The biggest problem I run into with drinking isn't the after effects, it's the other people trying to convince me to drink more. "I'm trying to keep it to a minimum" or " I'm not interested " just don't work. A sure fire way to get the 'friends' to leave me alone is simply "I can't, I'm an alcoholic" Nobody wants to give a drink to an alcoholic.

Comment: You may notice they only mention aspirin and ibuprofen for pain relief, although these can be hard on the stomach unlike Tylenol. This might seem like an odd recommendation for a hangover. However one should not mix Tylenol aka acetaminophen aka paracetamol with alcohol or a hangover--it can lead to liver disease. Acetaminophen is also found in over the counter cold medicines and prescription pain relievers such as Vicodin. So it's elso easy to get acetaminophen from multiple sources and not even be aware. Stick to aspirin or ibuprofen as the article indicates.

Comment: Oh, wow ! I see that I'm not the only one who grabs the Cheerz before hitting the bars. I've read some of the comments on this article and it seems like people are advocating a bunch of different stuff, but I agree with a couple of the other posters: people you HAVE to try Cheerz. I starting taking it in college when it was called Rebound, and haven't looked back. I know this sounds like I'm jumping on the proverbial "band wagon" but it really does work. Maybe a bit pricier than all the other b.s. out there, but I think you pay for the science behind it. Some people mentioned that they are manufacturing liquid shots. I haven't tried them yet but cannot WAIT for them to get into my city.
As a couple posters already mentioned, you should check out the website: www.cheerzhangover.com

Cheerz is the only one that I have tried and had results with. It is just a matter of time before people catch on. The author states that acetaldehyde is the cause of a hangover and Cheerz is the only remedy I have found that addresses this.

Comment: The author is supposed to learn something before posting.
Perhaps they were unready to digest http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/aa05.htm in their state 'at presstime.'
Still, not bad for an article written on a blackberry despite the material wrongness of it.

I was thinking Wingman (preventative stuff you have to take a bit ahead of the drinking) and the presctiption drugs that fix the headache bits (not an enviable job, fixing drunks up; better a doctor than a towtruck and ambulance though.)

  • Posted By: bartender16 @ 12/13/2007 6:36:55 PM

Comment: No I don't work for Cheerz but I wish I did--and had stock options. Instead of claims there's science behind it. It says to take a 1 oz shot for every 3 or so drinks. I take 3 and am set for the nite. No cravings for more booze, bloody marys, greasy junk food or bong hits the next day. Maybe just a little tired. I drink beer so take it straight but when bars realize they can mix this right in drinks and do something good instead of jacking people's heart rate with Red Bull this stuff is gonna blow up big time.

The stuff works, simple as that. As for the question about the science, from their web site:

Succinicate: Helps reduce the effects of acetaldehyde by activating the second half-cycle of tricarboxylic acids to help accelerate the decomposition of acetaldehyde and the energization of the oxidation processes in the mitochondria, and has been shown to bolster the immune system and stimulate neural system recovery.

L-glutamine and N-acetyl cysteine: Alcohol inhibits the availability of glucose through an insulin-mediated mechanism. L-Glutamine and N-acetyl cysteine contain a sulfhydryl group effective in scavenging acetaldehyde and to help the liver manufacture glutathione, one of the body's most important naturally occurring antioxidants and detoxifiers.

Milk thistle (silymarin): A powerful proven blood and liver antioxidant that scavenges free radicals that can damage the liver and helps protect liver cells (and other cells in the body and brain) from toxicity.

Comment: Right. Hangovers can't be cured. But they CAN be prevented, if you don't fall for repackaged vitamins and take something with some practical science behind it. If of course you can get past your irrational paranoia. Maybe quit drinking for awhile and let what's left of your brain heal. Enjoy your hangover.

Comment: i was googling anti-hangover remedies and found this article:

    http://www.just-drinks.com/article.aspx?id=92343

it's about cheerz and how people anti-drinking freak-outs are condeming it because it'll make people drink more, apparently. if you don't want to register for the site (i'm gonna get junk mail now), here's some excerpts:
A product launched in the US which claims to reduce the effects of a hangover has been condemned by proponents of sensible consumption and marketing of alcohol.

The new product, called IntelliShot, is described as a "liquid supplement that helps naturally flush alcohol's most toxic metabolite".

IntelliShot's producer, a Las Vegas-based company called Cheerz USA, claims that the 45ml lemon-lime flavoured shot, which can be drunk straight or as a mixer, contains a blend of powerful immune system boosters and super-antioxidants "clinically proven to help naturally reduce and eliminate acetaldehyde, a powerful muscle poison created as the body breaks down alcohol in the liver".

Peter Duff, chairman of Alcohol in Moderation, an international body which aims to promote the responsible consumption of alcohol and which is supported by drinks companies, told just-drinks he was "shocked" by the idea of such a product, adding that by offering to alleviate the effects of a hangover it was encouraging binge-drinking and went counter to the industry's message of advocating responsible consumption.

I think that's an interesting debate. does anybody actually think that reducing hangovers will cause people to drink more ? they should write an article on that.

  • Posted By: UofM Poster @ 12/13/2007 4:03:27 PM

Comment: Interesting that there is such a lack of solid research on this problem. I persoanlly think the majority of hangover is due to the depletion of water in the blood due to the action of the kidneys in removing the toxic byproducts of achohol metabolism When it is depleted below a certain level the kidneys are unable to continue the cleansing function and these toxins remain in the blood. As a result, you endure a slow and damaging 'poisoning' until these fluids are replaced. As well, the depletion of the fluids depletes certain ceral-spinal fluids adding to the resulting pain.

That is why I've always found plenty of water during and shortly after drinking and perhaps an apsirin to be the best defense against this malady..

I'm not saying I feel 100% after getting blasted, but the effects are very noticeable. i havent tried the shots, but the pills are four bucks a pack too, and if I eat just one pack before going out, i'm golden. 8 bucks a weekend is well worth it. the shots probabl cost more because they're sold in nightclubs and everything is more expense in bars. and its supported by a ton of science, just go the their website

Comment: The easiest way to avoid a hangover, for me, is to space my drinks out. I stick to roughly one drink an hour, or two if I've had a full meal and don't plan to keep up the pace all night. I get lots to drink during the day, and occasionally will take a prophylactic dose of advil or something before bed. It also has the nice effect of letting me get loose enough to enjoy the effects, but not wasted. But I've never had a hangover in my life, even when I've overindulged, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Comment: There is one cure for hangovers.Smoke some damn pot, the headache goes and the hunger comes back.Don't even drink in the first place just get a little high. But really as me and most of my friends do after every time we drink is just get high when we wake up. Its the perfect cure. Not only does the hangover go away but you feel great.REMEMBER,when a hangover arrives:SMOKE SOME DANK, GET OUT OF THE TANK!

  • Posted By: AnnaD85 @ 12/13/2007 12:11:25 PM

Comment: Yes, nothing cures the hangover like some THC. It gets rid of the nausea and allows you to eat without spewing after one bite. Go get some greasy fries and eat them slowly! Just remember, despite how much you want to, down down a big glass of water when you wake up! A little bit of room temp water, then wait then some more after 15 minutes or so, repeat, repeat, repeat! Also, if there is anywhere near you that has an oxygen bar it does WONDERS for a hangover! 10 minutes of oxygen and you feel like a new person. Then some more THC and a nap....TA DA!

Comment: There actually is one cure for hangovers. Most people might not be able to participate in this activity, but smoking some pot when you wake from a terrible hangover does the trick. Get a little high and the headache goes away and the hunger comes back. I know this works for a fact and I have many comrads that awould vouch for this remedy. Smoke some dank, come out of the tank.

Comment: i would rather smoke a joint [no hangover,no addiction after one or two and it only affects the mind and body for 4-5hrs to "ground zero no headach] but hey this is your choice, suffer, just don't do what most do and drive! Then quit,, and remember your life in whole, it beats "what did i do last nite"! smokers do not suffer lose of memory, drinkers do, hence why our elected officials drink morn, noon, and all nite long as they have limos who get them home, a NATION who believes it's ok to do, so they can do all over tomorrow. Yet they say SOCIAL drinking is good for you, just not the family you killed driving, but hey its good for you, D.C. said so, in a report they paid for it to say! Don't say no, Don't say yes, Say WHY!!! Kept my kids clean and alive, there whole lives, i don't lie to them either! When my 12yr old asked about Heroin i took him to the mourge to teach, where you end up, and what will you look like when the drug is done with you! i did the same with booze, i showed him what was left from a drunk driving accident, victims, and what was left of the driver, and he herd the parents of the dead. my kids were told the truth about it all, so they knew what they were doing from day one, and day one has yet to come, and both have been drinking age for 3+years and stilll don't drink or drugs or sex till it's the proper time! A song from my past [devil music as called by my parents when they WERE alive} "Teach your children well" real devilish hu,, to bad the lessons we herd in our music, you refused to learn! Now, is almost our time. If we can ever get another president young enough to get it up! While you tie one on again, and again, and again, and again, for years can i say this, maybe someone who drinks EVERY DAY will stop, if just one, it's a start! If you want to die, jump off a bridge!! It leaves the inocent victim out!

Comment: THC = Total Hangover Cure. Seriously. And unlike NSAIDS, it won't increase the damage to your liver or have any other toxic effects. Curing hangovers is probably the top medical use of cannabis.

Comment: I've sworn by a product called "Cheerz" for the last couple years. I have several friends who use it as well every time they drink. I've tried most of the other stuff out there, but Cheerz is the only one that works. They have a website that explains all the science behind it -- it deals with the first problem mentioned in the article: acetaldyhyde production by the metabolism of alcohol. This stuff really works, and the cool thing is that another poster commented -- they have liquid shots that you can mix in with drinks. I'm still waiting for the bars around here to start offering it.

Comment: There is a web site "Puking and Hangovers" run by an MD. This MD suggests lots of fluids to detox the system. After drink ig I used totake Alka Seltzer, but a few asprin seem to help. Fortunately I have not over indulged in many mnay years so I don't have the problem. But, my 21 year old daughter knoked off 12 drinks in five or six hours and she was in agony for three days!. (Just like her dad used to be. She drank too much. Period

Comment: Cheerz IntelliShot contains milk thistle (silymarin), plus N-acetyl cysteine, succinic acid and more, and comes in a lemon lime flavored, 1.5 oz shot that can be taken straight or substituted for the syrupy sugar mixers used in martinis, margaritas and mojitos to create a functional, reduced toxicity libation.

Comment: Delete-Happy MOD: If your reporter has spent more time researching the actual cause of hangover and alcohol damage you would not be so quick to delete my post. In fact it should have been part of the story. Any fool can say the best way to prevent hangovers is to not drink. Do your readers a service and let them get the facts for themselves.

Comment: Milk thissle, vitamin B complex and water before going out. Milk thissle is for liver detox. Alcohol breaks down the vitamin B in your body and dehydrates you. Plus it is an all natural hangover prevention method, no side effects.

Comment: Last night before going out I took 2 milk thissle pills and 1 vitamin B complex. Milk thissle is for liver detox and alcohol kills the vitamin B in your body. Long story short, I helped drink a bottle of wine, a bottle of vodka and a 30 pack of beer. Way too much booze. But I DO NOT HAVE A HANGOVER. Milk thissle and vitamin B.

Comment: Hands down the best by far is Cheerz - www.CheerzHangover.com - Works by helping the body naturally flush acetaldehyde, the chemical produced as the liver breaks down booze. Amazing stuff, I never drink without it. They have a new lemon lime IntelliShot you can take straight or as a mixer so you can offer your party guests Hangover-Free martinis, margaritas, mojitos, etc.

Comment: I use The Cure - it's a healthy, all-natural hangover remedy. You can find it at many liquor stores, but also online at Amazon.com. It's really the only thing I've used that actually works. You just mix the powder with water and drink it before you go to bed. VERY easy.

Comment: I started using The Cure a couple of months ago and haven't had a hangover since. Nothing is perfect, but I feel 90% when I should probably feel 30% and sick. You don't have to use that much water...I use more like 8-10 and it's fine.

Comment: Close Call is the one that works for me. it's kind of hard to find in stores but worth every penny. Drink a bottle at the end of the night and the hangover symptoms are GREATLY reduced, usually completely gone by wake up time. http://www.dmdclosecall.com/

  • Posted By: csim @ 12/13/2007 7:52:10 AM

Comment: No comment about drinking water? My worst hangovers have come when I DID NOT drink any water before going to bed. If I drink, then I drink a lot of water before I go to bed. How much? About 2 glasses of water for every drink. If I have 4 glasses of wine, I have 6 glasses of water before I go to bed. I can already hear the "that's impossible" crowd crying into their bottles of aspirin. Think ahead. Have a glass of water while you are drinking. Have a glass when you leave and then finish the water when you get home. No, you won't go pee as you sleep, you grew out of that phase when you were 4 yrs old.

Comment: I heard that if you find a Jew and get him to give you 1 penny, itll reverse the curse of the hang over god and you will feel better again. This may be a folk tale, I dont know.

Comment: This one always works if I remember to do it ... take a vitamin B complex with a large glass of water before bed -- it's critical at bedtime, and the same in the morning. It always eliminates the headache and sensitivities for me; a hot shower and a good solid meal after a good sleep takes care of the rest of the "pudding head" stuff. But NOT bingeing is the perfect cure!
