How many rockstars have gotten away with this behaviour? More than anyone know no doubt. For his name to be synonymous with wife beating must mean the guy was not worth venerating.

Elvis Presley abused drugs and died of an overdose in his own toilet. But that's not the first thing that comes to anyone's mind when they think or talk about Elvis Presley, nor is it the first thing that the press writes about. Yet, black musicians have been pilloried for personal failures that every major musician cannot deny. Chuck Berry was jailed and his career nearly destroyed because he employed a young woman who lied about her age and traveled with the band as a secretary. He was charged with abducting a minor and taking her across state lines. if Jimi Hendrix had not died young, I'm sure he would have been charged and jailed for something. What we know about Ike Turner's behavior as a spouse comes from one source, the victim. Noone ever gave Mr. Turner the benefit of the doubt. And people are ready to take the higher moral ground here and wax strong about despicable behavior. I think that we are the most unChristian society in history: so quick to judge when Christ said judge not so that ye be not judged. "He deserves no respect or any accolades" writes someone, because he beat his wife in 1970. You never actually saw him beat his wife. I guess George Bush should not be president because he was a useless alcoholic in 1976! People, please. Ike Turner was a genius and no self-righteous holier-than-thou can take that away.

ooooh, pulling the race card. Arf!

C'mon this is a guy who said I slapped and hit her, but I never beat her. Those are his words. Many people have backed up Tina's claims against Ike. If you want to defend a brute fine, but we both know that the one thing that is absolutely true is you reap what you sow and clearly Ike reaped it all. It's his behavior pure and simple.
As far as Elvis goes there is truth to that, but he also recorded better music and it's the music that overshadows his personal demons. That's not the case with Ike. Yeah Chuck Berry's personal demons landed him in trouble, but Chuck will be remembered mostly for his music and not taking a teenager across state lines.
Bullsfan not everything is the race card, because the disparities do exist, but Ike Turner is not a man that many people will be simpathetic to.

thank you, sheilab, I am well aware that not everything is the race card. I don't recall ever once stating that I thought that. I was simply commenting on the above ignorant comment.

I think he deserved what he got. We have a sick tendency in this culture to give celebrities a lot of leeway in their behaviors. Being a musical genius doesn't exonerate him of his crimes, and I'm frankly unsympathetic. No one has the right to physically harm another human being.

What's amazing about the announcement of Ike's death is his absence. Everything has been about Tina and you would have thought she was the one who died. Yes it's wrong to speak ill of the dead, but you reap what you sow and clearly he was a cruel, brutal man and it's ironic he died in his sleep.

Ike turner is a musical Icon and His song writin was kinda of genius. All great leaders are controlling as angelina Jolie's brother said . No doubt he was that . Out of his Madness he brandished one of the most strongest and beautiful women alive . To Ike Turner, I say Good Riddance. In the late 70's and early 80's, I had the misfortune of seeing this pretender, this vermin, selling his drugs in the apartment building in which I and my wife lived in West Los Angeles. He was a taker in every sense; the world is a lot better off with his overdue departure. Ike, you should'a left a long time ago, ya ***.

This man was a viscious wife beater who preyed on those weaker than he. Hurting others made him feel strong and and powerful. Who he was, by far, overshadows his musical talent. Some things are unforgivable and overshadow any other accomplishments. Good riddance to a miserable human being.

This man was a viscious wife beater. He deserves no respect certaintly does not deserve any accolades.

Regardless of his musical talent and purported genius, being the perpetrator of notorious violence against his spouse and probably his own children made him a very strongly despised man in the entertainment world and the public eye. And for good reason. His conduct was unconscionable.
