When Docs Are in Doubt

There's a reason doctors started acting godlike: some patients wanted to believe it wasn't just an act.

Nice apologetics. That must be why doctors ran with the hierarchical pecking order which insulated them from the drudgery of actual patient care and maximized their financial gain. Because we wanted them to be gods- absolute, autocratic, beyond oversight or accountability.

This has to do with the Jennifer Barrett article in the December 24th issue regarding salt. There was no mention of MSG. monosodium glutenate. MSG was fed to lab rats and it made them unable to realize when they were full thus making them fat. Yet it is in almost every food we buy because it makes us unable to realize we are full and thus we eat more thus buy more.

My family has discovered that it has been making us ill along with making us fat. We are trying to find foods without it. We had an MSG free Thanksgiving and no one got that horrible bloated and too full feeling for the first time in years and it tasted wonderful.

No discussion about salt (sodium) should be written without including MSG.

Nice to read. After all who could be better than BETTER HALF to know the confusing mind of the doctor. Yes it is true that nothing can be certain. The doctor a big guesser can make a better guess. But to satisfy todays person/Patient is not easy. All the known can be guessed. But the problem is when unknown is asked ? The limitations are that we can only know from the past and follw he events as they shape up.The problem is when unknown is asked. Human mind, as always wants to see the other side the Unknown. Why blame the Poor DOC. What way is he different from the mechenic or a technician? DrM.R.KotwalMD,FACG,MRCP,FRCP

the pressures must be enormous for an individual who takes the responsibility that medical doctors take for saving lives...i agree with the author that it is also the fault of patients who prefer to think of their physician as some godlike superman rather than as human. the statistics on addiction and alcoholism in the medical profession bear witness that doctors are human but are living with expectations that they be perfect.

Just remember that they are all just "practicing." And practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent. Let's hope that they are practicing the right things.

Great! Such a clear and wise writing. Docs are gererally thought as the Hand of The GOD. Anyway, sometimes they're able to do nearly impossible. In fact, treatment is mental and ??n my opinion Docs should act being awared of these realities. Even impossible sometimes, patiens need hope and motivation everytime. Being a Doc doesn't mean knowing Sobotta and Anatomy totally, being a Doc means being and living like a human... Alper Buyukarslan. Istanbul-Turkiye

Here in France, most doctors still don???t like their patients asking too many questions or suggesting treatment. Several times I told our many doctors of finding on the Internet a new drug or remedy for my wife???s many health problems, only to be rebuffed without a reasonable response. Perhaps they had just never heard of it but more likely, by the way they brushed off my inquiry, they simply didn???t appreciate my intrusive questioning of their reserved domain.

I personally enjoy when my doctor discusses things and includes me in on the healing process. I don't think medical school makes you a genius, it just gives you more tools to use. I feel I have had enough schooling and do research on my own, so I want to be included as an intelligent partner not as a little peon who knows nothing about my medical condition. Doctors should not act like Gods because they are not Gods. I would never go to an arrogant Godlike doctor. That kind of doctor has no heart.
