Comment: As far as the glowing cats go, they were trying to develop treatment for genetic disease. Why vilify these Korean scientists who are trying to better the human race? Should they really be spending that money to support war of feed the starving children of other countries? I think not. My intentions aren't to offend, but the parents of said starving children should not have chosen to procreate if they couldn't feed their offspring.

Comment: Well I suppose science wants to find new stuff...but all that genetic modification mumbojumbo aside, I sure hope those wolves will be given a happy life. They're wild animals and need space, so hopefully that cage they're gnawing on isn't home.

Comment: in my last comments I had two different peices of info when I was talking about the glowing fish but I just found the article. These scientists in Taiwan used a gene found in some jellyfish to make zebra fish glow! They sold it to some company that sold the fish (now called GloFish or Night Pearl Fish) as pets. You can buy them at some pet stores except if you live in California. Weird isn't it? Oh! Almost forgot! It's from 2004 in a book by that science education company "Brain POP".

Comment: I think glowing animals are cool. Glowing CLONED animals = win.

  • Posted By: smartchica69 @ 12/29/2007 11:15:16 PM

Comment: WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO CLONE ANIMALS? I MEAN ALL YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IS BREED......WAIT.......AND THERE YOU GO ANOTHER ANIMAL/ORGINISM. YA, IT MIGHT NOT BE THE COLOR YOU WANT IT OR IT MIGHT NOT KNOW THE SAME STUFF BUT GET OVER IT. ALSO, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE AN ANIMAL/ORGANISM GLOW? SO YO CAN SEE IT IN THE NIGHT? I AGREE WITH SMARTGIRL63 ABOUT THAT THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW THEN MAKING ANIMALS GLOW. I THINK THAT THEY NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE WAR AND ALL THE STARVING CHILDREN THEN MAKING ANIMALS GLOW. I MEAN THINK ABOUT IT. HMMMMMMMMMM.........STARVING CHILDREN AND WAR.........OR............MAKING ANIMALS GLOW. HOW STUPID COULD THEY GET. WITH ALL THE MONEY THAT THEY ARE SPENDING ON THE GLOWING ANIMALS THEY COULD HELP THE LITTLE STARVING CHILDREN OR MAKE DONATIONS TO HELP THE TROOPS OVER SEAS.

Comment: I'm not particularly religious, but the idea of cloning anything gives me the heeby jeebies. That aside, from what i'v read, the idea of the glowing component is not just to see if they can make fluffy glow; it's to see if they could clone the genetically manipulated organism/animal. It's kind of like changing a computer file and then "saving as" to a new file, and then making copies of the new file. They can just reproduce the genetically manipulated organism over and over, instead of manipulating the genetic make-up of each individual organism. They just used the glowing side effect to catch people's attention.

Comment: when people mess with the natural order of things (like cloning animals), they think that what they are doing is acceptable. But actually, they come off as looking stupid. And abbylouise is right. There are other more important things going on right now than cloning cats to make them glow. I mean, they figured out how to make fish glow about 3 YEARS ago! And I can see how humanely testing on amimals would be acceptable if it was for an important cause. I don't understand why or where people get theotivation to do these kinds of things. Is it because of some kind of mental problem? If it is, wouldn't the simple solution be just to get a gosh darn shrink!?!?!? Whatever the reason, my motto is "if it's sensible, do it. If it's stupid, don't".

  • Posted By: smartgirl63 @ 12/29/2007 9:16:04 PM

Comment: people who mess with animals for their own entertainment must
think that what they are doing is acceptable in society but really,
in my opinion, they come off as being just plain stupid! I can see
why a simple, humane experiment that could change many peoples'
lives may be acceptable. But if it's for something so stupid as glowing
cats... I mean, COME ON! It's not important. They figured out how to
make fish glow five YEARS ago. I don't get how people get the motivation
to do these things. Is it some kind of mental problem? If it is why can't
they just get a shrink instead of messing around with animal genetics?!?!

Comment: So sad. Childrend are starving there and they are cloning animals.

  • Posted By: Kiba-Kun_Kawaii @ 12/29/2007 8:56:15 PM

Comment: *below I have in my comment "...they are susucsessful, they will tat cloning..." it should be START cloning. not tat. Sorry*

  • Posted By: abbylouise @ 12/29/2007 8:55:39 PM

Comment: Why did the animals have to "wait to die". Couldn't they be humanly put to death??? Notice workers JUST looking on in the back ground.

  • Posted By: Kiba-Kun_Kawaii @ 12/29/2007 8:48:11 PM

Comment: I hate the cloning! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!!!!! The only reason that they are cloning with animals is that it is too dangerous to test on humans. Then when they are sucsessful, they will tat cloning humans. We should not be even trying this, as a specis on our own, humans. I love the Earth and everything in it, except one specis. The bigest mistake ever made by the Infallible One, God, was humans. WE ruined the Earth, in all its goodness. The earth would still exsist in 250 years if we weren't here. With all our polution, litering, and wars. WE are the worst possible beings alive, and/or dead.

  • Posted By: Yuna @ 12/29/2007 8:43:36 PM

Comment: Are these scientists cloning inicent animals for peoples entertainment??? Why do these scientists test animals to help with our health??? They are selfish people who don't care about animals feelings! This only goes for scientists that test on animals.

I feel soooo sorry for that vet who got his hand bit off by that croc, but the i am glad they didn't hurt the croc.

Why does it say they shot Barbaro????? Thats not what it says in the article. Barbaro was a good horse!

  • Posted By: mchiwbbr @ 12/29/2007 8:02:27 PM

Comment: that is pretty sad about the cats. WHY WHY WHY!!! cant you just let the animals live like normal.

  • Posted By: gtegman @ 12/29/2007 6:21:51 PM

Comment: Okay,The glowing cat thing. The obvious first question: Is this unhealthy?. Also, Why do this to these animals? I admit it is bizarre and cool looking. But why? If God wanted them to glow He would of done it. I have a bad feeling about these kind of experiments. These are God's creatures and I dont like the idea of experimental tampering with genes to a point especially for entertainment purposes. Call me a party pooper, but, let science create legitimate, healthy and useful things, not this. gtegman@yahoo.com Everett,WA

  • Posted By: DarlyneR @ 12/29/2007 3:25:51 PM

Comment: I feel Barbaro should be named Animal of the Year. He fought to the bitter end,he wanted to live!!!! Barbaro, by far is the most Amazing Horse of the Century!!!! I also feel Gretchen and Roy Jackson and Dr. Richardson should be named incredible people of the Year. They too, wanted Barbaro to live and did everything humanly possible to keep him here with us. I will never forget Barbaro and the amazing people in this comment.

Comment: This is utterly disgusting. Destroying animals and trees together. I am sure they can find a better way.

  • Posted By: Animalloverz @ 12/29/2007 1:02:07 PM

    Comment: This is utterly digusting!!!!

  • Posted By: familycourt@hotmail.com @ 12/29/2007 12:38:53 PM

Comment: Why cant' we educate people??? Why are they so stupid? The things that they do to animals and to one another??? I wish we could take all the children and place them in boarding schools, while the parents work only to see them on the weekends, just like the wealthy children, paid for by the government instead of these public schools that are a disaster... Then teach them the religion they want, how to be smart, perhaps gentlemen and ladies. I think then with stucture and guidance perhaps we could regain what it is that we lost from so many years ago. respect....

Comment: I think Michael Vick should be thrown in a ring with all the most vionlent prisoners and froced to fight for his life for the next 23 months and if he doesn't perform well he should be put down. Not really I wouldn't even do that to a piece of crap like him, even though he was willing to do it to a inocent amimal for entertainment. People who fight dogs are missing part of their humanity, I can't even imagine when I look at my dogs how anyone could do something like that.

Comment: The heart of the industry is in your last statement. "You can't breed a dead horse". This animal was made to suffer far longer than necessary in the hope he would survive to be a breeder. Human greed was probably the reason he was kept alive so long. I am not a member of PETA or SHARK but beleive that animals are here for our use. Along with the right of use comes the obligation to provide quality humane care putting thier neeeds over our economic gains.

Comment: I have the privilege of owning two beautiful thoroughbreds, one of whom I had to euthanize due to a severe bout of colic. Losing ANY horse is a horrible experience, but I just wonder why it was that Barbaro got so much attention. I have no doubt he was a magnificent horse and might possibly have been as good as some of racings most famous stars had he not broken down. However there have been MANY magnificent horses that have broken down that nobody even knows or cares about (Timely Writer, Star Over the Bay, Go For Wand, Pine Island, Prairie Bayou who in 1993 won the Preakness and finished second in the Derby, he lost his life in the 1993 Belmont Stakes. What of poor George Washington? Never heard of him? A MULTIPLE CHAMPION in Europe this beautiful horse lost his life in October at the Breeder's Cup. Where were the headlines about him???? This list could go on and on) my point being what made Barbaro's break down more important than any of the other horses who give their lives for our pleasure. Again I have nothing against Barbaro and the fact that he brought awareness to the darker side of racing is a positive thing. I'm just saying that he wasn't the first champion to lose his life and he won't be the last. They all deserve to be mourned from the Kentucky Derby winners to the lowest level claimers.

Comment: Sport, athlete, whatever.... I love horses, not horse racing. Take away all the gambling and the "sport" would fade away. How many horses have to be put down to keep this archaic "sport" alive. Come on people, lets just bet on just the jockeys running around the track.

  • Posted By: Tatianasvoice @ 12/28/2007 8:42:09 PM

Comment: As a horse owner, it is always devastating to have to put down a horse but sometimes it has to be done. To "larrydee", you obviously are clueless and must suffer from the same ailment of being without brains that you accuse others of, because if you had brains you would understand that sometimes the most humane thing to do is to put down an animal. Most horses are put down much sooner than Barbaro was mostly due to the fact that it is extremely expensive to give the same care that Barbaro was given and this is a shame. Trust me when I say that if there was anyway that Barbaro could have been saved, he would have been. He was worth much more money alive then dead, you can't breed a dead horse!

  • Posted By: Maribel108 @ 12/27/2007 2:01:41 AM

Comment: Barbaro deserves to be NUMBER 1.....he was without question the best racehorse we have seen in years !!! A virtual Secretariat in the making !!!! It is however callous and crude to insinuate that his connections would shoot him!!!!!! He was humanely euthanized when there was no further hope of recovery when all four feet had been affected by laminitus an extremely painful condition....Barbaro and ALL his connections were a CLASS ACT and don't deserve your cheap shots!!!!! Please apologize immediately!!! I am not impressed!!!!!

  • Posted By: jac1024 @ 12/26/2007 11:16:39 PM

Comment: What an incredibly callous thing to say. Was it supposed to be funny or clever? If so, it was a dismal failure. Maybe instead of a joke you should have opted for something kind and respectful.

  • Posted By: Larrydee @ 12/26/2007 9:42:48 PM

Comment: What is wrong with these people? They should be "put down" for not having brains.

  • Posted By: Barbaro_fan86 @ 12/26/2007 9:27:36 PM

Comment: Barbaro was the best horse there was why did they put his picture up there.

  • Posted By: crabcake @ 12/26/2007 9:00:45 PM

Comment: Yes that was really stupid to make such a headline. First of all, they don't shoot horses. Where is the editor?

  • Posted By: Sonny @ 12/26/2007 8:03:22 PM

Comment: That was just a plain dumb ideal to put that headline about Barbaro. I love Barbaro!!!!!

  • Posted By: Sonny @ 12/26/2007 8:00:59 PM

Comment: They did not shoot Barbaro so why did you put that as a headline that was so stupid.

  • Posted By: pkjfinn @ 12/26/2007 3:53:24 PM

Comment: can i send these to a friend ?? and how

  • Posted By: morimac @ 12/26/2007 3:33:16 PM

Comment: That was an absolutely stupid headline. Do you hate horses?????????? The most beautiful animal God made. I'm glad i didn't have to read your article.

Comment: The BARBARO story was, indeed, a big story of the year. He was an outstanding athlete, and the story of the Love, Courage, and Determination of the horse and the people connected to him, is unique and inspirational. The saving grace in this tragedy, is that the work goes on. BARBARO's legacy is to end the transport of American horses for slaughter, finding a cure for Laminitis, promoting horse rescue organizations across the country, as well as safer racetrack surfaces, and breeding for soundness. BARBARO still has fans around the world. He will never forgotten. Your vulgar headline, "they shoot horses," is ignorant, shameful and insensitive. Otherlyn, in Grand Rapids Michigan
