    Good Analysis Mr. Alter.

It is clear from both his campaign tone and also his policy positions that Senator Obama is the pragmatic change agent who will not only open the process to the people but will also ask those with different opinions (including drug and insurance companies) to participate.

Obama constantly says that he while the drug and insurance companies will have a seat at the table, they will not buy ALL the chairs. Obama's record in Illinois indicates that he will get the neccessary changes through the congress by listening to all diverse opinions.

isn't it so very, very funny how every democratic presidental candidate is attempting to portray themselves as change candidates: that is a great, innovative, and refreshing idea. do you know who was the first candidate to promote changing the sysem? Barack Obama. His ideas are so good, that other politicians like to copy them. hillary's healthcare plan is too expensive and makes it mandatory. Poor people can't afford healthcare as it is, why make it mandatory? Edwards' plan is unrealistic. He can't force the insurance companies to walk away. He is truly naive. Obama's isn't perfect either, but it is the best of the three to me. He will compromise with insurance companies and make healthcare more affordable, but not mandatory. His plan seems to be a more evolved combination of Hillary's and Edwards'.

Well put! In real life negotiations and compromises get results, not brute force (plenty of examples to the contrary in the Bush administration). Obama is best suited to achieve results in the real world, in both domestic and foreign affairs.

Hallelujah, Jonathan Alter for coming to the defense of Obama's health plan, and attacking Krugman, both of which are wholly deserving! I haven't understood why Krugman has been attacking Obama so, but then so is everyone. I've always preferred Obama;s health plan over Edwards and Hillary, which they are not being honest about because their plan would cost so much more in covering those additional 15 million people. This is a great article, thank you.

Obama is a good man who would lose the White House for the reason everyone is afraid to discuss - He's black. There's still work to do on race in this country and ignoring it doesn't help.

Another Media gush about Obama, a good man. The insulated media doesn't live in the real world and is afraid to ask the Real Question: Is America ready to vote for Black man?
I Would vote for him, but I also know that many, too many - independants And democrats - would find some justifiable reason, probably experience, to not pull that lever.
