Huckabee still has tougher laws than Mass. in Arkansas, so what is ur point hoops. He still ran Arkansas better than Romney in Mass. Huckabee will win and you kow it, that is why you are on his site trying to cause problems.

Huckabee is a fair and balanced human being and his efforts to govern Arkansas are noble. To say he is weak because he lowered the sentence on meth is rediculous. Compare the sentences for Mass. and his state and he still comes out on top with a tougher sentencing.

Why should we believe what he says about another candidate who is beating him in the polls when he has not even been honest about his own record??? I lived in Massachusetts when he was governor. I am still waiting for someone to call him out on it. How about you, Newsweek?

    • Posted By: hoopes_az @ 12/20/2007 3:55:45 PM

What are you wanting him to be "called" on?

Huckabee's response to CBN: There's nothing I can do about that other than use what resources we have and to try to tell the truth and get our message out there, but ultimately what I sense is happening - people everywhere will come to me, look me in the eye and say "We are claiming Isaiah 54 for you that the weapons formed against you will not prosper." http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/290437.aspx

Governor Romney proposed an INCREASE in jail time for Meth manufacturers in an extremely liberal state with lax penalties, while Huckabee enacted a DECREASE in penalties in a state with a significant meth problem ??? how this qualifies you Huckabee getting ???tougher on methamphetamine manufacturers than Governor Romney??? is anyone???s guess. No matter how you spin it, under Huckabee penalties were REDUCED by 2 years while Romney tried to INCREASE penalties by 2 ?? - 5 years.

Additionaly, Huckabee claims the Arkansas laws re: meth as proof that he is tougher on crime than Romney. His response to Romney's slight of hand is the biggest distortion of all. Let's be clear, Huckabee inherited the tough laws. He had NOTHING to do with them. His only contribution was to weaken the laws.

TRUE: Arkansas has tougher meth laws than Mass.
FALSE: Arkansas laws are a result of Huckabee's tough stance on crime

This is just another attempt to cloud peoples opinions with tainted personal views from the writers. Your job as a newspaper writer should be to present the information and not create an opinion on the data presented. that is our job as readers.
Just to be clear Mitt Romney did not pardon people that were convicted of doing something wrong. so what if AR as a 40 year penalty and MA only 10 if the Governor will pardon the offenders the penalty is now 0 years!!!! you can't find nothing of substantial weight against Romney so you point these meritless points.

Actually, it doesn't mean they serve no time- it mostly applies to folks who already paid their fine, did their time, or what not, and are now functioning well in society. The pardon allows, for example, someone who commited a minor crime as a juvenile to get a real job and not be a drain on the tax system. It doesn't mean they get off scott-free.

That may be true in some cases, but certainly not in all. I posted this link above, take a look. This is not an article abvout someone who already did his time and is now functioning well in society.

Truth is, Huckabee is crazy. He may be a good man, he may be a nice, guy, he may be a smooth talker, but he simply has not shown good judgement. Good judgement trumps good intentions. Huckabee is filled to the brim with good intentions, but running only a 1/4 tank when it comes to good judgement. The more I've ready about his pardons, the more I am troubled. Read this if your interested in learning yourself:

If Huckabee wins the republican nomination, the democrats will get my vote next year. NEVER thought I would say that, but apart from his Christian values, he is an objectionable candidate to me in every other sense.

Huckabee reduced penalties for inmates only for good behavior. If you take time to think about it it makes sense, it provides incentive for prisoners to clean themselves up which lowers the amount of crime, and considerably reduces what we spend on the prisons. Its a good solution.Of course, there were no similar solutions coming from Romney. All we get is attack ads from Romney which only proves he is sore loser. If all Romney can do is attack Huckabee I can clearly see what kind of man he is.

I don't get it... the article reports that Romney tried to increase penalties in a state with 1 meth lab and even this baby step never made it through a liberal legislature, yet Huckabee reduced penalties for Meth between 2 to 8 yrs (reduction from 70% to 50% of 10-40 yrs) in a state facing a meth epidemic (>400 meth labs!). As for the articles, there are no quote marks in Romney's adds and nothing reported directly contradicts his paraphrasing. There is also no question Huckabee pardoned or commuted more than 1,000 convicts and that, when he left arkansas, taxes were up by $505 million and statewide spending increased from nearly $7 billion to around $16 billion. Where exactly are the "lies"?

There are attacks on Huckabee's character that go over the top -- such as reports that he gave state posts to contributors (as if anyone contributing to a candidate should be barred from public service if he wins). But these commercials are fairly mild by comparison.

I meant at least the Dems aren't spewing the disgusting lies like Romney

  • Posted By: angelo100 @ 12/20/2007 4:43:15 AM

Please everyone get the word out about this snake Mitt Romney. I am a Republican, but I honestly can't stand this guy Romney. He's trying to buy and lie his way into the white house and it's starting to make me sick. He's now crying in two different segments in the past two days on T.V. He's now tied with Rudy G. in the latest national polls each have 20% and Huckabee with 17%. Don't let this snake Romney get elected. He is just like Obama and Hillary what's ever popular at the time is what he's going to be for, until he gets in office. At least the Dems are spewing the disgusting lies though. Romney actually reminds me of Vladimir Putin he don't care about the people or his own country just about his self intrest. Don't let this fraud get elected any Republican BUT Romney and Ron Paul!!!!!! Huckabee or Rudy G would be GREAT!!!!!!

Does anybody really expect Romney to admit the TRUTH about Huckabee's record, especially as compared with his own self-serving stands and flip flops. Expect nothing from now on from Romney(since the debates are over, and he cannot get called on his actions) except all the untruths and lies that money can buy. You know, that kind of money he made leading Bain Capital in dealings that drove American jobs off shore and while cozying up to the Chinese. Listen to Duncan Hunter on Romney--he tells it like it is, not pretty. Too bad Duncan has not gotten enough money to advertise and get the REAL word out on the Mittster. Expect Romney to keep writing checks to buy ads to bring down the ONLY Republican candidate who can win in 2008--Mike Huckabee from the great State of Arkansas. GO MIKE. PAUX ON UNTRUTHS FROM MITT. Even normally liberal Newsweek Magazine sees the truth about Hugh Hewitt's patron who desire to be elected knows no money bounds.

Romney strapped his family dog to the roof of their car and drove the family 12 hours to vacation. I would never trust a man who would treat man's best friend like that.

  • Posted By: kcwac @ 12/20/2007 12:44:37 AM

I am sure this is just Mitts way of keeping Huckabee from talking about the issues. I think we should stick to the issues. The media is pulling the same trick. I like most of Huckabees ideas and would like to here more of what he has to say. But that might get him elected.

  • Posted By: DFCSTech @ 12/20/2007 12:28:41 AM

    Romney is dishonest.

  • Posted By: CheDP @ 12/19/2007 10:22:55 PM

I honestly didn't believe that Newsweek would want to investigate this and report on facts and represent truth. Thank you Newsweek for exposing lies. This is great journalism when we, the public, can learn what we don't hear or see in those Mitt Romney commercials. We are sick of his misleading attacks on Huckabee. Why can't he just be himself and tell the people of his vision for the USA, like Huckabee is doing.. then let us vote accordingly.

  • Posted By: Chris Deaver @ 12/19/2007 10:08:41 PM

Romney did, in fact, uphold his stance against meth, even though it didn't go through in Mass. However, Huckabee loosened up on it, proving liberality and love for drug dealers. Maybe he's stuck in the 60s, and maybe certain liberal news writers are too. Some people are just jealous of Romney for his resources, powerful moral principles, and solid business acumen. If the writers of this article had anything valid to say, they would have focused on something more substantive than bashing a man for effectively describing his positions and then following through. Maybe they could focus on the broken liberal fact machine, and how its gears are grinding overtime to squelch the best candidate for President: Mitt Romney.

I have been following the respective races closely and made the commment that I would not vote for a liar. Romney just lost my possible vote. Of course, by the time the election comes around I won't have anyone to vote for and will have to sit home waiting to see which liar gets elected.

  • Posted By: ibelievehuckabee @ 12/19/2007 7:07:01 PM

Thank you for doing some REAL fact checking on all these lies that Romney is putting out on Huckabee! Mike Huckabee is AUTHENTIC!!!
