I hold in my hand one of the most important pieces of paper in America: Table T08-0071, an analysis of candidate John McCain's tax plan.
OK, it's not really in my hand because I'm typing, but I'm looking at it carefully, and you should too. It is a table constructed by the Tax Policy Center's steely-eyed tax analysts, and it reveals nothing less than McCain's secret plan to diminish the US government beyond recognition. If he gets his way, conservatives will finally be able to say they've achieved the goal set out by Grover Norquist: to get government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub."
The numbers in the table show the revenue loss to the Federal government from McCain's proposed tax cuts. In the far right corner is the 10-year total: -$5.7 trillion.
People deride the Republican candidate as "McSame," implying a continuation of Bushonomics as well as the president's foreign policy. But from the perspective of domestic policy, it's much worse. Sure, McCain extends the Bush tax cuts but that's the least of it. At $1.7 trillion they amount to less than a third of the damage.
Note also that the big ticket tax cuts-eliminating the alternative minimum tax and lowering the corporate tax-both follow on another Bush tradition of exacerbating market-driven (i.e., pre-tax) inequalities by cutting high-end taxes the most.
As I stresshere , McCain's plans to pay for these tax cuts amount to filling a crater with a teaspoon of sand. Earmarks won't get you there, so he'll have to go after discretionary spending. In fact, he's already suggesting a freeze in such spending, excluding defense, of course. Sound inoffensive until you consider that we're talking about kids' health care, education, child care, training for displaced workers, environmental and labor protections, and dozens more programs that lots of people actually need and care about.
Plus, he can't fill the hole he's dug with cuts in these programs either, which leads you to the inevitable punch line of all this: his target is the entitlements,

Social Security and Medicare. Those programs have always been the big enchiladas for the Norquist shock troops and they've never recovered from their Social Security privatization defeat. Well, they're back, incognito.
McCain's top economist, a number cruncher of great integrity named Doug Holtz-Eakin, responds to the Tax Policy's analysis here, and he makes a good point or two, especially regarding the way they score the AMT, but his counterpoints amount to little more than quibbles. In fact, one can't help wonder if Doug, who used to inveigh against supply-side nonsense, has been drawn to the economic dark side. When recently asked about the extent to which these numbers fail to add up, his response was: "I think what [critics] ought to do is remember that the proposals are going to engender economic growth, which is the best thing you can do for near-term budget improvement." That's pure hand waving of the type with which the old Holtz-Eakin had no patience.
This story has yet to catch the fire it should, and hopefully will, once the D's get focused on McCain and his dim vision of government. But the point born of these numbers is as simple as it is compelling:
For seven long years, we've tried entrusting our government to those who discredit it, defund it, and fundamentally disbelieve in its role, except when they seek a lucrative contract or a bailout. We gone down the road-and it is a crumbling road, with potholes and failing bridges -- where the solution to every problem is a tax cut, where critical agencies are staffed with cronies at best and opposition lobbyists at worst, where secrecy trumps transparency and cynicism rules, where budget resources are never available for expanding children's health care, but always there for war.
Table T08-0071 is a road map to taking us far, far deeper into this morass. We must not go there.

McCain's Character -- A Disaster Waiting To Happen
    by John LeBoutillie
Ronald Kessler's excellent piece in Newsmax on Senator John McCain's erratic and explosive temper is 100% dead on target. As someone who has known McCain for 32 years, I can unequivocally state that he should be no where near the Oval Office.

His behavior through the years tells us all we need to know: he is a spoiled brat-turned adult who demeans people who dare to disagree with him; he has an explosive temper that can erupt on a nanosecond's notice; he is a total liar who will tell you something one day and then totally deny it the next (more on that below); he is a political chameleon who is enabled by the so-called Main Stream Media; he is also a megalomaniac whose former POW status has allowed him to get away with things -- i.e. the Keating Five Scandal -- that others would have gone to jail for.

In sum, McCain is a disaster waiting-to-happen.

Now, a story: in 1990-1991 I had the great privilege to meet and ultimately befriend retired Air Force Colonel Ted Guy. Ted had been a POW in Vietnam for over six years -- after being shot down and captured in Laos and driven on the Ho Chi Minh Trail to Hanoi. Ted became famous as the war ended as he tried to bring changes against several of his fellow US POWs who he thought had cooperated with the North Vietnamese while in captivity; after coming home in 1973 his superiors decided not to press charges. But Ted was forever branded a "real hard ass" because of this incident.

For a while Ted was the Senior Ranking Officer (SRO) in -- I believe -- The Plantation (a POW camp on the outskirts of Hanoi) in which John McCain was also being held.

The SRO kept the chain of military order among the POWs; they took orders from him and kept discipline that way.

When I got to know Ted Guy, the US Senate Select Committee on POWs was being organized; McCain was named a member. Ted Guy's thoughts -- then -- about McCain? "John was a good troop in camp."

Ted Guy -- since repatriation in 1973 -- had discounted any chance that living US POWs were left behind in Vietnam after the January 27, 1973 Paris Peace Agreements. In fact, by his own admission, Ted often became gruff with MIA family members who asked him if their loved one might have been left behind in captivity. "I told them there was no chance and they needed to get a life."

This was the same message many of the former POWs were delivering to relatives of the thousands of men who did not come home in Operation Homecoming: "Forget it... we are the only living men... give it up and move on with your lives." Of course, that was easy for them to say: they had come home!!!

The US Government never officially briefed the returning POWs about the egregious violations of the Paris Peace Accords -- by both Hanoi and Washington DC. Washington refused to pay the $4.25 billion President Nixon secretly promised in a February 1, 1973 letter to Premier Pham Van Dong -- and kept hidden from the Congress for three years; Hanoi failed to release the other group of 600 US POWs they were holding as an insurance policy against these funds.

If the truth had been told to our returning heros, they would probably have led the charge for the return of their comrades; but they were not told. Instead they were sent out to America's heartland as the war heros we so desperately needed -- McCain and Ted Guy included.

Except that Ted Guy was intellectually honest enough to read all the new revelations that began surfacing in the 1980's; by 1991 he had seen enough. "I was lied to," he told me. "I am now certain we knowingly left men behind in captivity." Ted also got a fellow former POW, Terry Uyeyama, to join our little 'group' as we went around DC trying to get the US Government to reverse policy and negotiate for the living men still being held in Vietnam and

    Then McCain entered the picture.

As the Senate Committee heated up -- and more and more new information surfaced showing that indeed we did leave men behind held against their will in Vietnam and Laos -- McCain began a long and vicious campaign to discredit and shoot down any new information or anyone advocating that the truth about our POWs be made public. Thus emerged for many to see the mean and ugly side of John McCain.

Ted Guy, his old Senior Ranking Officer and friend and admirer, soon changed his mind about McCain.

A series of odd phone calls to Ted in Missouri from McCain made him question the truthfulness and sanity of McCain. "John would call me one day and say something... and then he'd call a few days later and I'd ask him about what he'd said on the first call and John would completely deny ever saying it!"

So Ted Guy began recording all his phone calls from McCain. "I don't trust him anymore," said Colonel Guy. "I think he is a total liar."

From these taped calls, Ted soon discovered a frequent pattern: McCain often denied things he has just said only a few days earlier!

How to explain this? A liar or a total nut? Or both?

Sadly, Ted Guy died of leukemia 7 years ago. A healthy Ted Guy today could have and would have stood up and told the truth about John McCain -- and had the former-POW status to take McCain on.

McCain these days goes unchecked -- either about his truthfulness or his sanity. Ron Kessler has opened the topic of McCain's explosive and dangerous temper to further public scrutiny. In Ron's story are traces of the lies and denials and admissions -- all at the same time!

In sum, John McCain is not the man for the presidency. He is a fraud.

Yes, he would beat Hillary one on one. And we can't have her either.

But before everyone rushes to sign up for McCain's campaign, let's take a break and learn more about McCain the man and his character.

Once you get to 'know' this man, you will agree: he must be defeated by a real Reagan conservative for the GOP nomination.

On March 26, McCain gave a speech on foreign policy in Los Angeles that was billed as his most comprehensive statement on the subject. It contained within it the most radical idea put forward by a major candidate for the presidency in 25 years. Yet almost no one noticed.

In his speech McCain proposed that the United States expel Russia from the G8, the group of advanced industrial countries. Moscow was included in this body in the 1990s to recognize and reward it for peacefully ending the cold war on Western terms, dismantling the Soviet empire and withdrawing from large chunks of the old Russian Empire as well. McCain also proposed that the United States should expand the G8 by taking in India and Brazil-but pointedly excluded China from the councils of power.

We have spent months debating Barack Obama's suggestion that he might, under some circumstances, meet with Iranians and Venezuelans. It is a sign of what is wrong with the foreign-policy debate that this idea is treated as a revolution in U.S. policy while McCain's proposal has barely registered. What McCain has announced is momentous-that the United States should adopt a policy of active exclusion and hostility toward two major global powers. It would reverse a decades-old bipartisan American policy of integrating these two countries into the global order, a policy that began under with Beijing and continued with Moscow. It is a policy that would alienate many countries in Europe and Asia who would see it as an attempt by Washington to begin a new cold war.

Comment: Dunno. It seems that everyone, not simply McCain,is ''woefully uninformed''about energy. Take Obamas windfall taxes. You do realize what occurred the last time this happened.[Democrat Executive and Legislative branches]. Domestic exploration fell to less than 8%. OPEC importation rose to over 14%. Then Hillary declares that OPEC be cut out of future oil importation to the US,a patently insane idea. OPEC has 173 nations who are importation customers. Would reducing this number by one have any affect on their bottom line? No.
Just as absurd is any idea that wind and solar power will magically replace fossil fuels in a matter of mere months or years. This is a false canard played by true believers who are unsure how to go forward on such ideas anyway. Red states stand ready,as with Texas'Galveston and Padre Island regions, and in the plains states, which are already marshalling windvane energy sources. Blue states are another story. Enviros are fighting to stop any new windvane construction along the bird-migratory Pacific Flyway, and in Cape Cod and offshore Maryland, solely for asethetic reasons.[Both Kennedys in Congress killed a bill to build offshore windvane power sources]. It is expected that such energies will only provide less than 6% of Americas energy needs[US Dept.of Energy www.eia.doe.gov] and will fall into Have and Have-Not groups. The rich will be able to purchase 60-100,000$ solar panel setups. The middle class and below will eat cake if they can afford the flour. Yet it is from this base that rage directed at Washington will flow, demanding that drilling must accompany new technologies. Pass to the 'economy''and both Clinton and Obama are isolationists. Their plans will hurt American jobs even in the short run,and as well, corporate power will be on full display even under a president Obama,if the growing number of lobbyists on K St. is any indication, never mind the pork free-for-alls directed at corporate America by Congress in the nearly two years since the Democrat takeover of that body orchestrated in degrees by both Democratic candidates.[The Center for Responsive Politics at www.opensecrets.org for more on these influences on Obama and Clinton]. If one can make any case that Obama is surefooted on international relations, then why have his advisors been such wretched choices? Goolsbee,McPeak,Powers,Brzheninski and many others including a recently-fired advisor who freelanced with HAMAS,have all been shown the door. Lake and Rice[Susan],were the architects of the Clinton administrations blundering Rwanda policy. Not an auspicious start to replacing the Bush Era,one would agree.

Comment: This Boeing stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. McCain is "old school" Washington, with corporate ties and back room pay-offs. So is Clinton. In this regard, Obama is the only viable candidate, the only one who doesn't have a history of selling out to the corporate moguls.

Meanwhile, McCain tries to position himself as a liberal in regards to energy production. Yesterday's big headline was "McCain Acknowledges Global Warming and Urges Nuclear Power to Combat it."

I am SO GLAD that John McCain has acknowledged the reality of global warming. However, his supposition that nuclear power is "clean energy" is absurd.

Clean energy doesn't leave behind deadly radioactive rods to be disposed of. Clean energy isn't subject to nuclear fallout, meltdowns and explosions. Clean energy doesn't cause birth defects and cancer. Clean energy can't be subverted into nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

Effective clean energy technologies created to date are solar, wind, hydroelectric and hydrogen fuel cells. Ethanol is not clean energy, as it takes immense amounts of energy to create fuel this way, and the big corporate farmers pollute with excessive chemical fertilizers and pesticides. However, it can help us transition our economy away from oil dependency and as such it is an excellent stop gap, especially if we use cellulose ethanol rather than corn based ethanol.

McCain is woefully uninformed about the realities of our energy problems and their potential solutions. McCain is woefully uninformed about the economy, and still hasn't come up with any plans for combatting the recession, paying down the national debt, and restoring lost jobs. McCain is woefully misguided about the war, and wants to pursue a hawkish military policy even though the vast majority of Americans are against this.

I respect McCain and the sacrifices he has made for our country. But right now, we need someone ready to roll up their sleeves and work on our current problems. Someone who can make America stronger before we go down the tubes with our oil dependency, our failure to recognize the shifting global economy, and our blatantly wrong-headed foreign policy. McCain is not that man. I'm a Republican and I'm voting for Obama.

Incidentally, I own and operate two corporations, and I am a full believer in capitalism. But I have watched while many CEOs abuse their power and manipulate lawmakers into legislating on their behalf, as they steadily move jobs overseas. I consider this activity un-American. We have separation of church and state, which is a good thing, intended to prevent religious mania from controlling our government. Now it is time to institute a separation of corporate interest from the state, and prevent corporate greed from controlling our government. This government is "for the people" according to our founding documents. It is in our best interests to keep it that way.

Comment: I just read an article, with stuff that doesn`t surprise me, unfortunately - as the media have been more or less one sided on race issues.
And in that, there has been a rage building up among "whites", as their issues and emotions on it has had to be/and is, in the media; "politically correct repressed" - until it boils and explodes. While 90% of black voters going for Obama, is never questioned and commented in the same way.

And - also, I think, this is some of the answer to why more of Hillary`s supporters won`t vote Obama; it all seems unfair, and Hillary is seen through a certain set on lenses, that "fits" the Obama message and political self righteousness of the media.

    Link to article; http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24588813

And, I do think it has more to do with Obama`s personality and handling of things, than race - being "smooth", brushing off things as "distractions", making people who have an issue with those "distractions" look "stupid" or ignorant (and feeling humiliated never make people smile at the one who caused it....!), that is just in line with the comment on "clinging to their guns and religion" (why isn`t that picked up in the media as "racial" and descending = why he got his elitist label)

    This comment in the article showing and confirming the point that it`s personality and style more than race;
"I think if it was somebody other than him, I'd accept it," she said of a black candidate. "If Colin Powell had run, I would be willing to accept him."

I`d go with Powell, too; he looks solid, genuine, willing to listen, ready, capable & willing to act, down to earth ??? to be trusted.
I wouldn`t expect him to sit in that church for 20 years +....

Address it, before it becomes a wildfire! Let`s put all hurt emotions on the table.

I would have had no hesitance in looking at him for last presidency vs. this nutcase we have had in for the past 8 yrs. I absolutely do not care what color of the skin a candidate is. But do feel that I have to feel that they have a substantial amount of substance behind them for accomplishements to make me feel good about what that candidate who is proposing a whole lot of policies of getting implementing under his Presidency as being able to get implemented.

      • Posted By: Nins @ 05/13/2008 14:27:09

Comment: You say you want your candidate to have "a substantial amount of substance behind them" and you state that Colin Powell has this. I don't get it. Colin Powell is a life-long military man, and has served a Secretary of State (but under a very unpopular President, who tied his hands so much that he resigned). I would see Powell as a viable Vice President or as a diplomat, but he has no experience at all as a legislator or as a politician, so jumping into the Presidency is a bit of a stretch. Obama has far more legislative experience (12 years) than Powell. Obama has a degree in International Relations from Columbia University. And Obama is very hawkish, for a Democrat, and vows to increase military spending, even though he wants a controlled withdrawal from Iraq. Incidentally, Powell wants a withdrawal from Iraq, also. Obama is actually more qualified than Powell to be President. Are you sure about that skin color remark you made?

Since that time to the present plans have existed for implementing universal health care in this country. Hillary had a plan in the 90's but it went nowhere - partially due to her stubborn unwillingness to compromise and deal effectively with others; she was convinced that she was the only one who had the right plan (hasn't changed much, has she?)

    Neos,

It is important to know about the history of health care reform in the U.S. Noteworthy, in 1993, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, an "ultra-right-wing," politically conservative association of physicians and medical professionals, litigiously defeated the Task Force led by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton on National Health Care Reform.

This bastion of medical professionals opposes mandatory vaccination, universal health care and government intervention in healthcare. It's no wonder why nearly 50 million Americans are uninsured.

Much to the dismay of the misanthropic ill-informed, Senator Clinton's early attempts at universal health care were not defeated by HRC's mismanagement or any other purported characterological deficits.

Rather than researching facts, some believe otherwise. The powerful AAPS which believes that there is no right to medical care, and opposes efforts to implement a national health plan defeated the nation's right to access good health care.

Although 15 million persons might remain uncovered under Senator Obama's plan, that's a much better figure than 50 million, and a move in the right direction.

Comment: I think people want to see Obama in the white house so bad that they are willing to throw away the core responsibilities of what a president should be saying and doing. His popularity is beyond touch right now and that is all good for him. But when you break down who is running and why they are running for office and a person still wants to back the lesser of the two then we have a real issue here. Someday we will have a minority run the White House, but why this guy. We have many minorities who have far more experience, intelligence, and knowledge of running the country, yet Americans have chosen Obama, I just can't see why. The bottom line is r u willing to allow your children to live in a country that is operated by someone who is shallow and is quite arrogant. A person looking out for his own behind, and selvish, a leader who will say the right things to get in to office and uses the race card,(which is very low) to achieve his goals. That to me is not a leader but a man who has no soul and needs to be told so. I personally have written to his camp to try and ask the questions I have and I got nothing. For someone who says he is in tune where is his response? PEOPLE WAKE UP WAKE UP....AND VOTE FOR THE RIGHT THING, NOT RACE OR TO SEE WHAT AN EXPERIMENT IN THE WHITE HOUSE WOULD BE LIKE. PEOPLE LIVES ARE AT STAKE HERE.

During a week of reverberations over the sayings of Reverend Wright, the political calculus in Clintonland hopefully reckoned that white voters would swiftly abandon the good ship Obama in a flight of fear following a paroxysm of soul-searching racial uncertainty.

The highly paid strategists of the Clinton campaign sharpened their pencils and carefully calculated their arcane political equations. Following a series of deft tactical maneuvers designed to manufacture a withering crisis, the MSM would subject Obama to another week on the defensive against the phantasmagorical sayings of Rev. Wright following his madcap spree of ill-advised press conferences manufactured to stimulate the undercurrents of racial intolerance still roiling just beneath the surface tension of America.

The Clintonian rationale for this round of "strategy" was at once stark and simple. The Reverend Wright machinations would be especially effective in the Jim Crow-obsessed South and that great state of Indiana, once the home of the national headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan where 30% of the white male population donned the iconic white hoods and robes of the Rolls Royce of race baiting organizations to march 500,000 strong down Pennsylvania Avenue proudly brandishing banners proclaiming their brand of lily white masculine supremacy.

The Clinton campaign's happy coincidence was simplicity itself for the North Carolina and Indiana primaries fell on the very same date. This miraculous synchronicity provided the sacred crucible for the latest media-driven experiment in race-baiting. In gambling terms - and that is precisely what the strategists were doing - they bet the house on the Reverend Wright gambit and then rolled the proverbial dice.

Even more importantly, the early voting results in North Carolina suggest that Obama will carry that Southern state decisively. According to analyses from North Carolina's political experts, Obama is trouncing Clinton via a new and unanticipated surge in black turnout that was almost certainly triggered by the massive MSM overreaction to the stage-managed appearances of Reverend Wright.

In a nutshell, the Reverend Wright strategy backfired. Polls indicate that the early voting in Indiana is heaviest in counties where Obama has commanding leads. While Indiana is another "open primary" state, and Rush Limbaugh's legions of followers could effect yet another Clinton upset via Operation Chaos, it will not matter.

With a population of nearly nine million, North Carolina is the very last large state to hold its primary this year. If Hillary Clinton had upset Obama in North Carolina, the nomination calculus could have been rewritten. The Clintons muster

When people use harsh hyperbolic language in a forum of ideas, it creates enmity, discord and completely obscures the point one is trying to make; in other words, rather than debating an issue, you tear the person apart thinking you've made a strong argument, but you haven't. That's one of various fallacies people fall prey to when they can't properly express their anger......Tell me about your mother.
