NEXT 2008 | IMMIGRATION

The Rise of a New American Underclass

The real issue is not how many people to let in, but how to help them all fit in.

Comment: One learns a lot about people from comments such as those preceding mine. Some forget that his nation was created by immigrants who were not patriots nor patriotic, but simply runaways from something or someone back home (political, social, religious, cultural and in many cases, criminal. Just ask yourselves about Australia and who created the country we know today--why were the people SENT there and who went voluntarily? Bigots and racists are those who identify "illegal" immigrants with undesirables, criminals, terrorists, and such. They do so because "there are too many of them", mostly indians or a mixture of indians with spaniards, dark skinned, poor, uneducated and don't speak english. Among the objectors are descendants of immigrants whose origin is "white" and mostly from the middle classes.

Comment: It is apparent that the major Presidential candidates either have their heads in the sand or just refuse to listen to the majority of the legal citizens of this country.

All the legitimate polls show that "we the people" want enforcement on our borders, our laws adequately enforced, and no amnesty.

Any supposed "path to citizenship" offered to anyone in this country illegally and has not legally applied for American citizenship "IS AMNESTY".

Allowing those here illegally to remain here is a slap in the face to any and every immigrant that has come or is in the process of legally becoming and American citizen. It also sends the message to potential illegals that if they can just get here, the Americans will buckle under and eventually let them stay here.

Those here illegally are not immigrants. By definition they are "invaders" and should be treated as such.

Enforce our current laws in the workplace, ensure they get no social services, and the illegals will go back to the countries from whence they came.

Anything less encourages more of the same.

Comment: Assimilation????.......desirable but unreal. You can not make American what belongs to a different culture or perhaps to a different world. People don't go there looking for a new identity, they mostly cross the border only to find a job and a decent way to feed their families, they will settle down there and give birth to the new generation of Americans out of need, not because of a patriotic desire.

Comment: Assimilation is not the American governments responsibility, it belongs to the illegal's. Deportation is. Perhaps if we increased the deportations, the newer immigrants might be motivated to assimilate?

Comment: The US government will only take the immigration issue seriously when it is too late and then the administration will start pointing fingers at everybody. France is the best example of what can happen when things get bad. But maybe this too will be the fate of the US.
