My son, Marine Capt. Ryan Steffenhagen, recently returned from Fallujah (safely) is proud of his service there and gratified to note the favoarable developments. He is convinced that, tho there was much incompetence in the initial years of the occupation, history may yet show a worthy outcome. He took great pride in the idea of helping the Iraqi people to live in freedom.

Any and all progess in the Anbar area is good news for our Marines. They did not start out rebuilding and providing necessities for the Iraqi people but trying to stay alive and protect civilians and military alike. I admire the fact that they are doing what they can to get the country back to running on it's own. I will be glad when all of our heroes are back home. My son is completing his 3rd deployment in Fallujah and says things are greatly improved and safer.

It is really cheerful to see the city finally come to peace. Hope all the war in the world can come to an end . Though the war seens to go over, there is still a long way to go in order to make the city steady and recovver.

Is it worth 3,897+ American dead for a stable Iraqi democracy? Ultimately, history is written by the victors. Was it worth 250,000+ American lives to end fascism? Since we won that conflict, the politically correct answer is yes, and anyone who says it wasn't is branded a Jew-hating nut-bag (i.e. Pat Buchanan). Yet the fascist regimes of that time might have gone the way of Spain and other Latin American fascist governments and modernized into democratic western allies, just like the former Soviet block has, and we'd have saved 250,000 American lives. Was it worth 600,000+ American lives to win the Civil War? If you say no, you're marginalized to the fringes (like Ron Paul). But at the time, every other slave-holding nation in the world was fading out slavery - Brazil was the last to end it in the 1880's. Was it really worth 600,000+ American lives to do it twenty years sooner?

If we achieve our goals in Iraq, and I hope we do, then the Iraq war automatically becomes a Just War and the 3,897+ Americans who've died there are patriots who sacrificed themselves for a great cause. If we fail in Iraq and are forced to withdraw, then the history books get to be written by the same folks who wrote the book on Vietnam - It was a failed attempt by American Imperialists to invade a weaker country, and the American servicemen who died there were a bunch of fools who got duped into an Unjust War. Both renditions are flip-sides of the same coin that is reality.

Several years from now, if all of our goals in Iraq and that region have been met, will the folks who were against the war from the outset be branded Al-Qaeda sympathizers? I hope not. But then again, history is written by the victors.

BTW: one month after the 101st pulled out the mess tent of the 82nd was struct by a sucude bomber that killed 19 US Marines. They stuffed Petreaus 101 Airbourne out of Mosul and brought in the 82 Striker Batalion with their Bradly fighting veheciles and demolished the good work that was done by Petreaus and now 5 years later they bring Petreaus back as commander of ground forces. Kinda like the "HAIL MARY PASS" that won the game for BC/

Rep John Boehner R-OH said that the sacrifice of 3,700 men and women was a "SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR OUR POSITION" in the Middle East. Well Jonh it is now 3,897 dead just to build a NATION for defense of OIL and ISREAL.

This is not good news for us Democrats...we need more killing over there, more I.E.D.s or we don't stand a chance for re-election...Harry Reid and Pelosi have failed us, should have got us out of there.
