to meye31: no offence, pls, but that's total BS. Tranquilizers acts in ~10 min, Tanya was mauling a guy at that very second, and she turned to the policemen. Cops shot a 70-yr old man trying to get a ballpen from his pocket, do you think they'd wait till a TIGER approach? Ha!

I'm wandering, some poeple are eager to kill scientists who do exps on rats...Yet. none of them would mind being treated in hospital with all pharmaceutical advance possible if emergency needs. Insanity and hypocracy of Biblical proportions!

Maybe the tiger got out by leapfrogging over the wall on the back of another tiger. When my cats play with each other, sometimes one jumps on top of another, and then the cat on the bottom may jump up with the other cat on top of her. My cats are not declawed, and they only need a nailhold with one claw to pull themselves up. I wonder if the tigers in the zoo were declawed. Will it happen again? Probably, somewhere, because all it will take is a tall tree to topple down into a zoo tiger compound.

If I were forced to live in a cage to amuse and entertain humans all my life I'd be pissed, too.

    GO NATURE!

I agree! Animals kept in zoos is animal cruelty! Humans are the real animals.

It was unfurtunate that a human life was lost, but killiing the tiger was the most stupid thing to do. I am sure zookeepers or guards could have sedated the tiger and put it back int its cage instead of shooting it down. Now that tiger is lost for ever. Protecting and keeping alive animals that are at the brink of extinction is our responsibility since it is humans who are invading their habitats. Killing that tiger is a total loss!!

A bit messed up, sorry, my fault. The tiger killed the cow in that story; but it can chase and kill the moose in winter, and snow in taiga is deep and soft. Very powerful and agile animal.

Regarding SF case: with all due my repect to my "compatriots", Tanya had to be killed: she was about to finish another guy, no time for "traquilizers". Anyway,, if that killed victim taunting her (somehow I got that gutfeeling), it may free the Zoo from paying huge fee to the family, or at elast, to low the restitution. That's why I expect they'l hide it..

No one should be supprised at this result. If the tiger got out, especially a 600 pound female, she will kill and yes, quite likely eat a human. We are prey to this large carniverous cat. Hopefully, this is just a horrible mistake in either design of the habitat or horrible human error. If she was released, it is a homicide investigation. What in the world is this taunting speculation? This is irrelavant. You do not need to taunt a big cat to have her want to eat you. Friendly jungle creatures or only in Tarzan movies. This is a mature female Siberian tiger whose whole being is an efficient killing machine.

Maybe the tiger got out by leap frogging over the back of another tiger that was also leaping. When my cats play with each other, sometimes they leap on top of each other. Cats usually try to find the highest point to be.

Once the Siberian killed, he/she'll kill again. The rule of thumb.

I saw The Ruller of Taiga (Siberian forest), a 700+-pound male once in wild. Got sober instantly, almost peed my pants considering myself no coward. I would have had no chance had he decided to chase me in deep snow: easily ctaches the moose despite its "snow-board" hoofs.. It is a well documented encouter: a tiger chased a young cow (~400 pound), killed her instantly, and leaped over a 10-foot fence WITH the prey in his jaws. Agree, Tatiana was a female, raised in Zoo, not really a wild cat, but if that poor boy tuanted her, that'd changed the equation totally.

I saw the Siberian one time in wild in woods (Tiger Woods, so to speak ;-). A 700 pound male, The God of Taiga. I got sober instantly and almost pissed my pants, consider myslef no coward. I had no chance if he decided to chase me. The Siberian can catch a moose on deep snow, kill it in 10 sec, and leap over a 10-foot fence WITH the prey in his jaws (documented encounter). Agree, Tatiana was a female, raised in a Zoo, not a "true" wild cat, but if that poor boy taunted her, then it's a different equation.

Please realize that people defending the tiger are not celebrating the death of the human . This is not about tiger's v/s human life. This is about human us crossing boundaries to use natures ways for our means: digging oil, chopping trees and caging animals. The consequences are our responsibility. Unfortunately the tiger got the worst end of the deal- first being caged and then killed.

Well we are all animals and if you kill someone you should die yourself. Tiger put down because of killing kid. People/humans kill everyday lets put them down for they are animals jest like the tiger. I do want to know where were the zoos rifle team? Why did the police have to kill the tiger? Wow, my zoo has a better system if something like this ever happens. For a big zoo they need to work on how to handle something like this.

The cops had to do what they did... as I understand that the tiger was standing over a person that it was mauling before it came towards them. Tranquilizers would not work fast enough.

Tigers attack.. No kidding. That is what they are meant to do, not live in cages. Man is there enemy. My heart goes out to the poor man who was killed but my heart is also hurting for this poor creature. I understand that yes it has had the "taste of blood" but I don't think they should have killed it. They should have tranquailized it, then moved it to a different zoo. Seems this zoo has some problems that need to be fixed. The other tigers need to find different homes for now. This wasn't the tigers nor the man's fault. I am sorry for both

I too love all animals; however, I find it very sad that some of these comments are more upset over the tiger's death than the boy's. Yes it is the tiger's instinct to attack. They are wild animals. If they had a tranquilzer gun, yes they should have used it. However, it does not make the cops cowards because they shot the tiger. It does not mean they have no regard for the tiger's life. The cops first instinct is to protect their lives and the people they are suppose to protect. If any of you were there with your family and a tiger was attacking you and your family, would you still be so worried about the tiger's life?

It's a very, very tragic incident, but not that surprising. As has already been said, tigers are wild animals and it doesn't seem so far out of the realm of possibility that they could jump the moat/fence, especially if they were provoked in some way. That being said, my sympathies go out to the families of the victims, the staff at the zoo and anyone else involved.

    Dear ISHL,
"Stupid, worthless, filthy" seem to be your words of choice in your limited vocabulary... you need to "gimmee a break" (as you so eloquently stated it)... you talk out of both sides of your mouth... you my friend are clueless... and obviously live in your own little silly world, with your own little silly ideas... people like you scare me!!
