For those who feel the tigers should not be kept in the zoo...how do you suggest we ensure the survival of their species? They are being hunted wtih reckless abandon for body parts in their native lands. We need to hear alternate solutions before we throw out the main breeding programs that we have.

Zoos are trying to protect these species, and the SF Zoo (which is a fine zoo) failed on this one. We'll learn and do better.

sorry folks - I meant what "were" these individuals doing to provoke the attack? :)

The 20 foot deep moat is meant to prevent the tiger from leaping onto and scaling the adjacent wall. It's much more difficult to jump/leap into the air when you're in water than if you were on solid ground.

I've had it with the SF Zoo. I lived in San Francisco until last month and had refused to go to the Zoo since the early 1990s, when I felt that something was wrong with the Elephant exhibit. It took years for the authorities to recognize the neglect and take the elephants from the zoo. Yes, people taunt the animals. I had a friend who used to take a banana to eat in front of the goriila exhibit, because that always cause the gorillas to beg. 365 days! Give the animals rest.

This story is far from surprising. While I, myself, enjoy going to a zoo from time to time, I am also a very firm believer that predatory animals, such as tigers and lions, should not be bred in captivity and therefore, should not be kept in a zoo. These animals are predators, like the article stated, by nature. Their aggressive behavior is prominent and completely unpredictable, whether they are kept in a zoo or are born in their natrual environment. I have always believed that tigers can become even more predictable when being forced into captivity because it is completely aberrant. These are wild animals and need to be in nature where they belong - not in an artificial environment or a cage... hello? What happened to the evolution of natural selection? Anyone? These animals are being forced into captivity. Therefore, we as a society, are preventing them to do what comes natural. It is no wonder why "tigers attack" in these situations. Get them out of the damn zoo!!!!!

it means that the cat can't jump straight up the wall. Because you can't jump straight up 18 feet out of water...usually. Even if you are a tiger.

Why Tigers Attack? Duh, because thats what they do; its part of their nature. A better question is why the heck was the Zoo opened on X-Mas day? And as Briscoe notes, moats are not a protection. These guys need to go to the San Diego Zooo for some tips.

Uh, what does a twenty foor moat mean to a tiger? They love to swim. They are the only cat that wil go in the water for a recreational swim. A moat is about as useful in stopping a tiger as throwing a newspaper over a bonfire to put it out.
