What About the Nukes?

We need not worry about securing the nukes in Pakistan. Al Qeada and it???s cronies are not looking at stealing the nukes. They have already initiated the process to steal the state itself with all the booty. Of course, moving a few nukes from the present government control to their control will be a part of their short strategy befor the state comes under their total control. Pakistan is ripe for a steal. I would not be surprised if within the next year or so, Mush becomes history, the modernist secular middle class shot and bombed into silence and half the Paki army deserting and putting their lots with the Mullahs. That is when the world will be shitting in their pants???. US will have to pay a very heavy price for creating / using Mujahedins as state policy. And the second mistake - sleeping with the enemy ??? Pakistan a key ally BAH!!

With nuclear weapons the key issue is that there is no military solution to the problem by itself. Politically through dialogue the issue of nuclear weapons has to be controlled not just through military means.
If we supress nations and allow only small amounts of enrichment this will only cause resentment. Should countrise be able to join the NPT. The answer is yes if it is for peaceful purposes say to enrich uranium for electricity or research. To make plutonium for a bomb means enriching to 90% and this is why the world has cheques and balances in the system. The key question is what is a rogue state as the US wants rogue states restricted. Also geographically certain areas are of concern and then there are tests of dirty bombs. Russias pledge to provide Iran with enriched uranium is an example of cooperation. However in the long term I feel Iran will want to enrich its own uranium as transferring enriched yellowcake is complex. In summary every country can enrich for peaceful purposes but given the issues discussed the present model of rogue states and goegraphical phobia more dialogue is needed so more trust can be built in the system.

All talk about the nukes finding their way into religious fundamentalists' hands is not just a matter of conjecture or vague speculation. I have the sneaking feeling that it has already happened and al-Qaeda is just waiting for the most opportune moment to strike. A preemptive strike against Pakistan is not necessarily a shocking alternative. This cauldron of terror needs to be consigned to the dustbin of history forever.

First, you seem to think land was occupied by Israel from the "Palestinians" - tell me WHEN in history it belonged to Palestinians and I will send you a free ticket to Hawaii as reward. (Most Arabs CAME from neigbouring areas because of economic activity by immigrating Jews). The very WORD "Palestinians" refers to Arabs ONLY since the mid 1900s !

About 20 % of the Israeli population are Muslim Arabs (called "Israeli Arabs" to distinguish them from Palestinian Arabs) and have equal rights. So there's no problem with "religious doctrine" towards them. But If you mean towards PALESTINIAN (Muslim) Arabs in the West Bank then yes, right-wing "Jewish extremists" do settle on that UNINHABITED ("occupied") land. In you (and not just your) view they are responsible for all the World's evil ? Responsible even if Islamists soon wield Pakistan's nuclear weapons !? :-)

In Palestinian-controlled Gaza not a SINGLE JEW is allowed to live in. He would be killed "within half an hour" (as a taxi driver whom I asked how long we would survive if we entered Gaza told me. Some Israelis have already been LYNCHED there.) They try to murder literally EVER SINGLE JEW they can, and when they succeed they are seen by most Palestinians as HEROES. (When an Israeli soldier - very rarely - kills a [NON-terrorist] Palestinian he is TRIED IN COURT!) A neutral (Norwegian) polls says that a MAJORITY (c. 60 %) of Palestinians in Gaza support terrorism (not just against Israel but, interestingly, against the West in general !). Unique, I think, in history: a MAJORITY of a people - supports what is clearly evil!

You, like many others do not understand the core of the problem: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is NOT about parts of territory ! If so it would have been resolved long ago! At Camp David Arafat was offered 98 % of the disputed ("occupied") land PLUS 2 % of Israel proper (to compensate for the Jewish settlements in the West Bank), but he refused out of hand.

The ONLY reason why the Israeli-Palestinian is not solvable is because Islamists believe their RELIGION demands that ALL of Israel be theirs! Because Muhammed visited it on a horse IN A VISION (or dream) ! Later the Al Aksa Mosque was built on that spot.

The issue of religious fanaticism is different from the Palestinian/Israeli issue or that matter WW II. American foreign policy has been myopic at times (allowing Pakistan to have nuclear wepons because India has it was especially stupid) especially now. Instead of securing Afghanistan and develop it economically our president decided to settle old family scores and invade Iraq - diverting badly needed resources to this war.
In the interim, Israel continues to build settlements in the occupied territory. Note I have nothing against Israel existing or having security - I do have a problem with double talk and using religious doctrine to decide who lives on what land. this is the other side of the religious fanaticism coin.

What we should do is get a dictator in power in Iraq, get the hell out - deal with the Taliban/Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and demand serious discussions about establishing the two state solution including either separating Jerusalem or putting it under UN control. If this is refused we in the US needs to disengage politically and divert our tax dollars to domestic issues.
We are getting dragged into tribal wars that predate the founding of the US - and confusing this with Islamic fundamentalism.

Islamic (or any religious) fundamentalism has given nothing to its people, and concequently is easily defeated - but we must stop confusing it with Iraq, Palestine, Israel or Nazis if we are to free ourselves from such stupidity.

In WW II the world Nazism was combatted WITHOUT hearing accusations of being of "Germanophobes!"
