Arizona gets tough on employers to solve its immigration problem.
The only ones who should feel beseiged and rightly so,are the ones who break the law.
this law only levels the playing field, i wanted to work or start a business in mexico. what legal loopholes would i have to climb throough
As an employer I believe that the responsibility for registering anyone who may not have verifyable documentation should be placed on the company willing to employ that individual. If a company is willing to hire someone who may hold the status of "illegal" then they should have a responsibility to register that individual on a Federal Data Base that tracks the movement of these individuals. This will allow these "illegal" immigrants the ability to establish themselves here in the US and maintain gainful employment. It is in my opinion that this may even increase an individuals desire to pursue possible citizenship since they are already "in the system". This will require them to pay taxes that they normally may avoid paying, file taxes and be tracked by an ID card that will be provided by their original employer.
This will not be the solution for securing our borders but it will give us the necessary work force to remain globally competative and assist our country in tracking those who do enter illegally. I don't know the solution to our countries dilema, but I do know that if we didn't have the availability of this work force in our economy it would hit us much harder than the naysayers may think. Thank you for letting me share!
As an employer I believe that the responsibility of tracking the accessability of illegals should be held our responsibility. For those companies who find value in utilizing a certain skill level of employee (which may include those with unconfirmable documentation) that employer will be required under a Federal Goverment program to register that employee in a Federal tracking data base which will give them a temporary work ID and will allow the government to track this individual while working in our country. This will also require them to file taxes and become a productive part of our society whether their status be a citizen or not. Any employer found employing an individual who is not registered in this program will be subject to Federal penalties.
It is really very simple. It will eliminate unemployment shortages and may even affect the wage rate in a positive manner. But without these types of workers in America we will only price ourselves out of the world market and then there will be a whole new reason for those naysayers to complain. But if we don't do something quick it is only going to continue to become more difficult to control and those who need the work most are going to be the ones who suffer the greatest. Thanks for letting me share...
This whole "undocumented immigrant" issue is just an excuse to discriminate against the most recent ethnic group to enter the United States. We did it before to the Italians, the Irish and so forth, and I can remember my German grandmother talking about being similarly victimized. (The excuse then was the Germans were the bad guys in World Wars I and II.) BTW "We" is defined as those Americans who can trace their American lineage back a generation or two.
Unfortunately, we will soon have to face the fact that we need these "undocumented immigrants" at least as much as they need us. Hopefully, we will have the grace to put our snobbery behind us and just remove the word "undocumented" from the phrase and go from there.
Now if we fail to recognize this fact, and continue with our snobbery, we risk pushing ourselves ever near to recession. Immigrants accept the kind of jobs you and I and our daughters and sons won't accept. From the comfort of my car, I see them doing hard labor in all kinds of weather. They should at least get minimum wage. They take their earnings and spend them in the communities in which they live. They send some back home. They try to bring families over or they build families here. They buy homes, cars, TVs, they educate their children, and want them to have a better life than they had. Just like our parents. This drives communities and economies. But the danger here is we are talking about chasing away millions of economic drivers at a time our economy is not thriving. It makes no sense.
It is true that all Americans (Even Native Americans if you go back far enough) are imigrants or children of immigrants.. This is true of most countries in the world. Very few countries are now populated by the very first people that lived there. However at some point immigration must be controled by the current goverment. I don't think there is any country in the world that allows people to enter their country with some type check or applicaton. Most countries make it very difficult to immigrate and then be allowed to work. If you think that America is unkind to immigrants do some research on the treatment of illeagal immigrants. Trust me compared to that coming to America is like being greeted at the door with milk and cookies. There is nothing wrong with allowing people to immigrate. They just need to follow the law. The immigrants themselves would benefit. It would be more difficult for employers to take advantage of them and wage would more than likely improve. It would also help them to become integrated in mainstream society. They would not feel the need to aovid strangers in fear of deportation.
The issue of illeagal immigrants only taking jobs that Americans don't wany is completly false. I am an electrician, I have been constructtion for about 20 years. I promise there are plenty of people that would be happy to paint, hang and finish drywal, frame walls, pour concrete and more. There are even illeagal immigrants that work in the more skilled trades plumbing, electrical and HVAC. I have personally seen wages for all these trades erode over the years How many small landscapers have been driven out of business? These are small busimen living their dream on operating their own business. They are unable to make a living wage because the low wages that some will work for.
If this country really needs more workers market forces push congress to act. Ignoring the law is not the answer. This way allows all kinds of people into the country good and bad. The vast majority of people entering this country are good people looking for a better life. I wish them all the best. However if we don't control immigration many people that come are not good people. Unfortunally enough of this sort get through and give all immigrants a bsd reputation. Really in the long run enforcment of immigration law in best for both sices of this debate.
Your logic is unfounded. While it is a true that illegal immigrants work for cheap the cost to the country as a whole is a lot more. We pay a far greater price in health care costs from illegals without insurance using emergency rooms and the cost of educating the children of illegals in public schools. Increased crime is also a huge cost. I just heard a LA latino gang is trying to ethnically cleanse the city by targeting african americans. You should look at the whole picture not just the view you see from the comfort of your car.
I do concur with the argument made by morbie5. What we should not forget is undocumented aliens are law breakers. They are in this country illigally; the business owners hiring those people are also law breakers. I also do not agree with your point of the country falling into another recession because of this reason. Every year millions and millions of people from other countries are waiting, trying to come to this country by legal means. Reduce the back log and have them come here quickly. They will take those jobs vacated by the illigal aliens. Let legal aliens work and pay tax, put something back into the country, instead of sending money back to wherever.
Did your grand-parents become american citizens or just live here legally. I am a first generation american and one of my parents became a citizen and the other did not, although he did get a SS-NUMBER and pay his tax's. I believe this problem we are dealing with is much different than our parents or grang-parents. I have now problem with anyone wanting to become an american , just do it.
I was in a hurry writing this excuss my spelling errors
It's high time that American need to look at ourselve in the mirror and confront with the simple yet hard question about illegal immigration. Do we wnat their cheap labor or not?? If we do, then shut up and live with it. If we don't need their cheap labor then start behaving like any sovereign nation. It's really very easy.
Arizona has the political courage to solve the illegal problem once and for all. The un-intended consequence is the impact on the economy --- but that will be d different issue to be resolved.
I really don't know what to think anymore. I have lived in Arizona 23 years and the problem was here when I arrived. No one has really done much about it until a few years ago. I have seen Phoenix grow from a city with a lot of characture, pride, and sense of stability. The illegal has run us down, ruined our deserts, taken advantage of our already depleted social services, and whether anyone wants to admit it or not, increased the violence and crime.
No matter who we elect to take care of this situation, somehow their hands are always tied and cannot take care of business. We are so afraid that we might be accused of profileing and maybe infringing on someone's rights, that we can't check to see if anyone is here illegally. I do admit that I am predjudice. Only to the ones that are illegal. I am not because of race. Do I think profileling wrong? NO!! I have a cattle ranch and am losing calves to wild dogs. There are 100 dogs and 90% of them are brown dogs. The other 10% are other colors. Could I feel comfortable to believe that the destruction is being done by the 90% brown dogs? YES!! I will be going after the brown dogs.
It is so sad that I have children making a living in Alaska, raising my grandchildren, wanting to move here to be closer to us and I have to beg them to stay away as I do not want my grandchildren around the type of society that we have let Phoenix and the surrounding areas become. So sad. I would like to say "Wake up America" like so many people have, but as much as I hate to say it, "It's too late". I took years to get where we are, and it will take double the time to get it changed if it can be changed.
All of my family including myself going back 6 generations have served out country in the military and went through many wars. I lost my father, two uncles, do to the wars. So many of our Americans have paid a price we were proud to pay. Does anyone really care about the citizens, leagal Americans? I don't think so. We care much more about hurting someone elses feeling, the illegals.
For all of America...Be legal, not illegal. Not one of us in America,is American, per, say. People came over from other countries, years ago, just like all the ilegals, here now..Decide. we understand you.Decide.America or your own country. Decide.
averilg31@hotmail.com Jan.4,2008 I am 76 years old. I was born in England. I have been an American citizen since 1954. I have one daughter, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. What has happened? When we came to America, we had to sign in at the Post-office, no matter where we were in America., till we became citizens, of this lovely country. No matter who you were, what country, you came from,We all had to sign-in. The people that came from countries, that did not speak american, Went to night-school, to learn, not just to speak american but, to put their knowledge of their perticular schooling into american schooling. You are talking about Doctors, and such,,people who were better off than we were, people who wanted to know their new country, I am talking about adults, not children. (my time, we came to America on ships) not first class, but by steerage, or the cheapest way to come. Do you love America? or do you just want to make money for yourselves and family, you left behind? You make the decission. ( I probably have spelled that last word ,incorrectly). THe word is decide.THAT IS WHAT ALL OF US HAD TO DO .and continue to as long as we all shall live. It is an Honor to live here. You can become whatever you want to be. You can associate with all the different nationalities, different colors, different religions. Everyone has a storyof how they came, what
america, has done for them. We are Proud to be Americans. The people that walk across the Borders, Not just from Mexico or Canada. Want the same thing as we do...But,for one thing, you do not want to do it legally, You cannot ever become an American citizen, and that is the sad part. Decide, Decide. You are missing out of all the nice things in America. I do feel sorry for you, for that reason. All I can say, is Adios,good-by, You are the lost ones. sad, sad.
Good for Arizona!! I don't have a problem with immigrants. My mother is an immigrant. She came here legally and learned English. She is a tax paying citizen. Illegal Immigrants get free medical care, welfare and other aid at the tax payer???s expense, without ever contributing to their share of taxes. Yet Citizens like my mother who is disabled, cannot get the health care and dental care she desperately needs. As a result she has a poor quality life and mostly likely a shorten life span. This isn't about rights. This is about obeying the laws of the Land. We are required to obey and respect the laws of the land in other nations when we visit or live in other countries. Immigrants need to extend the same courtesy to us. To live here is a privilege not a right. Come Legally!!!
THIS IS MY COUNTRY!
And, because I make this statement
DOES NOT mean I'm against immigration!!!
YOU ARE WELCOME HERE IN MY COUNTRY.
Welcome to come through like everyone else has.
Get a sponsor!
Get a place to lay your head!
Get a job!
Live by OUR rules!
Pay YOUR taxes!
And
LEARN THE LANGUAGE LIKE ALL OTHER
IMMIGRANTS HAVE IN THE PAST!!!
AND PLEASE DON'T DEMAND THAT WE HAND OVER OUR
LIFETIME SAVINGS OF SOCIAL SECURITY FUNDS TO YOU
TO MAKE UP FOR ''YOUR'' LOSSES.

What a shame! Such is life. I feel disappointed and sad... I've got some kind of mixed feelings. No hard feelings, anyway.
I've read this article, and words don't come easy to me. About 7 years ago I almost became part of the immigration stats which Mexican are part of. I wanted to live the American Dream, and I was supposed to go to Arizona. However, as an unemployed professional in Mexico I could manage to get a job in my country and forget about dreaming and fleeing the country.
I think the U.S. government and its Mexican counterpart can work cooperatively and create up-to-date and top-level immigration strategies and programs, but of course as long as these go hand in hand with NGOs, law schools, universities and individuals interested in, firstly, improving the quality of life for millions of illegal latino workers that make The U.S. a model country and economy worldwide, and secondly, supporting regional schools and NGOs inside Mexico and The U.S. I truly believe that American and Mexican politicians should come closer to people in their countries and work together, for example, as a teacher, this year I am going to work with university students doing majors in Regional/Social Development Studies, I'll be teaching English Reading Comprehension, and through my teaching they will be facing to texts related to Social Studies and of course, the American Culture and Society, my students really need to understand and value its own Mexican culture as well as global cultures, and try to create regional programs which in some extent could help create new ideal jobs for the homeless and the unemployed and try to stop migration to The U.S. from their communities. I think it will be great.
Thank you very much.

Talk about ignorance...... boy and America is suppose to be the most sophisticated, highly educated and powerful country in the world... I ask myself why are we blinded by so much hate and ignorance ... If this country can go over thousands of miles to remove a government and impose another one like we have done in Iraq... I just think to myself....Has anybody notice here that the problem with immigration does not lie with the people crossing over..... Most of the people are crossing over because they can??t find jobs in their home country...
Isn??t that the same reason why most of the people who now call themselves patriotic Americans originally left their home country for.... most of who now call themselves Americans originally left their home country because of political and economical instability.. the same reasons why most of the now so call illegal immigrants are leaving their home country to come to America.....I am a Mexican American who would defend this country to my last breath but I am fed up with all this ignorance and racism against illegal immigrants especially when they mention the word Mexicans because every time anybody talks about illegal migration they mention Mexico as if it were the only country exporting immigrants... If our government can go over thousands of miles to remove other governments shouldn??t we be pressuring our government to start pressuring the Mexican government and any other government to get a grip and start providing for their own people... ISN??T THAT THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM..... I can assure you that my parents would have never left Mexico if they have had a way to make a decent living there.... they didn??t come to America because they wanted to.....they came to America because they saw it as their last hope where they could make a decent living... SO TO ALL OF YOU, HIGHLY EDUCATED AMERICANS, WHO KNOW IT ALL , START SHOWING THAT YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT??S GOING ON WHEN IT COMES TO TALKING ABOUT THE ILLEGAL MIGRATION PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY.....
I AM READING ALL THESE RASCIST IGNORANT COMMENTS ABOUT HOW FED UP "AMERICANS" ARE WITH THE "ILLEGALS" IN THIS NATION! AND IT BREAKS MY HEART! GET MAD ABOUT ALL THE ILLEGALS,NOT JUST THE MEXICANS,THEIR ARE OTHER ILLEGALS COMING IN THRU MEXICO FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD,OR DID'NT ANYONE HERE TAKE GEOGRAPHY???? MY GOODNESS,GIVE ME A BREAK,YOU ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS! EITHER BY GRANDMA OR GRANDPA. I AM A 3RD GENERATION AMERICAN, A PROUD REPUBLICAN AND A CHRISTIAN!
I PRAY FOR TOLERANCE AND LEGAL METHODS FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO LIVE THE "AMERICAN" DREAM, WHICH IS TO ME A NIGHTMARE WITH ALL THESE RASCIST IGNORANT "AMERICANS" OPINIONS.
Does your heart break for your fellow Americans that can't make a living wage because illegals have driven down wages? Does it break for Americans that become victims of violence by gangs like MS13? Does it break for all the broken American lives destroyed by the drugs these illegals bring into the country? For the Americans that cant get decent health care because illegals use the Emergency Room as their free clinic? For...
Does your hear break for your fellow Americans that are victims of violence by MS13 gangs? Does it break for Americans that can't obtain health care because illegals use the Emergency Room as their very own free medical clinic? Does it break for the millions of American children that won't get a decent education? Does it break for Americans that won't make a living wage because illegals have driven down wages? Does it

Good for the fence that seperates the USA and Mexico, not because of the Mexicans, but because of all the criminal garbage that try passing thru there. Also. it protects the USA from terrorists posing as hispanics and also it protects us from criminals, and gangs. I feel sorry for the hard working descent working illegal immigrant who come here to work and earn an honest living. Living the American has now become a nightmare because of all these laws trying to protect us,is now hurting the good descent people who come here to work. I notice on a regular basis that "America" forgets that this nation was created First by the Natives and then by Immigrants, who then bought in innocent African slaves!?!
God Bless America! and I pray that this nation will return to it's roots, One Nation Under God!
We have the same problems here in the UK - and we're an island!!! Since 2004 our lousy government have opened the borders to many of the countries from the poorer European states and the result is that local people, including students and those who wish to get temporary work, are unable to find work. You've got to hand it to the Japanese and Singaporeans. They look after their own.
As a painter by trade I, along with every other construction worker in Arizona, can attest to the lie propagated by Bush and others that illegals work the jobs Americans don't want. They have taken over all the trades by working dirt cheap for under the table wages. They don't pay taxes or social security on that money but they take full advantage of our free public schools, food assistance programs and hospital emergency rooms. They all need to go back home and enter legally on a work visa but not to stay.
Business has been and will continue to be the biggest obstacle to immigration reform. They hire illegals because they work for less, require no benefits, and can be terminated at will. They break the law with impunity by controlling politicians with contributions and weak rhetoric about how America is a land of immigrants.
SEND ALL THE ILLEGAL MEXICANS BACK TO MEXICO .. THEY ARE ALL LAWBREAKERS, DRUG SMUGGLERS AND GANG BANGERS. THEY BRING DOWN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND ARE A HEAVY ON OUR ECONOMY .. THEY ARE POOR AND UNEDUCATED .. WE NEED TO FOCUS ON ONLY LETTING IN IMMIGRANTS THAT ARE EDUCATED AND PRODUCTIVE . PEOPLE THAT WILL HELP OUR ECONOMY LIKE DOCTORS, ENGINEERS, AND SCIENTISTS .. BETTER YET LETS PUT A FREEZE ON IMMIGRATION BOTH LEGAL AND ILLEGAL ALTOGETHER .. DON'T WE HAVE ENOUGH IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY AS IT IS .. ??
It's about time someone started the corrective actions needed to fix this issue. I can't wait for the tipping point when most states right the wrongs of these illegal activities. I feel for legal business owners who cater to the illegals like Ms. Arredondo, but I bet similary changes took place when Mayor Giuliani started cleaning up commercial sex in New York.
