Comment: Despite the fact that McCain is a war hero he has spent his career as a legislator. A whole life spent talkign without much action. Romney has shown through his leadership style that he is a doer. He has continually stood up and solved problems and actually made things happen. He is the type of leadership this country needs right now.

Comment: McCain is a war hero, but on immigration he has flopped, Romney has a clearer track record of being able to make and enforce decisions that cleaned up messes like the 2002 winter Olympics Romney has been a doer that has made things happen, that's what our country needs. McCain has been a legislator, talk a lot and no action.

Comment: Clearly a slanted story. McCain is not actually a bad guy, but lets face the fact that he cannot win the General Election...and Romney is the only GOP candidate who can. So get over it!

Comment: This artical is the "MALARKEY". McCain is unelectable first off. His record is so litered with anti conservative stands of his....why would we even trust him in the White House? The Immigration/Amnesty bill McCain co-authored with an idiot, leftest Democrate, was ran out of town it was so bad....thats the truth if you care to write about it. The THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS" in penalties you are talking about was a $2,000.00 fine, a work pass which was virtally forever, and yes...McCain did try to include Social Security benefits for All!!! He just didn't have the guts to put it in writing. This quote of yours from Romney was not a statement of total support of McCains mess of a bill, but a reasonable first responce to a general question. I hope you liberal media types are not successful in your attempt to alter the outcome of our, the Republican, contest.. Try just doing your jobs, and stop taking yourselves so seriously. No one is buying your STUFF anymore. We have all learn how to read and turn on a computer. You want respect, than treat us, the poor people who have to read your personal points of view, which you keep trying to dump on us as NEWS! Stop wasting our time..just give us the truth, not your version of it.

Comment: News agencies like Newsweek have attacked Mitt Romney with more attack ads than Romney could ever send McCain's way. They've been doing it since he entered the campaign. Is it because of his religion, or is it because he is feared by democrats?

  • Posted By: Itrustno1 @ 12/31/2007 7:45:37 PM

Comment: The McCains bill was a bad one....bottom line. That is way no one could pass it. McCain himself says he learn form the over 80% negative citizen rejection of it. The "THOUSANDS" of dollars you speak of is the "MALARkey". It was a $2,000.00 fee, which no one could even imagine a way of collecting. It was an Amnesty any way you cut it. Oh, and no one wanted it, not even the majority of Demorates. McCain did sign on to the idea of providing Social Security benefits to illegals...that is a fact. You liberal media types are so scared of Romney that you are willing to put down your mantal of truth and fair reporting to try and effect the Republican race by helping to eliminate conservatives that can win in 2008. Romney is going to win, Brooks, you need to just give up writing this stuff and join Hillarys election team up front. Sorry, but we Americans aren't cattle after all, we see right through you.

Comment: I'd call McCain's plan and bill amnesty. I would say McCain is soft on immigration. Fence is the first step, I agree with McCain there, but he is obviously looking out for the hispanic vote and for the industries that employ illegals. I doubt he would ever get around to kicking them out. Its about economics, I work for a hospital, we write off SO much for illegals. If they were citizens we could charge the government, but we pay for it one way or another and I'd rather simply not pay for it. Our schools are crowded with Hispanic kids who can't speak English very well consuming our education resources at higher rates. We create government jobs and pay higher wage differentials for workers who can speak Spanish. These jobs are primarily filled with citizen children of illegal immigrants. We need to stop illegal immigration, it hurts us in higher taxes, worse government service and young people can't get the "good" blue collar jobs because the are increasingly dominated by immigrants.

Comment: McCain was a co-sponsor of the immigration reform bill that true American Patriots rallied and shut down the \senate switchboard over. It has as much chance of succeeding as the Bush/Kennedy education joke. Newsweek is so liberal, I sure do not trust it as a source. Mike Wallace told me the truth about Newsweek!

Comment: Joe Smith sounds like a "man" who could use some amnesty himself, come on people give the guy a break, this is how people are turned in to serial killers..., listen how angry he is. -Mateo

    Comment: The author lies.

John McCain cast the deciding Senate vote to grant Social Security payments to illegal aliens.....when they are granted citizenship.

McCain then slithered into a secret meeting in the middle of the night with 9 other pro amnesty sneaky Senators. Together they gave birth to the Kennedy-McCain Amnesty Bill. The bill was rushed to a vote before anyone (including the author) could understand it. It would have cost the taxpayers $2 trillion. The thousands of dollars in fines and penalties is correct but the author fails to mention two things:
    1. McCains bill reduced existing fines and penalties by thousands of dollars.
    2. McCains bill provided interest-free time payments of up to seven years for those "fines".
ANYONE COULD HAVE BOUGHT U.S. CITIZENSHIP FOR $4O A MONTH.
Of course, they also had to state that they did not belong to a gang.
NEWSWEEK should be ashamed for publishing the author's misleading, dishonest tripe.

  • Posted By: hughgous @ 12/30/2007 4:50:11 PM

Comment: Anybody that reads this article and believes it is up in the night. This article has to be the mos biased article I have seen yet on any candidate. First the writer didn't do his own research (probably found his false info from a blog or other unreliable liberal site.) McCain defends the social security issue by saying that it can't be done because the law doesn't allow it. No duh, sherlok, but the bill that you tried to pass would have over turned that law we have not. If you want to know who is telling the truth go read the bill.

  • Posted By: hughgous @ 12/30/2007 4:45:46 PM

Comment: This is the biggest bias on any site I have seen so far.

  • Posted By: CorbinB2 @ 12/30/2007 3:23:02 PM

Comment: The closer you get to an actual election, more and more actual truths come out. What someone says they did and the impact it had are completely different things and trying to make what they say they did true is not going to fool anybody. I'm really surprised Romney is still trying this old school politics tactic to try and fool the voters.

Huckabee and Romney are both going to fall away after the first or second primary anyway, so I guess it's all a moot point now.

  • Posted By: luigi837 @ 12/30/2007 10:49:15 AM

Comment: Mitt Romney better check his speech twice before he open his mouth about h the illegals getting social security which is untrue ... they don't get any while coming here illegally...

  • Posted By: TheMittWitt @ 12/30/2007 9:53:03 AM

Comment: When Mitt Romney's record of economic failure as governor is exposed he's going to have bigger problems. MA was 49 out of 50 in job creation whie he was governor. He also raised every state fee and neglected infrastructure maintenance to help his "no new taxes" claim. Run, don't walk away from this empty suit.

Comment: It appears that a number of these writers did not actually read the immigration bill or the tax law in Massachusetts. Before one makes disparaging remarks regarding another character and veracity, I recommend that one first find out the actual facts.
The immigration bill in question does not provide for Social Security benefits for illegal aliens. The minor cut in taxes in Massachusetts benefitted only a handful of business, not the everyday person.

Do your research before you mouth off and show your ignorance.

  • Posted By: gunhildamatilda @ 12/29/2007 5:43:17 PM

Comment: Check your facts Brooks Jackson! Your comments are just comments and misleading! You don't represent the facts. It was widely caimed that the immigration bill was in fact "amnisty," Your comments about Govenor Romney's tax cuts in Massechusetts is your opinion and interpretation. I believe your view is biased and misleading.

You claim to state facts when you are only being misleading with your opinions. I think we can classify you as "holier that thou!"

    Comment: More Newsweek Malarky

Mitt Romney, regardless of the liberal media and anti-mormon distortions is by far the most qualified candidate for President of the United States. So, he cut back on HIV/AIDS help in Massachussetts. That's exactly what needed to happen! If people don't want HIV/AIDS, maybe they should stop living in illicit, lewd, homosexual relationships. I know it may be seem like too much to ask people to actually govern themselves, instead of waiting for the government to govern their lives for them.
With all due respect, John McCain is a good man, but he is simply not presidential material. He's good for some war stories, tough talk, and pushing his agenda in the Senate. Besides that, keep him on the sidelines. Mike Huckabee? Keep him behind the pulpit, preaching. He doesn't belong in the White House. Fred Thompson? Yes, he's got some snappy one-liners, but so does my grandpa, and I would never vote for him for president. Rudy Guiliani? He can't even govern his own home and family right, so why would anyone want him in office?
Now, to the Democrats....Obama? If you're in favor of hugging Al-Queda, and waving white flags at the Iranians, and bringing peace and joy and lollipops to everyone in exchange for the buzz word "change", then cast your vote for him. Hillary? If you want a soulless, corruptible, sold-out, owned-by-special-interests, makes-the-devil-himself-sweat kind of person in the office, then cast your vote.
In conclusion: Vote for the only man who has actually created a turnaround in organizations, and got things done and made things happen and not just talked about it (and smiled for the camera)....MITT ROMNEY IN 2008!!!!!!!!!

Comment: Seems Newsweek is twisting to words. The McCain's intent is the point. McCain clearly supported amnesty just as stated. Clearly McCain wanted SS for the illegals. When you have to use the dictionary to support your argument your case is very weak. Recall the famous quote "it depends upon what the maening of the word 'is' is"

    • Posted By: JoeSmithInTheUSofA @ 12/31/2007 10:35:32

      Comment: Wow. You're astonishing.
"Clearly McCain supported amnesty. Clearly McCain wanted social security for the illegals. Clearly."

The rationale for these "obvious" truths? "The man on the television said so, so obviously its true!"

Your ignorance and gullibility are astounding.
(Sorry if you need to use a dictionary to figure out what I just said.)

Comment: Get a life, Kin. You're obviously bitter towards the Mormon Church; they probably kicked you out. Mormons are good people, I know several whom I would vote for any day of the week. As for your "all mormons are white collar criminals" allegation...it's laughable. Perhaps you were dissappointed that one of the multi-level marketing companies tried there didn't work for you, and you ended up with a whole bunch of nu-skin products? Utah has a disproportionate amount of white collar crime because they have an exceptionally low level of violent crime. Furthermore, if there is a failed scam, it's a good bet that it will take in LDS people as victims if it originated in Utah. Your post only proves who the bigot is. Go bleach your robe and hood so you'll be ready for the cross-burning in the yard this weekend.

  • Posted By: Mitt Romney's Kin @ 12/29/2007 5:14:33 PM

Comment: Mitt is NOT the President we need UNLESS you are a LDS (Mormon Moron) Like I used to be.
Unfortuantely, he is a very bigoted, ani-human who cut HIV/AIDS help in MAss by 38% while pandering to LDS owned businesses.

If you don't think Mitt panders to business and corporations, you are all fools. He just does it underhandedly and quietly as all Mormon Businessmen do. Utah is the White Collar Crime captial of the US, go see the FBI statistics! 95% of all failed scams are later discovered involving many LDS people and businessmen. Don't get blindsided by Mitt Romney's SILKYNESS.
Mitt shouldn't be casting stones in a glass hnouse. NEGATIVE advertising doesn't help a campaign and in fact SHOWS all the MITT true colors of greed and pettyness! Mitt belongs to a Cult that I escaped from. Please see a story written about Mitt and explaining cults by REAL EX-LDS Members (not me) here: www.tinymadidea.com/rant.htm

Comment: Our government is not operating. Bush gets a zero as an administration. Look at Fema, and Homeland Security, and the EPA and on and on.

Mitt has executive experience. He can make organixations run efficiently and propertly. We need that kind of President./

Besides Mitt is against illegal immigration and against amnesty. He understands the rule of law. Rudy, McCain and Huckabee are pandering to big business who wants cheap labor. The result would be huge influx of more illegals waiting for the next amensty, and more Americans without jobs.

  • Posted By: jeepwonder @ 12/29/2007 4:41:40 PM

Comment: A rose by any other name.... McCain wanted to legalise illegals. He wanted to put into place new laws with no better enforcement than we had currently. Amnesty? You can call it anything you want, but McCain doesn't fool me any more than most republicans. The fact a liberal paper like you is supporting him tells me all I need to know about his base.

Comment: My problem with all the candidates is that they keep proposing more programs, yet none of them have a solid answer on how to fix social security. My answer is to put congress on the same retirement and medical that we are on. Maybe then they would quit stealing from the fund to pay for all those " earmarks that are being added and fund our retirement through my lifetime. I probably would be able to retire at 58 with full benefits!

Comment: Its simple as ABC, the McCain and Kennedy Bill would have allowed a huge tax burden on tax payers. Ok check this out, I am an Accountant I have a masters degree and I earn about 40k a year with 2 years of work experience, I have a wife and child that I support, my wife is a stay at home mom and I am expecting another child, but with the tax burden borne by me I will end up paying $500 to the Federal government and $200 to the state government. Now where are the tax breaks for the middle class, there is none.

Illegals will only increase the tax burden on the rest of us, I can only imgine whats its going to be if they are legalized.

It's actually NOT UNTRUE as the author of this article claims. With McCain's amnesty, these illegals would become legal and ergo be able to collect social security.

Only Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson and Ron Paul have the right credentials, to stop the disasterous period of red ink. Alas, we cannot trust any Democrats to stop the illegal alien invasion, because their pandering for votes during the occupation of our nation. Even McCain destroyed his chances when he joined up with ultra-liberal Ted Kennedy to pass a mammoth immigration bill. We would have had millions of illegal aliens in our Social Security system, who never paid into it.

Taxpayers must stand with any official, who is willing to go that extra mile; no matter the political consequences. Very few politicians have the backbone to consumate the majority will of THE PEOPLE. They have become panderers to corporate and globalist open-border, unfair free-traders favors. Politicians will deliberately lie to the public, in hopes that they can scare up another couple hundred votes, by causing confusion in the minds of the less astute voters. I, for one, would like to see this type of tactic considered a felony. If there were prison time for lying to the electorate, either during a campaign, or while in office, we might be able to clean up our country.

Tightening up enforcement, closing loopholes, and dintinguishing between taxes and fees is exactly what govenments ought to be doing to be more efficient and without further dipping their inefficent hands into citizens' wallets. Romney did lower taxes, too.
