Patti - This is interesting commentary coming from someone who couldn't find anything positive to say about Ronald Reagan when he was president. You didn't support him then. What gives you credibility now? Each of the Republican candidates running for president shares more of your father's convictions and ideas than you ever did. You are not the expert on his policies and ideas simply because you share the same blood. I have to take your new-found expertise with a massive grain of salt.

when i talk of the grim reeper not looking military is due to the day .the grim reeper is worn mostly by the kids who are gothic so no one sees it as milirary. no disrespect at all.

AS A VET I WILL NOT EVEN RESPOND TO YOUR ILLMANNED RESPONCE ABOUT MY SERVICE AND JUST CAUSE I HAVE NOT A CLUE TO THE AIRFORCE FROM A JARHEAD PERSPECTIVE MEANS ZIP. MILITARLY CLINTON WAS A REAL PIECE OF WORK THIS IS NOT IN DISAGREEMENT SO STOP TRYING TO MAKE IT ONE. IS THIS THE SAME RESPECT YOU SHOW THOSE FROM IRAQ WHO WRITE IN HERE?

im finished with you, you were never in the service, i have prooved that. you are a fake, a phony, a fraud. a marine, never refers to himself as a jarhead, he refers to himself as a marine, always, never a former marine, never a ex-marine, never a jarhead. you are just like bill clinton, cant tell the truth about anything

DITTO, AND IT JUST SHOWS YOUR IGNORENCE TO THE CORP, AND I PREFERE, EX, AS IF WE EVER HAVE OUR BORDERS BREACHED BY SOMEONE TRYING TO CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE! I DON'T HAVE TO LIVE BY ANY RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, ERGO, A TERRORIST. YOU HAVE PROVED NOTHING BUT JUST HOW INTOLERANT THE OLD GET TO THE NEW! I CAN WALK BESIDE MY SON IN AN ARMY UNIFORM AND HE IS THANKED BY ALL, AND WHEN HE STATES "IT'S HIS FAULT" AND POINTS AT ME, EVEN IF I WEAR MY UNIT ON MY SLEAVE, 1ST BAT, 9TH MARINES, 1ST MAR DIV, C, CO, 3RD HERD T.A.D. TO 1ST BAT RECON, I GET A NOD? VETERANS STILL DO NOT GET THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE TODAY CAUSE OF HINNIES LIKE YOU. PRIDE, HONOR, INTEGRETY! I LEARNED TWO THINGS IN BOOT ! HOW TO DIE WITH HONOR AND HOW TO KILL! KNOW DO AS I DO AND GO TAKE YOU PILLS FROM YOUR LOCAL VA AND CHILL! VETERANS SHOULD DISAGREE, BUT NEVER DISRESPECT, WHICH SHOWS YOUR TRUE COLORS-SIR-NOBODY OUT

  • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/30/2007 10:25:06 PM

john kerrey was a joke, i can tell you as a veteran you do not get to discard your medals and then brag about getting them. the democrats in 2004 found the one democrat i would never vote for.

LOL...I love that old lie...almost 3 years later it's still pretty funny. It's funnier that some are stupid enough to believe it, but that's GOP voters for you...if it comes unsubstantiated from Blockhannity or BO, then it's fact. Heaven forbid you do any research yourself. I mean beyond the circle jerk that are conservative blogs.

there are photos of him doing both, look it up on the internet. he has not disputed this, except to say the medals he threw away belonged to someone else.

I agree with you but I think you are totally wrong.
Twice our great country elected a ???good man, good christian, and good ???merican??? over arguably better Americans, better Christians, and better men. (If that doesn???t prove the failure of democracy I don???t know what possibly could.) Now cometh Mike Huckabee another ???good man, good Christian and good ???merican??? God help us.
Ronald Reagan dismantled crucial civil programs while allowing outrageous pork-barrel spending by his congressional allies. He claimed he was making the federal government smaller while he increased federal spending and created a federal deficit we now take for granted. He allowed his wealthy base to become even wealthier so all that wealth could ???trickle down??? to the middle class. (Unfortunately, it trickled down and right and out of our country.) Ronald Reagan may be the most contradictory figure in our history. But the truth is, that he won the presidency by misleading and lying to the American people, just like our next president surely will.

Spoken like a true liberalwithout a clue. Clearly you gain your knowledge through the liberal media.
      Get your facts straight.

  • Posted By: mbronner @ 12/31/2007 12:45:43 PM

How many of Reagan's people went to jail? What was the Arms for Hostages scandal. How many times did Reagan take credit for events that he had little to do with? As to Patti Davis, I guess that she has forgiven or forgotten what her father did and didn't do. How many redwoods......What Reagan did nationally was not much different from Bush. Both have demonstrated that Business comes before anything and everything, and so much for a balanced budget. Why do conservatives hate Clinton when he balanced the budget? The hypocrisy of these Republican supporters is so glaring that they must wear blinders.

    • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/31/2007 1:17:02 PM

the last budget that was balanced was forced on clinton by a republican congress, as for the surplus, the only way a government cant get a surplus is by raising taxes, you see, government produces nothing. so when you see any government saying it has a surplus, be it city ,state, or country, it means you paid too much of your money to the government. the opposite is true for a deficet. idealy, all government should 'break even'

      • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/31/2007 1:41:44 PM

Clinton was the best bi-partisan president we had nothing was forced by either side -THEY ALL WORKED TOGETHER-YA A TERM WE HAVE NOT SEEN OR HERD IN 7 YEARS!

        • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/31/2007 1:49:05 PM

you are revising history, or you are dreaming. there has been no bipartisanship since the 50's, and by the way, your darling bill clinton never got more then 49.5% of the vote. must i educate every one??? just so much revisionism going on.

TRUST ME SHAME IS THE LEAST OF MY MENTAL HISTORY. YOUR RIGHT ABOUT RESPECT. I SHOULD RESPECT BUT AS IT WAS TOLD, HIS M.O.S. WAS PILOT, BUT WAS RUNNING HIS FATHERS POLITICAL DOINGS. THIS IS DIRECTLY IN DISRESPECT OF THOSE WHO DID AS THEY WERE M.O.S,ED TO DO. A COOK DOES NOT FLY, AND A GRUNT DOES NOT GIVE MERCY [UNLESS IT FOR THE RIGHT REASON FOR YOUR OWN]. HE HAD A JOB, AND HE DID NOT DO IT, AS HE WAS DOING NON-MILITARY DUTIES! WHICH IS WHY THE LACK OF RESPECT. I WOULD THANK HIM BUT HE HAS NO TOLERANCE TO LISTEN BECAUSE I'M BENEATH HIM, AS SOME OFFICERS FELT, AND STILL FEEL TODAY, MAKES RESPECT HARD TO GIVE! YOU SAID YOU HONOR MY SERVICE BUT NO THANKS FOR IT,? I SERVED FROM 79-TILL IN COMBAT! THEY DENY EVER HAPPENED? ASHAMED IS AN EASY FELLING, WHEN YOUR CLASSIFIED AND TREATED BY ALL AS NOBODY!

Dear Ms. Davis. Thank you for sharing your opinion regarding the invocation of your father's name among candidates in the 2008 presidential campaign. I live in Ventura, CA, and had the good fortune of growing up during your father's presidency. I remember what it was like to be proud of America and to believe in the power of the individual. I stood on the rubble of the wall your father helped to tear down, and I understand the impact of ideas. While, at first, I was also put off by the references of all the candidates to your father during campaigns, I now understand that they are simply trying to remind us of his spirit and to encourage us to reconnect to the Reagan principles of strong defense, a strong economy and strong families. I hope we can all look beyond the silly campaign stunts that candidates in both parties find themselves compelled to participate in and really listen to what they say during more serious moments. Times are different. Candidates are called out in ways that were previously not required. They must explain all aspects of their lives, even, unfortunately their religious beliefs. These campaigns can be brutal and can we really blame any of the candidates for looking to your father???s example in order to find strength for their journeys.

Well, that's interesting in a very short sighted sort of way. In fact, this peice is just plain insulting. Ronald Reagan was an actor before he was a politician and it trained him well to act as a politician. All actor's really do is portray, or well uh.... I think the author evoked the word imitate, others qualities.

This peice is insulting and MSNBC would do well to not publish such blather.

I HALF HEARTEDLY AGREE BUT ARNIE WAS AN ACTOR TO, BUT IM NOT GOING TO SAY HE WOULD DO A ROTTEN JOB. AS HE HAS GOTTEN ALOT DONE IN CALIF. SO IM TORN ARNNI IS GOOD PEOPLE AND AN ACTOR, AND HAS BRAINS, AS SOME DO. SO ITS A THROW UP TO SAY ACTING HAD A DISADVANTAGE OR AN ADVANTAGE. IT DOES HELP WITH PUBLIC SPEAKING THOUGH, THIS IS TRUE!

You know what the good part is about all this? Everyone is debating conservativism and Ronald Reagan and the 2008 Republican candidates. It means the liberals are defeated permanently. No one is claiming to be Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton. The debate is who can fill Reagan's shoes. It means America has turned the corner, finally, and conservatism has been successful. Liberalism is dead.

hey supercameron, just to set the record straight, nixon served in ww2, johnson did also, and was awarded a silver star, truman was an artillery captain in ww1, with hard service, FDR had polio so he couldnt serve, ford and reagan were also ww2 vets, even jimmy carter was a naval officer.gore was in viet nam, bush in the guard, where he spent enough time that he learned how to fly a jet, his dad, ww2 pilot, shot down in the pacific. ojly the darling of the left, bill clinton, dodged the draft. now, from now on dont post if you dont know what the facts are.you making up stuff doent make it so !!!! notoce that there are both rapublicans and democrats on my list that served, so i am not biased, you heard it here 1st

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/31/2007 1:39:44 PM

compared to those you mentioned, Bush Jr. of all the moronic remarks! the others know, saw, and were in combat including KERRY! Bush Jr. dodged the combat, and to a Veteran all were heros, but GW BUSH JR. Sir

      • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/31/2007 2:47:53 PM

strange, im a vet, and dont resent bush jr. service. i resent his presidency, but not his service. in the military you do what your told and go where you are sent. some in the military, did less then others, but all did more then most. if you were truly in the military you would know this. does a cook do less then a pilot? that pilot aint flying unless he eats. now, some have less 'glamourous' jobs, but their service is honorable.unlike you, i honor all who served, past and present.its not a question of who did the most, the question is who did anything. bush did somsthing, not as much as kerry, but more then most. you should be ashamed of yourself.

        • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/31/2007 2:56:19 PM

  • Posted By: loubelle27 @ 12/31/2007 3:05:19 PM

I totally disagree with this article! Religious beliefs have not been used as political tool but are realyl part of Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Americans wanted to know what his beliefs were and when he made the statement and declared what they were, the media and others did nothing but slander and depreciate his name. I am disappointed also that someone can not also want to reflect in their presidency, past presidents such as Ronald Reagan because he was a magnificent leader. I also don't believe that any person just because they were related so someone famous should be able to write so inaccuracies.

  • Posted By: youheardithere1st @ 12/30/2007 10:05:14 PM

dybbyaworst, no matter how you slice it all the republican presidents that you name as bad could never do the damage of jimmy carter. arthur was preet good, nixon was great on foriegn policy[albeit morally challenged ] hoover did as much as fdr for the depression, only ww2 pulled us out of that. as for hayes, who the hell knows? grant, personnaly honest, a great general, but his staff was corrupt. how come you didn't name lincoln, eisenhower, teddy roosevelt, mckinley? who was the last great democrat as president? clinton? he let bin laden go, had the morals of a cat in heat, maybe lbj? nope he really got us involved in a bad war, jfk? nope again, had he not been killed, he would not be so great, truman? no again, he lost eastern europe to the commies, china to the commies, and fired macarthur so we went to stalemate in korea, thus allowing the situation in korea today. of course, you being a commie, you overlook these things, but only because you don't live under a commie. that could change if hildabeast gets elected.

    • Posted By: fi!!mor3 @ 12/30/2007 11:06:26 PM

Hmmmm... interesting opinions... very, very uninformed though. Carter had an excellent foreign policy record. The problem wit Republicans is that they live in the past... you have to at least look at the last 50 years... not the last 200 years!!! Geeez.... Who cares...?

      • Posted By: jweissatown @ 12/31/2007 2:15:59 AM

carter had an excellent foreign policy record? want to ask the GIs who died in the Iranian desert on his heroic rescue effort of the hostages he failed to get released? the soviets doubled their nuke arsenal while he was president, civil war broke out in lebanon, and pol pot was killing millions in cambodia. yeah - great record.

        • Posted By: fabooj @ 12/31/2007 11:29:57 AM

Yep, completely different from our current president (the one you most likely voted for twice) that had NO foreign policy experience. But I guess that shows with two undeclared wars, civil war in Iraq and a high fatality rate. But I guess that out of 4 years of fighting, that the recent months have been less bloody is something of a record. Still, I'd like to know what our troops are fighting for? I have friends in Iraq and Afghanistan who are still unable to explain why they are there.

          • Posted By: robwhite1980 @ 12/31/2007 1:22:17 PM

Your irrational hatred of the President is almost as disturbing as your obvious ignorance concerning reality... You don't know why we're in Afghanistan? What have you been smoking? For those of us who didn't have their heads buried in sand, the world changed on September 11, 2001. You do not achieve peace by surrendering or by capitulating to the demands of terrorists. You obtain peace by eradicating them from the face of the earth.

        • Posted By: fiber artist @ 12/31/2007 8:59:39 AM

Actually, it was Carter who got the hostages released, but the actual release was nicely timed to coincide with the inaugeration. Reagan wasn't president until January 20 1981, so where did he get the authority to have them released? They were released only minutes after he was inaugerated - the release was obviously brokered when he had no power as president.

          • Posted By: ReasonableRepublican @ 12/31/2007 10:39:37 AM

Actually, the reason they were released is out of fear the Iranians had for the new leadership coming into power. They planned the release. No one else. They knew Reagan's stance on these matters and were aware that rescue was not the only consideration. He made it clear that the US did not deal wih terrorists. He simply took care of them. Granada was his way of taking care of them.

fi!!mor3, less fortunate then me? i am totally disabled viet vet that proudly served when a democratic president sent me there. the medals i recieved were in recognition of service to my country. by the way, i made about 200 dollars per month , lousy money even back then.of what service have been to your country? or anyone for that matter??? the medals are noy worth anything monetarily, but they show others that you served and sacrificed a part of your life for others. its good to know that you appreciate our service. in my case i did less then some, more then most. hoe about you??? by the way , i salute kerrey for his service, i just didn't like him calling me and others barberians, and of course didn't like him discarding his medals, and then bragging about them when he thought it would get him some votes.
