HIS REFERENCE TO THE MIDDLE-EAST WAS AS A REGION NOT AS A SINGLE PLACE JUST TO VERIFY. Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency program to arm Islamic mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, 1979 to 1989. The Program relied heavily on using the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as an intermediary for funds distribution. Along with funding from similar programs from Britain's MI6 and SAS, Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of China, the ISI armed and trained over 100,000 insurgents between 1978 and 1992. Somewhere between $3???$20 billion in US funds were funneled into the country to train and equip troops with weapons, including Stinger man-portable air-defense systems.


26 Aug 1988 SA-7On July 3, 1979, U.S. President Carter signed a presidential finding authorizing funding for anticommunist guerrillas in Afghanistan.[1] Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and installation of a more pro-Soviet president, Hafizullah Amin, Carter announced "The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is the greatest threat to peace since the Second World War".[2] American funding started with 20-30 million dollars per year in 1980 and rose to $630 million a year in 1987.[3]

The US government has been criticized for allowing Pakistan to channel a disproportionate amount of its funding to controversial Afghan resistance leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar,[4] who Pakistani officials believed was "their man".[5] Hekmatyar has been criticized for killing other mujahideen and attacking civilian populations, including shelling Kabul with American-supplied weapons, causing 2,000 casualties. Hekmatyar was said to be friendly with Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda, who was running an operation for assisting "Afghan Arab" volunteers fighting in Afghanistan, called Maktab al-Khadamat (MAK). Alarmed by his behavior Pakistan leader General Zia warned Hekmatyar that "It was Pakistan that made him an Afghan leader and it is Pakistan who can equally destroy him if he continues to misbehave".[6] According to a Newsweek article, in the late 1980s, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, concerned of the growing strength of the Islamist movement, told President George H. W. Bush, "You are creating a Frankenstein". Author Gilles Kepel reports that American funding of Hekmatyar and his Hezbi Islami party was cut off immediately following the withdrawal of the Soviets.[7]

The U.S. says all of its funds went to native Afghan rebels and denies that any of its funds were used to supply Osama bin Laden or foreign Arab mujahideen. It is estimated that 35,000 foreign Muslims from 43 Islamic countries participated in the war

Some countries take their elections very seriously. The unfortunate assassination of Bhutto and the savvy manipulation of the constitution by Putin to keep him in power are examples of the lengths some nations will go in search of power. Kibaki, the incumbent President of Kenya has sensed defeat in the elections and is currently using every tool in his power to frustrate the electorates will.

Unlike US rallies which boast a few hundred attendees, Africans and Asians mob their candidate's rallies by the hundreds of thousands. They are very passionate about their leaders and view elections as personal victories and vendettas; therefore when fraud is detected, they let the officials feel their wrath.

The US electorate should follow suite and fire leaders who don't deliver. The Kenyans voted out more than 20 cabinet ministers who didn???t deliver their promises.

We should vote out our ???Do Nothing Congress??? for failure to deliver.

Perhaps the reaction from the US surrounding this tragedy comes as a reaction to the way the events are being framed in the US media. GW Bush, his corrupt minions and a pathetically complacent press have suffered us to live in fear for 7 years. That fear has festered, with no outlet, and has done nothing to improve the common person's understanding of world events. In fact, that regime has created a social climate reminiscent of the Soviet era. We're afraid of EVERYTHING, and EVERYONE, and feel powerless to stop the world's seeming spin out of control. Of course, such hegemonic "control" is only an illusion maintained by the power elite in US politics, and sadly, the average person has little to no say in what actions are carried out, supposedly "in our names". We are NOT a democracy, but a republic - and seem to be on the way to imploding just like Rome.

I feel very bad about the loss but, it will be found that she was set up and whacked by her own party; partly because she was a corrupt politician(are there any that are not?) and would have been facing the charges that made her run from the country, partly because she would have faired no better in governing a troubled area, but mostly to embarrass Musharraff and somehow implicate the US (and Israel) and further incite the region to keep a collective and wary hatred against ALL non-muslems, as well as the west.

MUSLIMS THAT ARE MODERATES AND peaceful are susceptible to the indoctrination of the JIHAD chapter. At any time a young MUSLIM can change and carry out an attack in the name of GOD. THIS IS WHY THE CHApter of JIHAD is so dangerous. WE have kids in this country how have grown up in this country, falling under the spell. Suicide bombers are even doctors and lawyers who are citizens in western countries. The crusades happened centuries ago. The same goes for pakistan, any government that takes power after Free and Fair Elections, will be delivered the same message, In addition, they will assist us in the HUNT FOR BIN LADEN. Keeping Bin LADEN alive seems to be making a lot of people rich. We need to get Bin Laden and get the hell out of pacistan, let nations determine their own future. Nations cannot do that without a strong constitution that is followed like the KORAN.

Eddiewhere I have to side with you on some aspects of aht you say, handing over a political position to a family held office is not a form of democracy its just another form of Dynastic control. In order for their to be democracy, the people should have the choice. However I have to argue that religion itsself has evolved. Although Christians themselves no longer parctice the whole believe in my god or I'll annihillate your whole village technique, they still believe that their god is the only one god in the whole universe. Why must it be so? Don't all you muslims, catholics, christians, buddists realize they are all the same god? you are just worshiping different forms of the same being? Why does it have to be ONLY jesus, or ONLY MOhammod or whoever? Why can't we believe in our own gods the way we like?

Behuman I have to say that we get almost all the insight that we need by the muslims actions shown world round. You may be right about religious killings and that Christanity has claimed many lives. However to hear of religious killing by chrstians or baptist or catholic just to name a few are almost never heard of. But, there are hundreds of people dying every single day in the middle east. Why? because they feel the are right? At least i can say, and do what I want without me or my whole family being killed. You speak of being civilized, do you feel that it is civilized to domineer, threaten or brutalize a nation for control? A good leader would help his people move forward non-violently. You don't have to adopt other nations cultures but you could do better than the dark ages.

Christians, us so called "civilized" people.
