The moral and ethical implications are far reaching and profound--
leading to the deepest of reflective thought...........

WHERE DID I LEAVE THE FLY SWATTER?

I'll have to disagree with the derogatory comments posted here. This research implies that perhaps there is another explanation for homosexual behavior other than "gay genes". Anyone versed in psychopharmacology is aware that ethanol (the alcohol found in adult beverages) causes a release of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). GABA levels are also increased during sex. Repeated increase and decrease of GABA levels in the blood of humans (and flies!!) will induce GABA-seeking behaviors in the GABA-deprived state. Thus, ethanol- (GABA-) deprived flies and humans will engage in behaviors that attempt offset this chemical imbalance at any cost. This study demonstrates that non-standard mating behaviors can be brought about through behavioral modification, as opposed to some solely inherent genetic disposition.

For further reading, do some research on the relation between GABA-deprivation and depression, which is a related topic.

In defense of using fruit flies for this study, imagine the ethical implications of performing this study on humans or even animals. Insects, reptiles, microbes, etc., are often used in preliminary studies prior to going through much more costly and involved compliance processes associated with animal and human research. The genetic makeup of fruit flies vs. humans makes no difference to press journalists, however, because the mere correlation in _behavior_ is, in itself, newsworthy and suggestive of further studies. I applaud the writer for bringing us news that there are other possible explanations than genetics for homosexual behavior. She is a champion of good science and free press.

As far as tax dollars are concerned, I don't see anything in this article that states the research was funded by taxes. Nothing about a professorship at a state university mandates the use of tax dollars to do research within its walls. In fact, universities would rather that private grants fund research.

I hope this clears up the confusion expressed here.

Wow, alcohol consumption causes homosexuality? How exactly do you explain the teenagers who know they are gay and do not drink? Or the gay adults who do not drink? Another case of a right-wing religious nut wanting to call homosexuality a "choice" or something that is caused by a behaviour instead of bt genetics.
We can only hope that NotADocYet stays NotA Doc.........
