Comment: A vaccine to block narcotics might prevent a person from taking needed painkillers, say, during or after surgery. The scientific researchers will have to consider that.
A new generation of vaccines may enable doctors to inoculate people against addictive substances like cocaine and nicotine.

Comment: That's a very scary thought. Imagine very young children...Well, for one thing, imagine explaining to a child what it's for. But...the last paragraph...he or she would get sunk even deeper into addiction. But, then again, this is just developing. I can only hope that these scientists will fine ways to improve this.
Comment: You must be kidding? We will not be able to smoke or drink using a vaccine. These things are legal. My understanding of drugs like opiates is that if you make a vacine that blocks their affect what happens when these peolple actually need a drug to block pain legitimately??? We leave them screaming in hospital wards because medications will not give them relief. Then there is talk about giving them to kids to avoid alcohol and nicotine addiction...This is really a case of "Big Brother" controlling every aspect of people's lives. Imagine not being able to enjot that champagne toast at New Years. No one knows who will become an addict; These vaccines will be used to control all children and it is in affect for a lifetime.. Can not make your polio vaccine go away. People should think things out before technology is used to control their life.
Comment: Even worse... what happens when the vaccine backfires? it is not out of the realm of possibility that a vaccine to block say heroin, which mimics the body's natural opiates, could cause someone's immune system to attack chemicals produced by their own body.
Comment: so whats the holdup? get thes vaccines out now! too bad it wont happen as soon as it probably could since the pharma companies are not in it to make us well, they.re in it for the cha - ching
Comment: Well....as posted above, these are still in testing. Just read all these opinions posted here. Are you really that...enthusiastic now? I mean, being pessimistic isa one thing, but these things could actually happen.
Comment: I have custody of a grandchild born to my son and a drug-addicted teenage mother -- although my granddaughter has been kept away from her mother's influence, the notion of a vaccine that could prevent her from falling prey to her genetic predisposition to use drugs is VERY attractive.
Comment: Yes, your right about the medical establishment....more ways to make money, but in actuality drug addiction is not the biggest addiction in our country. It's really porn, I wonder if there is medication to fight that? There is some help if you know some one addicted to porn or drugs go to pornanon.com
Comment: As usual, the medical establishment is headed in the absolute wrong, and ergo, expensive, direction. A vaccine will not change the overriding problem - why a person would want to use a mood-altering chemical in the first place.
People use mood-altering chemicals to change the way they feel. People need to feel less fear, less shame, less anger, and/or they need to feel more euphoria. If alcohol or drugs won't work, compulsive use of food, gambling, shopping, sex, the internet - anything that stimulates the pleasure center of the brain - will.
How does medical science propose to help an instant gratification, consumer-driven culture stop eating, shopping, or having sex, much less stop using drugs and alcohol?
Addiction is a disease of the spirit - until we begin to address people's need to always feel good, or at least, feel less bad, all the vaccines and medications in the world won't change the fundamental nature of the problem.
If we want less addiction, we need to create a culture of less fear and less shame. We need to help people become more connected to each other, and to the greater good, instead of on self-gratification, and instant gratification.
If we want to change the nature of addiciton, we need an injection of hope and faith, not more drugs or vaccines.
