This country needs a change, men have been running it for over Two-Hundred years and have screwed up just about everything, lets see what a women President can do. As far as Barrack Obama, what kind of American name is that, I want a all American in office. As far as the Republicans go they only have one good candidate and in my opinion it is McCain, he seems to have America in his heart just as Hillary does.

Show me one country that was created by women, run by women, that is stil in existance...

        At least they could spell.

How stupid can you be that you would not vote for a person because of their name. Listen to the man before you make a decision. Really listen to the man. I was for Hilary, but I can see a man that clearly wants to change for the better the future of this country. Not the samne old crap that has been going on. Asa far as McCain he is a knock-off of Bush and hell no we don't need four more years of that. Stop being so close minded and actually open up your ears and listen. Another thing I also look at the wives and yes I do like John Edwards wife, but really take a look and listen to Barrack's wife. She is a dynamic woman and will do the country proud as a First Lady.

Talk is cheap and words are free. Show me a person's action. That is how I measure them. Both Clinton and Obama have shown disdain for the military and this country. These actions do not show me that they are prepared to be commandor-in-chief.

The most important moment of the Iowa Caucus was, it seems to me, Barack Obama's victory speech. It's not so much WHAT he said, although that was quite impressive, it's the way he said it. Simply put, Barack Obama has command presence. When I saw him speaking last night, I knew that the Democratic Party had a genuine leader.

As much as I hated the policies of Ronald Reagan, he had a certain undefinable quality. You knew that he was a resolute leader who would take charge and actually lead the country, not wring his hands and hope that mere concern would be enough to make serious problems go away. Senator Obama has the same quality. When I saw him last night, I didn't see just a candidate for a political nomination, I saw the next President of the United States.

And, by the way, just to put things into perspective, I've been a John Edwards supporter, and even made a contribution to his campaign. So I'm not one of those who were captivated by Barack Obama's charisma. I have been a skeptic almost from the beginning. But after last night, I'm no longer skeptical.

Thank you Paul Douglas! you have spoken the truth. I think some people feel jealous to see someone else excel. I think let us give praise where it is due-Barack Obama if given the faireness he deserves-as given by IOWA, he might make it.

  • Posted By: Take it day by day @ 01/04/2008 10:40:20 AM

I must have missed it if Obama said he would not salute our flag. Also I don't vote for someone because of the color of their skin. I think Obama may be counting his chickens before they hatch. I really hope that blacks are not voting for him for the simple fact he is black. I would not rule out Hillary yet or even Edwards.

    • Posted By: SIU_DEM @ 01/04/2008 11:06:22 AM

Obama never did say that. That's why there is always a gigantic flag behind him in his speeches. If he didn't support our flag, why would he always have it there?

  • Posted By: aer7980 @ 01/04/2008 10:11:45 AM

For all those of you questioning Obama's religion....at least he isn't a known God-hater like that Mormon Romney who would allow all his freaks to marry 13 year old girls and rape other little kids. That is the truly frightening prospect. DOWN WITH MORMONS!

    • Posted By: lawill8 @ 01/04/2008 11:05:59 AM

Hater? Really you are the one hating. Mormons... Latter-Day Saints do not believe in raping 13 yr olds and do not hate God. Do not confuse Fundamentalist sects with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints. Your love of God and fellow men is so apparent as well. .. ??I think you need to have you head examined. Later on you should move on to your soul.

    What makes America Great ???????

  • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/04/2008 11:04:55 AM

I find it interesting that the media announcedd the top three dems, but only the top two Reps. With Thompson only entering the fray a few months ago, they should be talking about how he managed to place third. Wonder why they don't?

  • Posted By: LaurenPK @ 01/04/2008 11:04:19 AM

AnAmerican - you are correct. Only the media can prevent the spread of this kind of garbage - not unlike the ridiculous anti-LDS comments that have already appeared on this board - by saying NO to thos who want to advertise. It is the individual media outlet's prerogative to say no to an advertiser. If they choose almight bucks over sanity, then we all suffer. I, personally, am looking forward toa spirited discussion of the differences and plans of all the candidates. I'm amazed that the extremely long debate season and the amount of coverage of content (not just character) has not burned the American public out on this election already. Senators Clinton, Edwards and Obama - Start your engines! Let's not get bogged down in the garbage - if you want us to vote on CONTENT - then give us CONTENT.

The day this country nominates let alone elects as President a black who was raised as a Muslim and will not disavow his links to radical islamists is the day this country will cease to exist as a Great Nation.

    • Posted By: eYeKey @ 01/04/2008 10:43:23 AM

So is it hate that makes America great?

      • Posted By: SIU_DEM @ 01/04/2008 11:03:53 AM

He's not a Muslim, and never was. His dad's extended family is Muslim, but his dad was not religious, and his mom's side was Christian. Obama himself joined the United Church of Christ, and worked as a community organizer on its behalf before he went to law school.

    • Posted By: eyesonu @ 01/04/2008 10:52:32 AM

retinnkeeper, you should be arrested for your comments. It's this kind of divisive language that causes unnecessary hardship for Americans. You speak with no regard for fact which makes your comments malicious. All who think or speak like you are only looking for attention for yourselves, you're not listening to the candidates or the rest of the intelligent world. What are your "specific" issues with Obama's position on the policies governing this country?

    • Posted By: Diomede @ 01/04/2008 10:49:54 AM

Obama is not a Muslim, he is belongs to the United Church of Christ. Fox News started the lie and keeps it going.

No single election in a single state will by itself change the course of history, but the perceptions created by this first experience in the 2008 presidential election could well have much more lasting effects.

What emerged from this very limited participatory democracy experience is a definition of the candidates which cannot come about by contrived "events" such as television-orchestrated debates or sound bites. The acceptance speeches of both Obama and Huckabee defined perceptions of these individuals which can carry far beyond Iowa. Each exhibited an understanding of the potential of this limited experience to define "change" -- an attempt to escape the gridlock of vitriolic partisanship in favor of trying to actually unite rather than divide.

If both of these candidates can somehow live that philosophy and withstand the partisan attacks which will invitably follow these successes, every American wins, not just these individuals.

The small sampling of less than 15% of the possible voters of Iowa created an informed and passionate group of Americans which could, as a group, cut through the moneyed jockeying trying to attack and undermine these two "winners". Perhaps as further elections follow, those choosing to vote will be equally successful in ignoring the paid assassins and their ad hominem attacks and listen to the messages each of these candidates are actually delivering of hope, belief in the goodness of all people and that the obligation of leaders is to SERVE and not manipulate for the benefit of only those who have control of the media through their endless pockets.

    What is important about America?

  • Posted By: History @ 01/04/2008 11:02:37 AM

What are the most important issues for AMerica???

  • Posted By: History @ 01/04/2008 11:02:03 AM

Issues, not your personal perceptions about what is enlightened and what is ignorance.

  • Posted By: ProudtobeanAmerican @ 01/04/2008 10:13:28 AM

I know a name has nothing to do with his ability to run the country...BUT I personally don't want a President of the United States with a last name like Obama... Example... Here is the President of the United States.. President Barack Obama (sounds like he belongs in the middle East)... no thanks..as stupid as it sounds...he's not getting my vote!

    • Posted By: geelow01 @ 01/04/2008 11:01:09 AM

Some of the comments on this post are truly ignorant and vain, especially the one about not voting for someone because of a last name. That is so Jim Crow and Hillbillish. Yes I said HILLBILLISH. It means welcome to the new generation of AMERICANS who are concerned about real issues not stupidity. President Barack Obama sounds good to me and millons of other American voters. I would have never voted for Jessie Jackson or Al Sharrpton for that matter but I will defantlly cast my vote for Mr.Obama.

    • Posted By: OB1CANOBEE @ 01/04/2008 10:42:49 AM

DID YOU KNOW HI MIDDLE NAME IS HUSSEIN AND THAT HE WAS RAISED IS ISLAMIC INDONESIA

  • Posted By: COConnell53 @ 01/04/2008 10:50:42 AM

Barack was not raised as a Muslim, nor does anyone have to worry about being patriotic and muslim at the same time. I hope you all realize that there are thousands living in muslim states who think it is impossible for a Christian to be truly "patriotic."

Also, this country has already seen some sad days. I think it's a sad day when so many Americans are so far from reality as y'all, thinking that Obama is a "radical islamist." Barack is intelligent, principled and ready to bring our government back to what it was meant to be. Obama 08!

I think this country would be better off with a women president , after all the men have screwed up everything for over two hundred years! Lets see if a women President can do a better job. I agree with oter comments about Barrack Obama, what is American about him and his name? Clinton, Edwards are more American than he.

    • Posted By: constructive @ 01/04/2008 11:00:22 AM

This is in response to "All American "
I had imagined that Americans were learned people who would know about American history. Who is an Americn? A red Indian or a white? A true American is a Red Indian. So if you have issues about Obama's name and colour you also should have the same issues about a white american as this is not is original country and such names were not common too in Red Indian America. He!he!he!

What is American about Obama is the freedom devised by the founders of this nation. No matter what your humble beginnings, ethnicity, economic standing...America is a nation where opportunity is a right to pursue.

It's too bad that the "racial trump card " is even brought up in thi country we should be ashamed! The citizens in this country had better OPEN their eyes ,it doesn't matter what color or sex our next president is ,what matters is who can run this country and clean up Bush's mess or atleast begin to since what took him 8 yrs to do will go well into the future of of our children and grandchildren to un-do.Bush not only left a child behind he left the whole country behind -let's go forward!

I am appalled by the misinformation about Obama contained in just the last 25 or so postings to this comment board. This was the entire point of my original post - All we need is 24/7 "news" coverage about how Obama is a Muslim, Obama was sworn in on a Koran - etc. Frankly, I don't care what faith he follows (did it occur to any of you anti-Islamic morons that 'their' Allah and our God are the same?) so long as the basic rules are the same (love your neighbor, don't kill, don't lie..... the same ten basics and one golden rule - which pretty much includes most faiths). Get a life, people. I don't know about you but I am a heck of a lot more concerned about how we are going to cover the cost of medical care for the beginning of the baby-boomers and the 47 million who have no insurance (which, by the way, is a number that has tripled since I started watching the number in 1977) - and how we are going to make amends with our world neighbors who that dingbat in the whitehouse has spent the last 8 years pissing off......

Wake up and smell the coffee -

  • Posted By: SIU_DEM @ 01/04/2008 10:47:53 AM

My wife and I drove six hours to go to Iowa and volunteer for Obama, and we were so impressed by all of the hard-working people who have been here for months, working for change. Let's take that energy all the way to the White House, GO OBAMA!!!

    • Posted By: SIU_DEM @ 01/04/2008 10:59:30 AM

Sorry, only meant to post that once!

  • Posted By: dosafari @ 01/04/2008 10:37:04 AM

How can we elect someone (Obama) as President of the US when he can't even give allegiance to the American Flag? We need someone who is an American and who does not mind showing he or she is an American. I'm really scared for our country. If he wins the nomination, I will NOT vote for him in November.

    • Posted By: SIU_DEM @ 01/04/2008 10:58:40 AM

You keep saying the same thing, but what are you talking about? Did you listen to his speech last night? America is his first priority. Just because he actually cares about the rest of the world doesn't mean that he isn't supporting America. Are you a Clinton operative, because I've read the exact same comment from you about 3-4 times on this blog? If you are so confident in your own ideas, address the issues. Personal attacks show that you are afraid that your ideas are wrong and need to resort to violent speech as a last resort.

  • Posted By: ANAMERICAN @ 01/04/2008 10:58:27 AM

I have read some of the craziest racist remarks that I have ever heard.
In order to stop the rhetoric of archaic racism, I challenge the media to deny posting, printing, or selling of any reading material that boast racist comments. That way they would have to spend their own money to print and distribute garbage, instead of the rest of us having to pay for it. Bet there would'nt be much spreading of the negative, and obsolete word then.
Wow, wouldn't that change the world.
