Darth Vader will lead the Senate.... oh wait sorry I was trying to keep in the spirit of the quality journalism and comments available through newsweek today :-)

Let's be serious. Is 4 years really enough time for everyone to forget everything, every election? Obama's supports were overwhelmingly 17-29 yr olds last night. And this tells us? Nothing. We can say this. That age group historical has poor turnout for general elections and statistically does not make up a large enough group to even be a base for a win.

Same thing with Huckabee. If 60% of Americans were born-again Christians he'd have it made. The problem is Iowa is typical of nothing other than Iowa. Predicting anything before Super Tuesday is pretty silly stuff. The only thing I'm sure of after reading this article and the comments is that

    1) The quality of journalism in this country is on-par with the third world
    2) We have a serious race problem in this country

My prediction? People are so angry about the economic hardships we're all facing that we're all going to tear each other apart over things like race, religion and janet jackson's boobs :-)

First let me say that Ihave been a lifelong Democrat. However, if the Democrats nominate Hussein Obama, they will be traveling the road to a crushing defeat in November. What does he really stand for? He has no type of executive experience. This is a man who was a one term State Senator and served only 2 years in the U.S. Senate. The man has never had to balance a state budget let alone the budget of the Federal Government. Hussein Obama has probably never met a world leader, let alone the knowledge of how to deal with them on the world stage. His whole campaign is based on one word "change". Well that can be a wonderful idea if you have a plan for change. However without a plan, all "Change" is is just a word. What is his plan on health care, what is his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq, what is his plan to get rid of the deficit and balance the budget, what is the plan to get change done without raising taxes? These are serious questions that deserve serious answers, not a glib sound bite. If you think Republican hatchet men like Ed Rollins, Karl Rove, or Jim Baker let Hussein Obama get away with glib sound bites without holding his feet to the fire, then my fellow Democrats you are headed down the road of George McGovern and Jimmy Carter, the road of resounding defeat and 4 more years of Republican rule.

Then who are you recommending and why? What makes them more qualified? Who has accomplished everything that you listed, and lastly what do you really know about Mr. Obama?

  • Posted By: PhillyB @ 01/04/2008 9:43:30 AM

What experience did George Bush have, the post by Mickey is a post from someone who uses Hussein to let us know that it is i.e. Arabic, then goes on to trash him, the old school of Clinton and rest and done nothing to improve this country due to living in past, fighting the past wars, in fact we all know if Clinton wins the right will try to destroy her from day one, do we really want to go through all of that again?

It is time for a change, both parties are stale, Obama brings hope for a better future, not just solgans from the past. Compared to what's been in office for the several years Obama will be a breathe of fresh air.

A leader puts good people around him, much like a god CEO does, Kenndey did this and he set the course of chance from the old and the past and make us all look towards the future.

God Bless Obama and may we all give this statesman a chance. Like Dyan said the times they are a changing".

One caucus, or a thousand polls ... I remember Tom Dewey was declared winner over Harry Truman, heck in was even in the newspapers next morning ... All these comments are just venting ... This will be an interesting election ... and the candidates will be chosen on Super Tuesday ... not in Iowa or Vermont ... QED

LOL at Mickey$07 and his fearmongering. Hey Mickey, you sound just like the Republicans: "If you think Republican hatchet men like Ed Rollins, Karl Rove, or Jim Baker let Hussein Obama get away with glib sound bites without holding his feet to the fire, then my fellow Democrats you are headed down the road of George McGovern and Jimmy Carter, the road of resounding defeat and 4 more years of Republican rule."

Man, just give it a rest. You are scared to death of the republicans. Wake up. Obama got 24.5% of the total vote in Iowa versus 11.4% for Huckabee, who won the Republican vote. Iowa is just the beginning, but it goes to show that even deeply conservative 92%-white states like Iowa have had enough of the scare tactics. The worst of the lot, Mr. Rudy-vote-for-me-or-the-sky-will-fall-on-your-heads Giuliani scraped the bottom of the barrel with 3%.

And you know what? Most people aren't scared when you call him "Hussein Obama" anymore. They just yawn. Keep right on doing that and I think you're gonna antagonize a lot of people into voting for Obama just because you think everyone is just like you and so darned stupid that they ignore everything about a candidate except his middle name.

The title to this piece is why I do not trust the media's ojectivity. Firstly, why would anyone want to "stop" President Obama. Someone who has promise to go after corporate greed, corrupt washington.
Change the title to" who will do something better for this country than Obama". We hate the media machine.

    • Posted By: mal413 @ 01/04/2008 8:56:57 AM

Are you kiddine?? Obama is corrupt Washington. Why don's you stop and think about how he and Hillary got all the money thay are working with. Do the letters PAC (or special interest) mean anything to you??

      • Posted By: davidferdi @ 01/04/2008 9:41:29 AM

Do your home work mal413 political contributions are public record... Obama got no PAC or special interest money, hillary clinton got PAC and special interset money.
Obama's base is grassroots. do you know what that means? He got the bulk of his money from people like me.

I Like Obama's message: fixing the U.S. ! The only question I have, after the Iowa caucuses, if the message of Obama is Obama's. I hate Hilary's message of keeping in line true conservatives," like me! Kenia is one of the most misguided nations on earth. Will Obama be different? Will he worship "Nature" and "Force," like Ophrah? Will he publish his drug record before the elections? Will Huckabee be different from his son? These are the questions I have, and I pine for a response.

IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME PEOPLE ARE STILL IN THE MODERN AGE OF SHOWING DISCRIMINATION IN A NICE WAY. ALL PRESIDENTS HAVE NEVER HAD EXPERIENCE UNLESS THEY HAVE HAD A SECOND TERM AND THEN SOME STILL DIDN'T GET THE EXPERIENCE. DON'T FORGET IF WE VOTE SOMEONE IN THEN WE CAN GET THEM OUT. DON'T FORGET WE CHECKS AND BALANCES IN OUR GOVERNMENT. IF BARACK WINS GIVE HIM THE COURTSEY OF PROVING HIMSELF.

    • Posted By: shouaxx @ 01/04/2008 9:38:19 AM

SURE THING AND WHEN BUSH BECAME YOUR PRESIDENT DID YOU LIKE HIM TO! YEAH LOOK AT OUR COUNTRY AND TELL ME WE WANT ANOTHER PERSON LIKE BUSH OH I LIKE YOU YOUR COOL OR HOW ABOUT A PRESIDENT THAT CAN MAKE THE CHANGES BECAUSE THEY WILL NO HOW! I DONT WANT TO LIKE MY CHIEF I JUST WANT THEM TO DO THEIR DAMN JOB!

  • Posted By: mrmister9000 @ 01/04/2008 9:36:33 AM

Please get serious. 57% of the turnout was 17-29 year-olds and they don't turn out for general elections, nor do they make up 57% or anywhere near that number of the electorate. Iowa tells us nothing, except that a small group of politically active people in Iowa on both sides of the aisle have atypical preferences. Making any kind of major predictions before Super Tuesday is about as good as using a ouiji board or consulting the wind.

Huckabee and Hillary are both frightening prospects. Hillary because of her unbridled selfish ambition driven mindset and Huckabee because he's being backed by the creepy and scary "religious right". I have traditionally voted Republican in federal elections due to my loathing of extreme taxation, people seeking and demanding handouts, my love for the ideals of Jefferson and Lincoln, and the desire I have to see an end to the exitstence of social security (it is criminal that I have to contribute). However, I have voted traditionally Democrat in local elections due to the constant pervasive existence of evangelicals in what was once my party. I am no longer Republican, thanks to evangelicals, nor am I Democrat. If Romney manages to pull it out I'll consider POSSIBLY voting for him. But, right now, I'll be voting for Obama based on who I see as a basically good natured person and a potential to have little negative or positive impact. That's what we need now. Someone who lets America run America. Someone who sits back and leaves us alone. We live in a cyclical, free market economy that needs to be left alone. People NEED government to do very few things WELL and leave the rest to us on a local level.

  • Posted By: marc101 @ 01/04/2008 9:36:22 AM

Why all the hate? Don't any of you see the good in this. Electing Obama would show the world that America is an openminded, nonjudgemental, nation run by the people and for the people. We preach democracy and equality. Lets lead by example for a change!

  • Posted By: United_We_Stand @ 01/04/2008 9:35:45 AM

Firstly, I like to say that I'm still undecided on who to vote for, and that I recognize that Iowa does not speak for the United States This is 2008 and I can't believe that we are called the United States of America when we are so divided as a people. We are in an electronic age and the world is looking, even here and everywhere there are chats. How can we espouse our values on others when we don't value each other.? We find happiness in sprewing division rather than unity. We find happiness in as long as it's not me then I don't care. We are so blind we can't see the problems in our "own backyard", yet believe all is well in the United States. Wake up!!! We as a country are creating our own demise as a country and in the world . We continue to show ignorant and closed minded behaviors and thinking based on race, gender and religion rather than focusing on true issues that effect the empowerment and betterment of this country for all. Oh by the way I know I'm only speaking to "choir" and those of you who say you love this country will continue with your ignorant and closed minded views. Have a good day and God Bless America for we surely need it

A few thousand Iowans did more for the reputation of this country than can be possibly imagined. This was the shot heard around the world. The American people distinguished themselves as different from their administration. Unbeknown to most citizens the negative image of the USA had sunken to a level that had begun to reflect not only in politics, but in the economy and above all in the leadership for values of the free
world. Maybe there will be the day again, when our children can travel the wolrd again not to be jeered but
cheered. Let us only hope, that the common practice of negative propaganda and wilful destruction that the administration has made us become so used will not derail this glimmer of hope, but rather a fair and factual dilaogue that will decide if barch Obama has what it takes to back up his high aiming speeches.

  • Posted By: ThuglyAmerican @ 01/04/2008 9:34:50 AM

Wow, Mickey, could you trade on the politics of fear any more blatantly? Hussein Obama? Pathetic. Yeah, we all know it's his middle name, but your use of it is nonetheless truly pathetic.

I was hoping for an Edwards win to be honest. Not because I don't like Obama, I like that he's a 'newbie'. But in the final analysis, I think he's about as electable on a National scale as Clinton. She would unite the Republicans/conservatives/sexists and insure a loss for the Dems. He will unite the Republicans/conservatives/racists and insure a loss for the Dems. It's high time in my opinion for a President of color and/or a female President but America is too conservative and bigoted for this to happen. If either of them get elected by some miracle, there will be assassination attempt(s). Mark my words. If Edwards is the nominee, Dems win the White House by a landslide and pick up enough seats in the House and Senate to finally put this country on a corrected course. God help us all if we're stuck with a Baptist minister for President. You think our reputation around the world is bad now? You think our rights and freedoms are in jeporady now? Wait for the Huckabee administration. You ain't seen nothing yet!

I did think. I did read. I paid attention. That is why I'm giving Barack Obama my support. People amaze me in their unwillingness to accept a real person (albeit brilliant and principled) as the leader of this country. Someone who didn't spend their life in country clubs getting hand outs from daddy. Bush spent much of the eighties as a coke head and had several DUI arrests. This was AFTER he was a grown man with children. He throws prayer into a couple of speeches and people think he's moral. Barack may have experimented with drugs as MANY people do in high school and college when they are young and stupid but at least he has the balls to be honest about it. Morality is not about sneaking a cigarette now and then. It's about what you choose to do with your talents, money, mind and how you treat other people. I challenge you to come up with one example in Obama's career when he was "foolish" or "slick". Have you seen him speak? I have several times. I have been a cynic all of my life and consider my bullshit meter to be fairly sensitive. Barack struck me as very sincere in his desire to change our ridiculous government. He not only talks about wanting to help people he has actually done it. If you don't believe me...look it up for yourself! RESEARCH his record, his life, read his books. Oh. I would also like to add that I don't give a *** about Oprah (I assume that is who you were referring to by Ophra). If anything her support improved my opinion of her, not the other way around. Everyone I know who is a Barack supporter was on board way before she came into the picture. The media made a bigger spectacle of her support than what it actually was. See, the reason that Iowa is different is that these candidates have been speaking and calling and mailing and inundating us with their views, differences, similarities, strengths...blah, blah, We are the most INFORMED. I moved to Iowa five years ago. People here take their politics seriously. These are seasoned caucus goers/voters who have seen every trick in the book. Obama's win in Iowa is a testament to his sincerity and Iowans ability to see through THE SAME OLD BULLSHIT from the other candidates that Americans have been swallowing for years. WAKE UP!

you asked for one example. The example i can think of is his.....present ....vote in the illinois senate when they were setting distances required for porn shops near schools. He was the only one in the Senate to vote this way. I dont think that is too hard a decision....to set a required distance that a porn shop should be from a school. He was involved with a real estate deal with some one under federal investigation for illegal practices. He was aware at the time he was involved that this man was under investigation. He has not made it back to the USA senate for one single vote....since he began running for office....although other candidates have done that. He voted to fund the war....every time the vote came up. Those are just some examples. He is a wonderful motivational speaker and a very good community worker. Unfortunately .....those are not qualifications for President of the USA. He needs more experience.

I haven't yet decided to support an inexperienced Osama but after that piece of fecal matter Bush anything is possible.

    • Posted By: marc101 @ 01/04/2008 9:30:53 AM

I think it is sad that nobody can see the big picture here. Electing Obama would send a powerful statement to the world! It would show them that we really are an openminded, nonbigoted, democratic nation run by the people and for the people!

    • Posted By: jmsr @ 01/04/2008 9:11:41 AM

You are right about the "fecal matter". Just look at the price of gasoline, natural gas, liquid propane, food, the housing bubble that has burst and many other adverse things that have happened since the democrats took over the House and Senate in January of 2007. They have taken our country to its lowest level in history in less than a year. With an approval of 11%, they are less than half that of our President. Your only mistake was that you named the wrong person as the fecal matter.
