Here, here! The candidate should not be selected on his race, religion, gender or anything other than his/her stand on the future of America! Please urge everyone you know to do the research on the candidates. Don't just listen to the speeches, read what each plans to do, should they be elected.

As the voice of America, we the people need to exercise our freedom to vote and be heard. This is not about one state. This is not about division. It's not about who has the most money. It's not about the color of skin. It's not about religion. It's not about gender. If America will vote for the candidate that we would leave our children and pets with, then America will have voted without negative influence. That's the kind of trust I want in a President. Vote your conscience. Vote responsibly. Vote for the person that will unite America. Vote for the one that we want to represent us. I can't speak for the rest of the U.S., but I want peace, dignity, pride and compassion restored within the United States of America with a President I can be proud to stand behind. Vote John Edwards: a man who the world will respect.

To wmoore2476, oh I see, if you question someone's ability to govern, and they just happen to be Afro-American, then that makes you a racist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we lose the right to question our elected officials, or those running for elective office, we are losing one of the fundamental freedoms our nation was founded upon, and makes us no better than the Nazis or the Communists!!!!!!!!!!!! No one has given me an answer to where the Senator stands on our problems and what his plan is for going about correcting them. Don't his supporters know where he really stands on the important issues. Oh yes, they he stands for change. What exactly does that mean, and what and how is he going to change. We the voters have that right, despite what hysterical people like yourself think.

    • Posted By: photochick @ 01/04/2008 12:56:14 PM

Go to http://www.barackobama.com/index.php to see where he stands...

???We now face an opportunity ??? and an obligation ??? to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates??? My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don't have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness.???

???Well, I don't believe that climate change is just an issue that's convenient to bring up during a campaign. I believe it's one of the greatest moral challenges of our generation. That's why I've fought successfully in the Senate to increase our investment in renewable fuels. That's why I reached across the aisle to come up with a plan to raise our fuel standards??? And I didn't just give a speech about it in front of some environmental audience in California. I went to Detroit, I stood in front of a group of automakers, and I told them that when I am president, there will be no more excuses ??? we will help them retool their factories, but they will have to make cars that use less oil.???

Let's see Barack Obama stole his idea of a healthcare plan from the failed 1993 version espoused by Hillary Clinton and is ripping off the global warming issue from Al Gore. Can this guy get an original thought or does he like to plagarize other people's ideas. dewcooper, right on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/04/2008 1:17:52 PM

As far as point number 1 - how do you think HE will pay for this? While your premiums may go down, your taxes will go UP even higher (net loss). As history shows, the quickest way to kill an economy is to take away the amount of money a person has to spend. Also, everyone can get treatment now. It is against the law for a hospoital to not treat someone. And when was the last time the government made anything BETTER by running it? Anyone want to rush out to a county or VA hospital for treatment?

As for climate change, 19 of the 21 UN climate models have been proven wrong when compared to ACTUAL readings, CO2 follows temperature and not the other way around, and it take about 800 yrs for any sugnificant increase, which is always followed by a cooling down period. If Obama doesn't realize this, he is needs to do more research. Maybe he can ask the scientists who are scampering to get their names taken OFF of the UN's published report faster than rats on a sinking ship.

I don't care who you vote for, just start looking past the words and start asking 'How?'

  • Posted By: mcvooty8 @ 01/04/2008 1:45:13 PM

Once Edwards is out of the race, his supporters will go to Obama; his anti-corporate message is closer to Obama's "change" message than Clinton's "experience" theme. That means that Obama doesn't have to win in N.H. or elsewhere to win the nomination. He only needs to stay close enough to Clinton to remain a viable candidate until Edwards drops out.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/04/2008 2:12:03 PM

And since Edward's supporters are mindless drolls, they will do whatever their leader tells them to do, since ALL blacks vote for Obama, ALL women vote for Hillary, and only white, racists and sexists vote Republican. Boy do I love the close-mindness of some...

  • Posted By: violet @ 01/04/2008 2:09:21 PM

Wow, reading these postings has been an amazing eye-opener for me. I am truly stunned at the depth and breadth of bigotry - both religous and racial - that continues to exist in our country. Our country was founded, in fact, not just on Judao-Christian values, but also and more importantly, on the right of a citizen to practice his religion (or not) as he sees fit. Our country and our constitution are unique because they embrace the majority but they also protect the minority, so being Barack, or Mitt, or Hillary, is as American as it gets. And unless you are Native American, you are no more "American" than anyone else: it's just a question of when your family became part of the "melting pot." What a pack of hypocrites!

As an Afrikan-American female, I am so happy to be alive to see this monment in history. I supported Jesse Jackson when he ran just to support a black man. I can now support Obama as a viable candidate for president of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. One that could truely lead this country in a new direction that we can again be honestly proud to be Americans that the world respects.

    • Posted By: variable1 @ 01/04/2008 1:23:06 PM

How can you support a President that does not respect the Flag or recite the Pledge of allegienace. For those of you who do not understand exactly what every word means in the Pledge, then Red Skelton will assist you and you might even learn something. • Posted By: Si18 @ 01/04/2008 2:05:35 PM

Because the flag is just a piece of cloth...I refuse to pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth. My allegiance is to my God and my goals to someday better this nation, not to a flag and not to a song. Those are only traditions, symbols, and do not truly mean anything when it comes to loving this nation.

With Bill Clinton we went from probably the most intelligent president and successfull economy of any two term president in our history to the worst two term president in our country's history in George W. Bush. Although Barack Obama may be a fine person I don't think he has enough experiance to be president. Besides the Republican hit squads will do him in like they did John Kerry. I think Hillary Clinton would be a better candidate for two reasons: First because she would be our first woman president she would make sure she does a good job and not be beholden to the old boys club of doing business. Second you would get two for the price of one with Bill Clinton at her side with his vast experiance to rely on for advice. First of all I think Iowa is the worst state to start the presidential election year. It does not represent enough of the vast majority of America. The rest of the states coming up will show a better picture of who will be the peoples choice.

    • Posted By: Twobesure @ 01/04/2008 2:03:33 PM

You are so on point! I agree with you!

    • Posted By: Twobesure @ 01/04/2008 1:29:11 PM

Wow! Who could have imagined that a black man could outright win in the IOWA Caucus! Barack Obama has did it! I support Hillary Clinton and although she has faired way less than expected, I am enjoying the fact that either Clinton or Obama will be making history if either one of them are successful in winning the Presidential election. Yes I want a woman in the Whitehouse and yes having a Black (person) would be the ultimate win. My reasoning for wanting Hillary was that as unpopular as it is, I like the Clintons, both Bill and Hillary and what better scenario than to have a strong person like Hillary and her husband, who just happened to have been one of our president to be in the Whitehouse. It is too bad that many hate on Hillary because they do not like Bill; get over it people! Bill in my opinion ran the country well and it will be great for Hillary to every now and then, seek out his opinion and or advice. Yes I am a woman of color and I will support Obama 110% should be come the parties nominee. I deeply believe America is not ready to accept a person of color yet as President. Time will tell if the face of change can sway the other parts of the country. I just do not want to see Obama hurt or have to defend his ethnicity 24 ???7, I believe the world will accept him, it is America that will be struggling to embrace him. This is the most exciting election since the Kennedy era! It is causing ???Great Debate??? and interest. I see young people embracing the change and actually showing high interest and intelligent discussions. I love it! So yes I will support my candidate until she removes herself, but without a doubt I will vote and support Obama should he be the Democratic nominee.

Comment: I don't pretend to understand the details of the proposed health care plans that are out there. I do know that, before there can be any changes it will be discussed and reviewed and written by a group of people who will represent the health, insurance , government and most of the uninsured and then it will be reviewed by Congress. Nothing is going to get done over night and certainly not without a through review by the American people and the press. The important thing to see is that we are in a position to make the special interest groups pay attention to our questions. Nothing can change until we bring all the parties to the table. lonestarkaty

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/04/2008 1:55:53 PM

Well let's see, the only way for the government to pay for anything is to raise taxes (net loss for us). The only way for helath insurance companies to raise profits is to raise rates or cut coverage (another net loss for us). And the only way doctor's are going to continue to practice is to charge more for their services (and yet another net loss for us). And if other socialized systems are any indication, unless we can afford to go private, we will all be waiting for treatment.

I ask yet again, when has the government EVER made anything cheaper or better by running it? Stop blindly giving them the power over your life and wallet. Do you want to know how EVERYONE can get coverage - stop taking 40-60 percent of their income! Problem solved...

it seems strange that less than 10% of the electorate in iowa can crry so much weight or is this just the media blowing everything out of proportion as they usualy do.

    • Posted By: texaschick @ 01/04/2008 1:54:26 PM

You got it! Media blows this out of proporation...Iowa has NOT picked the last three Presidents. Personally I think we need a big state included with Iowa in the first primary.

  • Posted By: readandlearn @ 01/04/2008 11:17:52 AM

I do not understand why so many people are willing to latch onto half truths, falsehoods and prejudiced sound bites (racial, religious and political) and pass them on as factual. While I like Obama, I am not yet certain that he is my first choice candidate, but my decision will be based on my reseach into candidate positions and the best information I can find . . .not on what others want me to think. Only through an informed electorate can we have a democratic society. So don't try to say that Obama will not give allegiance to the flag or that Obama is not a Christian in an attempt to sway or scare other voters. Don't say that 57% of his support came from 17 to 29 year old voters when a simple search of voter breakdown in Iowa will show that Obama won 57% of the 17-29 year old vote. He also won 42% of the 30 to 44 year old vote as well as a majority of the women's vote. Don't say that Republicans tried to skew the vote toward Obama, when approximately the same percentage of voters who were not registered as Democrats participated in this caucus as did in 2004. In short, each of us should become educated voters and we should support the candidate who we believe will take the United States in the direction we believe it should go.

Yes it appears that Obama is likely to be the next US president. So the Whites must get ready for a real shock.

    • Posted By: indiangurl @ 01/04/2008 1:47:25 PM

Yes....And it should be no great shock to you that your comment has just cost Obama a WHOLE lot of those "real shocked " white votes. It just cost him mine.

    • Posted By: allan69 @ 01/04/2008 1:20:33 PM

Maybe the more appropriate statement would be that Republicans should get ready for a Democratic President. Thank God! I'm white, grew up in SC, and wouldn't vote for a Republican even if they were the last man standing

Let the sheep flock to Obama to get sheared in the next primary. Iowa wins nothing, and has ben waaaayyy overhyped by the media. It's a long primamry season, folks, and it doesn;t take much to undo a candidate ... Howard Dean, anyone?

If you're voting a "color" line or a "religious" line, then do the rest of us Americans a favor and return to voting on "Dancing with the Stars" or "American Idol." Vote for who can get the job done.

  • Posted By: DCdevante @ 01/04/2008 11:49:23 AM

I actually think this is sort of a racist article. Blacks will follow? As if African Americans can't make informed decisions. I understand the facts of the past; but I think that is a distorted view. Do not forget that African Americans are still a minority in this country so if he's elected it wont be because of how he says "blacks"
I think people should read between the lines of this article. This article should be called "How can we stop Obama".

    • Posted By: violet @ 01/04/2008 1:44:06 PM

I heard Jonathan Alter speak at an event last year, and he was extremely supportive of Barack Obama, even suggesting that Barack was his favorite candidate for the presidency. I think you're off-base here.

  • Posted By: jerseyjack @ 01/04/2008 1:11:04 PM

I do agree state and church need to stay separate for a reason...
That's why the founding fathers put it in the constitution.
Bush could not understand why this is important.
He was president...I'm a cashier and I fully understand why this is important. MONEY TALKS

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/04/2008 1:35:30 PM

As a cashier, you might want to read more. Where is the SEPERATION of church and state featured in the Constitution? When they gave credit for our unalienable rights to OUR CREATOR? Or when they wrote in the first ammendment that that not only can the federal governemnt not impose a religion but they CANNOT prevent the citizens from PRACTICING religion? In other words, it is the federal governments responsibility to PROTECT religion.

The notion of seperation of church and state is found no where in the Constitution. It is a misquoted phrase taken out of context from a letter by Jefferson concerning voting and church memebership.

I hope this will be the last comment to give you your shinning moment. This is the very thing that I am speaking about. It is unintelligent, small-minded people like you that support the thought that America is not ready to embrace a President of color. Get over it; the face of change is coming, be it a woman or a person of color!

How much of a chance would a Japanese-American have had to be elected president 6 years after Pearl Harbor...Or even 15 years afterwards for that matter...That's a NO-Brainer...Yet, it's been only six short years since 9/11...The day the Muslim mindset toward our way of life was revealed to the world!! Now look at us...We're dangerously close to putting a Muslim in the White House if we don't wake up...Practising Muslim or not...
I must admit though, our choices between Hillary, or Huckabee are less than desirable also.

How do we keep coming up with these rich, cookie-cutter politicians anyway? People who care only about getting elected, and make it sound like they have OUR best interest in mind? They expect you to believe all the rhetoric they spew and they'll say anything to get a vote!! And even worse, many of US believe them. Until we have a good old fashioned house cleaning throughout the government, and put people in charge who really do care about YOU and ME, I wouldn't expect things to change for the better...The bottom line is: It's all about power and money!! A sad situation!!

If you've listened to the canidates that are running and don't beleive them what makes you so acutely aware that when the "canidate" comes along you'll be able to regconize him/her. It would seem you need to not only rethink your comment but also realize none of us can say for certain what the canidates will and or wo'nt do until elected. Perhaps you've had alot of let downs in your life, and it may have blinded you. The person that deserves your truth could very well be staring you in the face.

You forget to make a distinction between the vast majority of muslims and muslim extremists. In my opinion, there is little difference between muslim extremists and evangelical christians. Were the geo-political and geo-economical scales reversed, I could easily see evangelical christians CRUSADING against the islamic world.

    • Posted By: bingo789 @ 01/04/2008 11:21:16 AM

Where do you get the idea we are close to putting a Muslim in the White House? Just because Barack's father was a secular Muslim?
Also - the "Muslim mindset"? Muslims do not all share the same views! Some Muslims are fundamentalists and extremists (e.g. The Taliban) and some are far more secular. Think about the difference between Evangelical Christians and Methodists. They are both Christians, yet have vastly different view points.

Also the urban legend that Obama is some sort of Islamic Manchurian Candidate has been widely disproven... Let's try to focus on issues, not on smears and dirt.

  • Posted By: Mammabee48 @ 01/04/2008 12:58:31 PM

Having read most of the comments; I am dismayed that there are many half-truths and misconceptions on this board. Saying that, I am very thankful for the intelligent, thoughtful people who will either vote Hillary or Obama.

I am scared of Huckabee being President. To me, one solution is a "Clinton/Obama" ticket. I have not decided who I would vote for President; but it will be the Democratic nominee. Why not Obama/Clinton"?
Well, she is more expereinced with maturity and a no-nonsense approach. Obama has fresh, new ideas but
    has a lack of experience.

If we, as democrats want to take the election; "lock, stock, and barrel"--you pick the two strongest candidates and put them together. Personnaly, I don't think you could beat the "Cliinton/Obama" ticket. You would have all her supporters, plus his, and maybe most of the undecided.
Then, if Hillary serves one term or two, Obama would be in perfect position to run for president then.

This is just my opinion, but it makes alot of sense.

    Just my opinion.

I'm "white", middle-aged, and a registered Republican, but I like Obama more than the other candidates. His only real drawback is lack of experience, but that could be a positive; at least he is not a hardened pol. I could care less where his father came from. I'm also a devout Christian, and this country was NOT founded on Christian religion, but on Deism. That's why the separation of Church and State is so prominently featured in the Constitution.
