dont people see through the scam and realize that ms clinton is simply a vehicle to allow bill and his cronies to come back into the white house? they are the national nightmare that wont go away. this is the hillary "you owe me" ego tour, and bill's "reunion"tour. im a democrat and i want nothing to do with these two.. she constantly talks about bush and the republicans, but the issue is our future and our place in the world. i agree with sorenson- just because she lived in the white house, thats not experience. im married to a trial lawyer- could i plead a case in court? no way. the clintons need to go do something useful instead of tying us to a past that has less to this present mess.

As a 66 year old Republican disgusted by party behavior in G.W.B years I'm rooting hard for an Obama vs. Huckabee choice. I don't know yet which way I would vote - Republican or Democrat, but expecting to get a fresh approach by a smart president willing to consider all the options will be the test. On the Democrats side, only Obama seems likely to pass that as it now stands.

Bill Clinton, on the Charlie Rose show some weeks ago, said a vote for Obama is a "roll of the dice."

And the voters' ears perked up. . .

As an international reader, I agree with the article. Obama would change how the world looks at USA. We would again see a country run by hope instead of fear, and one that is more open to discussion and debate than to shoot at us if we disagree. I want to like USA again, that's why I want Obama to win.

  • Posted By: msconce @ 01/04/2008 11:43:44 PM

My fellow Nebraskan is exactly right. Electing a man of color President would change our image abroad overnight. Mexico, Central America, South America, Africa, South Asia, East Asia and South East Asia would sit up and take notice. America is back! And what would the Arab street make of an American President whose middle name is Hussein? They would listen, friends. They would listen intently.

    • Posted By: YuWang @ 01/06/2008 3:23:18 AM

Yes, I believe this is the true reason for Obama's popularity. US is becoming weak, and doesn't know what to do with the war and this is many people's subconscious thinking that by electing a muslim's son, at least the muslim world will be happy now and will no longer fight with us. People forget the don't like us not because of anything else, but because of Isreal. And the day we abandon Isreal is the day US will go down truly. Simple. Appeasing is no use.

Let's see, other than looking great on T.V. and giving inspiring speeches, what did JFK do as President? His weakness gave us the Bay of Pigs debacle which, in turn, gave us the Cuban Missile Crisis, the largest foreign policy crisis of the Cold War. And we know now that he had to trade our Jupiter Missiles in Turkey to get himself out of the hot seat. He started the Vietnam War. His foreign policy was an utter nightmare. Most of his domestic priorities were socialistic and didn't get passed until he was killed and Johnson persuaded Congress to pass them as a memorial to him. We've spent four decades trying to unwind the damage those programs have caused in black America and beyond. If Obama is as popular as he seems to be, let's pray that he is no JFK.

  • Posted By: YuWang @ 01/04/2008 11:13:20 PM

Race is not a big problem right now in US. It's not like black people are currently being oppressed in US. If anything, black people are very much privileged when compared with other minorities in US. It's not a critical time to make more rich and famous black people. We already see plenty of them in EVERY field, and every ad or movie or TV show must feature a white and a black hero in them anyway.

    • Posted By: slthornton @ 01/05/2008 5:15:08 AM

Just your comments indicate that there continues to be racism in our country. Did you say that there were enough white rich and famous people? No, you did not. Why do you distinguish black americans, "in every field".? Every person in this country has the right to be what they aspire to be. Why does color make a difference? Obama is right. We are a country of immigrants, but, we are all americans!!! Let's act like it!

      • Posted By: YuWang @ 01/06/2008 3:18:26 AM

I'm a first generation immigrant, and I'm grateful to US and love US! But I believe just because America is so nice to immigrants and takes us in and gives us great opportunities doesn't mean we must take it over and run it! America should keep its original founding values which have made this country so great! Immigrants can contribute in many ways and can reach as high as vice president, but for the symbol of this country, it should be a real American, someone who represents America in a better way.

      • Posted By: louie alcon @ 01/05/2008 1:21:43 PM

Dito on that comment, "lets act like americans". But I must also comment that I fear and dare to say that the real character of many americans will come out during the election and their prejudices will show. No one knows what goes on behind that curtain but the individual behind that curtain. This man is just a man fighting for the average individual, not a black man or a white man,,,just aman.

  • Posted By: jamesmadison @ 01/06/2008 3:13:39 AM

What did JFK ever do as President besides looking great on T.V. and giving inspiring speeches? Let's see, his weakness and indecision gave us the Bay of Pigs debacle which, in turn, gave us the Bay of Pigs, which was the biggest single crisis of the Cold War. He started the Vietnam War. And he began campaigning for most of the socialist "Great Society" programs that LBJ eventually got enacted, which we've spent decades trying to disentangle ourselves from. If Obama is as popular as he seems, pray he's no John F. Kennedy.

  • Posted By: RosieOMalley @ 01/05/2008 3:39:51 PM

Obama is the "light in the universe" which will ride the tide to the White House. Obama possesses honesty, integrity, intelligence, energy and is the real proponent for "change" Obama stands for hope and a promising future for America. His zest and zeal are magnificent and unparalled. He not only resembles "Camelot", but is a victor of untold proportions! One which will change the landscape of the "real" American people.

    • Posted By: YuWang @ 01/06/2008 3:06:42 AM

Yes, so Islam will be lifted high and spread like fire in the world and muslims will take over US, for after all, we'll have a muslim son as our commander-in-chief! How silly could Americans be? Basically inflicting a huge slap on itself! I think there might some appeasing thinking in his supporters' mind, since we're in this unsolvable difficulty with the muslim world, maybe by putting Obama in oval office, somehow Osama will make peace with us.

Obama as JFK? I do not know what you are smoking Eleanor, But did you get from your candidate! Give me a break. You have completely given leave of your senses.

    • Posted By: dw1220 @ 01/05/2008 9:35:29 PM

Actually, Obama reminds me more of RFK.........more honest, more determined than his brother........and alot less of a political risk of being seen with the wrong woman...........yes RFK and Obama had possible ties to the wrong woman, but at least it wasn't an habitual thing. I don't mean to diminish JFK in the least as a president and a leader, but he did has a real problem in that particular area.............and no, I will never forget the hope he inspired, the courage he showed with Nikita K. I will never forget the 22nd of November, 1963...........leaving school early, coming home to see my mother, a diehard Republican who voted for Richard Nixon, crying when I got home..........watching 2 weeks of Jackie and her children on TV every day.......JFK Jr. waving goodbye to the casket on the horse-drawn carriage......the lighting of the Eternal Flame at Arlington........I remember it all so vividly.......and who doesn't remember.........but JFK, all in all was no saint......most likely Abraham Lincoln wasn't either.......but who have we had the chance to vote for in decades who has much of the character of Lincoln, JFK, RFK, and MLK all in one person? They were all hated by a significant part of the American population for their strong stands on what they believed.........but each is a beloved leader in America by such a large portion of the population today. We all need to take a serious look at the character of this man........forget whether he is a black or white candidate........and listen to the common cord he strikes in his message of positive vision for America.

      • Posted By: YuWang @ 01/06/2008 2:49:41 AM

I'm so sick of Obama's pretending/imitating JFK, so silly and non-original, and yet people think he's inspirational. All he says is old old stuff, empty hope slogans, trying to sound like Martin Luther King, like he's an oppressed Black. But the fact is he's a muslim or a former muslim, and black people are not being oppressed and need liberation and hope. Just because he's black does not qualify him as need to be president

  • Posted By: dw1220 @ 01/05/2008 4:16:07 PM

I believe Ted Sorensen has hit the nail on the head in his appraisal of Barak Obama and the appeal that he has to the American public. Obama could garner many votes of the Democrats, a significant amount of the Independents, and a fair number of Republicans too. He has such a positive outlook in general........the calm, cool-headed logic of a man who desires to do right by all players in a given situation. Rather than having a 'personal agenda', his focus is on what can bring people together to find a solution. His 'racial identity' is as much white as it is black. His ability to speak clearly and intellegently before a crowd really makes people want to listen to his ideas and proposals. His separateness from the Washington crowd and cronyism makes people feel that he might be a refreshing change from the political strife and fighting we have endured for so many years. The sincerity, the thoughtful responses to questions, and the positive attitude toward other people all add up to a man of integrity and wisdom.......a real 'people person'.......a man who gives unselfishly to make the world a better place. This kind of person draws other people to himself from all walk of life.......regardless of color, income level, or party affiliation. As JohnSaul commented earlier......Iowa is predominately white........and Republican.......and yet, look at the strong showing Obama made there. How often does a strong candidate from the opposing party bother to make a significant comment about the candidates of the other party in a primary contest.........Mitt Romney is obviously concerned about Obama at this early point in time........maybe he already knows what the rest of the country is beginning to sense........maybe this guy Obama is a real challenge to all of the candidates of all the parties.......maybe he really is someone who could provide the leadership we need today........surround himself with good people and turn this country around.........at home and in the eyes of the rest of the world.......because we sure are in need of such a leader today. Can I get an amen to that?

    • Posted By: devan95 @ 01/05/2008 5:21:05 PM

Hell no. the guy is a far left radical. Have you looked at his policies and voting record? He will not unite America - he will trigger the next Civil War by throwing out the Constitution and embracing Marxism.

      • Posted By: dw1220 @ 01/05/2008 7:58:06 PM

Obama is not a 'far-left radical'.........he is a reasonable, thoughtful individual who looks for solutions to problems with a view of what is best for all concerned. The current administration, and the dynasty it represents, has made a mess of our standing in the world by trying to bully the rest of the world with our military might no matter what the cost. At home, the current leadership (or lack of it) has ignored the needs of the majority of Americans to line the pockets of the chosen few. We need a leader who can work with people, carry on an intellegent conversation, and get to the bottom of issues without bankrupting our country with scare tactics and special interests of their corporate friends. Jimmy Carter was an honest, sincere person.......he just lacked the fighting skills needed to be tough when necessary. Barak Obama has this same sincerity, as well as the abiltiy to fight when necessary to see that justice is served for all parties. This sense of fair-play.........this levelheaded thinking ....... is what America needs at home and abroad. The agenda of 'I'll get mine, no matter what anyone else or the rest of the world thinks', has hurt this country at home and around the world. When the middle class is feeling the crunch so badly that they are sick of Washington and the 'old boy network', and the rest of the world is having second thoughts about being our friends........then we are in danger of being in a civil war........both internally and internationally.
Barak Obama speaks with a sense of fairness, reconciliation, working together, and seeking a common ground........this quality of leadership rings true with most people even if they are too stubborn to admit it in the beginning. I believe he will be able to bring about some real change by his vision for all Americans, and by surrounding himself with capable people who share the same vision. He reminds me very much of Abraham Lincoln, a man who was so very human and yet strongly determined to do what is right and just for all concerned...... a man who was not afraid to be humble, possessed great wisdom, was determined to do the right thing, and did not hesitate to reach out to his enemies when needed and reconcile their differences. Lincoln stands tall among our countries best leaders........when someone has so much of the same qualities, we need to unite behind him. So seldom do we get the chance to see this kind of person centerstage, eager to lead this country.........most would become weary of the long fight and dirty tactics they would have to endure to get that point.

You are really hitting the koolaide pretty hard. If you don't think this is radical you must be posting from another planet: :
During his years in the legislature, Obama voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive,
I can't believe anyone could be that cold but that's your warm, cuddly Obama.

          • Posted By: invisibleman @ 01/06/2008 2:38:36 AM

It seems to me that either you have forgotten or don't realize that when you are spouting propafganda about what a canidate did or didn't vote for you also have to take into consideration what else was attached to the bill ( they are bundled together). Without looking at the complete package that he voted against you are just an agent that helps spread misinformation.

          • Posted By: dw1220 @ 01/05/2008 11:44:27 PM

I definitely do not agree with Obama's vote against giving medical care to babies who survive abortions.........likewise, I am dismayed by your referral to them as aborted fetuses.......it sounds less than warm and cuddly also. When I see bumper stickers on cars that read 'Save The Whales' or something similiar, I would love to paste another sticker next to it reading 'Save The Baby Humans'. I wonder how many of those car owners would be offended by my addition to their bumper stickers? I voted for Bush Jr the first time soley on the basis of his supposed pro-life stance.........the second time he didn't get my vote......I know so much about his attitude toward the living Americans........'the cattle' we are referred to by his kind people ..........we still have abortion.........and now we have such a mess at home and abroad to deal with too from all the years that the Bush dynasty have been pulling strings in the background for three generations. Who, among all of the Washington insiders, the good ole boys/girls network, is going to stand up and do something for the majority of Americans? We haven't had a real leader who cares about Joe American and has a levelheaded vision for where we are going in decades. Now, we have a chance to elect someone who has this leadership ability and the guts to buck the Washington establishment that keeps the status quo. I would rather go with the 90 or 95 percent sincere human being than the 50 percent sincere human being who does an occasional good deed for show.

I've been hesitant about Obama, partially because I'd like to see a woman as president, and Clinton is more experienced -- in the Senate, as well as a partner to the former president. But i feel that we need some kind of radical change, as well as leaders who inspire us to participate in the political process, and this article helped me see Obama in a different context....For all our sakes, let's hope he is another JFK.

for the children! Dems don't want to "torture" terrorists but had no problem torturing their own citizens. Obama will be no different. If he really wants to be different why is he a liberal Democrat? Same ol same ol.

    • Posted By: dw1220 @ 01/06/2008 12:18:21 AM

Why do you have the idea that all Democrats are somehow liberals and all Republicans are somehow conservative? Did you ever consider that some people in this country might be moderates in either party? Or that there might be a reason for so many Independents in this country who are tired of the labels 'liberal/conservative/Republican/Democrat' or that you have to be a hardline party member at all?
The partisan bickering........the dirty politics........the unfulfilled promises of both parties......are tearing this country apart........we need to get down to what really works for all Americans........what is fair and sensible for all of us........not just the special interests, the wealthy, the priviliged few. We need to get people back in the workforce, making a living that puts a decent roof over their heads, giving them the sense of pride and self-worth........somehow you consider that 'radical' or 'liberal'......is it because it doesn't 'conserve' the status quo ? Middle of the road Americans, moderates who are concerned about this country's direction internally and internationally, those 'independents' that are being courted by everyone running, will determine this election if it is handled fairly with no vote manipulating. They care much more about the candidate's depth of character and the ability to lead than what party they are from or other such sacred cows........this is the age of information.......plastering someone's face on tv won't capture independent votes........or all the negative, dirty trashing of the other guy. We put up with 8 years of internal embarrasment because our wallets got a little thicker........and 7 years of international embarrassment while our wallets got alot thinner.......now it's our chance to vote for a candidate who is smart and decent at the same time with no favors to dole out and a real vision for America.

Why can't Barak be JFK like. I nearly cried when I heard of the win in Iowa,( and I'm a 43 yr old white male). Barak is exactly to us, what JFK was to the people of the 60's. He is a breath of fresh air and leadership. I particularly like his humility, he isn't afraid to admitt that he doesn't have the answer, and that he is willing to hear all positions and ideas. That to me repesents an open mind and honesty. I wanted Clinton initially because she represented change, ( wich is what we need in this country yesterday), But she is too much of an insider. With Obama We get the best of both worlds, Change and Unity as a Country.

ARCANUM202: Do you really think that the black man will stand up and be whatever they want to be? Are you saying that the white man is holding the black man back? Quite frankly, with the UNCF and all the white companies and people donating to it, for the education of black people, I find your comment distateful. You do remind me of the feminist movemnet. Women did not want equality they wanted to be sitting on the heads of men and show them they are better. Now your comments make me think that is what the black man also wants....AND DESERVES. To say that you fear some WHITE will harm your man, is despicable and racist. No I can see the wagon master already. "I do not know if i can cast that vote for Hillary....." indeed. Band together and get your first black president in the USA. A new day has come huh? Well not with my vote, even if it will be a losing vote. I am not going to have my children and grandchildren point a finger at me and say..."see what you helped to create". I never ever thought that anyone would hear me say this....BUT I WOULD RATHER VOTE FOR GEORGE BUSH AGAIN.

I have a so-called 'black' granddaughter.......I am white.........so she is white also.......as much as she is black........she looks like my daughter, except her light brown hair is very curly......Obama is a white man with a black father.........as much as he is a black man with a white mother........why do we only see him as a Black man?
If you are so concerned that black people might squeak a black man into the white house, then you should be getting the last laugh.........you would have a White man in the White house with a year-around Suntan, with a portrait of his White mother on his oval office desk! Think of it........our tax dollars wouldn't be squandered on tanning salons visits every summer for our chief executive to have a 'healthy tan.' Too bad for some Americans that she is deceased......maybe they would look him as more than just a 'black' presidential candidate. As for Bush Jr..........I voted for him the first time.........he couldn't get my vote the second time.........I would rather vote for a skidrow bum...........oops maybe I did..........one with a red tie....and GWB on his lapels.......a bible in one arm.......and a sack full of tax dollars in the other hand to slip to his old buddies in the oil/energy business. I would never again put my money on Bush Jr or Bush Sr or Grandpa Bush either...........they have ruined this country at home and abroad with all of their machinations of the past 60 plus years.

Comment: Obama is a reasonable, thoughtful individual who looks for solutions to problems with a view of what is best for all concerned.
