There is nothing new under the sun. This is just what is suggested in a 12 step recovery program that I've availed myself to some 2 years ago. Writing is just one of the several tools recommended to support me in this life style change. I think that's the key, no longer do I diet so a ask myself what's eating me? and get to the core of my behavior toward food. Today I am 80#'s lighter and feel better in my 50's than in any other time in my life, what a gift living in recovery.

i can actually see this working.I used to write about my feelings and happenings in my life all the time but my parents would find the papers and I'd get in trouble for some things i wrote about so I stopped doing it.Now tha I read this I'm realizing that around the time i stopped writing and started keeping all my feelings inside I started gaining weight.

Lilly Rose: Perhaps in your case, it is genetic. It also sounds as though you are rather sedentary in your lifestyle. Do you keep track of your food intake in your journal? If you are obese as you stated then perhaps a visit to your Doctor or some exercise is in order. I found her advice to be full of good solid well founded solutions and I shall try it to remove about 15 of my unwanted pounds..Hey nothing ventured nothing gained.

LilyRose..Maybe yours is a case of genetics. Do you also keep track of what you eat in your journals? If you are obese as you state, then possibly another outlook would work for you. I am sure some exercising might fit in there somewhere for the writer. Legalgirl..Thumbs up! Right on!

People need to learn how to read what she is saying. She's not claiming that simply by using a pen and paper will make you lose weight. She's advocating writting/reflecting which helps self-esteem so you won't be down and overeat. She's advocating a food journal to show you were your problem areas are. It's a mental game. Writting it down is about accountability. If you all stop and think, it makes perfect sense. And HELLO!!! Doctors recommend food journals as do most diet plans and they work. She's not some freak telling you no carbs and you lose 50 pounds or only eat rice every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and lose 100 pounds in two days. Other people use that garbage and millions fall for it. That's not what she is doing. If you still think that, read the article again. Slower this time.

I've been writing off and on for quite some time now and it wasn't until I finally got the internet that I started to lose weight. It sounds weird, but I think I know why: I keep a couple of blogs, each for different emotions. I have my 'home page,' http://360.yahoo.com/dunkadoughnut81, where I pretty much just write down what I'm feeling, plans for the day, etc. I have a page where I actually publish my 'work,' http://thatsnonsensegirl.blogspot.com; I love to write literary nonsense, my mind is constantly thinking of stories that may make no sense in the beginning but in the end it does-just fun, creative work. Then I have a blog where I publish 'adult' stories, which I believe is a healthy creative outlet. I've been doing it for about a month now and am almost down another size; I never saw it coming! I write long hand in bed sometimes, but I agree with the author that writing out your feelings can definitely help you shed some pounds.

She didn't claim to coin the phrase "HALT" , she asks people to use it. Acronyms are not a new concept and neither are diet journals, but if her new book helps people get healthy, then more power to her.

She didn't say she coined the phrase "HALT" , she said she uses it. A lot of diet plans encourage you to keep a diet journal. I agree it's nothing new, but if her book helps more people become healthy, more power to her.

Hey that "HALT" thing is totally ripped off.
Charles Stanley, a tv preacher from Atlanta,
first used it as an easy reminder to his listeners
for keeping from temptation to sin.

It does work, and it's not a new idea. I've been keeping a diet journal for 3 yrs now, have gone from a size 26 to a 14, with more to go. I started because I had to learn to eat more than once or twice a day to get my metabolism burning. So, a diary was a good way to eat 4-5 times a day while still staying under 2000 calories a day. It really isn't that hard, it's fun, and I still eat everything I like, just much less of it.

Just for the record...it does work. I've been keeping a diet journal for 4 years now and have gone from a size 26 to a 14. I had to train myself to eat more than once or twice a day to boost my metabolism, so, in learning how to eat 4 or 5 times a day and still keep my calorie count below 2000 calories, I had to write everything I ate down. It works for me.

Wow anyone can really write a so called diet book these days. This is ridiculous.

As a writer, and having journaled during my undergrad classes, I think everything she says makes sense. Reflection into your own feelings should help us understand our emotions and reasons for overeating. Her advice seems sensible and healthy and definitely worth trying!

As a writer, and having done journaling for reflection in my undergrad classes, I think this could really work. Everything she said makes sense, and it's a sensible, healthy approach. I'm going to give it a try!
