It's part of our culture- whether we like it or not. I don???t think it should be used, especially by the adolescence. Since way back when Caucasians tried devising methods or means to degrade us. Countless methods were implemented in attempts to make and keep the African-American submissive; even though we???re among the majority in this land, if not the world. Parts of animals, namely the swine, were given to our ancestors as useless scraps because they weren???t deemed worthy enough to even eat the same food, let alone from the same table.

    1) I'm a bit puzzled at the wanting to ban the "N"-word. Don't get me wrong, I understand the why. I mean, I have a 5yr. old daughter and never use such degrading language around or even near her in any sort...and of any type. I don't use any language of the sort myself. But that???s by choice. I don't because I've decided years ago to live a "saved" life. That being said, I don't think the "N"-word should be quote, unquote, banded.way back when Caucasians tried devising methods or means to degrade us. But now, chitterlings are a delicacy. The feet, ears, and snout are proudly and shamelessly eaten by us southerners, to say the least. (A hog???s intestines???through which fecal matter is disposed.) I say all that to say this, the ???N???-word has been transformed, just as any other terminology as with slang or Ebonics. Just like I wouldn???t recommend eating just anyone???s chitterlings, there???s certain ways and by whom usages of the ???N???-word would have negative or positive connotations. Just like if someone you may or may not know calls you that, it could be offensive or a term of comradery. Exs: ???That _igga???s crazy!?????????That???s a crazy _ss _igga!?????????This my _igga right here!?????????You my _igga fuh??? life??????and so on and so on. (And it???s totally off limits to Caucasians. Especially in the presence and directed towards African-Americans.) The term ???redneck??? can be offensive depending on its usage. (Though I???ve never her it to be.) But, the ???N???-word, with the ???-er??? on the end isn???t expectable, regardless who uses it; but it does have more of a negative impact if used by Caucasians, though. There???re words, slang, Ebonics, or in Webster???s, that can have negative connotations depending on its usage. We???ve taken a word meant to belittle us, and, over time, we???ve made it ours??????Ebonacized???! It???s proof that WE aren???t submissive, in that since. Something meant to be a degrading, belittling title we made it our own. Like chitterlings???

If he was any good he would not need to use that word to get attention.

As another rapper said, you want to hear a word that is harsher than ***? Darfur.

  • Posted By: ahudson @ 01/31/2008 10:03:57 PM

Music is art, and art is a way of expressing yourself, the man can call his Cd whatever he wants to. This is the problem, America cannot have both ways, on one hand people want freedom of speech and on the other hand they want censorship. Non of us has heard a lyric from the album so how can you judge. If an author wrote a book and the title was "***", it wouldn't be a problem, So why is it a problem when he does it. He is a very introspective person, go listen to some of his music before you slam the CD or the title.

It is really racist to say that white people cant say a word and black people can. I am offended. Maybe I should file a discrimination suit against him.
He is truly ingnorant in every sense of the word.

I was really shocked by Nas' opinions. Jackson and Sharpton's attempts to get African-Americans to stop using the n-word was an important move for the black community, in my opinion. The cavalier attitude which blacks and whites displayed in 2007 when it comes to racial slurs is partially a result of certain groups continuing to use this word and others (nappy-headed comes to mind as well). I hear a black student say the n-word in my class and I feel like he/she has just said something equivalent to the s-word or f-word. It doesn't matter who you are, you shouldn't use it.

I agree with kericrump. Nas shouldn't have skipped those history classes. He might be able to catch up if he actually decides to speak to a 60 year old black man and listen. The respect thing, you know?
To say that he knows more about the black experience while while capitalizing on - I mean "shocking People into listening" to the very words that are insulting to black men and women is a pure capitalist cop out.
Nas is intelligent, he's just more interested in making money than respecting his own people.

  • Posted By: kericrump @ 01/11/2008 4:35:09 PM

    3. Are you saying that Sharpton and Jackson are out of touch?
Nah, but I do think they faced a different type of racism than young people feel today. A 60-year-old black man isn't getting racially profiled and pulled over just for being black. You got to live through that to know what that makes you feel like saying and doing as a young black person in America. No disrespect to the elders, but they should respect us and hear us out before attacking.

Nas is right. The elders did experience a different type of racism. When they got pulled over by the cops, they didn't just get harassed. Sometimes, they even got LYNCHED.

I thought Nas was intelligent. I was wrong.

Sorry, I show have said the United Negro College Fund.

  • Posted By: dr doug @ 01/08/2008 1:50:09 AM

This is stupid! If this is such a bad word, then it a bad word because of content, not who says it. Black peopl ehave always concerned themselves with the superficial. First they wanted to be called "colored people" (NAACP), then negroes, (American Negroe College Fund), then African-Americans and sometimes just Black. Who cares what ther are called or how they are referred to. What matters is how they are thought of.
I could go through my whole life without every uttering the N-word and still have disdain and dislike for black people. What's the point of all this?

  • Posted By: deployed2iraq @ 01/06/2008 3:42:58 AM

I cannot believe you even give this guy space in your magazine. He is yet another black man who is doing more harm to race relations in the United States than any white clothed confederate flag waving redneck. If I were a black man, I would be insulted to even be the same race as this idiot.

    • Posted By: shah mat @ 01/07/2008 9:11:05 PM

And you're not insulted yourself by bearing an immediate color association with some 'flag waving redneck'? WOW.

  • Posted By: shah mat @ 01/07/2008 8:56:44 PM

'DebbieToo'- Hypocrite. It's h(y)pocrite. 'tylerturden'- Bad race relations for Mexicans? Maybe you meant Mexican-AMERICANS. Bad race relations for people of middle eastern background?? Where? Through your television? And You know damn well you was not about to buy Nas album. Liar. And 'webspun'- looks like garbage is spewing out of you, also. Ready to get squashed? Anyway, since Nas is the topic for discussion here, two words- PAC LIVES...

  • Posted By: webspun @ 01/07/2008 12:05:11 PM

Nas is just a punk ass n-words, and he and others that spew this garbage should be squashed.

  • Posted By: tylerdurden @ 01/07/2008 11:56:06 AM

Obama has something to do with it? That doesn't make sense, or at least i haven't seen it or anyone in my comunity for that matter. A bad year for race relations? Maybe for mexican's, or people of middle eastern background. I feel like its better between white people and black people. I was going to buy this album until i read this interview. I rather save the sixty or so minutes of my life i will never be able to get back if i listen to anymore of his opinions.

  • Posted By: Debbie Too @ 01/07/2008 11:43:23 AM

Nas is a complete hipocrite and racist by saying we (black) can use the word but white people can't. What stupidity!!!!

  • Posted By: Computer Beethoven @ 01/07/2008 7:12:25 AM

Question number 4 is the very essence of racism. We can say it because we are black but you can't because you are white is just as racist as saying you can't vote because you are black. This moron is a racist. Period.
