The Greening of CES
Did they pay you to consult with them?
We're a nonprofit organization. They [just] pay for the offsets.
Have you done a trade show this big before?
This is by a lot of estimations the biggest trade show on earth. For us it's great to be a part of it.
What specifically happens at a hotel that you can offset?
Hotels are typically front end and back end. What the guests sees is front-end: the room, hallway lighting, the minibar. Then there's the cleaning of the towels, production of food and all the things that happen behind the scenes. You end up with an average figure and you come up with a per-night carbon footprint so that way you don't have to go to every specific hotel and calculate.
And what emissions are there on the show floor itself?
That's the energy used by the convention center and the hotels that are hosting the exhibits. It's electricity and it's gas.
The hotel would be operating whether or not this convention would be happening. Which suggests that any average traveler leaves a trail of emissions behind him.
I think every responsible consumer should offset as much of their personal life as they can. When you travel you have an impact on climate change. You can do something about it. I think it's simply responsible to offset the carbon emissions from your air travel, your hotel. By offsetting your travel you drive investment in clean energy.
I'm flying to Vegas on Sunday. My flight has apparently not been offset. What can I do?
Go to our Web site and on it simply put in where you're flying from [New York] and to [Las Vegas] and they'll tell you the carbon footprint of that flight. Roundtrip that's 2.19 tons of CO2 and that's about 4,800 pounds of CO2. To offset that is just over $12.
That's it?
What an offset really represents is the additional funds needed to make a project cost-effective. The good news is that if we want to fight climate change, there are solutions out there that don't cost too much.

Comment: In the book ???The World is Flat??? Tom Friedman asks for a vigorous plan to counter global warming. He suggests the Apollo moon landing program as the model for an energy development program.
This note is to alert you to the publication of my book ???Global Warming Can Be Conquered??? (ISBN 07 414 426 8 X). This book answers Mr. Friedman???s request.
In the book I justify the need for, and outline an ambitious plan for a new energy infrastructure called the Renewable- Fusion-Hydrogen (RFH) Energy System. This system offers TOTAL elimination of the emission of fossil carbon by 2050. It is NOT the 80% reduction by 2050, currently under discussion. The 80% reduction in carbon dioxide may slow warming but is inadequate to protect the biosphere for more than a few decades. RFH Energy System has the potential to push critical warming off for several centuries and in the interim provides all nations with energy independence.
My goal is to develop world wide interest in implementing the RFH Energy System. If you think the RFH Energy System makes sense please help me promote it by encouraging everyone you know to support its implementation. You can help by simply forward this note to everyone on your contact list, or if you buy the book lend it to others.
We must commence dramatic reduction in the emission of carbon dioxide within the next few years. If you have an alternate plan, promote it and if it is better than RFH energy I will help promote your system. We need to act!
You can review a brief outline of the system on my web site at:

Comment: Carbon offsets are a great way to reduce your climate impact and help us make clean energy cost less than dirty energy. If you are going to get in a plane, for whatever reason, you have a carbon footprint. If you turn on the lights in your home, heat your home or commute to work on a subway, you have a climate impact. If you eat food or wear clothes or use a computer for work that were made with energy, you have a carbon footprint.
And that gives you choices: do something or do nothing. Carbon offsets empower people to do have a positive impact against global warming.

Comment: I am glad to see CES showing such leadership on global warming, which threatens all of us. We need to reduce our emissions as much as possible but we also need to work, travel and live, so doing so in as green a way as possible is vital and CES is showing how we can do both. It just makes sense that if you are going to cause emissions from something you need to do, you would reduce emissions somewhere else, like with wind energy or energy efficiency.
I was pumped to read about all the new green products using recycled materials and less energy. We need to attack this from multiple angles.
