One more thing: Of course, his years as a pastor are very important and are relevant. I just think that his experience as a governor is the most relevant as he seeks the nation's support for his presidency.

Comment: I'm confused as to how Mr. Fineman can say in his article that Huckabee "does not believe in the science of evolution but does believe that the Bible is pretty close to literally true" and then go on to say, "and to them I say, let us turn to Paul's Letter to the Galatians, chapter six, verse seven, in which he writes: 'For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.'" So .. let me try to understand his logic. First, he says that Huckabee is wrong to believe the Bible in Genesis when it tells of Creation, and then he goes on to quote Galatians to prove Huckabee - and Genesis - is wrong? Just using ORDINARY logic and the human brain to reason things out, it seems to me that if he believes Galatians in the Bible enough to quote it as Truth, then he should believe ALL OF THE BIBLE as well. How can he throw out Genesis and count it as false, deciding in his own human "wisdom" that he knows better than God? Mr. Fineman, were you present during creation and do you know all the facts? How are you able to use Galatians like you know what you're talking about and slam Huckabee for believing in Genesis?? Here's a Bible quote for you, and reading it, you should shake in your boots Mr. Fineman: 2 Peter 2:1 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them???bringing swift destruction on themselves."
Fineman wasn't using Galatians to prove Huckabee wrong, he was using it to exemplify how, by exploiting the fears and passions of evangelicals for thirty years to build a reliable voting base, they have created a movement they can no longer control. Huckabee, as a candidate seemingly enthralled to this voting bloc, threatens to alienate the rest of the Republicans' so-called "big tent," namely moderate, secular and economic conservatives.
I couldn't agree more.
I couldn't agree less. What a bunch of sycophantic imbeciles.
I love how Fineman couches this article in terms of the nameless, faceless "some conservatives" who are nervous. As long as he keeps it vague, he doesn't have to deal with those pesky details like facts or actual journalism. Mike Huckabee is a Christian; he NEVER hides from this. But what of his experience makes him most qualified to be president? His years as a pastor or his 10+ years as a governor? Think about it.
The Republican party will someday implode. Evangelical and Conservative are simply not synonymous. The principles and constructs of each can find them quite at odds with each other. I think the Republican party is starting to look around and realize what strange bedfellows they are aligned with. The party will have to suffer through an overhaul to regain its political footing again.
Religion should be a sacred and personal experience. The way Huckabee is hawking his religion for personal gain cheapens his religion and makes him look shallow and crass.
Rush Limbaugh's comments today on how Huckabee isn't even a conservative by all normal principal landmarks resonates with me.
Howard Fineman is mad. He is very very mad. The primaries are not going the way he and his friends would like them to, and he has spent the day stamping his little feet and telling everyone how mad he is!
Perhaps he could get together with his good friend, Carolyn Washburn, and they could have one of their famous twit contest. Then maybe Howard would fee better!
In all honesty, how can one respond to Mr. Fineman's tripe? He didn't write an essay; this is merely a collage of assertions. It is the typical "inside the beltway" conventional wisdom, with nothing to support it.
Citizens are worryed about Rommey's religion, but they oversee Barack's cocain and majawana use.. Thats tells me America has got its head in a hole.
majawana and cocain? You are so concerned about these you can't even be bothered to spell them correctly? Or perhaps you learned to read and "rite" at the same place as NIchole from Little Rock?
I cannot vote for Huckabee becasue of his support for the "FairTax." This proposal entails a 23% federal sales tax on almost all purchases of goods and services, including health care and health insurance. THis would be in addition to any state sales taxes. My family is already struggling to cover our health care costs, and we had to take out a loan to keep our (crappy) health insurance. We are struggling to keep our refirigerator stocked. Huckabee touts the "FairTax" as a tax on wealth. If we paid 23% extra for our necessary medical costs, that would not be a tax on our wealth (we have none); it would be a tax on our credit-worthiness. It would drive my family to ruin, as it would many of yours. Remember that households below the poverty line have higher medical bills than the middle class or the rich. Huckabee's tax plan is is the most regressive plan ever! It taxes the poor and the middle class disproportionately. It will tax our living to the point that we cannot afford the meager luxuries we currently enjoy! Please, before you vote for any candidate, check his/her stance on the regressive "FairTax."
You know, I guess since ya'll aint from Arkansas, ya'll aint really heard what Hillary is REALLY about. She is about control, voting her husband as "roaming ambassador of the US", who do you think floats her fiances...CHINA, duh. I hear all this rhetoric about Huckabee, you should have lived here when Clinton was in power. Hillary is weak when it comes to National Defense, you think our military will be strong under her, she backed her own husband when he changed the rules of engagement, lowered our national defences...SHE BACKED HIM, and you think she will be stronger than Huckabee, yeah when pigs fly backwards, or fly period for that matter.
Huckabee is a great person, personally and politically. His ideas come across across to others as being "evangelical", maybe, but ten years ago you would have called them "good wholesome foundations of morality, " and now...Christian. He did a good thing for Arkansas as governor (domestic issues), and has led the governors association on many things concerning raising the bar on education (yeah even in Arkansas we can read and rite):) , also about our health care for children, Clinton didnt do this, Huckabee did. learn his background as a leader for all of your states, learn what he HAS accomlished before judging his "Christian values"
I was at his inagural ball the first time he won governor of Arkansas, hes a baptist preacher yeah, he doesnt dance, yeah but he an play the guitar and watch everyone dance. he was good, even though that day was about him, he didnt push his beliefs on everyone else. Spirituality is a personal belief system, and he is upstanding to even an Aethist like me when it comes to great morals and ethics....you decide.
So what, whats better, Christanity Man or Made in China Woman
Made in the North,
Raised in the south
Nichole from Little Rock, AR
"(yeah even in Arkansas we can read and rite):)"....What?
I don't have as big a problem with Huckabee's religious roots as I do with his ethical violations. He destroys government hard drives, takes money for speeches from special interest groups, sets up a gift registry when leaving office, tries to steal furniture from the governors mansion. There is a reason Judicial Watch named him one of the ten most corropt politicians alond with mainly democrats like Reed and Pelosi.
I'd prefer to report this as abuse, but you did'nt curse, you just lied and hyperbolated. Please go to Mike's site and click on the Truth Squad link to get the real story.
I did not lie even Fred Thompson's site had a news release about the destruction of the hard drives and google judicial watch. I am supposed to believe Mike's site. This from the guy who couldn't answer a simple question about his net tax increase or who insults Romney personally for his comparrision ads and then says I am running a positive campaign.
Even though I support McCain I would have no problem voting for a Christian, but like many religions some are more extreme than others. It seems many Evangelicals believe the Apocalypse is right around the corner (check out the "Left Behind Series" of books, including books for kids!). Is this what Huckabee believes? If elected would he need to see the prophecy of Armageddon through? Would he feel the need to aggresively spread The Word to other non-Christian nations? These are the most extreme examples of what makes me nervous about him would need to know more about his beliefs before I would consider voting for him. There are already enough people dying in the world in the name of God.
The man Governed Arkansas for 10+ years and made no such efforts as you mention. Is Mitt going to turn us into a big mutinational corporation? Is Rudy going to litigate us all into some legal hell? Is McCain going to run us all like an air squadron? Is Fred going to treat us all as extras on his big set?
Being the Governor or Arkansas and President of the US are not the same thing. You can't equate the things you mention with religious extremism. I like Huckabee and agree with on many issues but since he spent 10 years as a minister I'd need to know more of his religious views before even considering casting my vote his way. Is he a wolf in sheep's clothing?
Let's also look at his ethical violations while governor.
I shudder when I hear a voter say "he seems like a genuine person, or a likable guy." If you use the word" seems" in a sentence describing what made you choose a presidential candidate, you should be appointed a handler or a sane family member before you cast your ballot. And this is especially true with those voting for Huckabee on his value as a likable guy. It should be a federal offense to admit in public or much less vote for a president on the premiss of likabillaty in this day and age, If a block of or a majority of voters ever again get a president elected in any on whether he seems nice, the sheer naivity of it should bring on the calimity it provokes.

Comment: CORRECTIONl Gee, by you standards, even Lincoln was NOT qualified to be president!
Oh wait, I remember reading that the Mormons opposed Lincoln's election because the Mormons supported slavery with the South.
Gee, by you standards, even Lincoln was qualified! Oh wait, I remember reading that the Mormons opposed Lincoln's election because the Mormons supported slavery with the South.
First the Mormon church didn't support slavery nad Joseph Smith ran for president on an antislavery platform. The Southern Baptist did support slavery and were in fact established a a break away segregationists church.
Romney needs to be held accountable for his record of extreme liberalism while governor in Mass.
Why does Romney get a free ride from his liberal track record? Just because he declares he had a new revelation to shed his formal official track record as a liberal is illogical and intellectually insulting. Would anyone accept this tactic from Hillary or Al Gore? How about McCain or Huckabee? Just because the rich man now says he is now a conservative doesn't fly. Just tell this to all of those unborned babies killed because Romney was championing abortion rights. They know Romney is a PHONY!
The Presidency is just too important to entrust it to a man of questionable character and a proven flip-flopper. Ronald Reagan proved that his own conservative conversion over a span of years in supporting other conservative candidates, raising money for other candidates, and supporting numerous conservative issues. He would have disavowed any connection to Romney as Romney has never campaigned or raised money for other conservative candidates or even championed one conservative issue. Instead, Romney just sat back and planned his false conservative conversion to fool everyone since even the Democrats would not welcome him as a liberal candidate on their side. Romney???s commitment to conservative social issues is another big lie.
As governor, Romney never had to make any hard decisions or lead through difficult times since he just toed the line with the rest of the liberal Massachusetts politicians. As such, Romney never established any real leadership skills. Sure he is polished and seemingly polite, but having money and going to private and finishing schools will do that for you and open lots of doors; just ask Teddy Kennedy.
Romney is a liar, an honors graduate from the John Kerry school of flip-flopping, an idiot in foreign affairs (he wants attorneys to tell him what to do-what a loser, but spoken like the fake he is and the in-experienced foreign policy boob he is), fled from military service, and he is beholden to big business and big time Republican Bigwigs. He is a part of the establishment and, as a rich boy, he has no idea what life is for an average person; and that we don???t need in the next president.
Mitt Romney is a poll-driven politician with no principles, his finger is sore from wetting it and holding it up in the wind to see which way it is blowing. Romney is NOT to be trusted to tell the truth! Support anyone but Romney, based on his official track record and proven record of flip-flops and lies. Beside, the Democrats are drooling and ready to jump on Romney???s pattern of Kerry-ish record of flip-flops? They see Romney as very vulnerable and easy to defeat! Don???t support Romney and by default, give the Democrats the White House!
Wow, look at all the evangelicals squirm like the poor Mormons who have been taking all the hits lately. Isn't it interesting what happens when you attack with a two edged sword- you can get slain with the same sword you are swinging. As predicted, by taking all the issues out of the contest and attacking a person's ability to serve based on his or her religious beliefs, the Republican party is going to become so divided that almost any Democrat will look better than the Republican choice. Who would want a washed up actor, a maniac veteren, or a person who earns a living by taking money from church goers and is from Arkansas. Not me, those men do not exemplify my idea of living the American dream.
Maniac veteran? As a Rudy supporter and veteran I can't see how anyone could label Sen McCain in such a derogatory way. John McCain is an American hero, statesman and an asset to this country. I happen to believe that Rudy is the most qualified executive to lead the nation at this time. However, if McCain were to ultimately win the presidency the U.S. could do a lot worse. By the way, on what basis is he a maniac?
Only a rich boy who never served in the military could spout such nonsense.

Seriously, my sister loves Ron Paul and for the life of me I can't understand the obsession. For sake of argument, let's say one really wants radical change. And, let's say that Ron Paul stands for radical change, precisely of the flavor of change that this person desires.
How can a vote for Ron Paul be justified, simply when considering his complete inability to accomplish anything? He's full of radical changing ideas and talking points (many of which I think are just nuts, but that's besides the point), but he's done nothing but talk about them for years. Sure, his senate voting record reflects his convictions, but often as the sole dissenter. He stands alone. He does not have support of either Republicans or Democtats. Even if you like what he is saying, wouldn't it be important to elect someone who can actually do it? Wanting to do it is only half of the battle.
I say, stand up and cast your vote for Mitt Romney. He has reasonable proposals and he KNOWS how to get things done. He's proven it time and again.
Mitt knows how to get business things done. Conservative government policy and foreign policy, he does not.
Besides, Mitt will stay true to his rich old self and change back to a liberal next year to hang out with Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry, his neighbors.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Ron Paul is a fraud and he works very hard to hide it.
Based on official US Congressional Records, Ron Paul has been the author of over $400 Million in successfully inserted add-ons pork spending for his Texas district.
Paul identifies which huge spending bills are going to be successfully passed and then makes the back room deals to add-on these pork amounts for his district. Paul then votes against these bills in order to claim and fool gullible folks into believing that he votes against pork all the while being very clever to try to hide his tracks.
He???s a fraud in his other positions, too.
Everyone has a religion, they just don't know the it's name.
Interesting article. I am a Democrat but I actually like Huckabee as a person. He seems warm and genuine and speaks from the heart, not from some bullet sheet of talking points. However I am, VERY wary of his compassionate conservatism talk. We heard all this before. Remember George Bush, "the uniter". He turned out to be the most extreme and divisive president ever and he was the dream candidate of the Religious GOP. so thanks but no thanks Huckabee. been there, done that, not falling for it again.
Huck-a-billy go back to Dogpatch you Jesus Freak!
If you Evangelicals don't get back in line HIllary Clinton will be your next President.
Do you want that!?
Come on! This old Romney attack trick is so over. It just doesn't work. You should try another trick with more immagination and that is more substantial. And try to use something other than the comic pages for your inspiration, that is, if your vocabulary will allow you to.
I really can't stand Huckabee, but that's just wrong.
We should run, not walk away from candidates who are too religious. It is obvious that religion is now, has been for centuries and will continue to be the cause of most of the worlds problems. We must remember that it is the President who chooses who will serve on the Supreme Court. The Court is in charge of interpreting the Constitution. Our freedoms is literally in the hands of the Supreme Court.
