Huckabee's reliance on an evangelical base is overstated. He is tied for first nationally in todays rasmussen daily and has been in first or second for over a month. His message, his record, and his plans, resonate with alot of people, myself included. He worked hard while Governor for 10+ years at being Governor, and that meant working with a blue legislature to get things done, which he did. It is true that taxes/fees were raised over the course of his tenure, but things were done with the money ie. Roads and Schools, the size of Government did not grow past the expected population growth ratio, and he left it 1Billion dollars richer.

I'm confused as to how Mr. Fineman can say in his article that Huckabee "does not believe in the science of evolution but does believe that the Bible is pretty close to literally true" and then go on to say, "and to them I say, let us turn to Paul's Letter to the Galatians, chapter six, verse seven, in which he writes: 'For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.'" So .. let me try to understand your logic. First, you say that Huckabee is wrong to believe the Bible in Genesis when it tells of Creation, and then you go on to quote Galatians to prove Huckabee - and Genesis - is wrong?

Just using ORDINARY logic and the human brain to reason things out, it seems to me that if you believe Galatians in the Bible and quote it as Truth, then you should believe ALL OF THE BIBLE as well. How can throw out Genesis and count it as false, deciding in your own human "wisdom" that you know better than God? Mr. Fineman, were you present during creation and do you know all the facts? How are you able to use Galatians like you know what you're talking about and slam Huckabee for believing in Genesis??

Here's a Bible quote for you, and reading it, you should shake in your boots Mr. Fineman:
2 Peter 2:1 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them???bringing swift destruction on themselves."

Fineman operates by the wisdom of this world and has been blinded by its temporary carekeeper. Remember the darkness hates the light. Fineman has demonstrated that he hates the light so he can't help it anymore than we can demand a blind man to see and avoid stumbling over an obstacle. You know what to do for Fineman; he needs God to humble him.

Huckabee wants to govern. The media wants to talk about religion. Huckabee has always been open about his faith. But he was also a governor for 10 and a half years. I would say that has more to do with how he would govern than his years as a pastor. Fineman - why don't you ask him about his years as a governor? That came AFTER his pastorship. And about those sermons - hello????? Why don't you ask him for a copy of his campaign speeches? HE PROBABLY DOESN'T HAVE ANY!! Haven't you seen how he speaks on the stump? He doesn't speak from a written text. Why would his preaching style be any different? You're so determined to turn Huckabee's beliefs into something sinister that you start reaching - and look foolish. Try to stick to journalism. We might respect you more.

Agreed! But we all know that the wisdom of this world governs and blinds those who belong to it. We also know where they are going to end up based on their own choices and actions. If support for Huckabee keeps growing, then we can conclude that others are hearing his words and the words are resonating with them. No matter how many hatchet jobs Fineman tries, he will always be on the wrong side.

I have a time and place that I was saved by the grace of God, a time and place where I was called by the Lord to carry HIS Gospel, and a time and place that I was called by God to each church that I have pastored.
My query is this: Given the gospel???s goals are the salvation of lost souls, and the spiritual well-being and growth of the saved individuals; given we, as ministers have only our influence on all of the above and that through the gospel; given we are to???at all costs???endeavor to NOT impede our ability to influence ANY of mankind (if anyone for any reason will not hear us due to some ???flaw??? or shortcoming {real or imagined} of our own)??????.how have you, Mr. Huckabee, rationalized in your mind that a preacher has ANY God-given business in politics?
God doesn???t see Dems. or Reps., he just see souls. You, sir, HAVE impeded your ability to influence ANYONE who is a card-carrying member of any other political affiliation.
I am certain that you and I do not see eye-to-eye in doctrine, nor in practice of our religious beliefs. BUT I am certain of one thing: there are millions in the country who know no better than to feel that ???a preacher is a preacher, is a preacher???; that we???re vanilla and all cut from the same cloth. You and I know that we are not. You, sir, because you are carrying a banner other than that of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, do???indeed???do harm to the vocation to which God-called men aspire.
I would adjure you to search your heart, and chose one or the other: Leave politics, and back to bearing your cross, or turn in your credentials as an ordained minister???admitting a minister of the Gospel needs to tend to his sheep, not a political platform. IF God called you into either arena, it wouldn???t be both; IF he called you into one, pick it and leave the other.
By way of calling to your remembrance, below are a very few of the scriptures that are pertinent to the thoughts and beliefs ascribed to in this message:
    Phil.1: 27 - Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
2Tim.2: 4 - No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
Gal.5: 1 - Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
2Pet.2: 20 - For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
    1Tim.3:7 - Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without;

    Respectfully submitted,

    A Minister

Republicans have used the social moderates and conservatives for 30 years. Democrats have used blacks as their "slave class" in much the same way. When election time nears, they are told how bad the people on the other side are. "Those liberals want to take your guns" or "Whitey wants to keep the black man down". Finally the truth is coming out. Huckabee is a Republican who has moral values but, also believes in helping the less fortunate in society and the money Republicans hate him! On the Democratic side you have Obama who would change this country forever and what do the power brokers of the Democratic party say? "Get back on the plantation boy, you need to do our bidding and be more appreciative of what we give you and your kind". The truth is, fiscal conservatives want your children's money and social liberals want your childrens minds. The wealthy ruling class of this country need a peasant class and the social liberal hate groups want to re-make America into their own little perverted playground. Obama and Huckabee threaten their power so they must be stopped!

    • Posted By: blurmon @ 01/07/2008 3:39:41 PM

Super Irony that each party's peasant class is now causing hand wringing and cries of anguish from the big power brokers. Yeah! Power to the People!

From my perspective, Mike Huckabee is being pushed on ignornant voters as the "Christian" candidate. Unfortunately, many so-called Christians have been brain-washed into believing they cannot judge another Christian's actions, motivations, etc. I don't care how many times someone says they are a believer, just because they say they are means nothing. A real Christian's beliefs will drive their actions. Please pay attention to what he does as opposed to what he says. He is the establishment's version of what a Christian should be; please don't fall for it.

  • Posted By: carnabylane @ 01/06/2008 7:50:39 AM

Huckabee is the best hope for Democrats to win this election because it will galvanize the apathetic to get out and prevent this nation from becoming the "Christian Nation" that the right wing evangelicals are trying to make it into. You don't have to be a Christian to be a loyal American.

    • Posted By: arodoll @ 01/07/2008 3:23:37 PM

Since you are so worried about the US becoming a ???Christian Nation???, I suggest you do not read our Constitution or that dollar or quarter in your pocket. This country was founded on Christian philosophies that include the tolerance of separating church and state and allowing for all religion (or non-religion) to be accepted without fear of persecution. You are right when you say that you don???t have to be a Christian to be a loyal American but remember it was the Christian philosophy that gave you those rights in the first place. Try to go over to Iraq and say you don???t have to be a Muslim to be a loyal countryman and see how far that gets you. I???m tired of the rhetoric that if you are a Christian you are a closed-minded, evangelical fanatic out to strip the rest of the world of its rights. Sure, there are fanatics of every religion that push boundaries too far, Christianity is no exception. But it is truly scary that many liberals are absolutely terrified of Christians and their pseudo ulterior motives. If Huckabee was Agnostic or Hindu, would that make him more acceptable to you? If so, I most certainly will pray for you.

  • Posted By: RachelJ123 @ 01/06/2008 7:24:56 PM

We are not in Iraq! Separation of church and state are not in our constitution. Frankly I am tired of hearing that nonsense. To be a Christian or a Pastor does not make you separate Americans. What about Obama? He goes to church. Are we going to bash him for that reason. He was raised a Muslim which is more scary to me more than Mormonism or Christianity. At least we are not teaching our people everyone else is an infidel and must be killed. Just because Huckabee is a Christian does not eliminate him from being able to run for President. For gosh sakes, he is not planning to make everyone a Southern Baptist. That is what the state is about, making everyone the same religion. Jimmy Carter taught Sunday School classes. What is wrong with us when we have to be afraid and try to make everyone else afraid because a person is a Christian. I am a supporter of him because he is a man who appears to have great integrity. Hopefully I will get the chance to know his policies more for myself instead of what the media or anyone else says. RachelJ123

    • Posted By: diplogirl71 @ 01/07/2008 3:18:10 PM

Whoa, not to be rude, but did your email really say that separation of church and state are NOT in our constitution? You might want to read the first amendment to the constitution, which rather explicitly establishes a separation between the church and the state. Also, and again, I don't mean to be rude, but Muslims do NOT believe members of other religions are infidels and should be killed. Extremist Muslims might believe this, but they are a VERY small minority of the Muslim population. The Koran does not say that members of other religions are infidels and should be killed, and neither do most Muslims believe this. Finally, if I am correct, Obama is not a Muslim (not that it matters), but rather, a member of the Church of Christ, and therefore, a Christian. Religion, however, really has nothing to do with personal values, integrity, or leadership ability, and I think you are correct in making your decision based on policies rather than religious affiliation.

Any good Catholic will tell you we think the Baptists are arrogant fools who are quite "unchristian" when they blindly listen to their overzealous pastors...

Hey "Evangels" - STOP THINKING YOU ARE THIS NATION'S RELIGION! You are nothing but a bunch of men forcing your women to "graciously" submit !

As for you "pastors - You AREN'T preaching the word of God when you act like this ~ you are simply arrogant, power-driven "theologians ???" with a tainted agenda.

"the shock troops of the party" - you bigot! Replace Christian with any other group - black, Muslim, gay, atheist... - and Mr. Fineman would be expelled from journalism for an article like this. This article is an example of the sad reality that many in the country fear Christians. What has Huck advocated that's just so dang scary? Why is it just fine for secular leaders to lead Christians, but not for Christian leaders to lead the secular? BTW, why is it so important for Huck to talk about his preacher days, but not for Romney to talk about his Mormon faith? Who's has a religious test for office now? The fact is neither should be required to talk about thier faith experience, but both should be allowed to. Isn't religious freedom one of the main founding principles of this country?

    • Posted By: angelus1967 @ 01/07/2008 9:47:59 AM

That doesn't seem to be a bigoted statement...they HAVE tried to tuen Evangelicals into the shock troops of the Repub party, and it has worked.
The problem I have with christians leading secular people is that you people seem to have a need to preach and attempt to convert, neither of which i need in my life. Keep your religion out of government; freedom of religion is also freedom FROM religion if I so choose!

  • Posted By: GreatDane @ 01/05/2008 10:37:47 PM

So I am described as part of a "fundamentalist monster". I'm a conservative Republican who is a Christian. Last I looked at the Constitution, we still have freedom of religion (more for nonChristians than Christians, granted). Stew77, do you call the Islamists "fundamentalist monsters"? If not, why not? I can guess. Fear. They would come to kill you. All I want to do is vote as a conservative. I'm a 63 year old woman who has always been conservative, even before it was popular to hate conservatives. Why do you depend on namecalling? I suppose it's the challenge of using normal words in understandable sentences or something. Ann

    • Posted By: angelus1967 @ 01/07/2008 9:44:54 AM

I don't believe that Stew77 was depending on name calling, he was merely stating a fact; the Repubs have created a fundamentalist monster. And yes, I will call the Islamists fundamentalist monsters with no fear of them coming to kill me. I do not have any fear of them at all; they are only human and if they choose to kill me for speaking, well there is not much I can do about that.
All fundamentalists are monsters in my book. Go ahead and vote conservative, that is your right. Just do not feel it is your right or duty to preach to me or say that god is on your side as good ol' Huck does on occaision.

He obama will not win anyways, wait till new york, florida and my stae california come. Because Jewish, hispanic, and caucasion, democratioc primaries voters here will over=welminly vote for Hillary, because we vote with our educated heads not with our hearts, unlike the dome hikcs from Iowa and New hamphire!!If collin powell ran i would vote for him in heartbeat. One of the biggest investors in the insurance industry is prominent democrat Warren Buffet. Why don't democrat candidates attack him like they do Exxon's CEO? Because he's one of their own. By the way, the labor unions, the NEA and trial attorneys own the democrat party. Our schools are failing our children and attorneys are leaches. But Obama/Hillary/Edwards don't say a thing about how attorneys hurt health care.

  • Posted By: eddiewhere @ 01/06/2008 10:52:48 PM

THE INSURANCE COMPANIES RUN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. EVERY CANDATE FEELS THE INSURANCE COMPANIES MUST SUSTAIN THEIR PROFITS. THIS IS WHY NO REPUBLICAN CAN 'FIX HEALTH CARE'. WHEN IT COMES TO DOMESTIC POLICIES LIKE ENERGY, HEALTH CARE, CHILD CARE , MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUTS, OUTSOURCING, THE REPUBLICAN GET 'DWARFED', THE ONLY ISSUE THAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE IS TERRORISM. NO ONE AGREES WITH AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, SO THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT EVEN HAVE LEVERAGE ON THIS ISSUE. MAYBE IF BIN LADEN IS CAPTURED THE REPUBLICANS CAN TWIST THE STORY AND CLAIM THEY INDEED HAVE A SUCCESSFUL FOREIGN POLICY. THIS WOULD LEAD THE TIGHTENING OF CIVIL LIBERITIES IE. PATRIOT ACT. HUCKABEE
PROVIDED THE BEST ANSWERS. McCAIN ONLY ADVANTAGE IS FOREIGN POLICY WHERE HE DWAFS EVERY CANDIDIATE, REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT. I LIKE RON PAUL'S RESPONSE IN THE DEBATE. HE CLEARLY SHOWED THAT THE CONSTITUTION HAS BEEN ABUSED AND IGNORED.

  • Posted By: eddiewhere @ 01/06/2008 9:32:53 PM

HUCKABEE WANTS TO CHANGE HEALTH CARE. THAT IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT. IT MEANS LESS MONEY FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANIES WHICH DOMINATE WALL STREET AND FUND THE REPUBLICAN ESTABLISMENT.

  • Posted By: GOPFan1974 @ 01/06/2008 7:51:14 PM

"Republican candidates have learned how to "talk the language." They know that Christians are basically compassionate and trusting people, and therefore prone to being gullible and easily manipulated. They know that Christians have short memories and are desperate to be accepted at the king's table (largely a result of the church-growth movement and mega-church mentality).
It is at this point that much blame should be cast at the feet of the leaders of the so-called Religious Right. They have proven themselves to be much more interested in enriching their "ministries" (and themselves in the process) than they are in standing uncompromisingly for the truth. The infatuation with power and success has made them weak and vulnerable.
As a result, George W. Bush and Karl Rove have made mincemeat out of the Religious Right. They have shown everyone that once you win the support of the Christian Right with rhetoric, you can get by with just about anything. Christians are horrible at holding Republicans accountable.
Hence, neocon Republicans such as Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, and even Rudy Giuliani are all currently receiving fractured support from the Christian Right. However, you can mark this down: the Christian Right (with few exceptions) will eventually coalesce around whoever wins the Republican nomination--no matter who it is. You see, it's all about political partisanship. Principles are only something we talk about during off-election years."
