Photographing the Philadelphia Story Covering the political conventions is a massive undertaking for a news magazine. NEWSWEEK sent 30 staffers to Philadelphia; all needed housing, transportation and more. But the most complicated task fell to the photo department. Photo editor Sue Miklas, operations director Kelli Grant and researchers Alexandra Daley and Michelle Molloy had to assign, edit and get the work of Najlah Feanny, Ron Haviv, David Hume Kennerly, Charles Ommanney and Mark Peterson to New York. In all, they produced 426 rolls of film--and some wonderful photographs. "They did an absolutely amazing job under very trying circumstances," says Director of Photography Sarah Harbutt.
A New Life of RFKEvan Thomas spent more than four years researching his new book, "Robert Kennedy: His Life" (496 pages. Simon & Schuster). But Thomas's ties to the Kennedys go back much further than that. Thomas's father, also Evan Thomas, was JFK's editor for "Profiles in Courage." Even so, Thomas had to work hard to win the cooperation of the family. "I gradually convinced them that I wasn't doing a hatchet job," Thomas says. An excerpt from his book, which will be published Sept. 5, begins on page 48.
Return to Kosovo "The worst part of wartime trauma isn't living through the events, it's later on, when the memories settle in," says Washington correspondent Donatella Lorch, who once worked as a relief worker. That's one reason she and MSNBC.com international editor Preston Mendenhall traveled back to the war-torn region to revisit the fate of a village they first covered one year ago. Their moving story is on page 35.
