The other employees on the Letterman show are other union employees, and their contract doesn't happen to be up. When the WGA strike is over, and it's time for the craft unions to strike, the WGA members won't cross their picket lines either, any more than SAG -- which also isn't on strike but may well be when their own contract ends -- is honoring the WGA picket line and refusing to attend the Golden Globes. Anybody who belongs to a union, and many of us who don't, understands that the person whose strike shuts me out of the workplace today may be the person my strike shuts out of the workplace tomorrow.

What about all the other 100-some non-writer people who work on Leno's show and other shows? Maybe the WGA is in the right, but that doesn't give them the right to put others out of work. Those that will never get a cut of anything yet have mouths to feed and mortgages to pay. Why doesn't the WGA care about them? One can't get around the fact that the direct cause of them being out of work is because WGA forced the writers to stop working, even if you're against the AMPTP.

Who cares if the waivers are consistent or not, or if writers don't work in rock quarries? The only thing that matters is that the writers are in the write. This constant trivializing of every political or labor dispute into some sort of game, where points and strategy are all the press will cover, is destructive to American society. If Newsweek can't bring itself to care about the merits enough ot actually cover the merits (the are merely alluded to in this piece, not addressed in any way) then maybe its writers should put their OWN pencils down.
