Comment: Psychiatry is a joke unfortunately. They try to create dependence on more psychiatry and popping pills (which studies show, often don't work).

One source says "Psychiatry is a medical specialty which exists to study, prevent, and treat mental disorders in humans." Now it's just about pushing pills. And those 'doctors' are all in bed with the pharmaceutical industry. Their concern has shifted from helping people to profiting.

Comment: If she was a black man behaving in the same way they would diagnose schizphrenia - bi-polar is less stimatising for us poor white folk, but both diagnosis are equily scientifically invalid and unreliable constructs (this is why medicine and psychiatary will never be really the same thing Dr Leuchter sorry). She is distressed and I don't blame her.

Comment: For the past 2 years the media has been posting horrible things about Britney. Don't they have anything else to do. Her Her X-Husband is a big part of her issues. The used her for her money, and publicity to get his self a career. He dIvored her, and took her babies. How would any woman feel. C'Mon people. I give credit for handeling the whole scenerio for this long.. At least she can get up in the morning at look in the mirror, and still continue her career. Thats more than any normal person can handle. If she by chance has Bi-Polar . That is no ones business. That something to be dealt with with her doctors. If people had any sense, They would quit talking ***, and try and help her. If was her Parent I would be RAGED. Maybe if she could see her kids, she might not be so Depressed. There are people who lose custudy of there kids for neglect, abuse, and they still visit, or get them back. This whole situation is wrong. Every time I see stuff about her it Pisses me off... Will everyone be Happy when they have have pushed her to her Grave..To the Public - Media FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO.

Comment: Hasn't anyone ever considered that she may just be dealing with post-partum depression? I had severe symptoms for more than two years after each of my first two children were born. Thankful for all the support from my family. I cringe at the way the media are picking her apart. Whatever Issues Britney has to overcome, she deserves postive care and support rather than such intense negative scrutiny.

Comment: I am a Psychiatrist, and I agree that the HIPAA laws can hinder health care. Unfortunately, there can never be a perfect balance between privacy and proper information access. I agree that 'Dr Phil' has embarrassed himself professionally and should be disciplined. BTW, can't wait til the Scientologist wacko's start posting any minute now.... grab your tinfoil helmet and some popcorn.

Comment: dear moonlitwater..Been all these places. It gets so frustrating because the HIPA law is suppose to protect people but instead with Mental illness it henders proper treatment, proper medications, the true complete plan to recovery is EXPERIENCE as anyone that has "lived with", researched, supported, or had to stand by and watch (BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THAT LOVE THEM, KNOW THEM, AND CARE ABOUT THEIR LONG TERM RECOVERY, HAVE THEIR HANDS AND FEET TIED UP BECAUSE OF THE PRIVACY ACT...I have an adult son that is very sick. He was diagnosed 5 years ago with Bipolar 1 (but according to the physician,,really was more schizophrenic, but did not want to label him...little did I know at the time she was not doing him any favors...If you got it You got to treat it.....Anyway he is now is jail for breaking and entering and burgulary..He stole nothing..They found him in the living room, sitting in a chair, Bible in lap..He told the officers, God had sent him there to find his son...He has now been in jail for 3 months, isolation because they say he does not choose to get along with others....HELLO They don't know he was MR Congeniality before he got this disease.....They dont know he was on his way to playing NFL football. They dont know he was at the top of his class at Liberty University..They don't know he has just began his preaching career...They dont know the courts will not even let him see his son because of his disease....They dont know anything Yet when something happens people say WHY DIDN"T SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING...As you say contact NAMI. Let them know what is going on...We can only change these things by doing something as a nation......Just think if everyone that is dealing with mental illness as a patient or supporter called NAMI and said Lets actually do something in numbers....

Comment: It is very difficult to get adults with severe mental illness to seek and stay with treatment and medications. When they feel better with their meds, they often decide they don't need them and go off of them, and revert back to their former problems that brought them to the psychiatrist, mental health services, homelessness, drug/alcohol abuse and victimization by others. Families are often at a loss to help, because no one providing services can talk to the parents or family if the ill person is an adult. The ill person often cannot advocate for themself, as they may be confused, in denial, or in crisis. The mental health system in California, at least, is hard to navigate even if you are a completely well person trying to help a loved one. SSI and MediCal are denied regularly for people who really need it and you have to keep reapplying or get a lawyer to help you get the services needed. Something in this country has to change, since the numbers of mentally ill persons is increasing rapidly. Some estimates are that 10-25% or more of the people in this country are dealing with some form of mental illness. This is a crisis. NAMI or the National Association for Mental Illness is trying to get rid of the stigma of talking about mental illness in families and individuals. In California, we are trying to get our legislators to get insurance parity, or equal treatment for mental illness, by the insurance industry. If you are a parent or family member of a mentally ill adult and need help getting help and services for your loved one, contact your local NAMI chapter for information. I am a parent of a very sick adult daughter and still trying.

Comment: This woman with her record makes Spears look lucid. Has 2 felonies, 2 assault, 1 dwi, 1 driving with out a license, and many bad check convictions. Shows herself on webcam with kids in the room. Some kind of game for her. Google southdakotagov and read the arrest record and psychiatrist report. Fruit does not follow far from the tree. Never served a day and still has custody because she is nuts.

Comment: Kudos to Ms. Jenny Hontz and Dr. Leuchter for giving a very insightful discussion of the "72 hour involuntary commitment". It was excellent and very informative.

Like I have posted here before, I too had this same type of 3-day commitment in the state of Colorado back in 2002 (I suffer from psychotic bipolar, the brain disease known as schizo-affective disorder). Colorado has the similar involuntary commitment laws as California has. All of the states have similar laws now, as does Europe.

This 3-day commitment is basically the modern-day version of the insanity commitment laws from 100 years ago. The main difference between the two is that nowadays we are committed for 3 days, given medication, and then we are free to go back to our family.

100 years ago we would have been committed (there were no medications available) and we would have been committed for life. Thank g*d to the medicine researchers for helping us.

So for those of you on here who want to pooh-pooh the medications, you are simply ignoring history. Or maybe you just didn't know this fact of "commitment history". Because for some reason, our society is trying to keep this history a big secret. Supposedly, "to help people like me out". I guess because society thinks I can't handle this truth.

Well, more accurately, maybe it is society that can't handle the truth.

Thank you to Newsweek for finally talking about this subject. A subject that society has kept quiet for way too long. It is about time to finally get it out in the open and to talk about it.

Because without the brain disease medications we now have, there would be 5 million Americans locked up against their will on lifelong involuntary commitments in insane asylums. That's how the brain meds have helped us.

(1% with paranoid schizophrenia or 2.5 million people, 1% with psychotic bipolar or 2.5 million people, 1% with psychotic depression or 2.5 million people and 500,000 mothers with postpartum psychosis - 5 million people is a very conservative figure)

(Sorry for the ??? marks below!)
