Wernicke's area: Analyzes the sounds in both written and spoken words

Broca's area: Coordinates the movements of lips, jaws and tongue to produce speech; helps convert letters to sounds

Angular gyrus: Links visual input with the stored sounds of language

A reading problem

In dyslexic kids, Wernicke's area and the angular gyrus--areas involved in deciphering words--are underactive. Groca's area--the center of speech production--is overactive. Other frontal regions involved in higher-level reasoning are unaffected.
