FACT CHECK

Sliming Obama

Dueling chain e-mails claim he's a radical Muslim or a 'racist' Christian. Both can't be right. We find both are false.

If a muslim becomes a president of USA,what is the big deal.Is he not a human being or to b a muslim is that shameful.World needs to look into this as the 60 odd muslim countries future is very nasty situation then if we countinue to ignore and look down upon this community.

Most of the people I work with who buy into such obviously outrageous mudslinging are eager to buy into anything negative - even if it is ridiculous to discredit a black man. I am a white man in a red state that voted for the best qualified individual , who happened to be a thoughtfull , intellectual black American who will put his love for all people and his country ahead of party politics or personal convenience. I have learned a great deal about my country and my fellow countrymen during this election cycle. In the year 2008 , the greatest and most freedom loving nation on earth should not even be having a discussion on race. It should not exist as a question. When we reach that point we can truly say we are great & free for all. The second thing I have learned is that old P.T. Barnum quote that no one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American public. The Republican party plays extremely well to the fears and ignorance of many average citizens.

what makes your country great, is that any one can say the most outrageous comments and nobody gives a damm !! god bless america, dr. david burch, london uk

A reply to Bruce&tennis: Hmm... well it looks to me that YOU did not finish your quote. You stated that Newsweek said, "...we've seen no evidence that he preaches hatred..." but you left out the crucial part of this arguement, "...hatred of or discrimination against whites," Which is in fact true. Read more carefully next time, okay?

As for Jrmurphy8, I totally agree with you. Barack Obama is one of the only candidates to ever bring both parties together, and get a pretty good margin of supporters from the opposite party.

  • Posted By: Bruce&tennis @ 05/07/2008 12:51:04 AM

Kind of makes you wonder how "investigative" these reporters are...wouldn't you say? Especially since, "...we've seen no evidence that he preaches hatred..." hum, maybe Newsweek needs to spend more time checking their information.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 06/10/2008 3:07:23 PM

Maybe you should post some evidence to the contrary, you hypocrite.

I am surprised that no one mentions that people like me (lifelong repub, college grad, working cl;ass, white senior citizen, military eexperience) will be voting for Obama. Many others feel the way I do -- Repub policies have nearly ruined the country and McCain is too close to Bush. however, if Hillary is the nominee, I will find it difficult to vote for her. and probably settle for the lesser of two evils by going for McCain.

Are you kidding with this Rev. Wright. The bombing of Japan was justified and saved many U.S. troops. The Japanese attacked us. This hateful preacher ought to ask the Japanese what they think of the U.S. after countless millions of Toyota's, Honda's, etc. Send this clown to Libya and the Obama family with him. See if Ms. Obama can make 300k per year in the homeland.

    • Posted By: marinabreeze @ 04/04/2008 10:56:54 AM

But isn't that the problem right there? Too many Americans thinking the world should revolve around them? Isn't that hateful? The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki may have saved American lives (which is to some degree debatable since the war was winding down even without the bombs), but it killed many Japanese civilians and made more sick with glowing radiation for decades to come. Just because they did not have the fortune of being born American means that their lives are worth squat? And, even if YOU believe so, Christianity was not designed to be pro-American and anti-everyone else, so the fact that Rev. Wright, a Christian pastor, preached about the wrong of the atomic bomb might not be pro-American, but it does recognize the CHRISTIAN principle that EVERY life is sacred, not just the lives of those who look like ourselves.

  • Posted By: marinabreeze @ 04/04/2008 10:48:59 AM

It kills me when someone tells the truth about the racial divide in the US and they're labeled a "racist." Rev. Wright is not the only one who mentioned America's culpability in 9/11...the late Jerry Falwell anyone? But Falwell wasn't considered to be anything less than a patriot, but Wright is? And about AIDS, it might seem ridiculous, but considering the Tuskegee experiments from a number of decades ago in which blacks were deliberately left untreated for illnesses so they could be monitored (but told they were in fact being treated), it's not that much of a leap. America is my country and I'm loyal to it, but loyalty does not mean pretending that everything we do is right and bashing those who disagree. Besides, as a church leader, Wright's job is not to wrap himself in the American flag or make white people (or anyone) feel better. His loyalty is to the word of God...period.

Fact check?? How can you possibly make the statement that this preacher is not a separatist and a racist? I listened to him thundering the following words during a rant about the evils of the United States...
"We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God." This was given as part of a list of ten reasons "God is Sick of this Sh_t." And to make the claim that "the United States invented AIDS. Hello??? The overwhelming majority of the scientific community believes that A.I.D.S. originated from somewhere other than the U.S. So not only is he agitating, he is doing it based on falsehoods, accusing the U.S. Govt doing it. You need to start being objective in your reports, and stop being afraid of looking politically incorrect. News flash... The emperor has no clothes.

youre not gonna vote for obama merely because you think it is unamerican to not put your right hand over your heart during the anthem? get over it. seriously. there are more important issues at hand. i dont say the pledge of allegiance. it doesnt mean im ashamed to be american.. but im not proud either... i just am who i am... (back in high school.. saying the pledge of allegiance sounded like brainwashing. the majority of people cant even say it by themselves with a conscious effort... or know exactly what they are even pledging in fact). I cant even fathom receiving one of these emails and actually BELIEVING it.. especially when theres proof right there. one of my coworkers last week was going on about obama being muslim yadda yadda. it was the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard.... and the sad part about it is there are plenty more people in our country who think just like him. thats disgusting and a down right shame.

The author says he has seen no evidence that Rev. Wright preaches hatred of or discrimination against whites. So, when Rev. Wright said that 9/11 was a "wake-up call to white people," I guess the statement must be true, because one cannot accuse the Reverend of directing negativity towards white people. When Rev. Wright made the comment about Natalie Holloway that "one 18-year-old white girl from Alabama gets drunk on a graduation trip to Aruba, goes off and gives it up while in a foreign country, and that stays in the news for months! Maybe I am missing something," I guess that was just his way of showing sympathy for the murdered white girl. Rev. Wright, who preaches Black Liberation Theology, likes to quote James Cone, one the the primary forces behind Black Liberation Theology. James Cone has said that "To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people." To suggest that there is no emphasis on black versus white in the statements of Wright and Cone is to ignore the obvious. I suggest that the author do a little more research next time.

We received the email and we knew that it wasn't 100% accurate. But the fact still remains about the Muslim influences in his life. That's a chance I'd rather not take with a President of the United States of America. No matter what is said, it is still in the back of my mind and will prevent me from voting for him regardless of his message!

    • Posted By: lloydakis @ 03/01/2008 3:39:11 PM

Great. Yeah. Don't vote for a candidate based on his/her message or platform, but based on something you read in a false, discredited email.

      Good grief.

I couldn't have said it better my self. Way to go.

Okay I have read every comments posted here to this point. I understand the emails are mostly crap BUT I will not vote for anyone who does not place their hand over their heart for the National Anthem(the real truth as posted on this site). If a person is running for office (especially when that office would be running the country) they should show they are proud of being an American. Yes it is not law BUT it does show every American and even non-Americans where you stand. This has been and always will be an American symbol of faith and belief in America and its values. I actully WAS going to vote for Barack until that happened now I will not be. I am sorry but that to me is unamerican even if the laws say "you should stand at attention and place your hand over your heart"it should say "anyone in office or running for office MUST " as this shows where they stand but Barack found the out(great legal tem there) stil it looks extremely bad on his part.

I have to admit that I have not been a huge fan of Obama, even if the poplar vote "seems" to be going his way and when I heard today that he was not going to attend the event Louisiana today really threw me for a loop. I seriously wonder where his thoughts are on that.

Anyway, I digress.... I have recieved a number of those emails from my cousins and have disputed each one of them, in Barack's favor. I just wanted to let you know that I am disgusted with the whole smear campaign, whoever is doing it. I will most likely vote Democratic whatever way it ends up but I feel that Hillary has answered the questions on her goals much better than Obama has and she has the most diplomatic experience, which is what we need at this point in American history.

its funny how right wing nut job activists first spread a totally false rumor that obama was educated at a Islamic extremist madrassa in Indonesia and he was raised as a muslim, and the right ring nut jobs at Fox news was the only major cable news station to believe this rumor, and when that rumor has been easily discredited, the right wind nut jobs are now attacking obama's church affiliation. These right wing lunatics have no sense of shame and use there sleazy tactics to spread fear and bigotry and are hoping that ignorant people will believe their false accusations.

    • Posted By: Kellykelsch @ 02/11/2008 5:15:53 PM

Your post would be much more credible if you attempted to sound as if you're educated. Read it again. You are the one who appears ignorant. Views that are obviously bathed in an uncontrolled emotion are simply not recognized as sound views.

I see it the other way. I'd vote McCain over Hilldog any day, but I'd vote Obama over McCain. The democrats will only bring it on themselves if they nominate the most divisive person in politics, against a middle of the road candidate who gets a lot of independant votes.

i am very surprised that nobody has brought up the clinton strategy. . how come no one has asked hilary the real reason why she has stayed with bill clinton. is it because she loves him or is it because she knows she would not be whre she is at right now without him. i truly believe that when people vote fr hilary its like they ar voting for bill clinton. lets face it if he was able to run again he would win by a landslide.

    • Posted By: pugbro @ 01/21/2008 3:15:35 PM

Bill wants his wife to win because she is pro-United Nations, which is bunch of power hungry countries who want nothing more than to see the USA in the cellar..Bill has been campaigning (abiet on the sly) to be the new leader of the U.N.,,,If Hillary were elected as the president, and bill to the UN, we would not be allowed to take a good tinkle without our Government appoval...I agree with you that Bill would be re-elected by a landslide, but without my vote, because too many people in America today want the Government to take care of them and the Clinton administration had the American people convinced he was going to take care of us and our children by creating some sort of "village"..Anyone who would sent folks to Japan and appoligize for dropping the bomb after they almost destroyed our millitary with a sneak attack and killed thousands of American citizens...Well to put it mildly, He aint no friend of mine>

Regardless of these false emails I still won't vote for him. The truth is I wouldn't have voted for him anyways because my decision lies with his opinion on other matters such as homosexual marriage and pulling out troops from Iraq in an extremely short amount of time. I agree that there are changes that need to be made, but I'm afraid that Obama might have too many changes in his agenda.
