Comment: Conceded, he may have *effeminate* traits... But, elementary logic easily tells us that:
Effeminacy does not equate to Homosexuality. To wit (operative words being *non-conformance* vs *attraction*),

Effeminacy -> non-conformance to traditional masculine traits and behaviors
Homosexuality -> a sexual attraction to (or sexual relations with) persons of the same sex

"One thing I've found of people in the public eye, either you're a womanizer or you've got to be gay. Since I'm neither one of those, people are completely concerned about me." -Clay Aiken

"It's about being accountable to myself and making sure that I maintain principles and values and don't compromise myself inorder to be what society wants to be a popstar, what people think a popstar is..." -Clay Aiken

Folks, FYI, he has high set of principles and convictions... He was raised in a spiritual way (remember him being a Southern Baptist - a congregation having strict moral standards).

Guess what: he is not a womanizer, does not drink neither smoke and other *stereotype pop image* what-have-you. BUT him following good moral standards make him gay? Come on!

Comment: This issue has been going on for the past 5years BUT NEVER has Clay been proven to be GAY... I believe Clay has already SAID and PROVEN that he's not gay (for the nth time).

Come on bigots, get a life.

Comment: Clay just won't suffer the media fools and will cut off an interview when it turns tabloid, and I say, good for him. He is smart, intelligent. funny and witty and usually gives a great interview, but who can blame him with those sophmoric questions. I just love this guy more and more--and totally respect him.

Comment: Why is it women think that gay dudes are so glamorous and cute?..Is it because they are unattainable to women that they fall for them? The feminine side? It always seems that women are glued to every word that a gay guy spouts about his nights out with dudes and there little escapades....its sick.

Comment: Are you just a bit jealous of all the women who do love Clay--what, no love left for you? Try being more Claylike--smart, witty, funny, talented, charitable, oh yeah and gorgeous--what women love, OK, I left off those adorable freckles cause I know there's no way to get those--but you can aspire to some of the other things that endears Clay to us!

Comment: I'm not a clay atkin fan but it's sad to see that newsweek would stoop to that level. It's really sad that sexual orientation is more important then anything else he has done. If he is or isn't who really cares! that has nothing to with anything he has accomplished in his life. The only problem I see is that with him, along with other 'idol' people is that they turn their back on it when they should be greatful otherwise they would never be where they are in now.

Comment: Imagine, a performer who came from virtually nothing to be a huge success and trying to maintain his integrity and values - and not stoop to the level of the Hollywood gossipmongers and airheads, and now Newsweek reporters. I guess this interviewer just couldn't stand it. Plus, when a person agrees to be interviewed, the parameters and topics are discussed beforehand and it is expected that both parties abide by it. It is unethical to change or redirect the questioning on either side. To do so is unprofessional, disrespectful and rude. That's the point, and Clay demonstrated his integrity by not allowing this to happen.

I am totally dismayed by the way your interview of Clay Aiken was conducted. I am 70 year old grandmother and a dedicated fan of his. I have been to 3 of his concerts, read his book, read books and articles that other people have written about him. I also watched the Kelly Ripa show that Clay co-hosted. I, too, along with other viewers felt that she was out-of-line with her comment. She may not have realized how it would appear and perhaps didn't mean it the way it was said, but it was inappropriate. Clay is a gentleman, is quite articulate and funny. He is charismatic, is extremely well-liked by his audiences of ALL AGES. What you see is what you get. When I saw his concert in 2006 he was extremely ill and still performed a 2 1/2 hr. show - sitting on a stool, because he didn't want to disappoint the audience. I have great respect for him as a performer and an individual of great character. Your interviewer should have asked intelligent questions about his UNICEF work - his family, etc.. READ HIS BOOK - it's well worth the time.

Comment: Im sure he enjoys your social security money. Maybe you should save for something more worth your while. I am sorry if I sound disrespectful toward you, but seeing you defend someone who could really care less about his rise to fame and how he got there is just sad. Garth Brooks, Hannah Montana, Kelly Clarkson and others that really DO enjoy being there onstage is more like it. Hope that helps you save a little loot. And enjoy TRUE artists.

Comment: Kelly Ripa is not Barbara Walters or Dan Rather. She wasnt interviewing the Dali Llama or the President. It was Emmett freakin Smith for shaking his butt and winning a cheesy trophy!! They laughed, she laughed...Clay said several times when am I gonna get a chance to talk? Warning!! A few years off the soaps and she got real full of herself..If shes such a germaphob, why did she do the same thing to Regis earlier in the year? And the 3 kids thing, please, I'm more worried about my 4 kids giving me something...And I'm sure wherever Clays hands have been, he's not some slob who doen't wash!! She didnt say anything to him the rest of the show, after the show..call him privately that weekend to discuss it..she waited until Monday morning to blast him on national tv..knowing Clay it probably hurt his feelings even more so...Shame on Kelly for not handling the sitatuation better...And as far as bullying her...yeah sure, that has Clay written all over it...he probably woke up that morning and said to himself..hmmm who can I bully today? AHA!! Kelly Ripa!! She'll never suspect!! Yeah, he's so evil that way...DUH!! I guess she didnt think her speech through before she called the View, maybe kinda like Clay didnt think her reaction through in the first place? This has gone on long enough, let it go..as long as he's happy, healthy, safe, and loves to sing for us all...that's all anyone need be worried about...I'm just saying appreciate him for his gift now, before he gets fed up and decides all the interigations aren't worth the hassle!!

Stats dont look good for gays being happier, they seem to get more suicidal the more promiscuous they get. As for healthier?...Time will catch him offguard...and we all will hear that he has a mystery medical emergenecy, that will eventually be related to his hygenic ways. HINT HINT....lastly he sings for money....Im sure hes not giving away tickets because of his love for the art. Ofcourse not he wants the loot.

Comment: Umm hint hint.. no...Obviously you are a sheltered person to think that male homosexuals have hygenic habits. I for one would not want to go shaking the hand of a practicing homosexual. You as wise as you sound should go ahead a shake ones hand then make your children dinner. And think to yourself what a nice fellow. You are obviously one of those "*** hags" as the gay ppl so proudly call you. You like them because they are soooo cutesie and call you "girlfriend" and compliment you on your cloths... then go on and on IN the work place and LOUDLY go on about there nightly escapades as if everyone wants to hear about there nasty sojourns, then behind your back make fun of you and make the moooves on your man. Go ahead defend them...Its wrong, immoral, and they really care nothing of themselves except to get attention, and when they dont get it cry and whine that everyone is against them. And if they still dont get it they commit suicide :)

Comment: I was a huge Clay fan til the Kelly episode. I think he was just plain RUDE to her. And now, I think he is making something out of nothing, with her and your interviewer as well.

Kelly is not a germaphobic, but almost. She has mentioned often, she is a neat freak and washes often. I think it was just a comment as to germs on his hands and don't put them over my mouth, kind of remark.

Clay can sing but he needs to get some manners and learn to just ignore the public comments. It is not important what is sexuality is and he needs to just get over it.

    • Posted By: BigAl201 @ 01/20/2008 02:41:24

Comment: Kelly has put her hand across Regis's mouth several times. To make him be quiet. It is on tape. Regis and Kelly laugh about it. So, what's the difference??? I watched the show and Kelly just did not give him a chance to say anything or ask a question. He was the co-host and she should have been a better host to him!!! He did not mean it in a malicious way. He apologized to her and sent her flowers. They talked on the phone and everything was okay. Rosie O"Donnell should have minded her own business. She was mean to Kelly and should have just stay out of it! I am a fan of Regis and Kelly and have watched the show for years. I am also a fan of Clay AIken. He wants his private life to be private period.
I respect him for that. I also respect him because he gives back through his charity work, He is the real deal!!!!!

Comment: And here are my comments, Part II: who CARES whether Clay Aiken is gay or not? Newsweek's questioning is not implying anything, but posters here are sure doth protesting too much. Aiken comes across as someone who is not used to actually being grilled, albeit in a humorous way. That has nothing to do with whatever preference he may have. Get a life, everyone, Clay isn't running for the office of God. He's just a 2nd place American Idol, who has no idea of even the production he's now starring in. Pathetic.

  • Posted By: wmathis63 @ 01/17/2008 6:37:03 PM

Comment: Shame on you, Newsweek, for not having a reputable reporter cover real issues in your interview. There was no mention of Clay's recent trip to Tabasco, Mexico for UNICEF. There was no mention of the recent developments in his charity which supports inclusion for children of all abilities. What kind of a news magazine are you? If I had a subscription, I would cancel it. I have always looked forward to your stories in the past, but now you have lost my respect. Get with the program or get out of the business.

Comment: Are there seriously people who think every rumor must have something to it? Who said that? The editors of the National Enquirer? Richard Nixon? Well I didn't learn much from that but at least I got my first laugh of the day.

There are people who thought it was okay to enslave millions of people and came up with all sorts of social, economic and scientific reasons to back it up. And no, there wasn 't a single shred of truth to them.

Sometimes when there's smoke there's just a jealous competitor taking a cigarette break. Anyone can say anything. Heck these days anyone can record anything. So when I judge a person I use my OWN eyes and ears and most importantly, my brain. I observe a person. And I check that what others say about them matches my own observations. I check to see if what they say makes sense. If it's even physically possible. Most of the time they don't even pass that test. Truth and sense don't fit in to the world of celebrity gossip.

Clay Aiken is a very decent, kind and talented guy. He's an incredible artist and musician. He's very smart and quick. And he tends to give people alot more compassion and understanding than they deserve.

He's overlooked the harmful lies and innuendo and ridicule for so long. He smiled through the most absurd and nasty questions. Often designed to do nothing more than push false rumors and give a very different image from the kind, honest and decent man Clay truly is.

When Clay stands up for himself people blame him. Calling it rudeness or attacks. But if he accepts it with grace as he's always done - they say 'see he's okay with it' and use that as an excuse to keep hurting him. Not much of a choice is it? Of course not. Because it's not a choice. It's just a way to try and excuse their behavior. More tricks and manipulation so the bullies can keep doing what they're doing. Well not anymore.

Monday celebrates Martin Luther King day. I say honor his memory by exposing lies and manipulation and bias for what they are.

Comment: Newsweek should have been more reputable. the journalist should have done his research. it is bad enough he talked about claymates throwing underwears , much more airplane event and kelly ripa which is really out of topic and dirt. That part should have been edited. His ariticle is under Theatre and not Gossip. Coz if it was Clay would not have granted the interview at all.

  • Posted By: johnny stecchino @ 01/17/2008 10:03:44 AM

Comment: Someone who is "close" to Clay - travels in the same circles though doesn't really know him - had said that his erratic behavior is the result of a methamphetamine addiction. He claims that he has made cruel jokes about his fan base - a bunch of "crazy old diaper wearing b*****s" - and that the pressure of being a "second-rate" - his words - entertainer when he should be a pop-star have given him ulcers. Can't say that it's all true, but with every rumor there is a shred of truth and if even a fraction of this was right, he'll be dead of an overdose within three - five years! Pull yourself together, Clay! Get clean!

  • Posted By: cmusicfan @ 01/17/2008 7:28:53 AM

Comment: Why won't he come out of the closet? Simple. He's not IN the closet. Clay Aiken is straight. Not only has he said so, it???s clear from his interactions with people.

People believe everything gossip blogs and reality TV judges say to them. . Now that's scary. So do these folks believe everything politicians tell them too? And these folks laugh at Clay???s fans.

The 'Why is he afraid to come out of the closet' question is a trick question. It's a cheat that is often used to mislead people into believing something false. There???s no way to answer this question. The question assumes the answer so that it doesn't matter what the person responds. Or what the truth is.

If the person says, 'no, I'm not afraid'. They say 'ahah'....they're admitting it. If they say 'No, I'm not gay' - they say 'ahah' then you're afraid.

Like asking a man, 'when did you stop cheating on your wife? How do you answer this question? If you don???t deny it, they say ???you???re still cheating. If you deny it, they ???you didn???t stop .. See the problem? This is a common technique of false logic that is often used in gossip columns and such to push agendas.

So why do people try to push false rumors that straight people are gay? Same reason they call kids those terrible names on the playground. To hurt them. It keeps women from being interested. And since straight men are only interested in women ??? there???s nobody left to date. It destroys their social lives And then people say 'oh he must be gay because I don't see him with a girlfriend. Well no sh*t sherlock. You told every woman he was gay!!!

It's horrible because misguided political correctness doesn't allow people hurt this way to defend themselves. Bullies would run faster than cowardly Sir Robin with a lion on his trail if people fought back. So they use manipulation like this to stop it. And they try to intimidate others into not helping or even joining in. Heaven forbid a bully has a fair fight.

.If someone denies gay rumors people say 'oh they're homophobic or prejudiced'. LIke denying being gay means you're saying there's something wrong with being gay. If someone spread a rumor that I was a man, I'd be furious. Because I'm a woman. That doesn't mean I think there's anything wrong with being a man. It's just that I'm not one. Try getting a date if people believed that. It's obvious. And I think the people who push false gay rumors know this very well

It???s about time we took a stand.

  • Posted By: cmusicfan @ 01/17/2008 6:43:46 AM

Comment: False gay rumors are incredibly cruel. It's a way to socially isolate people and make them feel unattractive to those they want to attract. There isn't a meaner thing you could do to a person. And it doens't hurt unless the guy is straight. Which is why I figure people who push these rumors and make the innuendos - know Clay is straight. They know it hurts and that's why they do it.

So why do people want to hurt kind, decent people like Clay? Why do people bully nice kids on the playground? Why do leaders of countries destroy entire populations because they speak another language or have different facial features? Why do people enslave other people? Or hurt people because they practice another religion? If it made sense it would be a whole lot easier to deal with. Near as I can tell, people who are insecure like to build themselves up by putting other people down. They often pick nice people because they think nice people won't fight back. Well they're wrong about that one. They also like to pick on people who've been hurt in life because they're vulnerable and feel more pain. If like Clay, the person is kind, been hurt and is also incredibly successful and talented - even better Putting down something very successful builds the ego even more. But fi they don't find that, they likely will pick on anyone who's there. As I showed with the trick question stuff - you don't need anything to pick on. Just the usual bully 'bag of tricks'. Once people realize the bullies are hurting someone kind who doesn't deserve it, the bullies need to protect their egos. The more kind and decent the person really is - the more they try to convince people the person bad - because picking on someone obviiously ice makes the bullies look bad.

Clay did a great job fending off this reporter and remaining likeable. My guess it's the people who've long since learned they were wrong and silly for believing all the contradictory over the top nonsense spewed about Clay - that are protesting too much. Heaping on more and more insults and assumptions to try to hold on to their egos after being proven so wrong. It ain't gonna work. Clay is the good, kind, talented and yes, straight and very exciting man he is. Deal with it. As for your assumptions...well Felix Unger said it best.

    Never ASS.U.ME.

He may be a famous person but he has a right to his private life. That was just rude of the reporter. Who knows, maybe some day the sad people who want to know this garbage will grow up. Maybe that reporter will grow into a respected journalist someday. Hey, it could happen!

  • Posted By: witchywoman143 @ 01/16/2008 10:05:38 PM

Comment: I can't believe that Clay Aiken had no idea the background of Monty Python. I would have thought that being approached about being in the musical, he would have done some research on Monty Python and the musical itself.

Being in Spamalot is not Clay Aiken's first musical performance. Mr. Aiken has been in musicals before. He was Will Parker in Leesville Road Sr. High School's performance of Oklahoma, when he was a young 16. Oh, that's right, he was known as Clayton Grissom at that time. Of course, this is the first time that he has performed in New York as a part of a Broadway performance. Mr. Aiken is not the first native of Raleigh, North Carolina to be in "Spamalot". Lauren Kennedy was cast in the role of Lady of the Lake in 2006.

Then again, Clay is just one of the many Broadway performers that have come from Raleigh, North Carolina. Or for a matter of fact, there are many actors that have appeared or are currently appearing on television hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina. Clay just joins the likes of Michael W. Hall and Aubrey Dollar as being one of the one of the many talented young people that have come out of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Comment: I thought Clay was very assertive and had some nice remarks back to the reporter. He nicely stated he did not want to discuss those topics and the reporter from a reputable magazine pestered him by continuing to ask questions that Clay did not want to respond to. Just because he is an entertainer does not mean he has to disclose everything about his life experiences. He is human and entitled to his personal privacy regardless of whether or not it is witnessed by the world in the media. Give me a break...

  • Posted By: susie_the_q @ 01/16/2008 7:27:28 PM

Comment: I agree with tantan220. While the questions seemed to veer from "Spamalot," he still needs to have tact and courtesy when approached with topics he does not want to discuss. All celebrities are asked questions they don't want to answer, and all magazines do it, including Newsweek. Besides, he WAS asked questions about "Spamalot" (this is directed to someoneintheworld and quick_name), but all he did was slam the musical! I'm willing to bet that the Monty Python fanbase is astronomically larger than the fanbase of some kid who lost American Idol five years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if his sales (and the sales of "Spamalot," sadly) take a hit because of his rude and pretentious attitude. I don't care how much money you give to UNICEF -- "normal" people do that every day and aren't recognized, so why should everyone bow down to him for it? Celebrities have to learn to be cordial, because guess what? You won't be a celebrity without fans who think you're a nice, down-to-earth person. He's showing his true colors now.

EXACTLY...........what does any of the other stuff have to do with Spamalot? Newsweek loosing it. Im canceling my subscription, my TV and my internet. The way the news is reported these days is a joke.

Comment: jalamafreak : It's more like Clay's had more MEN in him than any man you know!

Comment: I don't blame Clay for being irritated, and good for him! He stated his position clearly. Why ask him about the same events over and over and over again. He's right....I thought NEWSWEEK would be more reputable. I'm surprised!

Comment: He needs to learn how to fend off questions and still seem likable. He comes off as arrogant and concieded. And why is he so afraid to come out of the closet? Better yet, why do people still even LIKE him?

Comment: Your lame comment is not a surprise. You, like many of shallow America focus on things that are not important in regards to Clay Aiken.

The man has a stellar voice and is committed to worthy causes, but all you care about is his sexual orientation, which is none of your buisness.
      Why is that?

Comment: Reading the comments regarding your story, it is understandable why people do not see what type of person Clay Aiken really is. Your article would have been so much more informative had you asked Clay questions about the charitable causes that are really important to him and, because of him, to his fans.

Comment: What a dumb bunch of questions! This man just came back from serving with UNICEF in flood ridden Mexico for the Christmas holidays and all this reporter can ask about is some stupid tabloid stories over a year ago?

    Shameful!

Comment: Just what Broadway needs. A self-loathing homophobic lounge singer going into a show he calls the "dumbest thing" he's ever seen. And on top of that, has no idea what Monty Python is. I'm sure that the cast, which has worked hard for years on this show, are going to really loved him for it.

    • Posted By: Cheryl502 @ 01/17/2008 13:37:26

Comment: Who are you? You have no clue who Clay is. Not gay, not a lounge singer. Why don't you just wait for the reviews to hear how he does in Spamalot. It has already been printed that he is a talented great addition to the cast.

      • Posted By: aagbe357 @ 01/31/2008 19:33:55

Comment: Hey genius--guess what? The cast does already love him. It's been reported already. That's just Clay--purely lovable.

  • Posted By: Max Frost @ 01/16/2008 10:28:57 AM

Comment: Nice way to go into a Broadway show by calling it the "stupidest thing" you've ever seen. In addition, not even knowing what Monty Python is. I'm sure the cast is going to really love him for this.

    • Posted By: Cheryl502 @ 01/17/2008 13:34:32

Comment: Not everyone knows Monty Python. I bet more people know Clay Aiken. If you know how to read the articles say the cast loves him. Quote :he is witty and so talented"

Comment: That's our MAN, hold your ground buddy! and for Newsweek, shame on you! Clay did already talk about this stuff, and it's all stupid, and everyone is always bugging him with this crap! He's such a great human being....and someone's always trying to get something on him...
that kind of sucks for him, then he won't want to do interviews for anyone sooner or later. He has a million very interesting subjects he could talk about, that are important and real for all to hear, why don't you ask him about that stuff? ie: BAF, UNICEF, UGANDA, NEW MEXICO for Christmas. these are great topics for Clay. That's the man us CRAZY fan's (as everyone calls us) like to hear about Clay.
We aren't crazy...98% of us, are just loyal fans that will follow him and watch him entertain us and sing with his soaring voice. he does it very well!
Please, don't ever put Ripa and Clay in the same sentence!!!! EWWWWWW

Comment: I've always been rather indifferent to this guy. But he seems like a complete jerk from t his interview. PMS much?

    • Posted By: aagbe357 @ 01/31/2008 19:32:18

Comment: Right, and what gives you the right to judge Clay anyway--are you a huge star being pestered by some idiot reporter. Looks like you throw stones quickly yourself and this isn't even being directed to you!

Comment: Yes, your right he is the best. the people that put him down and make up stories, they are all judgemental to begin with. How do you convict someone about things you know nothing about? The man has so much integrity...he's got more man in him than any man I know...!
