Sorry, Barack, You’ve Lost Iraq.

Bush's efforts to negotiate a long-term U.S-Iraq pact may remove troops as an '08 election issue for Obama, Clinton.

Comment: Bush has been making his remarks for the past year that he is putting in place programs that they next president will be powerless to stop. The puppet regime in Iraq is not cooperating with Bush at all and wnats America to do all the dirty work for them.

In the mean time Bush has bought 10,000 acres of land in Argentina, one of three countries that have pledged not to arrest and put him on trial for crimes against humanity.

Comment: Bush and the puppet government of Iraq may think they can make a long term US committment, but it isn't going to work. It took the US peace movement 6 years to get us totally out of Vietnam. It'll happen again. We had to riot in the streets against Vietnam. If the same thing is needed again. Then so be it.

Comment: The US is pushing the Iraqis to a corner. After Japan, Korea, the Arabs states, Afghanistan and many others, it is the Iraqi's turn. That's why the whole world hates Bush so much and for that matter eventually the world will hate everything American. It will not be a surprise if the Iraqi Army is now planning a revolt against the US Army or they will join with the insurgents to fight their common enemy. I think the insurgents are consolidating their forces during this lull period waiting for this to happen. There will be more bloodshed.

Comment: This is a preposterous article and the journalist is simply a victim of spin and needing an article to pay the mortgage. The truth is that iraq will occupied either factually or by proxy and all else is bluff and political bluster. Shameful really that this journalist is ultimately still naive enough to even consider this as a serious proposition.

Comment: This article is nonsense. The US sent troops into Iraq, without United Nations Security Council Authorization, in violation of US Treaty obligations and International law. No amount of twist, spin, and distort changes this fact. Any agreement between the US and Iraq, obtained out of an illegal occupation is illegal per se. Any agreements between the US and Iraq, obtained while Iraq is under duress, sitting at the end of the barrel of the US gun, is void ab initio. The US had better face up to these facts, and be prepared to be forcibly ejected from Iraq. in either an Iranian Shah-hostage situation, or a Libyan Qaddafi takeover situation. Ira will never be a US haven, it is foolish to propound that fantasy as plausible.

Comment: If the Iraqi government thinks they can sign a piece of paper that commits the next president to toe the line set out by George Bush, they are sadly mistaken. That is why we have elections. They can make all the agreements they want, but Americans are voting for change this year, not Bush.

Comment: one could predict what Bush planned--his own phase-down to mute Iraq for the elections but while
building the nearly trillion-dollar "Embassy" complex three times the size of Versailles--it is there to stay
folks!! After that, of course, once McCain is in the White House by the plan, we can always enlarge the
troop presence so the war goes on, Shiites run the place and we control oil production/price--that's what
colonialism is--and when you do colonialism, that's what gets terrorists. It's all insane unless one realizes
how much Bush and Saudi Arabia and giant companies will have their oil regardless of any cost whatsoever:environment, money, blood, troops or world opinion. James Mc

Comment: We need to start talking about bringing our troops home from Europe where they definitely do not need us anymore. This redundency is ridiculous considering the fact that the European Union is able to take care of itself, and , where does it state the legality of keeping troops there 60-70 years after WWII? We would win alot of european friends if we did that.

Also, Iraq is a moneypit, but Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia et all will continue to play the game of "you gave our rival such and such, so no you owe us, such and such" which is the major cause of bankrupcy regardless of how Iraq plays out.

If the next president whoever (s)he is can stop the hemorraghing of funds to Israel (which relationship by the way violates the separation of church and state by -committing us all to the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem), we would gain friends around the world, as well as stopping the injustice against the Palestinians perpetuated in our name. We could use the money spent on Israel for the LAST CENTURY since 1948, on domestic projects that we need at home.

Then if, we stopped fighting over prayer in schools and had actual education instead of indoctrination of religion--along with better math/science and better history and literature programs, as well as good vocational training opportunities for those who choose career over college,

    better public transportation

better research and development in everything

    etc.etc.etc.

Well, that would be real change!

Comment: Well, how about withdrawing our troops from Europe? Here we are talking about Iraq, but who said that we have to have troops in Europe? They are redundant; especially with the existance of European union.

Many Europeans have wanted us out for years and they are far able to take care of themselves then the Iraqis. I am in favor of troops in Iraq for the short term, Hillary should draw down troops in Europe though.

Regardless of how Iraq plays out, we are giving both Israel and Saudi Arabia too much. These two countries are both playing the game of "you gave them such and such, so now you owe us such and such."
We could get out of Iraq tomorrow, and still go bankrupt because of the Middle East.

Comment: The first order of business is the impeachment of Mr.s Bush and Cheney, now.
The second order of business is to charge Mr.s Bush and Cheney with war crimes.
Then the Chimp-in-Chief shenanigans will come to a quick end.

Comment: nonsense. now that bush has made the presidency a dictatorship whose actions are not accountable to any treaty, let alone congress, the supreme court, the american people, or anything else, the next president is free to do whatever he wants. He can pull us out of Iraq on the first day he is in office. what goes around comes around

Comment: How is this not a treaty subject to ratification by the senate? If it is not a treaty, why would a future president be bound by it? If it is not a treaty, the introduction by Hillary of her bill concedes that the Bush-Cheney administration can destroy one more part of our constitution-senate ratification of treaties. If it is not a treaty, Hillary is grandstanding as well as helping Bush destroy our constitution.
