By clinging to power, the president is making Pakistan fight the wrong battle—against him, rather than the extremists destabilizing the nuclear-armed nation.

I have failed to understand that all of a sudden why every body has started speaking against President Pervez Musharraf. He was the same person who when came into power in late 1999 with the blod less coup every body was jubilant in Pakistan. People welcomed him. Afterwards he was the person who changed the perception of Pakistan from a extrimist state to a new moderate state. He was the one who banned all the Jihadist groups operating within Pakistan. Yes i do agree that there were certain mistakes which his government had made but that doesnot mean that he was not patriotic. Moreover, on the Judiciary issue i belive that it should be the institution that should be strong not the individules. Why people are for the restoration of the deposed CJ, whereas the charges against him were a hidden truth. The same CJ abused the seat by addressing the rallies. So i think that it is more important to get the Institutions of judiciary strong rather than CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary.

DURING an interview by the BBC Television, President Musharraf said that the day he felt he had become so unpopular that the Pakistanis no longer wanted him in power, he would quit (Jan 24).
However, when asked how it would be determined that he was no longer required, he could not give any clear-cut reply and conveniently proposed that there was no other way except for him to conclude this himself.
Apart from that, when his attention was drawn to the recent call by many former services chiefs and generals for him to step down, he said that these were the people who write newspaper articles ??? as if that is an unwise act. He must know that people like Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger and other senior diplomats and officials have also done that when they found it necessary, many of which have even appeared in Dawn, Mr Musharraf, too, had once or twice tried his hand at writing articles. So, what???s wrong with that?
He then went on to say that these critics consist of two types of people: those whom he had removed and those who couldn???t get anything from him (meaning any posts or favours).
And, what about the other services chiefs of the navy and the air force, the many judges (why were all 60 of them removed?), including former chief justices, the 23 senior ex- diplomats and prominent members of civil society, who want him to go, most of whom do not fit his description?
Also, the numerous American and British legislators and even the prime minister of Canada, who wanted him to resign?
The noted American expert on South Asia, Stephen Cohen, had written some weeks back that Mr Musharraf is either suicidal or out of touch with the situation. The US think tank, ???Cato Institute,??? has compared him to the former Shah of Iran and advised Washington to stop supporting this ???Shah of Pakistan??? otherwise the consequences will be as disastrous for the US and Pakistan as they were in the ca

Musharaf is an Indian agents and working in accordance with their objectives and wishes. His last 8 years rule depicts his inner anti Pakistan sentiments and making the country situations worst just in accordance with Indians objectives
The Kargil war were planned for to exclude the doubt on Musharaf as Indian agents for subsequent take over and strategies
In kargil Musharaf make his own Army defeated and casualties were more than 65 wars
Musharaf after take over make and run this country with that objective and exercised all that actions which India wanted
The Pakistani Muslims often raised and protest against Babri Mosque and self bomb and destroy Red Mosque to make a ground for India to exercise the like situations where they want to do so.
Further Pakistan often protest against Indian forces combating in Kashmir against terrorist now self exercised such fighting against their own people to make India free from such protest
When India exercised such fighting Pakistan protest to Human Rights violations but now what Pakistan will respond as they self violate

This is a good analysis of the situation on ground in Pakistan. Seems the author has come across different sections of society and has realistically put that nukes is not a real problem and there is no chance of fundamentalist rule. The way forward suggested is also very practicle and is truly in the interest of Pakistan, USA and the other stake holders in the region. Dr. Tofail

It seems that Pakistan is not a sovereign country. It will always have to seek the blessings of the US before doing anything.

i agree entirely and totally with the concluding part of the article. the future american leadership must view pakistan as a moderate, democratic and peace loving country of the world battling to better the life of its people. musharraf must learn to dismount the horse he has been riding since 1999 and against the wishes of his people since 2002.

See, Pakistan is at the mercy of the US. The US will not seek the opinion of others. It will just at unilaterally.

This is the best article on the crisis Pakistan is facing today. Musharraf's time is up. He needs to go! Here's some tongue-in-cheek proof: http://nabihameher.wordpress.com/2008/01/16/so-who-wants-more-proof/

i agree entirely and totally with the concluding remarks. american leadership must view pakistan as a democratic, moderate muslim state battling to better the life of its people. whle at the same time musharraf must dismount from the horse he has been riding since 1999 and more so against the wishes of its people since 2002. enough is enough.

Whatever has happened and will happen in Pakistan are not the making of Musharraf. He has no choice. Bush is behind all these.

Well written with balanced approach. The last two paragraphs very much sum up all thats happening. Another major problem is the corruption at higher levels, military and civilian, that is making the nation increasingly frustrated. This frustration results in anger for the government, no matter who is ruler, and for any supporter of the govt. (USA in this case).

This is the results when President Bush wants to impose a theatrical democracy. This is another sad saga of the Bush Administration's failed policies. He fools American citizens by telling them that he is spreading freedom and democracy, because this is the only way Americans will feel good that they are doing something good. In Reality, Bush is spreading dictatorship and oppression.

It is not MQM Shaista begum it is Punjabi Choudary bradaran from Gujurat. The events eventually subdue Punjabi dominance in Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. Punjabis are making more hue and cry because they are losing their grounds, they never hiccupped on East Pakistan loss neither when Karachi was burning in mid 80s to 90s. These are unprecedented times when Punjab is finally feeling the heat. Up till now the only qualifications Punjabis had was population which brought the country to this day in governance. Punjabi army, Punjabi police and Punjabi officials in two units and all four provinces. Bad time to be a Punjabi. Punjabis broke the country by electing ZA Bhutto, at the clock of Punjabi general AK Niazi you surrendered to India. Punjabi general Ziaul Haq brought Afghanis in with gift like drugs and weapons and Punjabi army created Taliban. Abudullah Shah Masood the Tajik leader said during cooperation with the Americans after 9/11, I want to get Punjabis. You can check his quotes in news sites. Looks like you are only used to take crap from Punjabis. If Musharraf would have been a Punjabi then things would have been more acceptable to media, judiciary, army and the whole enchilada. So start using you head!

Musharaf is curse for Pakistan and now deeply concern for to stick and remained in power at any cost
He is now helpless and engaged with a terrorist group (MQM) for to target and eliminate their opponents

For this his first target were Bhutto who were assassinated and his second attempt to target the Lawyers but they were marginally escaped

But this is not finished and very soon the world will see further destructions and crisis in pakistan and the planning for that are under way

His next possible steps were to inflame the ethnic clashes in the country and to make their own people burnt in these clashes he deem suit for to remained in power

He exercised a bomb blast in Karachi where the laboured were targetted and were a signal for ethnic clashes are start of such possible clashes
In mean while with the help of terrorist group (MQM) he will exercised other attempts of mass destruction in various part of the country

He now realized that his regime is coming to an end and will now do more destructions in the country for to eliminate all those whome he wants

The world community must to realized their responsibilty timely for to compelled him to quit before he throw the country to civil war

The world should to expect some destructive steps of Musharaf very soon

He ruined and destroyed his own country respectable institutions, Judiciary, Army and Parliment

After destroying all those institutions he now turned to target and eliminate their opponents with the help of the said terrorist group and for this he now targets politicians and general public

Previously the arm forces were targetted as he was the COAS and now he is president and only those will be targetted whome he lead

The world should not expect any thing good but only destructions and nothing else and he if some one analysed deeply will found him worst than Nazi Hitler
