To quote Mitt quoting Ben Franklin "Religion can not exist without freedom, and true freedom can not exist without religion." No qualifiers of which religion. Freedom is what this country is about, religious acception is paramount to maintaining this country's freedoms.

Not just religious acception, but people choosing to live moral lives. Romney would make a great role model for such. We need something to turn us around.... He would be a great role model in the White House. He may even inspire people to go back to their own church! WHich would be great! Whether you are Catholic, Jewish, Baptist... whatever, be good at it.

The sad thing is that this country is so intolerant of each other that even when one "live(s) moral lives" if it doesn't match up exactly with what the other believes the morality doesn't matter. We, as a country, only look at the minute details that make us different instead of our giant similarities. And by the way I agree with you.

        • Posted By: jazzbebop @ 01/16/2008 2:05:17 PM

You are right on the money.... we have become intolerant. Our "turning the other cheek" occurs during a banter between politicians. That is why I think Romney would do great - I actually feel he would be one to stick his hand out to any politician and work to get things done. Case in point.... his governorship in Mass. He worked across party lines.

A better article would have been written entitled, "Was Huckabee's win a fluke?". Since then, he's had a poor showing in all subsequent states, whereas Romney has shown consistency and pulled out respectable performances. I guess his performance in the South will determine if he remains as a top candidate or if he fades into the background.

  • Posted By: dezzi7777 @ 01/16/2008 1:51:40 PM

I can not believe .... it is times like these I lose hope in mankind. Mitt Romney is BS... and yeah the people of MIchigan might be so desperate that they will believe this crap but in reality he is acting EXACTLY like a high school kid running for Class President.... making promises he just can't keep! Don't fall for the tricks people... I still have some hope that you are intelligent beings!!!!
Ok, to cover the thought that some may have.. this wishful thinking that Romney can actually pull it out his back side... ok if you can do that for MIchigan... what about Vermont? Vermont use to have so many jobs in the tool industry as well as IBM.... now there is nothing and it just keeps getting worse... why do you only care about one state? What about all the rest that are in desperate need of attention?
Now, just to make sure I am not picking on Mitt... I would like to make sure I comment on the NH nomination for best actress. People please open your eyes... no amount of tears will fix any problems. .. get off your butt, wipe your face and DO SOMETHING about it!

    • Posted By: jrh_anes @ 01/16/2008 2:02:46 PM

I think that is what Mitt is saying he would do. Michigan is only an example of the make over this country needs. The auto industry has been so weighed down by federal, state, and union demands that it has not innovated in years. Partially their own fault. However, we don't have to surrender our corporations to oversea interests.

    • Posted By: jazzbebop @ 01/16/2008 1:59:26 PM

Dez... the problem with Vermont is they don't want business in their states. Your tax structure is to high, you don't stimulate things to bring business in! The best thing you got going for you is Ben and Jerry's. Your to liberal!!!!!! ANd it is about one state..... the state was Michigan! When its Vermonts time, they will talk about VERMONT!

  • Posted By: whataboutit @ 01/16/2008 2:02:12 PM

Finally, an informed and non-fickle electorate realized that Romney articulates the economic recovery message with clarify and convincing power. Now it is time for the rest of America to wake up and follow Michigan's lead. Romney must continue to hit the campagin trail with his message of economic hope.

Mr. M. Romney is the best! Congratulations.
Lithuania with you, Mr. M. Romney.
Only libertarian-republican Mr. Poul is better, but he is not popular in USA.

    This anti-Mormon stuff is HILLARIOUS!

Remember folks, these people who maliciously and nonsensically attack Mormons from their lofty positions of moral authority are the same folks who lost the civil rights battle. These are the same folks who put African-Americans on the back of the bus; the same folks who preached tolerance and love from the pulpit on Sunday, and posted ???No Blacks??? signs on their church doors. These are the same folks who jailed African-American???s for walking the streets in the wrong area of town, and cried on Sunday when the Pastor talked about walking with Christ. These are the same folks who felt no contradiction between attending church on Sunday and a KKK meeting on Saturday night. These folks LOST the civil right battle, and now they are waging a campaign of intolerance against those who are not different by virtue of skin color, but who are different by virtue of religious beliefs.

These folks see no contradiction between bearing false witness and piously proclaiming moral superiority. These folks see no contradiction between aggressively denouncing a neighbor???s faith and piously proclaiming to love as He loved. These folks see no contradiction between being practitioners of intolerance and piously professing belief in One who loved all...equally. These are the same folks who claim to hold sacred our inalienable rights, endowed by a Creator, that grant all men freedom of religion???to believe who, how, what they may. These folks see no contradiction between trumpeting freedom of religion and trampling another???s religion.

These are the same folks who fear Mormons will somehow corrupt government, because the Pastor running for the Presidency preached such a message over the pulpit last Sunday when he reminded them that ???Gods Army??? must march forward and ???take this nation back for Christ???.

Look, the very fact that these folks are eager to spew bigotry toward Mormons in these types of public forums should give us all an indication of the type of people they are. These are the same people that lost the civil rights battle. The Mormons who post here attempting to defend themselves against stupidity and lies are just wasting time. There may always be people out there who hate Jews; hate Mormons; hate Catholics; hate Protestants; hate Muslims; hate Buddhists; hate Hindus; hate agnostics; hate whomever. Unfortunately, these nut job Mormon haters will continue to run wild spewing their brand of ???Christian??? virtue no matter what good and decent of different faiths may say. At some point down the road as ignorance and hate are displaced by knowledge and charity, the tone and tenor and frequency of these attacks will subside. In the meantime, don???t get too spun up my Mormon friends! Most of this anti-Mormon ???information??? is so off target and incorrect that it???s actually pretty hilarious stuff to read!

Part I - I missed the memo that said it's A-OK to make disparaging and often erroneous statements about Mormons. Apparently, they are fair game. Sure, these are hypersensitive times, when name-calling or perceived bias against any group will get you the Don Imus treatment, but you get a free shot with Mormons. You can say what you want about them with impunity. If you denigrate a racial group, you're racist. If you denigrate women, you're sexist. If you denigrate Mormons, you're hip. No one would openly suggest that you shouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton because a woman can't lead the country, especially an ornery one. Nobody would dare say that you shouldn't vote for Barack Hussein Obama because he's black, or of Muslim descent, or because he has a name that sounds like a terrorist. One Clinton worker even apologized for alluding to Obama's use of drugs as a youth, so apparently it's wrong to disparage former drug users, too. But nobody is shy about saying you shouldn't vote for Romney simply because he's a Mormon. It doesn't even register on the PC-O-Meter. Just like that, 6 million Americans have been virtually disqualified from running for president. They've been rendered second-class citizens. They're foreigners living in America. They face a glass ceiling. How un-American is that? It would be one thing if most of those who oppose Romney did so because they disagreed with his politics or character. But Romney is one of the few candidates who has no character issues, a "squeaky clean" man who has a distinguished record of accomplishments, success and service, with no divorces, no affairs, no scandal. The only thing opponents can say about him is that he belongs to a church they don't understand. A Harvard law professor called Romney the most qualified of all the candidates and "the perfect candidate for this moment in time." But there is his Mormonism, he noted. Even the self-styled PC chief of police, Al Sharpton, once jumped in on the action, saying, "As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways." Mormons don't believe in God? For his penance, all Sharpton had to do was endure a family home evening in Utah.

    • Posted By: aad135 @ 01/16/2008 1:46:49 PM

Part II - It's open season on Mormons. A few days ago, Miami Herald columnist Dan Le Batard stated on ESPN and in the newspaper that part of the reason fired coach Cam Cameron failed was because he got stuck with a Mormon quarterback ??? not a rookie quarterback (which he is) but a Mormon quarterback. "And you'll have a hard time finding a leader anywhere in sports who was as unlucky this year as Cameron," Le Batard said, noting that because of injuries, Cameron was forced to play "a United Nations huddle of a Mormon quarterback, Mexican receiver, Samoan fullback and some guy named Akekekkkkerkker." Now Mormons are foreigners? Ignorance makes no difference. You can say Mormons have four wives or that they aren't Christian, and no one cares. Imagine the uproar if Le Batard had written that the Dolphins suffered because they had to play a black quarterback for part of the season? Or a Catholic? The Salt Lake Tribune has had a field day for more than a week since learning that Mike Leavitt and some of his like-minded cohorts met early in the morning to discuss Mormon theology and governance while he was Utah's governor. What if it had been a Bible study? Nobody seems to mind when former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says his religion "defines me." Or when Obama says his church guides "my own values and my own beliefs." People worry that Romney will take his orders from his church leaders. They don't worry that Obama will take orders from his church, whose "10-point vision" includes two references to its "non-negotiable commitment to Africa," with no mention of America. Oh, and the church statement begins by noting on the Trinity United Church of Christ Web site, "We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black." It's a different set of rules for some out there. You can print newspaper cartoons disparaging Mormons. You can harass their families as they walk to their biannual conference with all sorts of foul language. When someone commits a crime, you can note the criminal's religion, but only if he's Mormon. You can make them a one-liner on Leno. Good luck reconciling all this with the paranoid political correctness that's so in vogue. Meanwhile, the most politically correct presidential election field ever assembled ??? a woman, a black, a Mormon, a Baptist, etc. ??? has gone politically incorrect, but only when it comes to you know who.

Romney is the best all-around candidate. As for his religion, it will only strengthen him, but is not a threat to anyone. I've been a Mormon all my life, and lived through a dozen non-Mormon presidents. Never been a problem for me, why should it be a problem for anyone else if we have a Mormon president, as long as he leads us effectively. The other day, I passed a truck from England Trucking. I'm in South Carolina. England Trucking is a Mormon-owned company in Utah. I doubt that driver was a Mormon. Do you think it mattered to him that his company was owned by a Mormon family in Utah, as long as it provided him a good job? Come on people. Attacking Mormons is just a useless waste of time. But let's give a Mormon the opportunity to lead our country. I think we'll be glad that we did.

Change happens. America can either lead the change, follow it, or ignore it. The latter two options lead to failure, or at a minimum, losing America's first-place status in the global economy. Romney appears to fail to accept change. McCain wasn't clear about how to adapt to change, but he was correct that the jobs as they were then defined are mostly not coming back.

  • Posted By: tiffiny @ 01/16/2008 1:31:03 PM

Huckabee is my first pick however Mitt Romney would probably be my second pick. McCain will have this country the same way it is now in four years. We need someone with fresh ideas and that is concerned about our jobs and our economy.

McCain's "accomplishment" for Michigan was that he was on the Commerce Committee and talked about the autommobile industry- What NONSENSE. He's the father of the illegal alien bill that was a complete OBSCENITY- they tried to jam it down our throats- He's Gone!

Whether or not a candidate can get done what he would like to is always a question, however, Mitt Romney says all the right things for America: lowering taxes for the average person, controlling illegal immigration, stimulating a healthy economy, having a sound energy policy to lower dependence on foreign sources and lower carbon emissions, affordable private health insurance, ect. He has my vote ! Lets help him get it done !

  • Posted By: jazzbebop @ 01/16/2008 1:18:51 PM

Jefferson, just so you are aware, the values that made america great are the judeo christian values. That would be religion. Actually most of the fore fathers, and even Abraham Lincoln himself was quite vocal about the role of God in their lives and in forming this country. It has only been since 1960 that everyone has started to talk about keeping religion and God from being mentioned. Little else will matter if we don't recognize the fact we are the greatest nation in the world because God has blessed us so well. ANd if you think that is to old fashioned, read your early history - the forefathers have all said they were inspired from on high. And the seperation of church and state was not religion and God. It was any one denomination controlling the government which had happened in the old world. Hence, everyone should be able to worship who, where and what they may. It is all about respect....

Economy, economy, economy. We are going into the toilet. I would rather have someone who understands how to rebuild business as the head of a country that is floundering. As opposed to someone who understands how to let their spouse cheat on them and get away with it multiple times.

  • Posted By: deerone100 @ 01/16/2008 1:14:31 PM

Whether or not anyone can implement what they hope for in governing is always a question, but Romney says all the right things: lowering taxes, controlling immigration, stimulating the economy, independent energy policy, private affordable health care, ect., ect. He has my vote. Lets help him get it done

I am sure among all the available candidates Mitt Romney is the most suitable to be lected a sthe President of USA. With Huckebey as his VP and with the LA Governor as his Secretary of State, and a few people whom I can name as his right hand in the admin, he will be the best President .

  • Posted By: US Waffle House @ 01/16/2008 12:28:20 PM

Ron Paul has beat Rudy Giuliani in a couple primaries. I wouldn't be surpeised if he gave him a serious run in Florida.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/16/2008 1:10:30 PM

But where is Gulianni? Paul has to beat McCain, Huckabee and now Romney to be considered a 'credible' candidate.

  • Posted By: natickvoter @ 01/16/2008 1:00:51 PM

For Romney to tell the auto industry we can bring back the past is to hang an anvil around their neck himself. Actually, they hung that anvil around their own necks 25 years ago when they turned passenger cars into "trucks" to avoid efficiency standards when it first became evident they were necessary. The only way to throw our auto industry a "lifejacket" is to offer a plan for government support to accelerate the fuel-efficiency transition that should have occurred 25 years ago after the first fuel crisis. The candidate that can come up with a credible plan to embrace the future is the one I will vote for, not the one who digs a hole in the sand and invites me to put my head into it.
