Let us all study black history and better understand what is the underlying reason behind white supremacy. cause and effect.

How about we study violence and crime in the black society instead.
U are a sad and lonley man....
And you are the worst writer I have ever seen. Have you ever taken an English writing class?

I wish this article would have highlighted "DO" as another thing to do on this day. I think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr would like to see people coming together in service toward others. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"
we need to search ourselves get in alignment with the word of God .
Dr Kings foundation stood first on the word of God , the teachings of Jesus Christ ,through the Holy Spirit
He had compassion for all people
Here's what Dr. King would want - he would want the electorate to be informed about the candidates they are voting for. Unfortunately, I don't think most people - especially those not on the Internet - really have thought through what Hillary Clinton is about and the choices she has made. Place your vote as to whether you think the voters are informed and read some more commentary on this topic, for whatever it's worth: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/1/21/05324/1674/39/440324http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/1/21/05324/1674/39/440324
Everyone needs to watch oprah today. She is highlighting the civil rights movement. Maybe some of non believers could learn something.
Since Hispanics (and I'm just counting the legal ones) are now the largest minority in the U.S., maybe we should make Cinco de Mayo a federal Holiday.

"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree." --- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The people of Venezuela and the Cuban exile community in Miami, in support of the political prisoners in both nations, commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by carrying on his legacy of promoting, through peaceful means, freedom and equal rights for all. On January 15th, two trees were planted in Dr. King's honor, one in Miami, Florida and one in Caracas, Venezuela. Further, on January 26th at 4:30 p.m. at Riverside Park, Miami, Florida, there will be another tree planting event. If you wish to learn more about these events or other events planned for the near future, you can visit www.amavex.org or www.rutadepaz.org.

Today, and other special days like this try to think of someone who dies so that others may live. If you don't want to think about Martin Luther King, Jr. then think of others that have lived this courageous life. There are many, too many to mention in my comments. Then think of your life and the opportunity you have to live so that others may live and use these thoughts as gifts to everyone you can.
we have terrorism cause peace is too expensive for any military especially the biggest and till someone creates a way to make more money than paranoia building destroying and rebuilding they aren't going to give it up, the O.W.O. bush was GHWB was in charge of the assassin teams at the university of Miami in '62 and typed a letter he took to dq hoover on te 23rd claiming he and his renagade cuban assassins had nothing to do with JFKs killing but research has shown bush stole well his handlers did the election a modern day assassination they got rid of JFK jr knowing not to wait till hes elected or running ass the case s in the pantry and the altered motorcade route with their cia fbi patsy
I agree with watchingbays: Also, I had a few words that was incorrect in my last post. it should have read:
Comment: Who did Dr. King have the affair(s) with? Because I have never heard any of these stories that was actually have any proven facts to support these allegations. Sorry!!
I am very proud as a black man originate from DrC to say that by reading Dr. King life'biography, my own life has since the changed in many ways. This day has a useful meaning for blaks in particular but also for all humanity in general if the world has to have to rest to peace.

I refuse to celebrate a man that has taken jobs and promotions from me to give them to less qualified individuals in the name of "equal opportunity". I also have a dream: Let all men be judged on their own merit, let you not prosper lest you be worthy.
Are you serious? Wow, it's amazing how no matter how much somebody does for so many, there is always someone there to tear it all down. Your inability to get a job or a promotion has nothing to do with Martin Luther King. If you knew anything at all about the man, you would know that he fought for the rights for ALL men. This included extensive support for labor rights for everyone. So quite your crying and blame your problems on someone else.
U cannot get a job because u are a retard...
I didn't say that I couldn't get a job, heck, I made $135,000 last year. I'm just sick and tired of people using Dr. Kings legacy as a means to lower the bar for some and calling it "equal opportunity".
Sounds like a personal thing to me. Jobs for years have gone to underqualified people because no one wanted to put an "African American" in the position.
Every person should be accepted and respected regardless who they are or what they look like until they prove themselves untrustworthy.
I remember, as a middle class white girl growing up, learning something very important in school ....."All men are created equal".
Dr. King was "God's man of the hour", breaking down walls that divided. He will always, as he should be, honored for following the leading of the Greater One.
You made $135,000 last year? Big deal.. there are plenty of promotional opportunities for white men in america do not use dr king as an excuse why you cant move up in your company.. maybe youre not qualified and dont realize it yet.. you sound very foolish..
Goodtalk, mr.blueeyes
I think he was a good man-but not great enough to warrant a legal holiday. By the way, I am white and as far back as my family tree goes, nobody in my family ever owned slaves. So I have nothing to do with oppression.
WOW, if I had a dollar for everytime I've heard that "my family never owned slaves" comment. MLK had nothing to do with slavery, Einstein. If you learned some history you would know that he fought for the rights of ALL men. He warrants a holiday, because he was a brave individual who fought against many social injustices at a time when our country was becoming increasingly volatile. MLK spoke out against labor issues, poverty, and for the rights of women, yes, women. I am sure you are a good man yourself, mike1964, but understand the history. Not just your own.
WOW! If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard that "my family never owned slaves" comment. Who gives a crap. MLK had nothing to do with slavery, Einstein. Do you even know why he was a good man? He was an individual who, at such a volatile time in our history, was brave enough to stand up for ALL men; not just Blacks. MLK didn't just speak out on racial injustices, he spoke out on other social issues plagueing America. He fought for fair labor laws, poverty issues, and rights for women as well; yes, women. So mike1964, I am sure you are a good man-but learn your history, MLK did more than just "Have A Dream"
MLK Jr. had nothing to do with slavery either. He wasn't fighting for the freedom of slaves, given that they were already "freed", he was fighting for the equality of all people in America. As far as I can trace my family back none of my ancestors were even present in America at the time slavery was still legal and I may not have had anything to do with oppression, but as a woman I know how important MLK Jr. was as his efforts helped pave the way for the feminist movement as well. And he didn't even just speak about equal rights for all people or even just the demolition of oppression, he preached for peace and unity, a brotherhood of man, as well.
Anyone who believes that Martin Luther King Jr. was a man who spoke out only for the rights of the black community is a fool. He spoke for the rights of all peoples. And for those of you who think that Martin Luther King Jr. day is a day set aside solely to recognize and remember the one man should realize that that is not how MLK Jr. would have wanted it. It's a day to remember all of those, black or white or whatever color you want to assign them, who stood and marched with that man, who stood and listened to his speeches, who believed in what he said, who cried when he died, and still struggle to uphold his beliefs today.
If gathering up a community of people, a nation of people, and motivating them to rise up from beneath the boots that grind them into the ground and demand the respect and rights that all people deserved and do so in a non-violent manner in a time when violence ran rampant through the streets, if leading a movement that would forever change and alter the course of the USA and the American people, is not enough to warrant a legal holiday than I would like to know what the hell is.
Go to work and pretend like This is just like every other Monday...u must care since u are on here typing....
to mike: King was a great man who believed in the equality and freedoms of all people, for you to say that you had nothing to do with opression of any peoples is a stark reminder of the lack of empathy and respect for the man and his ideals, if you do nothing to fight oppression and stand by as it takes place you are as much to blame as anyone. We can all still fight for the basic civil rights that King belived were due to all, we are not as of a yet a perfect color blind country.
Reading through some of these posts it kind of makes me sad how few remember or follow Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream and beliefs. Ignorance cannot be fought with ignorance. Hate cannot be fought with hate. There are people on here making comments that are cruel, outdated, and demonstrate a lack of both education and good-breeding. But while every fiber of my being wants to tell them where to go and just how to get there, that's not what this day is about. Martin Luther King Jr. said "Returning violence for violence only multiplies violence, adding a deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars."
Let them make their hateful comments. But don't return in like. You're only feeding the hate and helping that endless spiral into ignorance. As the great cartoonist, Ashleigh Brilliant, once wrote "Be kind to unkind people, they probably need it the most."
So, to all of those whose opinions are not considered politically correct in this day and age, I have only to say to you, "I appreciate and respect your opinions and thank you for sharing but cannot under any circumstances agree with you and still claim to be an intelligent person. Have a happy Martin Luther King Jr. day!"
And to everyone else, use the hatemongers' comments as an opportunity to practice the peacefulness and patience that MLK Jr. so aptly demonstrated. Don't be the kindling to their fire.
Comment: I am Filipino Citizen residing at San Pedro Laguna Philippines and a law graduate of Lyceum of the Philippines. I know the contribution of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to America's society. He made a truly heroic efforts to save black Americans during the "seggregation era" from all forms of cruelty whether it be racial or otherwise. So please commemorate and remember his deeds not just today and until his idealogies and aspirations are ingested by mankind. FSL
you show the promise of principal an which this land like all lands belong to all and as Hemingway said "travel is the fatality of all prejudice" that anyone can be american fleeing class religious and economic oppression was the idea and that they may very well be better than those born on this bit of earths dirt as evidenced bysome idiot s here today on this small planet we all breath t he same air

What has and what does the dream mean to me.
His dream was for equality of all ; each standing together; race colr creed were to mean nothing. I never heard him refer to himself as an African nor as a black man but as a man with a dream. He sought for and led a fight for sameness not for separation but for integration. that dream can be realized if even one person is marginalized or looked on as different. He fought against the differences and celebrated the sameness of all men.
