Comment: What shocks me most is the reacisim I see from people when they are in desperate situations. This happens from all sides, even from those who claim they are not raciest. I have friends from every walk of life that I have encountered, and I have been luck enough to get to know other cultures and see the light where I was raised in a semi raciest house hold that made few comments but still they had been made. We all need to realize we are all human. no matter what our outsides show or our backrounds. Kids need to be told you make a judgement about a person based on the person and not because they may be different then you. Maybe someday the killing will end and our children can know more about the world because they care about the humans that occupy it.

Comment: Raven, go to msnbc.com and read the article currently posted about Haiti. Under "World News"--"In Hungry Haiti, Dirt is Food." There you have a totally black country ruled by blacks and the people are reduced to eating dirt cookies--this is no joke--because blacks cannot and never have been able to rule themselves. The problem with the black race is they will sit in a pile of garbage and eat dirt rather than to work. If they would get off their black behinds and DO something to help themselves then they would not suffer under such horrendous poverty. You can't spend your entire lives blaming it on white people. What real job has Jesse Jackson ever kept? NONE. What real job has Al Sharpton ever had? NONE. What real job has your your current "Presidential Candidate" Osama Bombing ever maintained? NONE. You're leeches. And if silly politicians like Ted Kennedy didn't steer money to your silly foundations and nonsensical "campaigns for justice and freedom", then you'd all be sitting on the couch listening to the abomination that is rap and watching big fat Oprah.

I also want to thank you because it is people like you that give me the extra push to succeed. And could you please tell me why white people tan, get injections in their lips to make them full buy padded underwear to make their butts full , rap and take hip hop dance lessons, Love You Much A Beautiful Successful Black Woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment: Tider--I was waiting on some ignorant *** like you to make some stupid remarks concerning MLK, intergration, and any other racist comments concerning blacks in America.
You only see black faces in the news because you crackers run the stations. Do you really believe whites don't commit crimes? In my area several days ago, some sick *** murdered his wife and four child. You can't turn on the television without hearing about sick *** like that... meth labs, child molestation, serial murderers--you *** live in a state of denila--you simply don't flash your sick behavior across the screen. But the world knows how pathetic you people are.
And by the way, dumb ass--we(Blacks people) never wanted to intergrate with you sick people. We wanted to be able to do whatever we wanted to do--like you sick ***. You are a race of child molesters--always raping your daughters, white priests raping young boys, killing your spouses and children, serial murderers, spree murderers, mass murderers, having sex with animals, drunkards...the WORLD--not just this country is the way it is because you exsit. You do know your race is a genetic flaw. A cancer that has infected the human race. Soon, your color (if you can call your pale faces color) will no longer exsit. Smelly, dirty, murderous, filthy God-less race of ***.

Comment: The white race is in a sorry state because of the devastating effects of forced integration and the incessant propaganda of the miscegenation-promoting utterly godless television and film media. In states where there are no blacks to speak of (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Iowa) of course they are going to vote for blacks because they don't suffer the ill effects of a large black and hispanic population. I live in a congressional district of Alabama that is 80% black and here chaos reigns because of the utter immorality of the black male. In the Mobile Register every day there are endless pictures of black males carjacking, or perpetrating home invasions where elderly white women are raped or worse. Read the MSNBC article on the atrocities committed in Africa by General "Butt Naked"--no joke, thats the name taken by a black military commander who kills children and eats their hearts before warfare--and then transfer that kind of mindless violent insanity to America. That's what your precious integration has produced.

Comment: When one thinks nothing much has changed simply view those pictures. They are worth a thousand words. I was a little white girl in the 1950's and raised in a mostly white (at that time) Boston suburb. I remember our high school class elections when a black woman was running for president. She said to me that she would never win because she was, as she put it then, a Negro. I was astounded that she would make such a statement. I thought about that continuously for many years and when I looked back I, of course, sadly realized she was absolutely right. I think even then, though, I knew she was right but I simply did not want to realize that would be true in the country loved. Much has been accomplished since that time nearly 35 years ago, but, I believe, we still have a long way to go.

There is, I think, something, perhaps, which is woven into our genetic tapestry to resist those who are not a member of our group. Perhaps it dates to the origin of man. We, hopefully, as years go by and decades pass will know that we are one species -- homo sapiens -- and that all of us, each and every one, can trace his or her lineage to Africa. We must learn to live together if we are all to survive together. I hope I see that in my lifetime.

Comment: I lived in a small north Georgia town until 1969 when my family moved to Hampton Roads Virginia. I have experienced a unique blend of deep south and mid atlantic. My father worked as the manager of the local movie theater in Ga., and I remember vividly the "side" entrance of the theater. African american patrons were only allowed to enter from the ally, and once inside they had to make their way up a narrow staircase to the balcony. Although I was very young I knew somewhere deep in my being that this was wrong and so I questioned my parents about this practice. I can not remember the exact answer but to sum it up they brushed it off as "the way it was". I can honestly say that I have never heard a racist comment come out of either of my parents mouth and in fact both were equally respectful and friendly to all, and yet it was wrong. When my family moved north to Va. times were changing rapidly and schools were being intergrated, etc. My mother had heard horrific stories about the situation and was very cautious. She put my brother and I in a private school for 3 months but was soon very comfortable placing us both back in public school. I felt enriched and blessed going to public school during this period. My point here is although many great things have come to pass since that volitle period in US history but much is left to be done. It is up to each of us individually to see past our unique differences and embrace our humaness. Spread a little love today of all days.

Comment: On picture 6 it states ''Latino inmates'' and as an Italian-American I find it offensive that the term and designation Latin/Latino has literally been taken over by Spanish and Portugese speaking peoples especially from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Central and South America. The Latin language and culture originated and devoloped in ancient Rome, Italy and by Julius Ceaser and Pompeii and if any people should be proud of and claim their Latin roots it is the Italians over any other people. I also find it offensive that the term Latin is made into a seperate racial identity for Hispanic people. I respect everyone's culture and I am not preaching prejudice or bigotry but Latin is a cultural legacy from Italy and credit should be given there.

Comment: We all need to educate ourselves with different cultures. We might look different, but in reality we are all the same. God made all the nationalities of his image, why destroy it. When we learn about other cultures we learn how to accept each other. We all have special qualities, its a beautiful experience. I grow up in a multicultural community, I grew up without indifferences. I had blacks, hispanics, hindus, whites, and other cultures living in one area. We need to stop hating what we don't know. Learn from each other, arm yourselves with knowledge and I will guaranteed that this world will be a better place. However, we all know that this a fantasy idea. We can succeed with our young children. Teach them well without discrimination, and to accept people for what they are, humam. I admire Dr. King for his leadership and he did have a dream for all African-Americans; that was to do good, to educate themselves to be successful, to stay out of trouble to work hard and to move mountains with the power of our voices and to not be afraid to take charge and help they neighbor. He also wanted us to continue what he had started a revolution of rightousness amoung all the little people that coudn't help themselves. I read that his dreams was not clarified, of course it was clarified, it was to countinue to fight discrimination against and to continue to fight for the same rights as all citizen of the United States of Americans and to emplement new laws that would give all african-american the same equal rights as white americans. Let's live the dream that started the movement and continue to strenghten our laws for a better America.

Comment: The graphic photo of the black person being hanged broke my heart. I believe in God, and I believe that God created all men (and by men I mean men and women) equal. The color of one's skin means nothing in the eyes of God. Why mankind has chosen to segregate and hate because of the color of a person's skin is beyond my comprehension. White people are no better than black people, Hispanic people, Asian people or any other people. We all just need to do what God has told us to do .... love one another. However, I can see why some Americans are upset when they hear about programs for illegal immigrants who get money from the government to start a life here based on a fake social security card, or some other lie, and gaining access to programs that those of us who were born here don't have. That upsets me a lot, but not because of the color of the illegals' skin. It upsets me because I work as hard as or harder than anyone in America, and I've raised 3 kids, and I deserve the benefit of what my taxes pay for ... not someone who has come to this country illegally.

  • Posted By: ramona garcia @ 01/21/2008 4:35:50 PM

Comment: To the last comment. I don't know what color you are, but you sound like a young person. You need to go back to history. The equality is always there, you might not see it, but it is there. We learn to ignore certain things as we grow up, however it comes a point in your life that that you can't ignore the equality. I see the equality in color, general nationality. I see it in schools and neighborhood. I came from a multicultural community, however the equality was there. We are all Americans without colors or bounderies, we still have a lot of grounds to cover. We need to teach our young children not to know the difference between brown, yellow and black. God made all of us the same. We look different but we are the same. We are giving our young children the wrong message and it starts with the first education which is the home. Parents need to change so the children can learn to be human and colors. Let's worry about global warming, soon will not have a earth to live on, no matter our colors or race.

Comment: "White achievement month!" What do you thnk every other month out of the year is.? All children are taught are the achievements of white people until those months that are set aside for those who are of color. Everyone is not equal in America yet and it is those like you who pretend it is that let the truly dangerous and racist people out there get away with their evil hatred and toxin in today's society.

Comment: Color, Color, color. I am sick and tired of all this "black history month" and "Hispanic heritage month" You know, why not "White achievement month?" That's right, I forgot. That would be racist!!! This is America people, get off your racial high horses. Anyone can see that it is the races that are keeping the world racist. We are all equal, we should not be called Hispanic Americans, Aftican Americans, Mexican Americans.....We are Americans. PERIOD.

    • Posted By: sevais @ 01/21/2008 15:11:10

Comment: The races are promoting the issue? Did you not read that there are some schools in the south where Black teachers are not alowed to teach? There are schools where the black and white children are still forced to have separate proms? What is the problem here? I cannot see the logic anywhere in saying that the races are promoting and perpetuating these demeaning practices.

Yes you are american's! And it is about time you all stood up together and accepted yourselves as one unit. No more segregation! No more inequality! No more (pls exuse my french) Bull ***!

We all have far bigger problems to worry about! How's about we all get together and end this war! Or we could deal with the global warming! Or maybe we could strive to ensure that no child in America goes hungry anymore! None of these issues are black or white (or anything other colour for that matter).

I don't mean to come down on anyone. I am far from perfect. I have made my share of mistakes and most likely will make many more with time. It just breaks my heart that somewhere out there, some children are being raised with the idea that any one colour is better that the other. Personally my favourite colour is Green!

  • Posted By: sevais @ 01/21/2008 2:28:12 PM

Comment: Living in Canada we don't see the racism and segregation that our neighbours to the south continue to deal with. I cannot believe that in a day and age such as this; with all of our intellect and grown as humans, we still promote segregation and racism. Words like intergration and equality are not even word spoken in my son's vocabulary, and of that I am proud. My children and many others like them have been raised to see no colour. I pray in the future that children everywhere can enjoy such freedom.

I have been known that when filling out an application for employment where it asks RACE...well i have always responded HUMAN because there is only one race... THE HUMAN RACE god bless

The world, especially America, has been founded on a very wrong and biased foundation. It is my opinion that it will take a long time for total healing and acceptance to come. Thank God for men like Mr King who started that process.

Comment: Your gallery is all fine well and good, but you failed to illustrate the many, many black men who sat and still sit in prison innocent of any wrongdoing ... some on death row. You failed to illustrate overt racism is still alive and well in the justice system, our neighborhoods and schools. Life is NOT rosy today as compared to the lynch picture you showed. Whites (Jena 6 and the rash of copycats) illustrate that the NOOSE is still being used today to intimidate black people. An appropriate picture behind the lynch picture would have been the symbolic noose used on the black kids who just wanted to sit under a damn tree.

I work as an administrator in an elementary school in Polk County Florida. Although I'm in an administrative position, I still don't have any say in the fact that the principal refuses to even give Black applicants a chance to teach at our school and the aggregious way that he has tracked elementary students by having "white only" classes. The powers that be don't monitor this and anyone who speaks out is in jeopardy of losing thier job. We still fall very short of realizing the dream.

  • Posted By: StephanRN @ 01/21/2008 7:35:39 AM

Comment: While I agree that Dr. King was not popular amongst radical civil rights activists (i.e. Black Panthers, Nation of Islam etc.) it is ridiculous to postulate that he was assassinated by dissatisfied blacks. The fact is, Dr. King did more for the concept of peaceful revolution, poverty rights and racial equality on a global scale than anyone else in his generation - this was a fact amoung blacks and all minorities in the Civil Rights Movement.

Presently, he is the subject of an oversimplified and exploited image of unity and peaceful change. One has to wonder, have we lost sight of his dream because it has been accomplished, or have we lost sight because of our complacency with the status quo?
'fetus1961' stated that "quotas and favoritism were never what he had in mind," clearly a reference to affirmative action and other programs aimed at balancing the playing field, as it were. I think it is important to realize that we, as a nation, are clearly not at the point of full equality yet, and as a result we still need to make proactive moves towards equality. Though these days the conflated issues of race and class seem inextricably intertwined, they still inform one another and represent those who systematically lose out because of institutionalized racism and class politics. The slide show above has a clear example of this: more than 10% of black men between 25 and 29 are currently in prison. That figure is startling and is indicative of something that is still very wrong with our country. The means may have changed, but the ends are still the same- an oppressed population, treated unfairly by justice institutions, unable to have access to the tools and services that would end a cycle of poverty induced incarceration and exclusion.
Dr. King had a dream, and while we have made strides towards that dream, we are still a long way from its ultimate realization. Until then, I think we do a great disservice to the memory of Dr. King by failing to both acknowledge the complexity of his dream and juxtapose society today with one that represents the ideals put forward by Dr. King.

Comment: The saddest thing is that Blacks who wanted change RIGHT NOW weren't happy with Dr. King either. He wanted peaceful change. He was hated by whites who were afraid of change and blacks who thought violence against whites was a quicker and more satisfying answer. He wanted EQUALITY, not what we ended up getting. Quotas and favoritism were never what he had in mind. "Judge me not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character". Those words and ideas could have done great things if Dr. King had lived.
I was just a 7 year old boy when he was killed, but I recall seeing him on the news and he always seemed like a real honest and straight forward man. That kind of honor is sadly lacking in our current leaders and wanna be leaders.
I have always thought that he was probably REALLY KILLED by black people who didn't agree with the way he was leading the movement. I think he knew he was going to be killed soon also. When he said he had "seen the mountaintop" but wouldn't reach it with us, he sounded like a man facing certain death but still trying to inspire people to continue on toward freedom! What great things might have happened. If only there was someone like Dr. King working toward freedom today.

    • Posted By: THE RAVEN @ 01/22/2008 14:19:30

Comment: But I can't tell if you are white or black? How in hell can a 7 year old boy be a judge of anything? There has never been such a thing as quotas for blacks, and honkies have always hired whites based on favoritism--even when they are usually inferior workers. Stop mis-quoting king. Let's get one thing clear: Blacks back tahen could care less about those old, pale things, as Malcolm X called them. We didn't want to intergrate, but be free to go and do what ever we wanted, wherever we wanted. By mingling with that filthy race, we have developed some of their nasty habits. If King were alive today, he would probably change his way of thinking after he has witness what being around old pale face has done to us.
