Clearly the term "universal" is being overused, misused, and misunderstood. The only truly universal coverage would a plan in which everyone was covered, without even signing up. If signup is required, it is not universal, because some people would refuse to sign up, regardless of fines and penalties, and those people would not be covered. Also, all laws must be constitutional, and wouldn't a mandate violate citizens' right to privacy? The question is not only, which plan covers the most people and keeps the cost lowest, but which plan we have the political power to enact. Clinton has not given a clear exlanation of what has changed since she tried to force universal coverage on American in the early 90s. What are the reasons she failed then, and what has changed and how will she do things differently to ensure a different result? That is what we need to know! She seems bent on keeping it a semantic argument over mandates.

As an African American, I'm very proud of Obama's accomplishments so far - He is very focussed on the issues that confronts us as a nation and he is addressing them. Let's listen to what he is saying and not try to interup what we think he means. Look at record and not his color and give him a chance to help get us our of this rut that President Bush has gotten us in. We are at war, we are losing our homes, we can't afford insurance coverage for ourselves and our children and our futures are at stake. Let's wake up and pay attention to what's happening. The past 7 years have been very difficult for a lot of people. We need a good change.

They were also chanting back to the skeptics "Yes we can!". There was nothing nothing "Mumbo Jumbo" about it.. I found the Victory speech to be Very insperational. For the first time in a long time, I have never been more proud to be a South Carolinian. The vote for Obama went all across demographics, even if the vote was 50% black of the SC Democratic Party. The white vote turn out for Obama turned out to be a huge surprise.

In response to jlanz., the south carolina audience was chanting "Race doesn't matter" not some "mumbo jumbo". Also, why should Black pastors be ashamed of saying that Barack is Black? He is in fact, a Black man. And as a Black person, I am very proud that an intelligent, educated(not to mention, handsome) Black man is doing something that most people thought was impossible: Be the leading Democratic candidate. That's not a racial comment, its just being proud of his accomplishments thus far. Trying to make the fact that he is Black a negative thing is racist. But you are right about one thing, we do need to focus more on our problems as Americans.

Great Senator Obama won a landslide victory in South Carolina . The thibg that disturbed me the most was not that he had won and Senator Clinton had lost was the fact that during the victory speech there was a song being sung or a chant that sounded like this, " Agwamgo Malo Malo" what in the world were they saying? It is also perturbing to listen to the black pastors who come on national TV and are not at all ashamed of saying that the Barack is black and the blacks have a sense of pride is this not a racial comment? as pastors they come out sounding like bigots and yet it is the Clintons who are being blamed for the racial slurrs. Mr. Obama is more interested in making history or defining himself as making a moment in history rather than discussing the serious issues that are facing the American people. Senator Obamas glorification or Former Presidents degradation will not solve the problems that the American people are facing. America needs a leader who will be faithful to American Values, American chants of "God Bless America" not some mumbo jumbo "Malo, Malo" .

I hope you give their dual presidential run the same negative scrutiny

  • Posted By: dannyb @ 01/25/2008 5:33:15 PM

What do you have to say about Hilary and Bill and their lies?

  • Posted By: Tilla @ 01/25/2008 4:59:48 PM

Comment: I am struck by how often Bill Clinton is quoted during Hilary's run for the President of the United States. Are they running as a team? If so, let them be candid about that; however, we've had that show in the White House already haven't we? I mean no disrespect, buit I think it is time for the country to move beyond the Clinton Age and start a new chapter in American history.

  • Posted By: TR039 @ 01/24/2008 3:14:16 PM

Obama's staff need to think about what they release to the press. "Look before you leap."

  • Posted By: madisonhill @ 01/24/2008 11:36:07 AM

I think it was great to see the "truth" in action. Bill Clinton "asleep" at the MLK Celebration, while King's son preached! The comment "Bill Clinton even lies in his sleep" is Profound! Let us not foget, Bill Clinton deceived, lied too and betrayed ALL Americans as president. I voted for him too, I am African-American too, but let us not forget, the true character of the man, especially since Bill continues to pretend to be Black!

Aaron, as least for Barack Obama, he is touting his Christian faith to counter the pervasive, yet false, rumor that he is a Muslim (and therefore, implicitly, that he's a terrorist in disguise). That false rumor is especially wide-spread in the southern states like South Carolina, where it has been spread far and wide through email chains.

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 01/23/2008 3:10:42 PM

So by your way of thinking there should not be any babies named Tim (Oaklahoma), David (Waco, TX) or Jim (Jonestown). That is an extremely stupid comment.

  • Posted By: lboogs13 @ 01/20/2008 5:54:17 PM

Does anyone think its odd that Obama has not run as the bi-racial candidate that he is? Why does he only acknowledge that part of him that is African-American? His father did not raise him.......I would find him more sincere and trustworthy if he spread the message of multiculturalism as that is the true message of the USA that we are a melting pot and diversity reigns supreme......I find it peculiar that he doesnt campaign on this point rather than because his skin color is slightly darker than a caucasian's that automatically makes him the first Black candidate......mmmhhhhhhhhh

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 01/23/2008 3:07:15 PM

Because as far as most of America is concerned, he is black. When was the last time you saw a box labeled bi-racial on any form? Please by enlighten me. It has been that way since throughout America's history. It only takes one drop of black blood to make you black in America. I have a 2 yr. old nefrew who is half black and half white, although there is no racial ignorance on either side and he is surrounded by love. All of his medical forms list him as black, all of his pre-school forms list him as black, not by choice but because there are no other options.

THE LAST TIME I CHECKED IT WAS CLINTON WHO FIRST USED THE RACE CARD,BACK BY THE GUYS ON CNN .DO YOUR RESEARCH AND COME WITH THE TRUTH NOT FACTS,THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE WHITE HOUSE A FILTHY PLACED WIHT NO SHAME TRYING TO CAST STONES WHEN THEY LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE CRYING LIKE BABIES EVEN WHEN THEY GETTING MORE MEDIA COVERAGE THAN EDWARDS AND OBAMA.IF THEY WIN THE NOMINEE I WILL VOTE REPUBLICAN.

  • Posted By: realitygirl @ 01/23/2008 1:50:31 AM

Senator Obama is the most straightforward and informative democratic Presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton's husband turn as many women off as are turned on. He needs to get a reality check and get quiet.
I do not want to see anymore Bill/Hillary drama in the White House. At this point I am very nice. However, she and her husband are the slum lords who made the White House into a "slum" in the city of Washington, D. C.

  • Posted By: 100%democrat @ 01/22/2008 9:34:03 PM

Was Obama in the state legislature when he opposed the war in Iraq as he says "from the beginning"? . .

  • Posted By: 100%democrat @ 01/22/2008 9:29:34 PM

Where did he oppose the war from the beginning? Was this when he was a state legislature where he was not privy to all information Congress received?

  • Posted By: Lady Yashica @ 01/20/2008 11:29:42 PM

Obama scares me because he EMERGED on the scene with nothing more than a canned "change" speech.
While Hillary is busy answering questions to crowded audiences, Obama is spouting off more "change" rhetoric. He needs to get out of fairytale land and join the rest of us.
In other words, HE needs to CHANGE.

    • Posted By: silverbullet @ 01/22/2008 12:16:56 PM

where have you been,he hasnt just emerged did you hear the speech at the 2004 democratic national convention and there are a lot worse things than hope.

  • Posted By: silverbullet @ 01/22/2008 12:08:47 PM

reading these posts maybe this countryis in worse shape than i thought ,such ignorance nad intolerance of others who might be different, wake up people or get 4to8 more years of this,do your research and find a candidate you like hopefully whos name isnt clinton or bush ive had enough have you?

  • Posted By: scared @ 01/21/2008 3:52:50 PM

I believe the U.S. government needs to do a more thorough background check on Obama, if it turns out he does have muslim decent, he shouldn't be able to run for ANY GOVERNMENT OFFICE in this country, I'm with Lexy1998, it would be an insult to America. I served our great country for 23 years, I'll be damned if I would serve for him. If he is voted in as next president, I will consider leaving this country.

    • Posted By: silverbullet @ 01/22/2008 11:54:27 AM

that is the problem with this country, people are so scared, and it is no mistake about why you are scared it is because this current adminitration has fanned the flames of racial and religious hatred,if you take the muslim world population as a whole you would see that a small percentage are terrorist,so even if sen obama were muslim and he clearly is not whoever can do a better job for this country should be given a fair chance, ther is only one way to go from here and that is up.

    • Posted By: hoping for a change @ 01/21/2008 7:45:29 PM

Hey "scared" didn't you claim to fight for freedom in this country? I guess that is only freedom that falls in line with your beliefs. Personally, I wouldn't care if he was a muslim or not as he seems to ba a comassionate, caring person unlike any other candidate running for office on either side. I hope he wins. I hope you make good on your part and truly make this counrty a better place and leave it.

      • Posted By: scifiguy98 @ 01/22/2008 9:52:02 AM

I agree with you" scared". You should leave the country. Bigots and racsists and those with no moral backbone should not be able to call themselves "Americans" or veterans of this great country. You take in lies and slanders as if they are fact, which tells me that you have not the intelligence to be able to call yourself a military man. We are taught to be able to separate fact from fiction. I was a Marine, and if anybody can claim to be a paranoid sceptic, I can take that mantle on with pride and I say to you that , even if it were true that Obama Barck was a Muslim, it would not matter. He has acquitted himself with honor on the trail, which is more than I can say for Hillary or John, or for that matter, Bill Clinton. I started my career as a Republican until Bush Senior. Then I figured out that fear of others is the battle standard they run under. I wish you well as you leave... and take your Republican friends with you (except for Huckabee)

  • Posted By: scifiguy98 @ 01/22/2008 9:31:16 AM

What is it about him that is objectionable besides being a uppity black man that you don't like (speaking to the newsweek writers). I am so sick of heaing about him being a muslim trying to pass for christian. You and Fox News must be reading the same email "news" and takng it for fact. It galls me see attacks that are not investigated, quoted as fact, while the white candidates lie and tell you what you want to hear (apparently you like to be lied to)

  • Posted By: sydala @ 01/21/2008 10:04:37 PM

I lke Obama - certainly better than Hillary. He took a very unpopular lone stand against the Iraq war by voting no in the Senate, and that can't have been easy to buck the system like that for a new office holder, That shows me that as President, special interests would have much more difficulty influencing him than they have George W, or Hillary, who I also think might be led. We need someone who makes decisions according to our constitution, with the highest moral standards and ethics in mind, especially when it comes to spending our money and sending our children to war.

    • Posted By: Hawaii Resident @ 01/22/2008 1:48:11 AM

sydala says: "[Obama} took a very unpopular lone stand against the Iraq war by voting no in the Senate" Well, sydala, Obama was not IN the Senate when the vote to go to war was taken. Go to the Congressional Record and check it out yourself. It is easy for him to say he was against the war, but he was NOT there to have to make the vote. And since he has been in the Senate, he HAS VOTED his approval for funding for the Iraq War, so how is that "taking a stand".
