This article seems to touch a strong nerve in those who are polarized by the issue. On the one hand, the psychological dynamics of projection and perception filling in the pieces are well-known and do account for various experiences. It's why even Zen practice doesn't treat various experiences as meaningful, knowing instead the power of the mind and its constant projecting. On the other hand, sentient life outside of Earth is virtually a certainty once anyone starts to consider how big the universe is and how many known and potential solar systems there are. Whether or not extraterrestrial sentient beings have visited us is another matter but there are some interesting observations by sets of well-trained people (army pilots, etc.) whose experiences seem to warrant further explanation beyond the mind mechanisms cited in this article.

Check out the Westchester Wing from the 1980's and you will see that this article is silly. Read some modern physics books on space time and you will see that time and distance is not an issue for an advanced civilization. Also look up the sum over histories and string theory.

A true Scientist explores all new information thrown at them. They should never, ever discount something based on their own personal prejudices. That would not be science.

So...haha, faith is in my head? Thanks! Let's take that one to the bank! You can't disprove anything, UFOs, haunted houses, whatever. I don't like the tone this article takes with me; you appear to say that spirituality is all in my head...and well, I DO believe that trees, plants, rocks, and all of nature have spirits...and not because it's in my head...Oh, no...it's in my heart...and no amount of scienticfic research, all this chemical balances in brain lobes...or whatever you said, can EVER explain why we believe in the paranormal. But, haha...I'll tell you...because it DOES exist. I believe in UFOs and ghosts and all sorts of things and you can't tell me, or for that matter, many others any differently.

It is silly to think that we are the only sentient beings in this universe. Just think of the many galaxies that we have mapped out becasue of the hubble telescope. Consider how vast the universe is and that it is still growing from what scientists report. We must really drop the "presumptious" attitude and not think for a moment that we are the only living entities that have the capabilities to do anything in this universe. God works in mysterious ways. I would like to think that one day, when humans are humble enough, we can contact with other life forms outside our planet and forge alliances that will benefit all parties involved. PEACEFULLY!

If you don't believe in UFO's then how can you believe in God? It's just a question.. don't get mad. Atleast you can see UFO's..

I had no idea people were seeing these great bright lights. All this time I saw one, too. But I dare say where I am from because you might think I am not telling the truth. I was at my Avon lady's house picking up my order at night. When I was about to approach my car in her driveway, my peripheral vision caught a glimpse of a bright light. I looked up and couldn't believe what I saw! At first I thought it was a very close-up meteorite. Yet, it was obviously different but I had no explanation for it. I was struck with awe due to its closeness and its beauty due to the bright light and slow progression downward. It seemed to have landed in a nearby field. I thought about calling the police or someone but then I thought maybe it was just a meteorite. The more I thought of it, the more I realized it couldn't be one. Meteorites travel fast and at an angle many times burning out before it hits or, it would have had a "tail" of light. But this was so bright yet so beautiful. and so close. I even wondered if I was seeing a heavenly visitation. The light looked like the pictures people illiustrate when they speak of a star guiding the shepherds to baby Jesus, except that this light seemed gracefully coming down. I wanted to call someone but I wasn't sure. I only wondered if I had an encounter with something unique.

UFO's Well I have seen Plenty......On thing I have never seen ...this god everyone's says is great and created everything....and I doubt if any of these brainwashed idiots have either!!!

What nonsense. Not the UFO story. This article. Because people may experience "mass hallucination" doesn't ergo make it false. Like 'OBE's, ESP or ghosts" once you have such an experience, you know those who haven't are talking nonsense.

closed minded people like tyler will be the end of the world.
There is exactly as much proof of aliens as there is of God.

Stories that other people have told. simple.

How different is a story of being abducted by aliens,
from that of a voice in a cloud telling Noah to build a
    big boat?

How different is a video of some craft in formation in the sky,
from that of the four 'wheel within a wheel' craft that Ezekiel described.

Maybe both God AND the Aliens just don't really want to come back because of ignorant people that have infected this planet.

It's an absurd notion that they try to explain it by saying our brain projects these images in response to seeing something it can't explain. That, in my opinion, is psuedo-science. Life could, and most likely does, evolve similarly, yet independently, in other parts of the universe or our galaxy. Some characteristics would be so useful toward survival that species would undoutably lean towards them, ET craft use technology and physics the we as humans understand, but are currently unable to harness at our current place in time. I could go on forever. Manticore@suddenlink.net for anyone who wants to exchange ideas.

I am one of those rare indivuals who are skeptical but believe at the same time. Can there exist other intelligent life in the universe? Yes, but because of the vast distances between worlds interstellar travel seems unlikely. Also, given the diversity of the space crafts visiting earth would mean many diffrent races of aliens. Highly unlikely all aliens possess the technology for interstellar travel again.

((Do not force everybody to be believe it. If you think it exist then keep it in your mind forever.))) that is one of the worst pieces of advice i have ever seen. do you know where the world would be if every great thinker kept there radical ideas in their mind forever, hmm there would be on phone, T.V. airplanes, COMPUTERS, INTERNET, we would think the world is flat. SPEAK YOUR MIND you may sound stupid but it is better then not saying anything at all.

I don't beleive in "UFO's" but I do beleive in uneplained flying objects. Thanks for an informative article on a subject I find entertaining. The combination of space, science and inprobabiltiy intrigues me.
