public4 states, "I'm sorry, I believe in affirmative action in jobs, but we can't have an affirmative action President." Perhaps, then, you can clearly explain one qualification that recommends HRC to be President.

Hillary is running on the hope and belief, so far demonstrated, that a large block of otherwise reasonably intelligent female voters will vote for her because of her gender. This is demonstrated by the branding of Oprah Winfrey as a "traitor" by some for not endorsing the female candidate simply because she is female.

I do not believe that a rational and informed voter can listen to HRC, believe her, and determine that she should become POTUS. But then, that's not HRC's target audience.

public 4 says, "I'm sorry, I believe in affirmative action in jobs, but we can't have an affirmative action President. "

Perhaps, then, you can name a single qualification that HRC actually has to be President of the United States. She is running on the hope that a large bloc of otherwise reasonably intelligent women will flock to the polls and vote for her because she is female. That's the same mentality that has Oprah Winfrey branded as a "traitor" by some for not supporting the woman in the race.

I don't believe that any rationally thinking person can listen to HRC, believe anything that she says, and determine that she should become President. But then, that's not her target audience.

Bill Clinton is making himself look desperate to get back into the White House. Is this what the American Presidency has become? Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton? This Canadian has lost all respect for Mr. Clinton.

The sad thing is that although Bill Clinton could have formulated his comments on Obama more carefully he is essentially correct on all points. Obama and his handlers are very good at quoting his and Hillary's comments and taking them out of context. And the media plays along because they love nothing more than controversy, even if it is manufactured by Obama's political operatives..

Everyone- you must come to understand, then NEVER FORGET: Just like with booze and toxic waste, there is not a single problem for which the answer is a democrat running the show.

I have always been a fan of the Clintons, but I will never vote for them again. They have destroyed a great man. I think Bill has destroyed his legacy. They have played the racial card and will likely get the nomination, but don't be surprised if Hillary loses in the fall. Blacks will not save your ass this time. NO MORE BS

  • Posted By: rickorocko @ 01/20/2008 11:30:33 PM

Bill Clinton was a black president until a black candidate wanted to become a real black president. How dare a black man run against Hillary. After all Bill has done for black people. Unconscionable. No one can do this to BILL CLINTON

This good cop/bad cop routine of Bill and Hill is transparently manipulative and disingenuous of them both. Take Bill out of the picture for a moment. Imagine he is sidelined through illness and can't campaign. The question then becomes: can Hillary stand on her own two feet? For a woman who repeatedly claims she is ready to take over the Presidency from Day One, she certainly seems to be relying on her hubby a lot. That does not reflect favorably on her executive ability. She pretends to be a feminist but still turns to her old man to pave the way for her. Shameless.

I enjoyed your comment and did not think about how much Hillary depends on Bill. I cannot stand either one of them and try not to think of them at all. However, all I see is either her crying or Bill on TV with a puffed up face because he is angry. We Americans cannot let this power hungry couple in the White House again. We just can't be that stupid twice, can we? The fact he didn't go into hiding after he was impeached shows just how he thinks and that is he will do anything to get to the top...again. She is shameless and I am ashamed of any woman who wants her in just because she is a woman. Americans should want the best person regardless of race or gender.

I have always been a big Clinton supporter but this attack on Obama just makes me sick. They may win the nomination but I doubt she can win in the fall. I am white but I think they palyed the race card and it just makes me sick. They should be ashamed of themselves. They can't play the innocent card card any longer. They played with fire and now they will get burned. Don't be surprised when blacks don't come out and save your ass this time.

Bill Clinton has always been and will always be a philanderer. Hillary would do anything to become President. Her training is chasing women who screwed Bill and calling them liars and whores. Is this who we want for president

One of the main reasons I love Newsweek is reading Jonathan Alter's thoughtful and insightful columns. This time Jonathan Alter once again voices a concern that Is in the minds of many supportersof Senator Clinton. While I will vote for Senator Clinton because I feel she is the candidate best prepared to lead this nation now, Senator Obama woud be a wonderful partner for the next administration, either as Vice Preident or as an important ally. in the Senate. President Clinton needs to find the discipline to step aside and let his wife speak for herself. He should advise her in private and become less of a pubic force in her campaign.

If Mr. Clinton thinks he can lie, distort and ignore advice from others that makes him no better than Castro,
Sadam hussein or any other tyrant. People in Kenya were by and large law abiding until a rigged election sent them rioting.

Bill Clinton was an unseemly president. Now he is unseemly as an ex-president, acting out a role that is totally inappropriate. It is absolutely correct that he is now a legitimate campaign issue. And a big problem.

Clinton's foot soldiers spreading ugly lies about Obama on the internet should be ashamed of themselves. This fine man has a family. How would you feel if someone spread ugly rumors about your brother or dad? This is a decent country. Please stop this ugliness now!

After New Hampshire I was reminded why I don???t want to see the Clinton co-presidency in the White House again. They want to win more than they want to serve and they will destroy anyone or anytihing that gets in their way including Barack Obama, the Democratic party and our country. Hillary Clinton, with the help of Gloria Steinem, the media coverage and many frustrated women, won the NH primary by playing the gender card and getting the sympathy vote. Bill played the bully and the race card and berated Obama in a way that some Americans including myself found offensive. By winning in this way, Hillary has shown us once again that she and Bill Clinton can divide rather unite us. Within days of NH, the campaign is now being defined by gender and race. I am a 59 year old woman who would love to vote for a woman president but not someone who voted for the Iraq war, whose real experience can never be sorted out from her husband???s and whose campaign tactics are, I believe ???in my heart???, not genuine but disgusting. Gender is not the issue. Neither is race. We all know that Hillary is competent and not a female victim and she certainly wasn???t being attacked by Barack Obama who has been gracious and dignified through out this campaign and has not asked for special consideration on the basis of race and upo unitl that time had been trying to avoid it. I applaud Senator Kennedy and Rep. Emmanual for trying to contain Bill Clinton but a narcisistic bully like Bill will be impossible to contain.

Mr. Alter thinks Bill Clinton should pipe down? Mr. Alter, this is just the beginning of the second Clinton co-presidency. We're just going to see more and hear more from Bill if Americans should be dumb enough to re-elect this power-hungry couple. The Democratic Party seems hell-bent on nominating losers: Al, John, Hillary. Can't George Soros come up with better candidates to foist on us?

I disagree with the revolutionary philosopher, Karl Marx, that religion is the opiate of the people. I think political dynasties is the true opiate of the people. With the Clinton's less-than-subtle references to Obama's teenage drug use, perhaps one should pause to ponder an opiate that afflicts--not just one person--but, our entire nation.

So, okay people, one more time:

    This is our nation:
("...life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.")

    These are our dynasties:
    (Bush--Clinton--Clinton--Bush--Bush)

This is our nation "on" dynasties:
"Read my lips: no new taxes." (Bush)
    "I did not inhale." (Clinton)
"I did not have sex with that woman." (Clinton)
"Saddam Hussein has...weapons of mass destruction." (Bush)
    "Katrina" (Bush).

    Any questions?

      JEB BUSH '08

  • Posted By: eswatson @ 01/20/2008 10:28:03 PM

It is obvious Bill Clinton lacks discipline. Maybe he should take some lessons from George H Bush. I used to like Bill and Hillary but watching them during the course of their campaign, if she wins the nomination I will just stay home!

Maybe Alter should quit repeating the talking points provided by Obama's staffers. Maybe Obama and the rest of his supporters AND the mainstream media should quit attacking Hillary Clinton. There's a definite double standard in play here -- ANY criticism of the Clintons, no matter how spurious or speculative, is accepted as truth. ANY criticism of Obama, no matter how valid, is presumed to be evidence of racism. Clinton-Obama

      En
I agree. The whole thing is one sided.Even when Hillary is right on something, they change her words to suit themselves.I blame the media

Have you taken a look at the facts lately? Student supression in Iowa, false choice-record flyers in NH, suit to stop people from voting in NV, racial robocalls, racial attacks by Shahee, Cuoma, Kerrey, Johnson, etc etc... Which campaign was this? Should the press just stop reporting this? Twisting the anti-war record? Where is the press pointing out that HRC's experience in the snate, on her most imposrtant pro-war vote, was done "with conviction" but WITHOUT READING THE 94-page NIE - knwing no one on her staff had the clearance to do so?! And refusing to admit any mistake? Do these traits remind you of someone? Someone's campaign (hint: what happened to Cleland and McCain) And you think the press is going light on the Clintons?!?!

I think iit's awesome that Sen. Kennedy and Rep. Emmanuel have said somethng to Bill about is behavior. personally don't think HRC can stand on her own two feet and I am beginning to think that this election is more about a third term for Bill.. It was serve Billary well if Sen. Kennedy endorsed Sen.Obama or Edwards.
