Comment: This is a "fairy tale". Nothing said was true. The incumbent Ethiopian government itself was a rebel group and knows very well that abusing local pepole will only good for the opposition forces. The lady who said she scaped from the mouth of death but did not want to say where she was -most probably in Kenya- must have made up the story to get a refugee status and be resettled in one of the western countries.
    Hence her words won't count.

    Comment: Tedi;

I have relatives who have run away from the Ogaden region and moved to Kenya because of the on-going massacre. I fail to see why you would dismiss such a calculated and highly destructive collective punishment as the Ogaden massacre as a "lie." I highly doubt you have every been to the Somali region. If you would have been, then you would know the atrocities that are taking place there.

Comment: The American-led on Terrorism has meant that dozens of the most repressive dictators can now be bank-rolled for suppressing dissent in their own countries, which in sum translates into the perpetual unrest and sowing of future terrorist breeding ground. American leaders such as Jendayi Frazer have chosen the easy of ignoring the Ethiopian dictator's crimes and have instead become an effective spokesperson for one of the most inhumane regimes in Africa today. Unfortunately, as we go to bed with such dictator's as Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi and Pakistani leader Parvez Musharraf we are reduced to making a mockery to our call for democracy and liberal ideals in the world. We are viewed as a nation that says one thing and yet does another thing. It is a high time that the ill-advised policies of this administration are corrected before it is too late. As a Somali-American it pains me greatly to see my government financing the massacre of my people while thousands of my people are massacred and millions more displaced.

They are either the words of people with political stakes/agendas or "analysts" who somehow "know" the truth. A classic case of journalists trying to make the story fit a certain profile.

    Dear editor,

Thank you very much for telling the truth and reporting from my occupied motherland.

Your correspondent Mr. Jason McLure is a good journalist and he has done his job properly. He did not care about Ethiopian security forces, police, spies and minders around him to dig out the hidden atrocities in Godey and elsewhere in the Ogaden.

The crimes of Ethiopian government???s forces in the Ogaden have no parallel in today???s world. It???s far worse than those in Darfur.

International Press, international humanitarian organisations, international and local human rights organisations are not allowed to operate in the Ogaden. Because the Ethiopian government under the TPLF/EPRDF of Prime Minister Zenawi has committed horrendous crimes against our people in the Ogaden and they do not want the outside world to know their atrocities.

Human rights groups such as, the Ogaden Human Rights Committee, has carried out extensive investigations of the human rights situation throughout the Ogaden, and has documented gross violations, including illegal imprisonments, mass arrests without charges or trials, enforced disappearances, torture, rape, extrajudicial killings, abduction, forced labour, hostage-taking, systematic religious and racial persecution, dispossession and widespread looting by Ethiopian government forces in the region.

Since April 30th 2007, more than 200 villages, hamlets and nomad pastoralist settlements were destroyed by Ethiopian infantry and military helicopter gunships, and thousands of livestock namely; She-camels, camels, goats, sheep and cattle were decimated in the military campaign as well.

Many animals starved to death and many nomad families were left destitute after Ethiopian government forces rounded up their animals, which are the primary source of livelihood for nomad pastoralists. Confiscated livestock were put in concentration camps and were left for the elements without water and fodder. The pastoralists who resented or showed any resistance were shot dead in cold blood. The incident that took place in Labiga village, near Dhagaxbuur town, on June 18th 2007, where members of Ethiopian armed forces killed 21 pastoralists and wounded more than 50 others who resisted Ethiopian troop???s attempt to impound their animals is a case in point. Comment: The horn of Africa conflict is sponsored and orchestrated by the state terror in Eritrea. The dissemination of hate rate and divisions among Ethiopians is part of their strategy. Similar false or exaggerated articles have been written by those groups (Shabia, ONLF, OLF, SOMALIA Islamists etc.) several times. Its purpose is to attract external aid and support. I am ashamed to see such a bias and factious article in one of the internationally recognized magazines. Surprisingly, The Eritrean web sites displayed this article on their first pages and it is again those people who sent their comments one after another.

Comment: This is a tip of ice berg of what the EPRDF led government is carrying out in the Somali region of Ethiopia. It is not clear why the international community, particularly the west are ignoring this fact and looming humanitarian crises in this part of the world. Perhaps, unlike Kenya, where you can see, most of the international community, EU, AU, USA and other leaders in the world intervening in the political crises in Kenya, there is not serious national interest at stake. This seems to me depressing and the pastoralist Somali people in the region are once neglected by not only their follow Ethiopians but the international community. Instead, the USA and the West more generally, decided to back to the authoritarian regime - because of the global terror Meles Zenawi, to carry out his systematic ethnic cleansing in the Somali region

    Comment: Dear Author,

You said "Such stories, are almost impossible to verify"...is that why you still displayed the same story as if it is a true story??

As a political analyst in the region, i am deeply disgusted by the complete lack of facts in this article. Knowing how ethnic politics affects africa, It is strange that you not only used the ethnicity of the ONLF rebels, but you even used the local subclan community that sympathizes with the ONLF as your reliable source. Did you expect ONLF rebel supporter to praise the ethiopian government?

Still, the most sickening part is that despite knowing the massacres, the bombing and other killings done by the ONLF rebels (all ADMITTED by the ONLF rebels) , you simply ignore to provide the details of those thousands who died because of ONLF and you recklessly focus on a pro-ONLF person to report about a government.

it is easy to see that you smartly avoided discussing the death of thousands of civilians at hands of ONLF because you wanted to focus on accusing the ethiopian government and thus relating it to Bush's war on terrorism since ethiopia is american ally.

in the eyes of political analysts, this article is probably one of the worst standard of article newsweek has published in many years

Then we can let people live there that know how to act. These people are animals and should be treated like a rabid dog. They don't deserve a place to call home. I think there should be an international law if the people that live in countrys like this that can't get along with each other should have there country taken away from them. They should all recieve the aids virus and put in quarantein until they die. Guess what no fighting no killing no sob story to read everybodys happy camper .

Comment: Ethiopia is at the cusp of reaching a boiling point. Priro to the Kenyan rigged elections, the present Tiray dominated government rigged elections and got away with it. Most of the opposition leaders were put in jail and tried for treason. Many were sentenced to death, while others were given long prison sentence. Ethiopia is reeling from the effects of 15 years of Tigray-dominated abusive rule during which the country suffered severe economic mismanagement, corruption, bureacratic incompetence, overpopulation, malnutrition, famine, spread of HIV and so forth. Still, Ehtiopia holds the dubious honor of being the poorest nation in Africa. The atmosphere in the country is very tense. Inter tribal tension is at all-time high. The OLF has started an armed rebellion, which will soon spread to the Amhara and other large tribes. The animosity between the Amhara and the Tirayans is age old. When the insurgency takes shape and a gorilla warfare is cemented, the Tigray people will suffer a great deal because they will be objects of wtich hunt by the larger ethnic groups. The Amhara, the Oremo and Somali Ethiopians will have their revenge. The Tigrayans do not have the number to counter an angry oponent.

Comment: Muslim or radical muslim that is the question. If one choses to violently expand control over another then expect reprisal. Not even Africa will be a safe haven for radical Islamists. Its too bad that a people chose the dangerous path when there is peace that can be had for a non violent life.

Jack24:- you call yourself a political analyst, you sir smell like a lobbyst or an Ethiopian hack. I know the reality Jason is describing first hand, I had lived similar realities up north under Mengistu. In the horn, and most of Africa, the blame for a big share of atrocities and violation of human rights squarely goes to the establishement, the governing elit. Its being that way and it will continue to be that way. You Jack24 call yourself an analyst, and I have lived what you can't seem to analyze.

The Meles Zenawi government can talk the talk, can denied the facts and can rule by the gun, when it???s oblivious about the fact that this world is like a shadow of a tree that is rotating around its roots. When he is forgetful of he was in Mogadishu few years back as a refuge himself and supported, sheltered, schooled and helped by Somali tax payers. When his minority clan is building sky scribers and majority Oroma and rest are forced to obey by the gun.
Anyway Kumsaa point of view is neglectable in many ways but to mention one of them is that ONLF does not have the capability to go and kill in Tigres region thus whatever they kill are member of the army alone whereas the army is killing indiscriminately among all. Moreover, I glanced about the AU news headlines today and to my amusment sow the AU delegates arriving in Mogadishu Airport welcomed by Tigres militia General known as Gebra.
So, all in all the unpredictable tree shadow of Africa is currently possessed by the Meles the current hyena of the horn of Africa and it is matter of time before he too is hunted down by another hyena.

Comment: The Oromo as a people have not been subjected to any more injury than any people of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a poor land with a tradition of authoritarian rule. Those who claim that the Oromos are subject to specialized abuse are people with their own agenda. Do not be fooled by these people. All Ethiopians have suffered at the hands of poverty and divisiveness. It is time to stop playing ethnic politics and trying to rewrite history.

    • Posted By: Kumsaa @ 01/23/2008 10:50:39

      Comment: Dear asefajarso,

If you are a genuine and concerned citizen, then read this recent article by Fekade Shewakena entitled ??? The prison speaks Oromiffa??? here http://www.oromoindex.com/News/6424.html. Additionally, a report by human rights watch makes a good reading. http://www.hrw.org/reports/2005/ethiopia0505/ethiopia0505.pdf

What we are trying to emphasis is this issue: disproportionately large number of Oromo citizens are found in Ethiopian prisons that in schools or universities. We are denied political and economic involvement in Ethiopia and our human rights is grossly abused. The proportion of Oromo ethnic group in prison is probably the largest Africa, if not in the world!

      • Posted By: asefajarso @ 01/23/2008 18:01:26

Comment: I am truly concerned about Ethiopia. It is impossible to verify the numbers of any group that has been harassed by the government. The fact is that Ethiopia needs better. Our problems are not solved by saying Tigreans did this, Amharas did this or Oromos did this. Any Amhara who stands up and says the EPRDF is corrupt and should lose power faces the same consequence as an Oromo. If we all claim that it is because of our ethnic identity that the government is bad then there is no solution. That is, there is no answer in saying Amharas and Tigres are enemies or Oromos and Tigres are enemies. The truth is there are ruthless, selfish power hungry people of all groups. Its the common man and woman of each group that is left to suffer.

    Comment: Dear Newsweek Author,

Thank you very much for reporting the plight of the Somalis under TPLF occupation. This is a sign of mature and impartial journalism and you should keep up the good work. However, as in many parts of Africa, there are a number of ethnic groups in Ethiopia. One of the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia is Oromo estimated to be about 40 million out of 81. The Oromo people have been subjected to appalling atrocity by the TPLF from June 1991, when TPLF hijacked power in Ethiopia.

Credible reports from international and national human rights groups have documented the ongoing systematic human rights violation of Oromo by TPLF. Many thousands of Oromo were killed or disappeared without trace. In 1992/93 alone, more than 50,000 Oromo were imprisoned by the government security forces and the abuse has increased considerably recently. Rape, torture and executions are commonly employed by the government. The government has also committed a number cross- border operation and killed many prominent Oromo in Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya. Thus Oromo are not safe in Ethiopia or in neighbouring countries.

Oromo ancestral lands were confiscated from peasants and given to members of the ruling party who are exclusively from the Tigre tribe. Thousands of Oromo peasants were forcibly relocated to the most inhospitable areas infested by communicable diseases with no infrastructure. Oromo students are repeatedly expelled from schools and universities just for being Oromo. Oromo graduates have been denied employment opportunity. Even the ecology and environment in which Oromo lives is affected by the government which intentionally burns Oromian forests on the ground that it harbours Oromo freedom fighters. There are countless other forms of human rights violation of Oromo by the current TPLF government.

I hope you do immense service to humanity by reporting the crime of one of the most cunning tyrannical regimes in Africa, which commits untold atrocities against one of the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, if not in Africa.

Comment: I LOVE this article!!! it is funny how the author admitted there is NO way to verify the tales given by ethnic ogadenis who support the ONLF, as ONLF itself stands for ogadeni. Still, the author tells the article of the same tale (which it admitted of lacking verificatin) aS IF IT IS a Flawlessly TRUE story., hahahahaha!!

    .
    well, we know it sells.

    by the way, dear author,
you said somalis living in america finance the violent rebels too ... so are we going to read any future article about our america allowing terror financers in its own backyard??

    probably not.

America can't be labeled a state sponsor of terrorism because it is america, the unquestionable bully of the world.

Comment: Wow! Finally American media woke up and started seeing the true color of the Ethiopian government lead by a "Tigray-dominated" dictators. What they are doing in that region is nothing but pure ???Ethnic cleansing??? and this is a good case for the International Criminal Court.

Bravo Newsweek for breaking the silence on this matter. A word of caution, this regime will start accusing you of helping terrorist organization as they did to the Red Cross and many others who tried to shed light to this issue.

The big question is would the American government now start seeing the true color of this tyrannical regime and start distancing them self from them. This dictator will be recorded in the darkest pages of the history of the Horn Africa.

It is no secret to the larger world what the Ethiopian regime have been doing in Ogadenia and the Somali capital, Mogadishu last year.

If the west in general and America in particular are genuine about human rights then they should act according and come to the aid of this poor nomads that are being victimized by they own government. People like Ms Zahid deserve to be protected against this tyranny.

Comment: Dear News week: Shame on you for this very biased reporting. For a reader with out much knowledge of Ethiopia and the horn, this article reads like a typical news reporting. However; it is a public secret that the truth is much different than what your reporter has written here. While what has and still happens in the Ogaden is deplorable and ugly, the Ethiopian people are fighting a war that has many instigators and hidden supporters to say the list. May be you should do a bit of research on the writer (Jason McLure) and his motives. An example is that the writer referred to the Ethiopian government as "Tigray-dominated", Ethiopians know that this way of reference only come from Ethiopian enemies. The consequences of war are indeed ugly and no civilian should be subjected them. What is more despicable is of the likes of this writer who try to benefit from it financially and politically. This is not what I expected from a reputable news reporter like News Week.

Comment: For everyone questioning the validity of the heinous acts of the Meles government, speak to any Non tigryan ethiopian for verification. It's very easy to sit in the comforts of your homes thousands of mile away and post rediculous statements defending a government you have no first hand account of. If you analyze the instability in the that region of Africa, the common denominator is the Meles led government of Ethiopia. The minority controlled government of Meles does not follow the agenda or needs of its people because the fact is they dont represent the Ethiopian people but the minoty ethinic group of Tigryans. The puppet govt. acts like a malnourished donkey chasing a carrot on a stick that it will never catch. Thus the Bush admin has Meles doing all his bidding while the region suffers in the name of "fighting terorrism. Such a shame.............
