The horn of Africa conflict is sponsored and orchestrated by the state terror in Eritrea. The eradication of hate rate and divisions among Ethiopians is part of their strategy. Similar false or exaggerated articles have been written by those groups (Shabia, ONLF, OLF, SOMALIA Islamists etc.) several times. Its purpose is to attract external aid and support. I am ashamed to see such a bias and factious article in one of the internationally recognized magazines. Surprisingly, The Eritrean web sites displayed this article on their first pages and it is again those people who sent their comments one after another.

This is a tip of ice berg of what the EPRDF led government is carrying out in the Somali region of Ethiopia. It is not clear why the international community, particularly the west are ignoring this fact and looming humanitarian crises in this part of the world. Perhaps, unlike Kenya, where you can see, most of the international community, EU, AU, USA and other leaders in the world intervening in the political crises in Kenya, there is not serious national interest at stake. This seems to me depressing and the pastoralist Somali people in the region are once neglected by not only their follow Ethiopians but the international community. Instead, the USA and the West more generally, decided to back to the authoritarian regime - because of the global terror Meles Zenawi, to carry out his systematic ethnic cleansing in the Somali region

    Dear Author,

You said "Such stories, are almost impossible to verify"...is that why you still displayed the same story as if it is a true story??

As a political analyst in the region, i am deeply disgusted by the complete lack of facts in this article. Knowing how ethnic politics affects africa, It is strange that you not only used the ethnicity of the ONLF rebels, but you even used the local subclan community that sympathizes with the ONLF as your reliable source. Did you expect ONLF rebel supporter to praise the ethiopian government?

Still, the most sickening part is that despite knowing the massacres, the bombing and other killings done by the ONLF rebels (all ADMITTED by the ONLF rebels) , you simply ignore to provide the details of those thousands who died because of ONLF and you recklessly focus on a pro-ONLF person to report about a government.

it is easy to see that you smartly avoided discussing the death of thousands of civilians at hands of ONLF because you wanted to focus on accusing the ethiopian government and thus relating it to Bush's war on terrorism since ethiopia is american ally.

in the eyes of political analysts, this article is probably one of the worst standard of article newsweek has published in many years

Why is it that Africans cannot live in peace (and do not blame it on colonial powers please!!!) but then just as well, who needs another India or China. Keep Africa fighting and our resources will last bit longer and we will be able to breath fresh air few years longer.

The Bush Administration must stop supporting Zenawi's tyrannical regime, which is a threat to the entire Horn of Africa. Supporting Meles is only exposing the folly of the US government, which is allied to terrorist dictatotors in the name of partnership against "terror". .

For everyone questioning the validity of the heinous acts of the Meles government, speak to any Non tigryan ethiopian for verification. It's very easy to sit in the comforts of your homes thousands of mile away and post rediculous statements defending a government you have no first hand account of. If you analyze the instability in the that region of Africa, the common denominator is the Meles led government of Ethiopia. The minority controlled government of Meles does not follow the agenda or needs of its people because the fact is they dont represent the Ethiopian people but the minoty ethinic group of Tigryans. The puppet govt. acts like a malnourished donkey chasing a carrot on a stick that it will never catch. Thus the Bush admin has Meles doing all his bidding while the region suffers in the name of "fighting terorrism. Such a shame.............

The best thing in this case is to try and get everyone together. Give everbody a firearm and let them all go at it.. We can only hope that there is no one left. Then we can let people live there that know how to act. These people are animals and should be treated like a rabid dog. They don't deserve a place to call home. I think there should be an international law if the people that live in countrys like this that can't get along with each other should have there country taken away from them. They should all recieve the aids virus and put in quarantein until they die. Guess what no fighting no killing no sob story to read everybodys happy camper .

The Oromo as a people have not been subjected to any more injury than any people of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a poor land with a tradition of authoritarian rule. Those who claim that the Oromos are subject to specialized abuse are people with their own agenda. Do not be fooled by these people. All Ethiopians have suffered at the hands of poverty and divisiveness. It is time to stop playing ethnic politics and trying to rewrite history.

      Dear asefajarso,

If you are a genuine and concerned citizen, then read this recent article by Fekade Shewakena entitled ??? The prison speaks Oromiffa??? here http://www.oromoindex.com/News/6424.html. Additionally, a report by human rights watch makes a good reading. http://www.hrw.org/reports/2005/ethiopia0505/ethiopia0505.pdf

What we are trying to emphasis is this issue: disproportionately large number of Oromo citizens are found in Ethiopian prisons that in schools or universities. We are denied political and economic involvement in Ethiopia and our human rights is grossly abused. The proportion of Oromo ethnic group in prison is probably the largest Africa, if not in the world!

I am truly concerned about Ethiopia. It is impossible to verify the numbers of any group that has been harassed by the government. The fact is that Ethiopia needs better. Our problems are not solved by saying Tigreans did this, Amharas did this or Oromos did this. Any Amhara who stands up and says the EPRDF is corrupt and should lose power faces the same consequence as an Oromo. If we all claim that it is because of our ethnic identity that the government is bad then there is no solution. That is, there is no answer in saying Amharas and Tigres are enemies or Oromos and Tigres are enemies. The truth is there are ruthless, selfish power hungry people of all groups. Its the common man and woman of each group that is left to suffer.

For the sake of clarity, I was offering advice to someone who it turn was offering advice to everyone else. We have the mental capacity to understand moral issues as well as dissect the English language, and nothing precludes us from doing both simultaneously.

It's sad that everyone is commenting on spelling accuracy and wording , taking rips at whoever wrote the article rather than focusing on the content which is horrifying. A better way to phrase that would be " Take your catty attitudes to the gossip category." please

A better way to phrase that would be, "Reporters whom are presumed literate by the establishment."

It is: soldiers hanged one man, not hung one man, Mr. McClure.
This error is becoming all too common with reporters who are assumed to be literate.
This is offered as a general corrction for the good of all concerned,
and not as a particular swipe at you.

Ethiopia is at the cusp of reaching a boiling point. Priro to the Kenyan rigged elections, the present Tiray dominated government rigged elections and got away with it. Most of the opposition leaders were put in jail and tried for treason. Many were sentenced to death, while others were given long prison sentence. Ethiopia is reeling from the effects of 15 years of Tigray-dominated abusive rule during which the country suffered severe economic mismanagement, corruption, bureacratic incompetence, overpopulation, malnutrition, famine, spread of HIV and so forth. Still, Ehtiopia holds the dubious honor of being the poorest nation in Africa. The atmosphere in the country is very tense. Inter tribal tension is at all-time high. The OLF has started an armed rebellion, which will soon spread to the Amhara and other large tribes. The animosity between the Amhara and the Tirayans is age old. When the insurgency takes shape and a gorilla warfare is cemented, the Tigray people will suffer a great deal because they will be objects of wtich hunt by the larger ethnic groups. The Amhara, the Oremo and Somali Ethiopians will have their revenge. The Tigrayans do not have the number to counter an angry oponent.

Muslim or radical muslim that is the question. If one choses to violently expand control over another then expect reprisal. Not even Africa will be a safe haven for radical Islamists. Its too bad that a people chose the dangerous path when there is peace that can be had for a non violent life.
