Jason, kudos to you. Thank you for bringing the pain of the people of the horn to the world.

Jack24:- you call yourself a political analyst, you sir smell like a lobbyst or an Ethiopian hack. I know the reality Jason is describing first hand, I had lived similar realities up north under Mengistu. In the horn, and most of Africa, the blame for a big share of atrocities and violation of human rights squarely goes to the establishement, the governing elit. Its being that way and it will continue to be that way. You Jack24 call yourself an analyst, and I have lived what you can't seem to analyze.

    Dear Author,

You said "Such stories, are almost impossible to verify"...is that why you still displayed the same story as if it is a true story??

As a political analyst in the region, i am deeply disgusted by the complete lack of facts in this article. Knowing how ethnic politics affects africa, It is strange that you not only used the ethnicity of the ONLF rebels, but you even used the local subclan community that sympathizes with the ONLF as your reliable source. Did you expect ONLF rebel supporter to praise the ethiopian government?

Still, the most sickening part is that despite knowing the massacres, the bombing and other killings done by the ONLF rebels (all ADMITTED by the ONLF rebels) , you simply ignore to provide the details of those thousands who died because of ONLF and you recklessly focus on a pro-ONLF person to report about a government.

it is easy to see that you smartly avoided discussing the death of thousands of civilians at hands of ONLF because you wanted to focus on accusing the ethiopian government and thus relating it to Bush's war on terrorism since ethiopia is american ally.

in the eyes of political analysts, this article is probably one of the worst standard of article newsweek has published in many years

When the hyena rules goats have no rights.
The Meles Zenawi government can talk the talk, can denied the facts and can rule by the gun, when it???s oblivious about the fact that this world is like a shadow of a tree that is rotating around its roots. When he is forgetful of he was in Mogadishu few years back as a refuge himself and supported, sheltered, schooled and helped by Somali tax payers. When his minority clan is building sky scribers and majority Oroma and rest are forced to obey by the gun.
Anyway Kumsaa point of view is neglectable in many ways but to mention one of them is that ONLF does not have the capability to go and kill in Tigres region thus whatever they kill are member of the army alone whereas the army is killing indiscriminately among all. Moreover, I glanced about the AU news headlines today and to my amusment sow the AU delegates arriving in Mogadishu Airport welcomed by Tigres militia General known as Gebra.
So, all in all the unpredictable tree shadow of Africa is currently possessed by the Meles the current hyena of the horn of Africa and it is matter of time before he too is hunted down by another hyena.

    Dear Newsweek Author,

Thank you very much for reporting the plight of the Somalis under TPLF occupation. This is a sign of mature and impartial journalism and you should keep up the good work. However, as in many parts of Africa, there are a number of ethnic groups in Ethiopia. One of the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia is Oromo estimated to be about 40 million out of 81. The Oromo people have been subjected to appalling atrocity by the TPLF from June 1991, when TPLF hijacked power in Ethiopia.

Credible reports from international and national human rights groups have documented the ongoing systematic human rights violation of Oromo by TPLF. Many thousands of Oromo were killed or disappeared without trace. In 1992/93 alone, more than 50,000 Oromo were imprisoned by the government security forces and the abuse has increased considerably recently. Rape, torture and executions are commonly employed by the government. The government has also committed a number cross- border operation and killed many prominent Oromo in Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya. Thus Oromo are not safe in Ethiopia or in neighbouring countries.

Oromo ancestral lands were confiscated from peasants and given to members of the ruling party who are exclusively from the Tigre tribe. Thousands of Oromo peasants were forcibly relocated to the most inhospitable areas infested by communicable diseases with no infrastructure. Oromo students are repeatedly expelled from schools and universities just for being Oromo. Oromo graduates have been denied employment opportunity. Even the ecology and environment in which Oromo lives is affected by the government which intentionally burns Oromian forests on the ground that it harbours Oromo freedom fighters. There are countless other forms of human rights violation of Oromo by the current TPLF government.

I hope you do immense service to humanity by reporting the crime of one of the most cunning tyrannical regimes in Africa, which commits untold atrocities against one of the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, if not in Africa.

It is typical of a western media.Even for those as big as Newsweek, always one sided, always playing a voice for the suffering, so hypocritical. But where is the other story. There is always another side for a strory. What about hundreds of peaceful victims of the Terrorist-ONLF?It does not occure to you that Terrorists can target other nations like Ethiopia. You call self a journalist. It is a shame.

Dear Newsweek you have shown us the dirty political game of Meles Zenawi government. Please,Please do the same thing in all Ethiopian prisons where 99%of the prisoners are ethnic OROMOS accused of supporting OLF.Thank you for telling the world the reality on the ground!!!

Another White racist Newsweek report on Africa where facts and standards are optional. If this story, 90% hearsay, was about a Western country, Newsweek would not publish for fear of legal action. Seventy-Four Chinese and Ethiopian civilians oil workers were massacred asleep in their beds by the ONLF, a terrorist group openly funded by Eritrea and Islamic militants, yet Newsweek did not bother to dwell on those victims or the countless villagers daily harassed and victimized by ONLF for food, shelter and support...Why spoil the story with real facts?

I LOVE this article!!! it is funny how the author admitted there is NO way to verify the tales given by ethnic ogadenis who support the ONLF, as ONLF itself stands for ogadeni. Still, the author tells the article of the same tale (which it admitted of lacking verificatin) aS IF IT IS a Flawlessly TRUE story., hahahahaha!!

    .
    well, we know it sells.

    by the way, dear author,
you said somalis living in america finance the violent rebels too ... so are we going to read any future article about our america allowing terror financers in its own backyard??

    probably not.

America can't be labeled a state sponsor of terrorism because it is america, the unquestionable bully of the world.

Wow! Finally American media woke up and started seeing the true color of the Ethiopian government lead by a "Tigray-dominated" dictators. What they are doing in that region is nothing but pure ???Ethnic cleansing??? and this is a good case for the International Criminal Court.

Bravo Newsweek for breaking the silence on this matter. A word of caution, this regime will start accusing you of helping terrorist organization as they did to the Red Cross and many others who tried to shed light to this issue.

The big question is would the American government now start seeing the true color of this tyrannical regime and start distancing them self from them. This dictator will be recorded in the darkest pages of the history of the Horn Africa.

It is no secret to the larger world what the Ethiopian regime have been doing in Ogadenia and the Somali capital, Mogadishu last year.

If the west in general and America in particular are genuine about human rights then they should act according and come to the aid of this poor nomads that are being victimized by they own government. People like Ms Zahid deserve to be protected against this tyranny.

Dear News week: Shame on you for this very biased reporting. For a reader with out much knowledge of Ethiopia and the horn, this article reads like a typical news reporting. However; it is a public secret that the truth is much different than what your reporter has written here. While what has and still happens in the Ogaden is deplorable and ugly, the Ethiopian people are fighting a war that has many instigators and hidden supporters to say the list. May be you should do a bit of research on the writer (Jason McLure) and his motives. An example is that the writer referred to the Ethiopian government as "Tigray-dominated", Ethiopians know that this way of reference only come from Ethiopian enemies. The consequences of war are indeed ugly and no civilian should be subjected them. What is more despicable is of the likes of this writer who try to benefit from it financially and politically. This is not what I expected from a reputable news reporter like News Week.

.Conti......According to an article I just read on Addis Voice, Meles Zenawi has been destroying villages and killing innocent civilians in the Ogaden as well. However, the West has turned a blind eye. Meles is free to terrorize the entire region.....
